Watching that video there is no mention of anonymous mail and he never references "criticism of young players". He says, very fairly, that criticism of the team (and management?) affects younger players. That is very different to criticism of younger players. So thats two interviews where EF makes no mention of hate mail. I believe in the interests of the good name of Kerry football supporters (if there is any good name left) that EF should clarify one way or the other if he received such hate mail.

He had to clarify the reference to "younger players" being abused.

Perspective. The general Kerry support body shouldn't be tarnished with this as is the case in last few days. As I said before, how big is the box?

So thats two interviews where EF makes no mention of hate mail. I believe in the interests of the good name of Kerry football supporters (if there is any good name left) that EF should clarify one way or the other if he received such hate mail. Tony Leen says he received "anonymous mail". I believe he did 100%. A lot of sick puppies out there. Just listening to some podcasts etc about the weekend and the resignation etc. I think the narrative is being spun pretty unfairly about the Kerry supporters to be honest. Ignore the lunatics sending hate mail etc. The message out there seems to be that we expected to win the All Ireland this year and we were negative towards the team and players as well as management. It fits neatly into the whole 'animals' stuff as well. I think there has been little to no criticism of players especially the young ones at all.The critics have been of the management or the lack of it within the team. They are two different things entirely. I heard on newstalk this morning they were saying we might not find anyone better to do the job and we should have been more patient and given the young players time etc. There was no negativity directed at the team or players in Kerry. We understand we are in a transition phase and no body in their right mind expected an all Ireland this year. However, what we did expect was management to show they have learned from past mistakes. The performance against Galway was woeful and we abandoned our style completely to play a sweeper system that didn't work the previous year against Mayo. Also like against Mayo last year our management watched on from the sideline as our full back line was torn to shreds by ciaran McManus and waited until half time to fix it. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting differing results. Also it must be asked why were Kerry so flat in both games against Mayo last year and all our post Munster games this year and why the form of all the senior players dipped at once? Eamonn did a good job and deserves respect but, it's time to move now. The appointment of any new manager is always a sort of crystal ball gazing. I will put it to people this way. Lets say all our young lads come through to be great players and man for man by this time next year we are an exact match for the Dubs in the final. Based on all previous evidence do you think there was the tactical smarts on our sideline (selectors included) to outwit Jim Gavin?? I think Eamonn after the 'classic' against Dublin in 2013 and the replay against Mayo in 14, didnt fully trust his defence and deemed a conservative approach the best way to protect our short comings at the back. I think our win over Donegal in 14 confirmed that in his own mind. In fairness to the man some of the best football I have ever seen was in 2013 in the firs half against cork in Killarney and Dublin 2013. The positioning of Declan as a libero behind the midfield for the 14 Munster final was a master stroke. In the replay against Mayo in extra timehe made all the right calls. Bringing back on Paul Geaney, Mark Griffin to centre back, Bringing Lyne back on. Ultimately Eamonn and his team were pretty good at developing a plan before the game and implementing it. Dublin in 13, Donegal in 14, periods of attacking the Dubs kickout in 15 and 16. Hiowever, their in game situations left them down. We will only really know how good Eamonn was / is next year when the new man takes over.

It's arguable that the "anonymous letter" is almost part of our culture. I seem to recall that Ogie Moran was the recipient of some choice correspondence during his tenure in the early nineties. There is an article in today's Examiner where Anthony Daly writes of the letters he received while coaching Clare and there is reference to the same sort of thing also in other counties. Recently one of the RTE weather forecasters (Joanna Donnelly I believe) posted on twitter a copy of an anonymous letter she received following her coverage of Storm Ophelia. Apparently she was getting too big for her boots! My point is that the sending of anonymous letters is certainly not a Kerry phenomenon, and it is not confined to the GAA either. It is sad stuff.

It, "anonymous letters", is a direct quote from Fitzmaurice and is in the piece I linked to above. The video I posted earlier wasn't the entire press conference.

when the facts change i will change my mind. It is a fact that I have not heard EF say anything about it in two interviews.
It is "duirt ban liom" territory at this stage with Leen. He couldnt even get the reference to "abuse of young players" correct.

The Examiner gives a direct quote from Fitzmaurice about "anonymous letters". It isn't a third hand info and I am not sure why you would doubt it's veracity. The reference to "criticism of younger players" didn't sound credible so fair to question that.

It was never presented as a direct quote.

This gets worse. He knew it was out there since Saturday that his "clumsy language" was being misunderstood to mean that Kerry fans were "criticising the young players" playing for Kerry and that this was why EF was retiring. To protect the young players from abuse!
EF never said that.
How do we know...we can hear what EF says on two videos.
Tony Leen didnt do anything to clear this up till today Tuesday lunchtime when someone asked him about it.

Tony Leen is a serious journalist and unlike some so-called journalists doesn't get his info from forums like this and so isn't going to be looking at this site and see some of us taking issue with that claim. It was clumsy wording, which he has acknowledged. No need to make a mountain out of a molehill.

The letters or personal abuse were completely abhorrent and I dont think anyone can debate that.
However the constant discussion on this is stalling any debate on Fitzmaurice's management.
Oisin McConville covered quite well on yesterday's Second Captain's podcast- the letters were ridiculous (and should never happen) but there was a lot to be critical of- this needs to be discussed and not just constant rambling about letters.

At this stage i dont believe anything Tony Leen says about "anonymous letters". EF was recorded twice ..and made no reference to it. A random comment to a box full of anonymous letters means little without clarity. it could be two letters, 10 letters or 10,000 letters. I take the comment with a tiny pinch of salt.

Oisin McConville covered quite well on yesterday's Second Captain's podcast give up a summation of what he said Essentially that he made a lot of bad calls over the last few years and that he is open to criticism on tactics & selection. I still think the goalkeeping situation is what rankles the most
