Many rumours about concerning Sheehan starting in goal- would be complete madness in my opinion given the specialist nature of the position- a good catcher and kicker he may be but far more than that required! Yes thank God us on here don't pick the team. Issue 1 is kickkouts - they need lots of work by the entire team and involve hitting moving targets. I want to see Sheehan on for the last 20 minutes for trees but I have no idea where. FF line or HF line maybe. NOT midfield. The last 20 minutes is when Dublin rumble.

So is Ciarán Kilkenny the hammer to be hammered the next day??!! The media would have you believe that Dublin have more hammers in stock than Kellihers Hardware in Tralee have.

Just a few questions in anticipation of what should be a great match; Will Kerry consider playing Bryan Sheehan in goal? Is Paul Murphy or Darren o Sullivan likely to try and negate cian o Sullivan's influence ? Is Dublin's perceived weakness under the high ball a fallacy or can Kerry exploit it with more nuanced ball? Is fenton's pace in the middle a game changer in terms of pushing up on dublin's kick out? Will dublins indiscipline be their undoing ? Will EF persist with youth in the half back line ? For their to be a positive answer to this question for Kerry, they will have to play with 6 forwards, and I don't mean nominally. The 6 forwards will have to play as forwards. Dublin do not play with a sweeper, Cian O'Sullivan is inevitably left as a free man because no county plays with 6 forwards against Dublin. Most don't even play with 5. A sweeper is usually a 7th or 8th player in defence. So to negate his influence you need to make sure Cian just doesn't pass on Darren O'Sullivan or whoever is designated to play at CHB. It happened after half time in the final last year, DOS came on and matched up with COS, but within a few minutes I think McCaffrey or McCarthy switched on to DOS, if memory serves me.

Just curious, if a player starts in goal and then moves outfield does he have to put on an outfield jersey with number 1 on it?

Serious bench Dublin will have the next day.If James McCarthy starts. Paddy Andrews Paul Mannion Eoin O'Gara Cormac Costello. Four forwards that can change the game. Kerry will need goals to win this one.

The atmosphere should be cracking the next day. I always find the Kerry Dublin Semi-Final atmosphere superior to the Finals, you've less neutrals I suppose. 2007 and 2013 were great days whereas I thought it was very flat last year, although the rain didn't help.

I hope so Jigz, it's all been a bit flat in Croke Park this year, attendances are way down. Even on Saturday which was "sold out" there were loads of spare seats and apparently loads of tickets to be bought outside on the street. Last year's all Ireland was so disappointing on all fronts and the weather just compounded the misery. It had been beautiful for the minor game and then it all changed.

I think I along with everyone else is going to be intrigued about how we will line up against Dublin. ED has always started the team that has been named in the programme in each of his games barring the odd late injury. Will this be the time he will actually bluff and name a different team to the one that takes the field? As everyone has alluded to on here its around the middle that we are caught for pace. And as some one else has posted I think we should push up and go man for man on Dublin all over the field and forget about a sweeper. Why give them a free runner coming up the field all the time? Realistically if Marc and O'Mahony don't start it will only be our two midfielders that will be lacking in pace against their direct opponents ( I presume bastick will be kept in reserve). Moran has been poor for a long time now. Apart from the two games against Mayo in 14 he has been poor in the championship. I thought he was anonymous in the 14 final and it was Anthony Maher who did all the heavy lifting in the semi-final and final in 2015. Maher is probably the most mobile of our orthodox midfielders (with Moran being just behind). MDMA and Fenton are both sprightly enough so there is no point picking one immobile midfielder and getting a half forward to cover for him; as who cover the half back the half forward was meant to be marking? Its like a game of Dominoes. I think we need to compress the game into Dublins half as much as possible. Play 4 or even five forwards inside their 45 if at all possible. Why drop back and give the dubs acres of space to run into? Play the odd highball in there. With that many bodies so close to goal anything could happen. I think Lyne might be a viable option for half forward in this game. We have pace in James, Darran, BJK, Geaney (Less so) Murphy, O'Brien all knocking around the forwards. We need to keep some pace on the bench too. Dublin would have a field day if we introduced; Gooch, Sheehan, Buckley from the bench to the forwards. Its going to be some 3 weeks. Any truth in the rumor Tommy Walsh is back inside ?

Looks like Kerry might be playing Tipp in a challenge on the weekend before semi final. I have it from a good sourse that Kerry are looking to stay in Limerick that weekend.
Anyone hear something similar?

