Commiserations to Listowel, while I think better team won on the day, two absolutely enormous decisions ultimately decided this game.
Listowel never came out in 2nd half.

This year's final was a lower standard than last year's. We have seen this year how good Fossa were and that Tyrone team were in the game until the sending off and then resorting to thuggery.
Listowel didn't have much fluency up front. Bryan Sweeney was well marked and it was hard to see where the scores were going to come from in the second half. Listowel did dominate the midfield in the air and maybe if a certain Mr. Cox was knocking around north Kerry they'd have been going home with the cup. I felt Arva went to win the game and Listowel were just trying to hang in there.
Credit to the Cavan team. They played a nice brand of football and had good pace throughout the side. They look like the type of team that are on the up and I saw a clip of their captain afterwards and he said that they have a good production line.
The goal at the end is the type of goal thats often given in the modern game with the advantage rule but the better team won and I don't think ET would have been any different.
In broader terms it's good to see Listowel getting some silverware. A big town like them should be producing more players.

regarding the game speed and quality, the cavan team often played up to 14 lads inside their 45 and counter. that had a huge impact on the quality of the game.
several times looked at the pitch and it was frustrating to see these negative tactics in play - GAA needs to change this and need to enforce teams to keep say 4-5 players inside both 45s at the same time.

Listowel were so fluent in the first half, county team mode, I wonder if the vastness of Croke Park drained the tank?
Now I'm no expert and while to play in Croker is amazing, would a not so big pitch be more apt?
Was it a pure coincidence that both teams were wasteful at the finishing off stage - tired below AND above the neck?
Those boys need a rest, well done to all regardless.
Hopefully it will trigger interest in NK, I seen it happen in Letterkenny when Jim McGuinness turned the ship around, a population of 5,000 are silver hungry and they need to stoke envy in the rest of us, we live in hope!
BTW I had the pleasure of bumping into 2 fellow forum members recently, headbangers, like moi of c! As the man says 'there is a pattern here' .... anyway they were most complimentary of of Bally' .. 'is that really you' .... I think we are conditioned to only know one other as virtual friends on here, it is sad, we need to start meeting at games, etc, we lost a most respected member in the distant past and I was saddened that we weren't there for them so if for that reason alone I feel we need to take a look at this.
If it wasn't for other (much personal) factors I'd be glad to take a lead role here, still all it takes is a thread - say we meet in a pub before a game or whatever, ah say Sportsfield Bar an hour before Derry match? Agus 'níl baint agam', well apart from beinh able to recommend the pint. I am sure our host will have no objections whatsoever to the custom of a few (more!!) headbangers around the place - he might even sing a song for us! BTW2 'tis a Mitchels pub so apols if it is against your religion to venture into their territory, yerrah they're alright, plenty of no notice, etc - you can always feast on the pics of our own (and Mayo's) Paddy Prendergast, bitter sweet.... a calming influence or what, a force of nature, I'd say he'd walk off the wall if anyone even dreamed of turning cranky!
BTW3 Anyone introduce us to the bloodlines of the Emmets crew - McVeigh is also Kennelly, Healy also a Purtill .. over to you, lets hear it for Mná Na Paróiste, Speirbhan na Paróiste! I had to remind the Crokes bucks (pun intended?) that Johnny Buckley was also a Keane of the reigning NK champs.

Just back from the game. Hugely disappointing outcome but a great run all the same.
Now, I'm as blinkered as anybody when it comes to football and I haven't seen any of it back on tv yet but... Good and all as Arva were, I can't help feeling that Listowel were massively shafted by Anthony Nolan yesterday. The black-carding of Ger McCarthy at a critical stage and the disallowing of the goal were simply disgraceful decisions. And though Arva dominated the second half, Nolan's interpretation of the tackle seemed to depend on which side was doing it. Seemed like Listowel couldn't buy a free whereas they couldn't put a hand in at all on an Arva man. Which of course makes it very hard to generate any momentum in a game. As I said, it may just be bias on my part but the Listowel crowd became more and more incensed as the game went on and the customary thanks to the officials was met with a frosty reception afterwards, to say the least.
Anyway, for all that, congrats to Arva and commiserations to the Emmets. Just wasn't to be. Fantastic support yesterday, looked like the whole town turned up.

A mistimed shoulder and not a deliberate pull down at all. The goal though wasn’t going to stand anyway as Grimes had over carried. The whistle was well gone by the time he finished it to be fair. As you pointed out, Arva got some awful handy frees. At least one was a blatant dive I thought myself. Nolan is a poor referee in my experience watching him. Referees shouldn’t stand out but I remember some awful performances by him. An u21 semi final a few years ago comes to mind. All that said, the better team won on the day and had they converted even a quarter of the chances in second half they would have won more comfortably. Emmets just couldn’t handle the full press on kickouts by Arva. Emmets looked largely out on their feet in last quarter and very few of them had any effect on the second half. One big positive was the form of Eddie Healy who showed he’s capable of playing at a much higher level. Overall this will serve as good experience for Emmets heading into Intermediate but I don’t think they can blame the ref.

Think the decision to take off Leahy at half time will wreck the heads of listowel for years to come.
A cavan man was beside me at the game and deeply involved in cavan football. At half time he was saying how well Brady was being marked out of the game and how he had no influence on it.
Now it could he pure coincide and Darragh O Se in his prime may not have shackled him in that second half but he scored 3 points and set up countless more and won the game for Arva. Who knows though...who knows.

Terrible that the efforts of a community can be nullified by silly ref decisions.
All the hard work that went into it and all people want is justice and fair play, and which is what the GAA as a community sport is all about.
