I have rarely been so wiped out after attending a match in Dublin. The day seemed to go on forever. I suppose this was due a myriad factors. There was the forecast for torrential rain which necessitated hauling along a lot of rain gear. Thankfully this was not needed on the walk to or back from Croke Park. Then there was the elongated first match- desirable and undesirable drama- which meant our match didn't start until 5pm. On top of that Dublin City Council added to my misery. Coming down Capel Street and shooting across the Liffey is my usual gateway to depart the city. Now, the Corporation have decided Capel Street is for pedestrians and outdoor diners only. I acknowledge of course that dining out is a fundamental right in our tropical climate! Did anybody envisage the chaos this would cause to the flow of traffic. I do not know what happens on weekdays but at about 6.30/7pm yesterday it resulted in a total car snarl up in the area of Pernell St/Bolton Street/North King Street which was my new exit route because of Capel Street being out of bounds. To make a long story short, to get from my usual parking spot to the homeward bound side of Liffey took me about seventy minutes where heretofore that journey would have taken about fifteen minutes. Even writing about it now tires me further. What volume of fumes did I and other motorists emit yesterday, as we circuitously navigated our way across the city, as opposed to previously. But sure what does the man in the street know in comparison to experts and planners.
Last night I commented that Mayo's frailties played a major part in our victory. On reflection that was perhaps a little harsh but only marginally so. This was a poor Mayo side and on the day one rarely felt, when any of their forwards were possession, in the words of George Hamilton, "danger here". Yet, they were in the game at the fifty/five minute mark . It is easy to say with hindsight that we never looked in danger but there were times , when we were so leaden-footed in that opening fifty minutes or so, that we might indeed have lost it. Had Mayo scored a goal, Kevin O'Loughlin should have had one in the opening half, with the majority support it is conceivable that they could have pulled it off. I will put it another way. In the last five minutes or so had it been level or a point difference either way, with the crowd baying for blood, there were only about a thousand of us, it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that Mr. Gough might have got into the festive mood and given a few crucial marginal decisions against us. These things happen in this wicked world of ours.
Thankfully it did not come down to marginal calls and this was the juncture where our resilience and nous rather than Mayo's frailties decided the outcome. Our backs became more watertight , David Moran continued to be a monster at midfield and up front the likes of Paul Geaney, Sean O'Shea and David Clifford, even though flying on one wing all through, demonstrated those seductive skills we know they possess in abundance. Paudie Clifford , though less conspicuous than usual, did useful work in knitting some of those final, incisive attacks. Paudie ,like his brother, commands a lot of attention from the opposition. I have read some of the posts here and one contributor described Paudie as " going missing". What a pejorative comment to make about a man, whatever shortcomings he has and who hasn't those , always runs himself into the ground for the cause of Kerry.
Shane Ryan was very solid apart from one poorly timed jump for possession in the second half as a consequence of which he was hurt. That happened in front of me at the Canal End and while he was momentarily down Mayo regained possession. I thought for one heart stopping second Mayo would score a goal into an empty net but the backs swarmed very quickly and while they got a point, I think, it could have been crueller. Shane also had one or two poor kicks out but most goalies seem do that.
I thought our entire full back line was excellent. Is there a more important line on any team? I scoff when some people say so and so is wasted in the full back line. There have been times when I was unsure about Graham O'Sullivan. Every time I see him lately those doubts are evaporating. With the injuries to Dylan and Dan , his arrival is timely.
Paul Geaney nearly scored one at the near post in the first half. It is very difficult to that unless of course you happen to be the Fossa Freak. Paul did a score a beauty of a point in that half after a sublime pick up. He also neatly wrongfooted his marker along the side line in that half, set up Brian O'Beaghlaigh who unfortunately mishandled. Paul of course sored a few more in the second half.
Speaking of Brian , I thought he did very well but for the last ten minutes or so, he was not too far away from me , he looked out on his feet. It is noteworthy that he went off injured in the Limerick game so presumably his training has been curtailed in the meantime.
I had a bird's eye view of the wonder boy in the right corner in the first half. In the words of Paul Simon he " he kept slip slip sliding away". In one of those sliding incidents he injured his ankle , to compound his calf injury. It was gut wrenching to see this man being little more than a passenger for that half but then, but then, but then ---. That is what you get from a footballing genius. But I repeat myself.
I was disappointed that Tony Brosnan was not brought on sooner. He made an impact when he came on as did Joseph O'Connor. There was one memorable moment when Tony slalomed his way past a few tackles to get the ball out of defence. He has marvellous skill.
Good enough to the beat the Dubs? A man needs to take time to mull over that after such an exhausting day.

Tony Brosnan annoyed me when holding onto the ball at the end. 8 points up. Why get a yellow and piss off the ref. He might not getva marginal call the next day if its Gough again.