There def. Staying in limerick weekend before semi final, I was sugguesting that they may play tipp behind closed doors. Looks like I'm wrong on that front alot of planning and plotting ahead over the next few weeks.
Could we see B. Sheehan in the full forward line with KD? and PG James centre forward?

Anyone hear something similar? Prep for the anticipated replay?? I think Tommy Walsh is going to be sprung in this, and it's ideal for him, he has been so under the radar since April you'd need sonar to know anything about him. Considering our loss of height & experience in the backs, it would seem all the more likely

If I were a Dublin supporter I would be a little bit concerned about MDMA's form. I have seen him play twice in the championship, this year, and I feel that his influence is waning around the middle and he looks a bit tired. Fenton is some player, he is nearly worth 2 players at this stage.

Bastick has a very good understanding with o Sullivan and I can see mdma being kept in reserve. Id say he is exhausted after his club exploits .

In reality, The Kerry Team were not too far off the pace last April or September 2015. Its the sideline that were more off the pace.
However, the sideline seem to be learning from their mistakes.(leaving aside the debacle where even after 4 attempts we failed to kick a 50 in the first 5 minutes against Clare)
Aidan O Mahony and Mark O Se, have been demoted to the subs bench since with Morley and Beaglaoich earning starting positions, giving more youth and pace to the backs since. Griffin is playing better at fullback now also, once he plays from the front.
Dublin will most likely be down 3 all star backs from last years final. At this stage of the competition, this must be a negative. So both teams are as close as ever in quality.
The tactic should be to keep Dublin pinned back. Donaghy, playing in the FF line, has the aggression and ball winning ability to worry them. With Geaney, O Sullivan, O Brien, and O Donoghue buzzing around they should kick points and score goals. Even if they don't, the Dubs will have to stay back to guard against them.
Midfield will be crucial. I think we can win our fair share of our own kickouts, but when we don't, we need our centerfielders, with Walsh, Murphy fighting Dublin's on rushing attacks like tigers. Moran will need to up his performance over the last few years. He's still good going forward if given space, but he doesn't get space against the better teams, and he has been a poor defending centerfied player always. So he will need to up it. Maher, not sure if he will be up to speed, but he has been gearing his year for this weekend, so hopefully he comes good.
Our forwards need to disrupt Cluxtons kickout. They did it in last years final and it worked, but they binned it in the league final and it didn't.
When we win our Kickout, or intercept Dublins, we need to kick cleverly to Donaghy and Geaney, both good in the air. Even Sheahan can win high ball in and around the square and he could come on.
Keep Dublin pinned back, mark Connolly closely, break even in Midfield, take a good percentage of our chances in front of goal, and we'll have a good performance. Whether its good enough to win is another question, but lets not leave Croke Park sick for not doing our best strategically and physically.

Bryan Sheehan at full foward with geaney and o donoghue either side of him.. Wat do people think of that? In theory it isn't bad. All can win there own ball and kick scores and it allows Sheehan to be on the field for frees. If I'm dublin I would put Philly McMahon on him and tell him to go foward at every opportunity. I just can't see Sheehan running the length of croke park to stay with him.

If Kerry have difficulty getting early and good ball into Donaghy at 14, it becomes twice as hard with Sheahan who neither has the height nor the spring of Kieran. Any ball in front will be mopped up by Cian O'S. I think Dublin would be pleased to see him start.

Just a few things that most people on here seem to agree on.
Our backs are well settled with plenty of pace.
Midfield has no mobility and cannot track runners putting defence under pressure.
Half forward line are over worked filling space behind our midfield when we get over run.
Without a target man in FF we are isolated and too far from goal to hurt Dublin when we turn them over.
So my view is the following:
We need KD in F2F
We need to push up on Dublin kickout force turn over higher up the field
We need to go 15 v 15 a shoot out No way can we sit back and try and break we don't have the players to do that......then again we could get steam rolled if they get out into midfield with plenty of space to run into.....I'm getting more silver treads in my hair as I over think the up coming power house that is Dublin

Kerry should go 15 on 15 and pick horses for courses.think we need to Think outside the box to beat Dublin Enright on Brogan Marc o se on dean rock Killian Young on Flynn Crowley on mcmenamen Murphy on kilkenny Jonathan Lyne on Connolly Griffin on Fenton Moran/maher on dara McCauley James on Cian o Sullivan Darren on McCarthy Johnny Buckley/donnacha on John small Barry John Keane on David Byrne Geaney on Jonny cooper Stephen o brien on McMahon
Think these match ups are good, real pace in the forward line low quick ball into the inside line and they can beat there men. Griffin at midfield as he will track Fenton. Think mcmenamen is there danger man at the moment and Crowley is best to mark him. Bring on gooch Moran donoghy and Sheehan with 10-15 to go to really take the game to them

Of course he has not been the same player we all remember from '09 but his presence around the panel is surely a big loss.

