Sunday the 28th August has been marked on the calendar all year as the game that'll make or break our season.
Everyone expects Dublin but could Donegal have a say yet?
Tickets by the way are already on sale on tickets.ie

With Dublins injuries, Donegal's match practice and the fact that Dublin are defending champions all points towards Donegal causing an upset.
Not writing the Dubs off, they deserve to be favourites, but Donegal beating them would be less of a surprise than Tipp beating Galway by 9 points.

Donegal expended more fuel than they would have liked in overcoming Cork.
There is only so much fuel in the Donegal tank
They probably would prefer two weeks to get ready for Dublin.
That could be a big factor.
Jim McGuinness can snipe all he likes at the current Donegal manager but twas McGuinnes that left Paddy McBrierty on the bench for an hour of the 2014 final!

I think Paddy is under-rated, but that is hindsight, his best game was v Monaghan in the '14 Ulster Final. Yip, when a guy shows that form he is worth a permanent starting spot as he will burst into form and win games on his own. I have never noticed him play bad as to lose a game and subs are used if a fell is having an off day.

Agreed, a huge mistake by Mc Guinness in the 2014 final. Mc Brearty was electric when he came on that day. Why did Peadar Healy drop Colm O Neill does anybody know?

Think the argument for never playing Darran in the corner was strengthened yesterday. He's a real player from the half line.
If he could only sort out his tackling he'd be like a new player in a line badly in need of a spark.

That would have a lot to do with forward selections in 2014.

I cant see how Donegal will win this game- their players have gone backwards, their management is much weaker and they were there for the taking by a poor Cor team.
Dublin by a minimum of 7 with the game following the usual pattern of being tight for a spell early on and Dublin blowing a team away Kilkenny style in the 3rd quarter

Im more looking forward to the minors of the last few years coming of age than the game in 4 weeks. Sorry to be bleak the Monday after an 11 point win but we are kidding ourselves on current form and current profile of the squad if we think we will have the necessary tools to go any further.
If Donegal upset the apple cart we may have a chance but they will be well battle hardened by then and could well catch us over 70 mins.
If it is the Dubs then I can't foresee anything different from what we saw in April because we aren't trying anything radically different in our approach. I will happily eat a bakery full of humble pie if I am wrong!

Kerry have shown nothing really this year to say that they are better than other years. Dublin are still the top team in the Country. Donegal will give them a tough game but won't beat them and thats probably exactly what they need before a semi final. Kerrys midifeld is too slow. Our backs are not good enough to keep Dublins forwards in check. I think we will proably stay with them for 50 minutes but then Dublin will take it up a notch and bang in a couple of goals. It could be worse than the League Final for Kerry. I would love to be wrong but I don't see it.

Teams are honing their gameplans now to dealt with having to deal with their opponents pulling all their players back into defense. It's all about giving the top marksmen a few seconds to line up their shot for a score. We need to have James and Paul geaney and colm and Darren as the guys shooting for points between the D and the 45. Donnacha, buckley,Maher, Moran, donaghh etc are not dependable enough to kick these points that we so badly need.
We really miss the six or seven points that Declan and galvin kicked from the half forward line. Some of the kicking from distance yesterday was lamentable

The fiasco that is David Moran's long range free taking has been ongoing now for far too long. It should have been sorted out years ago. Unfair and demoralising to both the player and the team and very poor management of an important issue. Doesn't fill one with confidence in their ability to put the whole puzzle together.

I've kept my powder dry on this previously but it would seem that we have regressed a decent bit over the last 2 years in game-plan and skills. The attempts to get to a more physical running game has left the players looking jaded and lacking in basic kicking skills at times. I have previously expressed my frustration about us persisting with the same players who we know are either past it or not up to it and to be honest this is only becoming more infuriating.

But it was Darrach O'Connor who got the start ahead of McBrearty in the final, not McFadden so I don't think the brother-in-law thing has anything to do with it. The only reason I can see for this was that it was for sentimental reasons as O Connors father- Jigger- scored an early goal against us in a final for Roscommon. Other than that- it was utter lunacy to leave out McBrearty- beautiful utter lunacy

I dont think JMG did sentiment. McFadden was the bolt that held the whole Donegal attack together. He was phenomenal in 2012 for Donegal as the resident forward line player, often alone in that role.

hey donegal man.. question for you, or anyone else who might know. i rememebr a good few years back donegal got to an all ireland minor final or semi final and they used bring on a left footed free taker to take a kick at the very end of games. i think he might have been still u 16 at the time. i cant remember his name and was jsut wondering if anything ever came of that lad..?