I thought Killian was robbed by Hawkeye tbh. But on that, if Hawkeye monitors all shots and not just the ones it's asked to rule on, then why have umpires at all? I see Brian Gavin in the Examiner a bit critical of Gough's performance. www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/columnists/arid-40904552.htmlLooked slightly unfit to me, I have to say, like he was carrying a few pounds. Not like him to be fair. Now I’m beginning to doubt Hawkeye. Killian’s point did look good and I replayed it a number of times. Hawkeye never shows the proper projectory of the ball, it’s always in a dead straight line. At least 90% of the time “NIl” is directly over the upright, probably to make the umpires look good. What are the thoughts of people at the game regarding Killian’s “point”? What you see is a kind of graphical representation, maybe distances are proportionate, e.g. shaving the post or say a foot in - others will know more as to why we don't see something that is closer to reality, all techie stuff - I must say I'd have an eye for these things and I was 100% with Hawkie yesterday, or was he 100% with mise? We need to factor in that the previous game hampered both teams so I'd rate us an 8 as opposed to a 7 for the shift - there was times when we were oozing and such pure class will take beating; the team that beats us, etc. My hope is that once we break the glass ceiling the team will have found their Mojo for a few years to come - let's leave it at that. I was talking to a Dgaller this morning who tells me that the 'new' criteria with management tenure is not so much if failure can be attributed to them, i.e. did nothing wrong but still didn't deliver. BTW Vets report I have to say 'as ever' .... eagled eyed to boot and compliments Éamonn's background info and forensics.

Maybe because he is so gifted, players may think if we can get the ball to David through whatever means, he will conjure up his magic. Its the "whatever means" worries me in that yesterday for example he was given some very poor balls that were extremely low percantage to win or he was given balls at the wrong time such as when he was double teamed and near an end or side line. There is a time and a place for everything and that should extend to how and when David is presented ball. We have other talented forwards and we can also exercise patience and recycle when the need arises.

Firstly, I was at the game, The Upper Davin is my preferred over the Cusack or Hogan as it gives a great view of formation and defensive set up and how defenders move in unison or adapt to the play as it develops. Firstly, yes Kerry supporters were sparse on the ground and when the final whistle went after the penalty shootout and the Armagh crew headed North the the sheer lack of numbers was fairly evident, in saying that, having a pop at fans for not making the excursion is crass as being honest, for a family, it is an expensive day out.
Anyway back to the play, Kerry like Dublin and Galway were naturally going to be rusty and although we struggled to make the ball stick early doors, there was an inevitable feeling about the outcome by the forty odd minute mark when one felt that the westerners day was run.
On our own team and set up, our defensive set up and breaking from the back, it wasn’t as fluid or tight as previous games but I squarely put this down to weather and the lay off. For some reason we appeared to target Mayo aerially with DC the primary target, due to his lack of match sharpness, early ankle injury and the weather, we had little success. We also didn’t push up on Mayo as we have done on other opposing teams but it’s no harm I suppose to have a plan B and C as the run in approaches.
It was great to see players like Tom a Sull and Geaney finding form but the bypass of Diarmuid and Paudie as well as Moynihan is a worry.
The question now going forward is to stick or twist, Moran is fine for Aidan Shea as it’s like with like, but the likes of Fenton, Howard or McCarthy is a different story. A fit Adrain and Barry are imperative to our progression. The direct running of Joe Connor may be an alternative to drive at a tired defense. The form of Killian too was an added bonus, I just fear we may have wronged DC by leaving on too long especially when we knew we were home and hosed - I hope this decision does not come back to haunt us.
Hopefully the rustiness will abate and the running into the tackle and spills will be eradicated .
Still like semi finals, quarter finals are about winning, ticking the box and driving on…

Like you both lads, I'm in exile for 49% of the year up in Mayo, I thought our representative support up in Dublin was pitiful yesterday, embarrassing, I try in as much as I can try to go to all Kerry hurling and football games, support all things Kerry and be as patriotic as what will logistically, practically and financially will let me be. It's very difficult to go to all games, everybody has their own reasons, be it those three or personal, I completely understand that. It is a well known fact since 2011, that Kerry has the lowest disposable income levels in the 32 counties of Ireland, North Kerry being economically poor. This I know, will effect our support at games, but sadly, this has always been the same down through the decades, with the exception of the 'Páidí Effect' from 1996 - 2002, we garnered a lot of youth supporters going to all of our games in huge numbers, when the general atmosphere at games was better back then, with a lot more flags and klaxons / air horns, not like the demour, pacified situation generally today, taking away the Canal End up in Crike Park, not helping, at least Hill 16 is still there. It is correct and easy to ascertain that if there was a paltry 1,200 - 2, 000 Kerry supporters there yesterday. Armagh filled 40% of the stadium, Galway probably hah between 5,000 - 7,000, a brutal representation from them, but one has to bear in mind that they are still in the hurling, so they can't afford to be out every weekend, this is my point, GAA HQ must revert back to finals in September, this is not working, it will revert back within 3 years, people cannot afford to, especially at present in being on the road every week to two weeks. This is simply unsustainable irrespective of whatever the players think. On the match itself, I thought the Mayo support was the worst I've ever seen at Croke Park, it simply was a case that they never really believed that they were going to win the game, they turned up more in hope than expectation, I really felt sorry for them and the team afterwards. Horan will surely go now. It was also the worst Mayo performance seen in many years in Croke Park. Seeing Keegan on the pitch with his child afterwards does not bode well for them, they are well past their best now, they were toothless and ineffective up front, but were competitive right up to half time, Aidan O' Shea was angry when taken off, quite a few to retire now, a lot of retirements needed for Mayo I think. Our boys were very rusty, but we were still so much better than them in transitioning the ball, first touch, overlapping, kick passing, that performance will not do against Dublin though, but they are no great shakes neither. The football in general this year, Minor, U20 and Senior has been a pike of *e! on the whole, the standard has gone way back this year overall on those three grades. Like school standards, dating and life in general. David Moran played excellent, 3 points, David Geaney finding his mojo again after a few years in the doldrums. David Clifford I hope will be good, was a worry yesterday though, he did not want him to come off, eventhough from where I was seated, Jack was signalling for him to come off. Gough had a very poor second half refereeing, gave us nothing, we had to work harder in getting frees, he simply didn't trust his empires with the calling of the Hawkeye. Overall, we did in what we had to do, albeit not convincingly, plenty to ponder about, but at least we have, better to sort these out now before Dublin, the Dubs can't say the same though. We live in hope. That's nothing to do with Gough. He gets a call from the Hawkeye official if there's an issue with an umpire's decision. That's why the call is always overturned in a situation like that. Referee can request hawkeye as well, always can if need be, happens in hockey all of the time with Super Slow Motion Replay for infringements.

