So unfair to make Kerry play in front of such a big Monaghan following. A crowd like that makes a difference to young lads....and sways a ref in the tight calls. I get your point and kind of agree but that's happened for years and alot of the time in our favour when our senior team were winning and our minor team were playing before hand. True Mick but in previous years a particular minor fixture was predestined to take place before a particular senior game. A Munster/Leinster minor S/F for instance would always be on the bill with the Munster/Leinster seniors. Same way with provincial finals etc and if it worked out for your team support-wise, or not, at least you knew. In recent years though, that hasn't been the case and the boys and the men have been kept apart even where they might have been playing on the same weekend. But then Kerry/Monaghan minors are arbitrarily put with the Monaghan seniors last week. I have to agree with mack21, it was unfair to our lads and tantamount to giving Monaghan home advantage.

It's the linesmen I worry about when they have one set of supporters in their ear. They tend to react to the helpful advice from the terrace, and refs tend to be happier to make big decisions based on the word of a linesman than if they see it themselves.

True Horse but once lessons are learned we l go again next year. That Evan Boyle could be a future star. Watch Boyle since way underage, serious talent and in my opinion the best big ball prospect of the house hold. There was a passage of play in the 1st half where Evan got hit with a fierce belt of a shoulder from a Monaghan player that left him in on the deck, but instead of staying on the ground and waiting for a physio he got up and raced towards a loose ball and crashed through 2 monaghan lads to win a ball he had no right to win. Love to see that will to win in a player.

I didn't see any reason to question the referee's decisions throughout the match in fairness. I think Monaghan were slightly better than us , got the lucky break with the goal and had the strength of composure to hold onto their lead.
Monaghan's speed and decicevness of their decision making was better, and better execution also. This is still a development stage for these lads.

I am biased of course but felt that Monaghan were finding it easier to get frees - the one that stands out was in the 2nd half when a Monaghan player charged into Ben Murphy - for me it was a free to Kerry - for the ref it was a Monaghan free & a yellow for Murphy - overall though, Monaghan slightly better side - we didn’t have a settled forward line all year - the two constants were Paddy Lane & Tomás Kennedy - we must have tried 6/8 players in the other 4 positions.

That incident was categorically a free out (instead of in) as the Monaghan lad jumped into Murphy with feet off the ground.
As well as the goal before half time which proved decisive, bringing the keeper up to kick from the ground in the 2nd half proved almost as disastrous as it went straight to an unmarked opponent from which Monaghan went forward and scored, culminating in a 2 point swing.
It was a game of small margins with 2 Kerry goal chances going abegging in the last 10 also....
No doubt the vocal support from Monaghan was worth a score or two....just like that free aforementioned against Ben Murphy

I left the dust settle before I decided to post this - I feel the Kerry minors were ill prepared and I'm afraid it has to drop to management - a few serious issue - there are 6/7 Stack players on the panel - if Stacks are this strong - they should walk the county championship, the was no plan B - just like Tyrone on Sunday - playing with small forward only prove fruitful against bad teams - when space is of the minimum - big boys and power are required - why did they not put one of 2 of the big men at the edge of the square for some few minutes during the game? very obvious every player was under instruction to get the ball to one player in the inside line and im afraid the CB had him in his pocket from the work go - were they not able to change tact mid stream? This year minors, last years U20's - amazingly some of the same coaching staff and the same failing - who in the set up is tasking with showing these guys their failure's? This has been a trend in the last few year - trying to make one player a hero - you need more that one to win .. so management need to take a serious look at themselves and the County board need to have a few wise old heads to help these guys along..

I would agree with you on a lot of that. Both the minor and U20 semi final we lost this year had some shared characteristics. We didn't look to have any plan B and mgmt made no changes in either case that were aimed at getting us out of a rut and over the line. To be fair, U17 is too young anyway and there is going to be a certain amount of mistakes, naivety, nervousness no matter what work you do I think. It was a poor decision to lower the age to 17 for Minor and the quality of games and the prestige of the whole competition has suffered. At U20 however I think apart from the very good first half against Cork, we did not impress. And the total failure to deal with a basic enough kickout plan by Sligo in the semi final was far from good enough at this level.

Some fine players in that minor team selling themselves short. It's not getting out of first gear that annoys me. Just about players being young - the oppositional the same age making the same mistakes so we should still win.

