I've driven to Portlaoise for games before but would prefer to do the train for this one. Is the walk from the railway station to the ground doable?

Kerry v Louth now fixed for the Sunday when the GAA.ie website has had Saturday shown for the past few weeks. Supporters are really an unwelcome addition as far as the GAA are concerned. No respect ….
I don’t understand how times/dates/venues couldn’t have been fixed weeks ago once the composition of the groups was known.

But sure who doesn't want to shell out €200 for a BnB (sans a B) 5km outside Cork city on a Saturday night

Neutral venue in all but name, serious travel difference. I actually expected Semple Stadium.
What is parking like in Portlaoise?

There's a multi story car park in a shopping centre beside the ground. Parking was also permitted on the road but I'd imagine they will be stricter with this game.

Was there for the U20s aswell last year and they let me park in the field you can access at the side of the main stand though I'd imagine you'd need to get there early to get a spot there.

Is it our first senior championship game in Portlaoise since 2002 qualifiers? We played 2 games there in 2002 if my unreliable memory serves me correctly.

I see Mayo are heading back to Limerick for their neutral game against Cork - have the complaints started yet!!!
With two games in each time slot it will be interesting to see what games are televised and whether or not it will on GAAGO or one of the RTE stations.

If I was to pick I would think Mayo v Cork has more of a heavy weight ring to it and it really should be the closer of the 2 games, not saying I expect Kerry to hammer Louth either. I think Cork will be able to compete well with Mayo. Kerry & Louth probably has more riding on it in terms of being closer to a knockout game than the other but I would expect GAAGO to have 1 game and RTE the other. Same with the 4pm games as well as the Saturday games. I can see Mayo v Cork being the free to air if there is one.

I don't know about the rest of you but this stuff of announcing days/times/venues 10-12 days out is really impacting on the ability of the Kerry supporters I'd usually be travelling with being able to go to games.
Usually there would be a good group of us going to every match but for the Cork game and now Louth there's practically no one out of my lot able to go between work and other pre-booked commitments.
Madness by the GAA to not have the details of all these group fixtures announced in one go once provincial finals are done.

Very hard to organise things on such short notice. Was at the 2 matches in 2002 when we hammed fermanagh and wicklow if memory serves me right. I think the Wicklow game might have been Noel Kennellys last senior championship game for Kerry & John Sheehans first

All my posts are negative so I apologise in advance.
The GAA have made a shambles of this championship from a fans perspective.
No notice, games at silly times, Pointless games with no jeopardy.
8k at the Dublin game ? 14.5k at our game ?
The GAA need a serious reset.

No notice, games at silly times, Pointless games with no jeopardy. 8k at the Dublin game ? 14.5k at our game ? The GAA need a serious reset. I understand your points Royal and by and large agree with them but in defense of the GAA...the GAA is us through our clubs and counties voting for the change we have got. We didn't want dead-rubbers so we removed jeopardy by default (though the opposite was our intention but without thinking it through). We wanted to retain the provincial championships and accommodating that has led to the group make-up we now have. I think we all on-here like the national league...but is that partly because jeopardy for ourselves is fairly low and we can just go and enjoy the game, more or less come what may? A huge part of the attraction of the original championship format was the 'do-or-die' everyday you went out. That championship format is unsustainable today I agree but is there a combination of an extended national league....with maybe the top 4 teams playing round robin games to decide champions and the bottom four teams playing round robin games to decide who gets relegated. And revert to the championship with back door format. The league and championship to overlap somewhat? I don't know to be honest if that will work either....trial and error is where we are at and its probably unfair to judge current system on its first year alone. There was a proposal to create 4 conference type set-ups of 8 teams each. That too would have a lot of one-sided games. If the current (2023) format is to be pursued further next year, maybe the 'tweak' that may have most impact is to reduce progression to 2 teams from each group. Jeopardy returns but so do dead rubbers in final rounds. For championship, we need jeopardy and in my opinion, a few dead rubbers is a small enough price to pay. The GAA (us again) could try voting to ensure supporters are not treated as of little concern in the overall scheme and have a calendar and dates/ venues decided once the draw is made and maybe try a bit of that old marketing thing that seems to be popular with other sports.

All fair and valid points Joxer, Until such a time as the GAA grasp the nettle of the provincial championships then no restructuring will really work. The GAA were obsessed with avoiding dead rubber games but in doing so they took the jeopardy out of the majority of the games. We will obviously have a better picture once this is finished in July but the jury is very much out for me.