One thing Kerry needs to work on before the semi final on is turnovers, even Mayo's 13th point came from a comical turnover from a misplaced pass. A fair few in the first half was Kerry messing about. I've absolutely nothing to back this up but it's my opinion that no other team run directly into the tackle as much as we do. We have a team littered with hugely talented footballers but you'd need to have incredible strength to match this skill to break through a tackle against any intercounty footballer, not to mind trying to break through a double or treble tackle. With all the S&C work that player have done and the condition they're in, the hits are fairly robust. What was once given as a free for a strong challenge is now considered by referees as part of the game and will be left go. I can understand the frustration with David Gough yesterday for frees he should have given for illegal challenges but we need to be clever and understand that these will not be given, especially in Croke Park where you are expecting to be meeting the strongest.

James Horan has stepped down. What will his legacy be. Eternal loser or gallant tryer.. Ah come on, ‘ethereal loser’ is a bit harsh, he was extremely unlucky to come up against a highly skilled and financed Dublin side. Seriously unlucky yes, but his team is just missing that fraction that makes them the class above

If a ball goes wide and an umpire gives a score, the referees watch beeps, to signal an error, that is why Hawkeye is then deployed for public viewing, If the ref ever calls a hawkeye view after a score has been awarded, I can guarantee you 100% that the ‘score’ will be scratched.

A fair few in the first half was Kerry messing about. Can anyone explain to me why so many of our players have a fascination of soloing with their weaker leg? Gavin White, at full pelt elects to solo with his right and, on many occasions, loses control of the ball leading to turnovers after doing all the hard work. David Clifford himself lost possesion of the ball V Tyrone last year soloing with his right at a vital time in the game. David Moran constantly solos with his left, and yesterday Shane Ryan was carrying the ball up the Cusack stand side soloing on his left. I understand how the likes of Tomás Ó Sé used to solo left hand to right foot to speed up his run, but thats still soloing on his stronger foot. Its just something I've been noticing an awful lot the last 2 years, and especially notice it when we turn over possesion

Well no other team hoping to win the All Ireland takes the ball into the tackle as much as Kerry. However i suspect that some of the 24 'turnovers' were actually when poor passes were sent in the direction of DC. Johnny Giles would call it giving away the ball cheaply. Some of the passes were to Davids bootlaces. In the Sigerson Cup game v Queens, a sweeper was put in front of DC and it worked reasonably well. I wonder will Dublin try that. I just watched the game in full again. SoS came into things well as the game went on which is a positive. PG seemed to be finding a bit of form too. Kerry got 3 points from the offensive mark. Jack Savage isnt featuring at all. Dara Moynihan and Burns are ahead of him it seems but kicking a few long range points is not in their locker it seems. What if DC is nullified? You are depending on SoS, Tom Sullivan Paul Geaney and Killian to get most of the scores then. SoB is a great man to contribute as shown by the expert pass for the goal and he will pop up with a point or two and draw a few fouls. We need a big game from Paudie and we need the midfielders to contribute more offensively.

(Presuming he is facing goal). The only time you should look to take a man on is when you have him one on one really as you can go left or right or turn back. Or if the plan is to draw him in and slip the ball off before the tackle is made. There is no point looking to burst past if there are multiple players as one will stand you up and the rest will strip the ball. Similar to the choke tackle Les Kiss brought into irish rugby.

I understand that completely, hence in general teams favouring right footed players playing right side (with exception of corner forwards), and left footed players playing on left wing. All instances I am referring to, including Davids turnover, are when the players are not taking men directly on, more so in general play