Since they were the only team that stood out during a fallow period there and were eventually knocked out by Kerry, I presume that you're referring to the team in 2006 that had Murphy on it, but I can't think of who the free taker was. James Carroll of Gaoth Dobhair used to come on off the bench at corner forward, but he wound up emigrating. His brother is on the panel now and will be a big player in the years to come. Could have been Eoin Wade too, but I don't think that he had another year of eligibility left. I don't really have the memory for these types of questions, sorry!
Just on the McBrearty point, it wasn't the 2016 McBrearty that was dropped. Paddy wasn't a regular starter in 2014 in general, and was having a bit of a down year. He'd been floundering a bit as a starter but had looked considerably better as an impact sub - something that Donegal had been lacking, outside of Christy Toye, who'd been coming on earlier and earlier. And O'Connor was a very dangerous player, who did well to create exactly the type of goal chance you'd want from him, and was so, so close to getting it. He's been really derailed by injuries since, unfortunately. He's actually back in full training now but I doubt we'll see him this year. McBrearty & Brick Molloy did well off the bench on the day but at the time I didn't feel like they'd have done all that much better starting. But sure look, it worked out for you lot anyway!

I suppose we are no wiser now about our chances V Dublin/Donegal than we were at the start of the year(Or are we)(We still think we will be bate out the gap if it is the Dubs)?. The QF did nothing visually to enhance our prospects.
The first 5 minutes and those long frees and 45s was embarrassing.
If I was Fitzy I would give Kealy and Kelly 100 long range kicks from placed balls from different angles each and the man who converts most would play the semi final, because surely, there is nothing between them otherwise? also take their Obair Baile home and get practicing. They both have a fair belt of a ball. Their efforts couldn't be any worse than what we saw in the Qrtr Final.
This would at least show that we have a plan of some sort. Seeing this sort of farce from placed balls sucks confidence from a team and God knows we don't seem to be over egged in the confidence side of things either so far.
As much as I am a fan of Bryan, I don't think it is wise to carry him into the semi with his current form.
Paul Murphy has to be reinstated to the back 6......If Fitzy wants to persist with the defensive No 11 then why not put Fionn in there? He has a knack of kicking scores also and can play a fair bit of ball and has youth on his side. If not then Paul Geaney on to the 40 as Veteran suggested and Donaghy inside would be my way to go.
Maher and Moran looks like our best shot at a midfield starting partnership. They have 4 weeks to work together now and get Maher fit for the day.
The truth is if we cant get a handle on whats going on, then Jim Gavin cant either, and that can only be a good thing. OR!!! is it just what we are seeing is what we are going to get?
I personally feel we will see a different Kerry in four weeks time(And Oh Boy do we need to) with one or two wildcards thrown in.
My 15 for what it is worth.
Kealy/Kelly
Brian O Beaglaoich, Mark Griffin, Shane Enright.
Paul Murphy, Peter Crowley, Killian Young,
David Moran, Anthony Maher.
Stephen O Brien Fionn Fitzgerald Donnchadh Walsh
Darren O Sullivan Paul Geaney James O Donoghue.
If it is pace you are looking for then there you have it. With the exception of Mid Field of course but the two boys need to start Horsing people out of it. Win Ball as if they mean it. Both are well capable of providing a pass and linking the paly from back to front also.
You end up with a nice bench also with Kieran Donaghy, Colm Cooper, Bryan Sheehan, Barry John Keane.
Tadhg Morley, Marc O Sé, Aidan O Mahony,John Lyne. and a few of the young guns that are showing in training.
NOW YE ANIMALS.. .LOL Pick the bones outta that.