I must also say I agree with a lot of this The final panel left a lot of people scratching their heads due to a few glaring omissions. I must say, regarding the getting to the ball to a certain forward, I also agree. He is a fine player. I was in the Terrace for the game in ASP against Cork so had a good view/ear of the management and the tactic to give the ball to that 1 player was very very evident. Not to mention the pressure this puts on the player also I left the dust settle before I decided to post this - I feel the Kerry minors were ill prepared and I'm afraid it has to drop to management - a few serious issue - there are 6/7 Stack players on the panel - if Stacks are this strong - they should walk the county championship, the was no plan B - just like Tyrone on Sunday - playing with small forward only prove fruitful against bad teams - when space is of the minimum - big boys and power are required - why did they not put one of 2 of the big men at the edge of the square for some few minutes during the game? very obvious every player was under instruction to get the ball to one player in the inside line and im afraid the CB had him in his pocket from the work go - were they not able to change tact mid stream? They’ll be a good team there next year . Paddy Lane had a good year Ben Murphy also was solid. I think the main thing every year is to try and move a few on the u20 level and then hopefully onto senior .

Comprehensive win for the Derry minors today as expected. Our lack of pace in midfield and lack of penetration and quality up front would have been badly exposed today so no regrets seeing the final result.Still think the 17 age is too young but as this de coupling from adult competition suits the Gaa fixtures calendar can’t see it changing anytime soon which is a shame

17 age way too young, boys at this age are not developed physically or mentally enough. The extra year makes a massive difference

17 age way too young, boys at this age are not developed physically or mentally enough. The extra year makes a massive difference A proposal was brought up at congress to take it back to U18 but was rejected. It's U17 again next year. In one sense though we need to get away from comparing u17 minor to U18 minor and accept U17 minor for what it is. Young lads doing their best at this stage in their development.

Yes, it would seem that for all the talk, there is little appetite for change among those in power. With most schools having at least the option of Transition Year, many young men are 19 or approaching that when they do their Leaving and play on school team.
So minor grade bears little relevance to what it was previously.

Agreed and I think the competition now being for 15, 16 & 17 does not really give you a major health check on the future, An average 15/16 year old could be a great 17/18 year old,

North kerry hammered a good South Kerry team. East Kerry lucky to get over Stacks... who missed all around them. West and Mid kerry drew... North look formidable.

North kerry hammered a good South Kerry team. East Kerry lucky to get over Stacks... who missed all around them. West and Mid kerry drew... North look formidable. "North Look formidable" ah yes and no, this was their first outing really, with only one challenge played against a Limerick U16 selection, so a bit disjointed, the team selection was head scratching, three of the defensive six are not defenders, which would be a worry. The team to me looked more an accommodation exercise than picking the best players available in their best positions. The scoreline does reflect the different class, but, and no offense intended, your quote "good South Kerry Team" couldn't be further from the truth, they looked like an U16 team that were gathered the evening of a game. Only Fintan Sullivan from Renard was of the standard required. North won't be tested either against Laune Rangers, so could be cold and undercooked, and there for the taking. I assume with a homecoming fixed penciled in for Monday, that the next round of games will be deferred.

I was basing my analysis of South kerry on seeing one of their challenge matches early on in the Summer. They also turned over a well organised Laune Rangers outfit in the first round. I take your point on last night's result though. Either North are excellent, South not as good as we thought or a combination of both. Should make an interesting last round of games. West and Mid are both still alive after last night's draw. I think the next round is Tuesday August 1st?

Brendans board are always fairly competitive to be fair. They should be strong enough. Are all Tralee clubs except Stacks in with them? Throw in St. Pats, Ardfert, Churchill? They have a good pick..

Mid kerry beat the East last night? Turn up for the books..Stacks and North kerry won at a canter against West Kerry and Laune Rangers. Looking like a 2 horse race. That'd make an interesting final... North v Stacks. When is the quarter final draw does anyone know?

Mack 21, Tonight, there was three groups, the top teams in each group go into a pot. The first two out get a bye to the semi final.
The remaining team, goes back into the pot with the three second placed teams, those four make up your quarter finalists.
Having watched NK twice, they have not been impressive, team selection is inconsistent and, in my opinion they would benefit from the extra game in a quarter. If they progress direct to the semi, my fear is they may be caught cold.

If st Brendan’s can get more out of there forwards other then the outstanding Thomas Kennedy I can see them being underdogs

Just noticed St. Brendans are gone. How did that happen? Kenmare did very well to pull a result away from home. Will they have any chance against Stacks I wonder?
