After seeing Kerrys disaster vs Mayo today, it's clear to see where Kerrys achilles heel is. Middle sector and physicality. I can't see us getting a brand new midfield pairing this season but we can do more to bring that physicality to our game. For me Adrian and SOB need to start as they bring that workrate and tackling around the middle sector that Kerry lacked vs Mayo.
This game against Cork has now become a lot tastier than it first seemed, Kerry need a big reaction against our neighbours and there will be a lot more attention on this game compared to what it would have been had Kerry won. I don't doubt Kerrys ability to beat Cork but what I will be most interested in will be the changes the management will make, both tactically and and in personnel upon reflection of the performance in Killarney.

Apart from the game, it is a disgrace that the date and time of this fixture still haven't been announced - makes a total mockery of supporters and only serves to further undermine this new format.

Every team who made a provincial final was entitled to a 2 week break before the round robin.

Just my few points from the Mayo match:
1. Wins gloss over weaknesses and losses too might exaggerate certain problems. It’s worrying but this exact team won an all Ireland less than a year ago. The form of Seán O’Sé is a big concern. He’ll remain on the team based on how good we know he can be but how long can we afford to persist with that as a strategy.
2. In my opinion Graham can only play in the full back line in the current structure. He doesn’t have the penetration or distribution skills required for wing back. This problem is magnified when Jack Barry is playing also who has the same problem. Morley likewise. So including half backs and midfield you are left with 2 reliable ball carriers out of defence out of 5 in HB line and midfield and both Diarmuid and Gavin had the game pass them by yesterday.
3. Teams have figured out Morley dropping off and are now playing a man he needs to mark on him. Before he seemed to nominally take the other teams work horse and let him off out the pitch while Tadhg could protect the D. You can’t do that when your man is a scoring threat and you need to push out on him. That’s why you need options and experience and men around you which can sub in in marking your man or else drop and protect the D if you are directly man marking.
4. Midfield being passive is a problem. That said I still have huge faith in Diarmuid, he’s a young player still and sometimes it takes a while to mature into a midfield role of all positions.
5. I think we need to ignore picking who our best 6 forwards are and be more pragmatic. Last year we picked a wing forward as an auxillary midfielder and only ever played two out and out forwards who don’t offer much without the ball. In other words, do not have 3 of DC, PG, TB (definitely has improved defensively), KOS, Donal Down on the same team.
6. We played like an inexperienced team yesterday who were very naive and that is what is most disappointing. We clawed it back to 1 point near half time I think and yet went in 5 down. How had we nobody to break momentum. Keep possession when they get two in a row to slow it down, go down injured etc etc. These are basic tactics even clubs team employ.
This would be my team vs Cork on the basis of the above opinions.
Ryan Graham, Jason, Tom Paul, Tadhg, Gavin Mike Breen, Diarmuid Stephen O Brien, Paudie, Adrian/Ronan Buckley Seán O Se, DC, Geaney
Forwards play as a 2-2-2 with SOB and probably Adrian doing the dirty work around the middle. Seanie and Paudie in a second line-a little more creative and helping the scoreboard but also capable of work with DC and I had to pick Geaney on the basis of yesterday good performance inside.
Ball carriers around the middle then are-White, Diarmuid, Mike Breen, Paul, SOB. Paul is also a great distributor.
If Morley is forced to mark his man, Paul would have the in game intelligence to be able to drop off. Mike Breen could do the same. Alternatively, Morley could pass his man off to Mike as a natural half back.
Mike is a great midfielder at club level but might be lacking a couple of inches at intercounty so you’d have to pick his match up but as they say in boxing, styles make fights. Adrian/Ronan Buckley being on the pitch would add aerial ability also.
Also just to say I disagree with other posters saying DM isn’t up to it. He had a few very poor turnovers yesterday but he also did several good things. He’s a victim at the moment of our lack of height in the middle 8. It’s looking more like the case that against certain teams you can only play him or Paudie due to what you lose in stature when we don’t have dominant midfielders.

