What is it with groups and multiple games in championship competitions - we have too many games, particularly with the plethora of competitions (county, divisional/district etc). Something has to give. I think we should go with 12 teams senior teams for the club championship, but in 4 groups of 3. That way, the group stage will take 3 weekends where every team will have a "free" weekend. Now clubs might only get 2 games, but they are guaranteed another 2 games in the county championshp. For the county championship, round 2 would be a losers round, so every team would have a minimum of 2 matches (to help divisional teams). You could include a 9th division by giving the club champions a bye to round 3 if so desired - last 16 would be club champions, 10 round 1 winners and 5 winners from round 2 (losers round).

Divisions should have a max number of intermediate teams...three or four, maybe? Likewise, should Divisions have a minimum of one intermediate team? While this is good in theory, it would be unworkable in reality. For example if St Mary’s got relegated to junior there would be no intermediate club in South Kerry. You would have to add in a club from another division which would end up making things lopsided. One thing I think that should be considered about the makeup of divisional teams is that a successful schools team can lead to a successful divisional team. The South Kerry team of the 2000’s was backbones by colaiste na Sceilge corn ui mhuiri teams of the early 2000’s and the 2015 co. Championship winning team had a lot of the 2009 Hogan Cup winning team. Similarly East Kerry seem to have a lot of the Sem team that won all-Ireland’s in 2016 & 2017.

I saw a headline today where gate receipts for Kerry SFC fell by E200,000. That is a monumental drop in income . I am not sure how that can be redressed but redressed it must.

Something has to give. I know I am probably old school but championship football is knock out football in my book - I can just about get to grips with a second chance saloon but the recent fixation with group phases in our championship competitions does my head in. Simplify the structure of competitions and take the pressure off our amateur players and more may just stick at it. Games week in and week out will kill the game as lads have no life particularly with the level of commitment being demanded at club level these days. There is a fair argument for knockout in the County Championship. Senior clubs have already had group games. The tricky part is divisional clubs. Should they get a second chance or is it a trade off that they go straight into knockout as they don't have relegation to contend with. The divisional clubs in Cork are in straight knockout. Paudie Clifford was suggesting that in Kerry.

But the club championship probably up? Was there an overall gate receipts tally v 22? Don't forget also, winning Sam brings people out more easily too

Did not get to read the full article. I take your point regarding the club championship and losing the All-Ireland but it is still a staggering deficit.

Overall drop of €160k. The SFC dropped by €210k.

I had a Clubber subscription this year and got great value out of it as I'm based up country and wouldn't be in a position to attend in person. Does anyone know what percentage Co Board gets back from it. I hadn't realised that I could have had free access to Clubber on my "dodgy box" but people more clued in than me could have been using it so receipts could be a lot lower than expected.

Was talking to an older lady 2/3 weeks back who has cut back massively on going to games back of Clubber due to age. She would have had a club/county season pass previously. You wonder if Kerry GAA should start doing a combined clubber season pass with the season ticket pass?

Kerry GAA secretary Peter Twiss: “2023 highlighted the full effects of the new ‘split season’ both at inter-county as well as club level. While in general a welcome development, it did throw pressure on club activity here in Kerry. The unique football championship system in Kerry, where some players play in three championships namely Club (Senior, Intermediate or Junior), County Senior Championship and Divisional Championship has come under some strain.”
The County Board have some decisions to make for all three championships to fit in the split season. The club championships need their 6 weeks for 3 groups games, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The County Championship will probably have go straight knockout. If the GAA Congress give an exemption for divisional clubs from the 16 team limit, 8 divisional clubs should play a qualifying round to join 12 senior clubs in straight knockout from 16 to final. 5 weeks for the County Championship. The Divisional Championships then will have 4 weeks. The three championships namely Club (Senior, Intermediate or Junior), County Senior Championship and Divisional Championship can all be completed in 15 weeks in total from mid August to mid September.

2023 Kerry GAA Senior Football District Champions:
6 district champions. The county board might be keen to have 6 divisional clubs.

Reports that the county championship will remain with the same format for the coming year. I understand the impracticality of changing it all in one off season but I look forward to the county board trying to hype up a championship that honestly I don’t any district (besides EK) will make much of an effort for given EK strength and any club will be too concerned about with their focus being on the club championship. So much for the ‘premier competition’

So much for the ‘premier competition’ Looking at the potential team St Brendan’s could have then they’d be stupid not to put in a big effort if you ask me. They could most certainly challenge EK if they organised themselves well. My understanding is that Kerry and Cork are waiting to hear the result of their petition to the powers that be on using Divisions in Senior championship so there might be adjustments this season yet. I would have thought the format of the competition was entirely within County board remit though? As in to not have groups but 1 back door round instead which I think most people would concur is fine.

KERRY GAA clubs will Thursday be presented with fresh county championship structures that would see the number of Kerry SFC clubs increased to ten and the number of divisional sides reduced to six.
The format for the senior championship has been a hot potato in the Kingdom for some time, with clubs railing against the cut-throat nature of the current format with only eight senior clubs. The future of the district sides in the championship has also been under the microscope, leading to a special review committee, headed by All-Ireland winning captain, Dara Ó Cinnéide.
Some criticism of the championship has been “a bit simplistic and self-serving” according to Kerry CEO Peter Twiss, but if delegates to a Board meeting Thursday back the recommendations of the review group, it will lead to important changes going forward - and most likely some kickback from junior clubs who form most of the divisional sides. While the view is that the club championship is working well, the review group wants a 16-team county championship of 10 senior clubs and six district teams from 2026 onwards. Preliminary round(s) will be required to cut the current district teams down to six. There will also need to be adjustments made over the next three campaigns to accommodate this format.
So this year, there would be no relegation from senior, intermediate or Premier JFC with championship winners promoted from Intermediate, Premier Junior and Junior as in previous years. From 2025, the proposal is:
Kerry SFC: Nine senior clubs and six district teams. Prelim Rd 1: 8 district teams play off, four winners go into Rd 1; Prelim Rd 2: the four losers of Prelim Rd 1 play off with the two winners going into Rd 1, and the two losers out.
Rd 1 would then look like: 15 teams, 9 clubs and 6 district teams (7 v 7) open draw and one bye (CCC to decide how this is done). Knockout thereafter.
Senior Club Championship 2025: Nine teams: Three groups of 3. Two finalists from 2024 are kept apart. Two teams qualify from each group. Two quarter finals consisting of 3 runners-up and one winner which will be drawn. Two teams from the same group cannot play each other in a quarter final. NO RELEGATION Rd 1: Round robin Rd 1 Rd 2: Round robin Rd 2 Rd 3: Round robin Rd 3 Rd 4: 2 Quarter finals Rd 5: 2 Semi-finals.
2026 Kerry SFC: Ten senior clubs and 6 district teams.
Prelim Rd 1: Eight district teams play off, four winners go into Rd 1; Prelim Rd 2: Four losers of Prelim Rd 1 play off. The two winners go into Rd 1, 2 losers are out.
Rd 1: 10 clubs and 6 district teams (8 v 8) open draw. Knockout thereafter.
Senior Club Championship 2026: Ten teams. Two groups of 3, one group of 4. Finalists from previous year are kept apart. They will be drawn into group 1, group 2 or group 3 first. The bottom team from each group will play off for relegation. Third from Group 1 will play third from group 2. The loser will play the fourth team from Group 3 in the relegation final. (The 3rd team from group 3 will not play in the relegation play off).

Seems a sensible enough decision has been reached. Divisional sides will get at least two games. Senior clubs have already has a round robin so go straight into knockout.