I'd agree Kerryboyo but not sure what change that might be. It would need to be someone who is in training all year with the squad as drafting in someone now, straight into the team, is not viable for many reasons. I suggested before the Cork match that Barry Dan could come into midfield and Diarmuid move to right half forward. I still think that has merit. I don't know if you listened to the Examiner podcast this week but an interesting stat that was talked about from the Ky v Mo game was that from the kick-outs which Mayo went short for, they scored 0-03. From those that they went long on, they scored 1-06.
I don't to be fair think that the 1-06 is down solely to our midfield pairing. In my recollection, we repeatedly lost out in the breaking ball area...on occasion breaking ball ourselves to unmarked Mayo players. I have no stats on this but just my memory. The 'Paul Galvin' role is obviously then an area we are very weak on....that should be an easier (not easy but maybe easier) fix that finding a high fielding midfielder at this stage. I don't know if Diarmuid and Adrian can play that role? Maybe someone else to come in when they tire? Or start with either Dara or Stephen in the role? I do think Adrian going off at HT last Saturday was a factor in our much weaker second half performance.
We had a lot more forward movement in the first half last Saturday...Gavin White & even Tadhg Morley finding themselves in close quarters to the Cork goalkeeper on occasion. Also we regularly had at least 1 and sometimes 3 players available and unmarked for kickouts on the 'far side' of Midfield. Maybe something we are working on for later but later might be never if we don't get ourselves sorted for Louth.

When the qualifiers had 3 or 4 rounds, teams didn’t know where they would be week on week. I particularly remember us playing in Leitrim a few years back. The road network to Carrick on Shannon isn’t exactly motorway. We got through that, then by the time the details for the next round was confirmed, we were off to Salthill at about 3/4 days notice. Galway in the height of the tourist season, impossible to get accommodation, and if you did, it was sky high prices. Galway is a ten hour round trip. A lot of people (myself included) just couldn’t stretch to it. It really does annoy me when fans in particular are messed around like this. There is a certain sense of adventure not knowing who we are up against next, and where the draw will take us, but giving fans a few days notice week on week is very disrespectful.

I suppose its been a while since Kerry had to go through the qualifiers like that Ard Mhacha so you'd forget about the way that was done too. But I think in the post-Covid era with the crisis in accommodation of any sort and the cost of living craziness all these things are magnified so much more in 2023. It's simply not possible to get a weekend night in hotel in this country for anything under €150 no matter where you are come the summer. Add in transport and the ballooning price of a bit of grub or a few drinks and is it any wonder people are choosing to watch it at home with a few cans and then head off to the beach or something for themselves. Last Saturday for myself it was either pay €190 for a BnB in Cork or go up and down on train from where I'm based so I did the latter. Ticket €25, return train €70, lunch in Cork, burger after the match as was getting the train home and maybe 5 pints over course of the day (a cider in PUC was €7 for example). Didn't have much change left from €200 for the day out! How whole families go to away games at the present time I've just no clue. Add in the extra amount of games its no wonder now supporters from even the best followed counties (like Mayo) have to pick and choose their games. I'd say most are selecting one group game and hoping to still have the team in the Q-final or maybe gambling on a semi-final day out instead. What's the solution? Well ticket prices could be lowered, could the GAA not lean on the likes of Irish Rail to offer special match day tickets for services like in the good old days? Could food and refreshments at GAA owned grounds be subsidised a little so you're not paying €8 for a burger with a bit of ketchup in Croke Park or €7+ for a pint???

In the same boat lad, Already looking towards the preliminary QF likely in Killarney. It's a return trip same day if I make it. 60 quid on the train, I think I'll get bus from Drogheda and luas from Connolly. Atleast I might get a few pints in Jimmy Briens before the long journey home..

Call me an optimist but, I think Kerry might have timed their run in terms of peaking at the right time this year.
Looking at the draw for the provinces etc early in the year Jack and Co would have expected Galway & Mayo, Dubs and another and Derry / Tyrone and Armagh to make the provincial finals. And cork to make the Munster final.
If it worked out that way we wouldn't be playing one of the big guns like Mayo / Galway or Tyrone etc until our final group game and at a neutral venue. The third and fourth seeds in our group would have come from lower down the league table, Maybe a Roscommon or Donegal or Kildare etc.
Meaning we would have had an easier home game to kick off with and our away match would be against a fourth seed like Westmeath etc.
We looked good in the Munster final so I wonder was the plan from the terms of the start of the year to peak at Munster final time and again at the final qualifier group game. Take the week off and go again.
So I think we might actually hit the ground running next week and put the game to bed early so we can run the bench to rest players to be fresh for the preliminary game in Killarney

Yeah I'm not buying it either unfortunately.
We've been poor in the McGrath cup, League and all ireland so far.
Hard to see them flicking a switch now.
I'd never be happier to be wrong but they look a tired team in my eyes.
