Maybe something the county board could look at is to prepare players more for this kind of thing. How to deal with it etc.

To be honest, I laughed when I read that tweet. Completely insane. The person sending that letter clearly is mentally ill.

I think EF knew the younger players (like all young lads) were on social media a lot , and its something he couldn't really control. After Galway game they were probably reading nothing but negative comments about himself and how tactically poor he was. When explayers then had a go he feared his command of the dressing room could be lost . If things panned out differently last week and Kerry got to a semi-final and either beat Dublin or had a close game credibility could be restored and he could move on planning for next year. But I'd say he knew all week that if Monaghon won he couldnt stay on. I felt sorry for the man , he was visibly shaking and fuming because I don't think he wanted to go and he defiantly felt let down by a few people.. But Look at the abuse Mickey Harte shipped last year after semi final defeat. A few explayers had a go at him and half of Tyrone wanted him gone. But Mickey was stubborn and rode the storm , Tyrone now look a lot stronger this year. Although Mickey possibly is in a different situation, compared to EF who has a new job and young family starting out. But this abuse unfortunately is not exclusive to Kerry , this is social media getting more and more powerful , people who never kicked a football feeling they have a right to say what they want because they know they are protected by their anonymity behind a keyboard. More explayers now on social media with duties to fulfil and followers to get. The question will now start to be asked does an Amateur manager need this grief.

Sick stuff indeed. At the same time, players probably get much worse abuse from opposition terraces. Imagine the stuff Donaghy gets thrown at him from the Hill or at Healy Park. They must be used to it surely. And, for all we know, that particular letter could have come from an outsider masquerading as a Kerryperson. It would be instructive to hear just how much of this has been going on and whether there is any pattern i.e. is it just a handful of *s? (surely it is!). It's disappointing to think that such disgraceful carry-on could be seen as representative of Kerry fans generally; no doubt there are plenty that will gleefully seize on it as a stick to beat us with.

I wouldn't argue too much with you on this but the Harte situation in Tyrone is quite unique. No way would any Kerry manager survive with the track record Harte has had these last 10 years.

It will obviously be a very small number but so what. I don't care if others use it as a stick to beat us with. That is not really relevant to the issue at hand. No right thinking person believes that this is what Kerry fans are about and if they do try and use it as a stick, f*ck them.

The Letters craic is being over played totally. Anybody who goes out of their way to write a letter to the manager of a county team can’t be taken seriously and shouldn’t be. Eammon knows this too. Once the first line of these letters is read and the intentions of the letter are established, it should be fired into the bin and scoffed at.
I’d be surprised if Eamonn actually has a box of letters at home. I can’t fathom to think why he’d hold on to such things. I’m sure he kept onto a few beauts that lads sent him picking the their “teams” with the likes of Tommy Walsh fullback and other comical suggestions. All we’re talking about is the “animals” who more or less left EF with no choice but to walk for the “sake” of kerry football.
If you judged the Senior managements teams performance from the tail end of last year to the end of this year, you couldn’t give them more than a score of 4/10. There’s no getting away from that. And yes EF was right to have a pop at the idiots out there, but your fools if you don’t think he knew it would deflect things away from the black and white facts that are the results and lack of direction/progress made over the last 12 months.
The lack of Balance is really irritating. We as Kerry people have come out worse than anyone out of this. This notion of us being “animals” has taken on serious legs, we look like deluded fools to outside counties. No one in Kerry expected us to win and All Ireland this year. NOBODY DID. All people we looking for this year was progress. We conceded 4-47 in 3 super 8 games. Call it what it is, we were extremely poor this year, an 19 year old freak talent scored 4-19 for us. He was the only guy to put in 3 performances over 3 days. Without him we were a division 2 side. So yes we’ll debate the merits of the scandalous “abuse”, but can we please also accept and aknowledge that this was our most disappointing 12 months in over 20 plus years

With all the controls on players' lifestyles today, it's a wonder they're not on a social media ban. It wouldn't be the worst idea. Personally, I think anyone in that position is crazy to be on twitter and the like.

I have no evidence so can't really go further with it but I would contend it is not their kids who are sending these letters but rather the origin of the species.

But I'd suspect with young lads now it's impossible to police . It's everywhere, you've also got young Kerry lads well used to winning since minor age and I'm sure like the attention that social media allows. Very hard to stop it when the horse is bolted. Although to be fair the guys picked for the senior team played well and didn't let anyone down.

Tis also probably true to say that if Killian hadnt got a red v Galway, Kerry might have got a draw v Galway. A tight chessgame was in the balance till then.
EF might have stuck with the sweeper v Monaghan and curtailed McManus even more. Another draw or a win with Shane Murphy in goals.
Home game then v Kildare while Galway and Monaghan bate each other up on Salthill.
Kerry facing Tyrone in the semis....
There wouldnt be a word about hate mail then i can assure you.