A team that might be worth trying could be the following: 1) Shane Ryan 2) Brian Begley 3) Jason Foley 4) Tom O'Sullivan 5) Mike Breen 6) Tadgh Morley 7) Gavin White 8) Diarmuid O'Connor 9) Barry O'Sullivan/Jack Barry 10) Stephen O'Brien 11) Paudie Clifford 12) Adrian Spillane 13) David Clifford 14) Seán O'Shea 15) Paul Geaney
I'm aware a lot of this is experimental but hear me out: Reason for changes is to bring more physicality into the team and workrate around the middle 8, Seanie was caught badly in my eyes yesterday for pace. We know he can score on his day so he might be better closer to goal. Having Adrian & SOB is crucial for me as they track back and tackle woth ferocious intensity. I'd like to see Barry Dan given a run at midfield vs Cork and see what he can bring to the table he would be my choice over Jack Barry..I would bring in Mike Breen as we need size under the breaking ball which we were also found out for yesterday. It was then a choice between Brian & Graham for number 2 but I think Brian offers that bit extra when we need to go short from the kickouts and is also a very capable man marker.
I'm aware this might not be our 100% best team at the moment but I would still hope this side would have far too much for Cork and we'd get to see where other fellas are at. I really like Ruairi Murphy and was close to giving him a spot but I think Paul Geaney did enough vs Mayo to retain his place vs Cork.

A few change’s definitely needed. Jack Barry has to go. Dara Moynihan just not physically up to it . Tony Brosnan has had enough chances too. Ryan Graham Foley Sullivan O Beaglaoich Morley White Spillane Barry Dan O Brien Paudie O Connor David Seanie Geaney

A few people suggesting moving SOS to corner forward with David Clifford and Paul Geaney. Surely you're going to overcrowd the space in there and detract from Clifford and Geaney.
How is David Moran playing, would it be worth trying to get him back for a couple of months?

Can anyone confirm when the time will be fixed for cork Kerry game? I'd be imagining that it will be fixed by the CCCC tomorrow afternoon. I would nearly bet that it will be on the Saturday evening as the Cork marathon will be on the Sunday.

Personally I don't see how moving SOS to full forward is going to help. As others have said he's obviously gone heavy on the weights and just isn't as mobile as he was. Imo he'd be totally lost in the full forward line. At the moment it's hard to say where to play him. At a push I'd say midfield but again I don't know if he's mobile enough to play there.

I remember Paul Galvin talked about cutting back on his weight training as it had impacted his football.. Maybe Seanie will realise that too as he was largely anonymous yesterday. But ultimately too many of the lads are just out of form.

I have seen David play a few times this year & he would be well off of championship pace - think he knew his time had come last year & it was time to go.

Lads, lots asking for SOB inclusion , if performing in training yes, but we have not seen him, where he is at is questionable, def needs more game time. Seanie struggling, but his free taking is critical, seen what happened when he was missing.
Ryan Graham Foley Sullivan O Beaglaoich Morley White Jack B Barry Dan A Spillane Paudie O Connor David Seanie Geaney

Casey is getting far to much criticism.
It reminded me of how Shane Enight got hung out to dry on Andy Moran in 17.
You cannot have acres of space infront of a FF line and expect the FB line to hold their own.
Our problem is not the FB line it's the 3 lines infront of it.
OBeaghlaoich, Breen, Barry Dan, Spillane all need to come into that team.
The Seanie issue is similar to Dec Sulivan in 06 and maybe a rest is not the worst thing that or he changes position.

Sean o Shea I would drop as apart from his free's which have not improved neither he is actually a passenger for too long in games. Hopefully K Spillane comes in as he has composure and will score in vital moments. I would like to see Brosnan Moynihan & Burns dropped from the panel and fresh blood brought in, they surely cannot be worse than those 3. Jack Barry dropped as well. Too many so-called experienced players not standing up when it counts and I'm afraid will never do at this stage.

Casey will be a good player for us I have no doubt, faced an onslaught on saturday while on a bigger & taller experienced player. The 3 lines are where we are & have been our problem down through the years. We need more pace & steel. Dec o Sullivan was a far better player than S o Shea and only had a loss of form for a few games, O'Shea has gone missing in too many big games since 2019. He hasn't the mobility, pace, creativity & fight that Dec o Sullivan had, I would drop him for the Cork game and see how he responds to that.

If he’s going well he’s just what we need at wing forward but there’s no guarantee that’s the case at his age and only coming back from injury. Many including yourself calling for Diarmuid O’Connor to go to wing forward. He has never played well at wing forward for Kerry. If he’s not good enough to start midfield then he’s not good enough to start full stop.

Would like to see D Clifford out in the half-forward line as he is being swallowed up in the corner, has the creativity and can kick from distance. D O Connor hasn't worked out at wing-forward before. New faces & thinking outside the box now for the management otherwise we will go out in the quarter final. Jack has yet to win back to back AI's and for this team to be respected.

Declan was one of kerrys greatest ever players but Seanie is as pivotal to Kerrys success now. He needs to find form and he won't do that on the bench. Possible a switch into full forward something like that. We need to do something imaginative.. Even moving White or Seanie into midfield.. something different.