In the championship this decade, Kerry have not scored more points that Dublin... in 2011, 2013 or 2015.
I cant for the life of me see how this trend will change the next day.
So, as I see it, Kerry's ONLY chance is to score more goals that Dublin...they probably need two more goals that Dublin get. Even Donegal outpointed Kerry in 2014 final.
So Kerry must STOP the Dubs from getting a goal. If that happens then its good night Irene.
So how do Kerry achieve those two targets.... don't concede a goal and score two goals?
Some sort of Berlin Wall on their own 45 and the quick counter seems to be one or....go for height in the full forward line and hope for a few breaks.......

Nice team gaacrazy - the match-ups are very good! I would disagree on 2 points though...
I don't think we go should go for a full court press, to borrow a basketball tactic. If our average age was 5 years less, then I would agree. But this only plays into the more athletic team's stength. We need to keep it tight and keep our shape with the match-ups you have. Sure - vary it - do it for parts of the game, but not possible for 70+. This does not mean that we don't play man for man - simply means that if Flynn/Kilkenny etc want to go back to their half-back/full back line for a ball let them off. Peter and Murphy to hold their shape.
Donaghy is a must-starter at FF. As we saw the last day Cian o S (who I think is highly over-rated by most people, due to the fact that most teams are taking one of their half forwards back to play as a sweeper and leaves him marking space) had to drop back to marshall in front of AOS at FF. With Donaghy this is an even greater need for them. By placing James O D at centre forward you have some serious scoring ability in the danger zone in front of COS so Dublin then need Kilkenny/Bastick/McAuley to drop back there - so limiting them going forward. Donaghy HAS to play at FF.....
And please, please Eamonn do not play our best defender PM at centre forward....play to our own strengths.

I also meant to pose an open question.....if we don't play Griffin in midfield, who is best suited to give us the pace there. Could we be surprised aka Ambose debut 1984 Munster final? Are any of the new lads in training going well enough I wonder...

Wherever Sam goes after this years Championship , we know that the match against the Dubs - or the Final (Dubs permitting) - will be the swan song for some of our greatest warriors who have given us so many happy days and have filled every Kerry supporter with pride. I refer to Marc , Aidan , Bryan , Star and quite possibly Gooch. The Dubs have been a thorn in their sides for the past few years - late in 2011 and 2013 , in last years All Ireland and the League this year - and I have no doubt but that Kerry will make a monumental effort to ensure the trend is broken this time. The miles on the clocks of the above mentioned are slowing them down but they are all good for a contribution at some stage of the proceedings and no better men to call upon when the finishing line is in sight.
But we must be close enough to the Dubs at that stage to close the gap and it is absolutely vital that the correct team is selected. Our possible midfield of Moran , Star ,Sheehan and Maher will not do. Maher would be an honourable exception to the lack of pace of the other three and whilst lack of game time and sharpness may tell against him surely he is good for 45 - 50 minutes ? But he must have a mobile and pacey partner and who better than Griffin who has never been 100% happy at full back - the responsibility inhibits him - but whose sorties outfield during the Clare match gave a clear indication of his strengths. Maybe Shane Enright to cover the No 3 spot and Murphy MUST be restored to a defensive role. There are plenty of Dublin speed merchants that Murphy would have no fear in picking up. He is not happy playing forward and with JOD back we have plenty options in attack. We were within 3 points of the Dubs last September - and probably lucky to be so close - and if Killian managed that goal towards the end , who knows ... And my opinion is that the terrible rain was a greater hindrance to our boys than the Dubs.
But our chances on the 28th depend entirely on the management. No options for a placekicker against Clare whilst never going to be fatal was poor planning. And what happened last year in the closing stages had the Dubs smiling and the rest of us pulling out our hair in disbelief. And I have never read anywhere or heard an explanation of the late decisions made on the line that day. And as for the public disagreement by management during those vital closing frantic minutes , well ... enough said.
We do have the players who have the skills and hopefully the fitness to stay with the Dubs and it should be noted the same Dubs are in uncharted territory when the end game is beckoning and they still have not closed the deal. Experience then comes into play and while they have that then so do we and all is up for grabs then. The Dubs are deserved favourites but we do have a chance and I'm sure the players remember their feelings as they trooped off a sodden Croke Park last year and do not want to revisit them. Hard its going to be but its 15 against 15 and we are Kerry.