So yes we’ll debate the merits of the scandalous “abuse”, but can we please also accept and acknowledge that this was our most disappointing 12 months in over 20 plus years Yes, the Kerry public (and I am not counting the fringe of cranks, who have always been with us and always will be) were very forbearing with Eamonn and Co. People understood that he took over at a bad time. We appreciated his successes, and that he was integrating new players. I don't think the fans got carried away with the 2017 NFL victory either, but it felt at the time like Kerry were closing the gap to the Dubs. It felt significant, if not the real thing. And I would contend that the Dubs have not really pulled away since. But Kerry have regressed, and been found wanting when it mattered on a number of occasions. There was an element of self-destruction to many of the recent bad days. These issues have been well covered. It is Eamonn's right to mention these letters if he so wishes, but I feel it is an error. Such cranks should be ignored.

Meant to add - the type of individual who writes abusive letters to players will surely get a kick out of thinking they played some part in persuading Fitzmaurice to walk away.

I think the letters issue is a side show. Overall EF had a decent record. But since the high of 2014 the graph has been slipping downwards. No show in 2015 final, played their part in a gripping semi in 16, but let slip a winning lead, twice. a defensive mess in both games v Mayo in 2017. And now failure to qualify from the group stages. I don't think that's acceptable in year 6 of his tenure. Might get away with it in year 1 or 2. I think he was right to go now. He comes across as a good guy but his time was up. 6 years at it but unfortunately for him it was travelling in the wrong direction. Kerry fans expect their team to be extremely competitive at all times and that wasn't the case this year. 6 points down to Kildare at home approaching ht is nowhere near good enough for Kerry in a crunch game for you. I don't buy in to the Animals thing, ok tradition dictates that expectations are always high but I see nothing wrong with that. Put it another way, you know you are in trouble when lowered expectations become the norm. Really interested to see who gets the job now. I wonder would an outsider be acceptable at all in the absence of a strong fav from within. McGuinness or Gilroy Maybe?

my reflections on Eamon's era
did well overall, people need to recall not many if in fact probably no credible contenders wanted the job when he took over and there was no real expectations of an Ireland senior title. It was deemed a transitional period and he delivered an all Ireland in year 2 and had us right up there in contention in 3 other seasons. The last 2 seasons we were not in contention so it is the last 2 seasons where it went wrong but in those two seasons he has bedded in a half dozen or so young players under 21 into the team which will serve the new manager well. Our 15 years of non competitiveness at minor up to 2014 came back to haunt Kerry and Eamonn and was largely outside his control. We don't have the top quality players in the 22 to 27 age group which is the key age group, we have them in the 19 to 21 bracket who will grow into all Ireland winners in the 22 to 26 bracket and a new golden era will commence.
he should have looked at Shane Ryan in goals, Outfield play at club level is a bonus for an inter county keeper as he is a better all round player for the outfield experience, Cluxton plays a lot outfield for his club and in another code, witness the brilliant saves by Nicky Quaid and Eoin Murphy in recent weeks, both regular outfield players for their clubs. there were mistakes but who doesn't make them, Jim Gavin made plenty in the AIF last yr but got away with it and in victory the mistakes are just wrote out of memory and history. Stephen Rochford made them too
it is forgotten Eamonn was in a backroom team with Jack when Sam was won so he had given massive service really
hopefully he can enjoy the time out of the limelight, his resignation will bring, he has other commitments in work and life
hopefully also we will see him with teams again, be it the Dingle school teams, Finuge , Feale Rangers and maybe he might drift back to hurling , he has strong hurling pedigree plenty of county championship medals with Lixnaw and wore the county jersey in underage hurling. anyways best of luck to him.

Sinead Kissane (wan of our own!) also threw in her tuppeny bit on the eve of the Monaghan game. This is the same docksy who used the media to badger Eddie O'Sullivan on no less than 40 successive instances, into resigning as Irish Rugby manager.
I also note another 'wan of our own' in The Independent now cautioning us that we should 'think before we type' - does he know something we don't? The Chairman of the county board specifically stated that social media was not the issue, and now we are told the abusive letters Éamonn and the players received were actually typed?
All in all this forum is constructive and members are known to and/or traceable by the county board. Any criticism is generally constructive and new members are vetted. People are entitled to air their views through freedom of speech and I recall a GAA HQ officer saying he engages with social media to pick up new ideas.
In the above cases though it is not social media, it is two Kerry journalists writing in national print media, and the badgering material and the misleading statement is there in black and white for all to see. Could the badgering have cost us the Monaghan game? Well it was targeted, timely and in my opinion unadulterated blackguarding of Éammonn and the team, and of course the supporters, i.e. those who didn't write the letters to management and players.
So it is our print media journalists who need to 'think before they type', and their editors also need to 'think before they print.'
The Kingdom will be back for Sam!
PS I was also targeted on here by the above fraternity, and though it didn't really bother me, it was vile, and it could hurt some people badly, innocent people. Those who did it are thugs and scum and what was not so bad was that 99% of the community on here saw them for what they are. I suppose if we all play our part and there are consequences then recurrence will be less likely.

No Kerry Manager, all the way back to 60's has ever survived going 4 years without winning an Ireland. History shows that Kerry managers are always treated harshly

His mistakes have been well documented, but he deserves a lot of credit for the work he has done over his 6 years. There were very few looking for the job when he took it and has done a decent if not brilliant job. I always felt he represented Kerry football very well and I’d like to thank him and wish him well for the future.