Not a bad team harey - agree that we need to mix things up a bit.
For me, Donaghy is a must at full-forward. I think Fitzy is only playing him at midfield to keep him ticking over. Not sure if people recall the panic that set in Dublin defence when he came on last year - they resorted to the most blatant foul (McAuley pull-down) not given that I have ever seen. Now with Carroll gone it make sit more important to do so. The current full back line for Dublin (assuming of course they beat Dubs), is not big - he would take any of the current 3. Dublin will have to put either Sullivan or McAuley there on him I think.
With regard to our lack of pace midfield, the answer is staring us in the face....Mark Griffin is plenty mobile and has the strength and physique to win any physical battle. To me he is too restricted at full or centre back, we should be using his pace and energy further out. I can hear the screams now....
What makes the Dubs tick are the 2 wing men - Flynn and Connolly. I think Flynn is slipping a bit but he will likely raise the game for semi. We need our best defenders on these 2 - Murphy and Crowley. I would also put Begley on Brogan - he has an uncanny ability to get block-downs and is the most suited to deal with Brogans ability to turn and shoot.
At centre back we need more physical presence and strength, even though Crowley is no wall-flower. I would put Maher in there. Leave Moran at midfield with Moran as the more attacking of the 2 midfielders due to his ability to place accurate passes.
So my team would be....
Kelly
Beaglaoich, Enright, Killian
Crowley, Maher, Murphy
Griffin, Moran
O Brien, Darren, Donncha Paul G, Donaghy, James
No room for Gooch - for me he is a corner forward - not mobile or physical enough for half line and wasting his real talents there. So it's 2 out of 3 for the corners, and Paul and James probably better to start. Bring Gooch on in second half when it opens up a bit.
Let the vitriol roll....

I'd have no problem with the idea of Griffin at midfield but I think there's no chance of it happening for the first time in an All Ireland SF.

Meathexile, I think Donaghy is an absolute banker to start the semi and I dare say Fitz seriously regrets not starting him last Sept. In your lineup, I would move Crowley to 6 and add Lyne to the half bk line - that he didnt get game time yday however would suggest he is not in the mix. Fitzys sentiment to prefer Mahony is admirable but would be foolish against Dublin who have his number for speed. Agree with the rest of your team. I will be amazed if Maher starts anywhere - he looked visibly weak yesterday and has clearly missed a lot of training and matches. For me its Gooch or ODonoghue for 1 spot - neither can beat an opponent for pace anymore nor can they track back without looking uncomfortable snd exposed. Playing both would be a luxury we simply cant afford. OBrien and OSul offer pace, Walsh the Industry, Star the ball winning ability, Geaney the finishing, and 1 of James or Gooch the creating. Griffin has the pace and power to play in the middle against Dublin but unless they have progressed this behind closed doors, it too wont see the light of day.

I hope to god that eamonn is pulling the greatest bluff of all time and we have something pretty severe up our sleeve for the semi final. There has been no progression at all throughout the championship this year. The same mistakes are being made and the same inadequacues are being highlighted each game.
Kick outs are still not great.
We are a rabble when run at. Our midfield is too slow and one pace. The free taking situation when Bryan Sheehan is not on the pitch is a farce.
I only hope we are working on something. I presume Donaghy will go into full forward fora the semi final. We might name a different team and this could be the one time that fits auricle names a dummy team.
I would love to see Mark Griffin around the middle. I don't know about Begley in the corner on someone like Brogan. Then we don't have a lot of options either. I think if we are playing Donegal I'd start Mahoney on Murphy but not against Dublin.
I wouldn't start the gooch either. Donaghy, Geaney and JOD is the full forward line or else drop Donaghy and play BJK in there.
Darren, Stephen O'Brien and Donachadha the half forward. Maybe release Paul Murphy back to the half back line or even midfield as a pair of legs. Midfield will be short kick outs against Donegal anyway and no contested ball really against the dubs.

Unless Eamonn Fitz is really going to surprise us, I don't see him making sweeping changes to the effect of moving Griffin to mf or maher to cb? I am even doubtful that he will move Murphy back to half back... I just have a bad feeling that Kerry are a bit lost at the moment, and don't have any aces up our sleeves, and a lot of it stems from midfield. The midfield game has completely changed in 2 years... 2 years ago we had the best midfielders in the country, and now a lot of people would say its our biggest problem area! Parts of the game yesterday looked terrible in terms of passing/shooting/defending, even when we looked ok with the long kickout we revert to some crazy short kickout tactics..
I'd like to see the following team (if it is the dubs!!)..
Kelly
Beaglaoich, Griffin, Enright
Cillian, Crowley, Murphy
Maher, Moran
O Brien, Darren, Donncha Paul G, Donaghy, James
I've a feeling Gooch will not be 100% fit by then.. Even if he is, do you drop OBrien/Darren? And put Gooch on the 40, which results in him having to spend half the game tracking back - which is almost as depressing a sight as seeing D. Moran trying to take a 45 :-(
With Gooch on the bench you also end up with a very strong looking bench, which you absolutely need: Gooch, Mahony, M Se, Sheehan, BJK, M Geaney, Lyne, Morley, Fionn Fitz, Kealy, AN Other

I think Donegal will really test Dublins mettle and it will be interesting to see how the Dublin fullback comes with a few high diagonal ones. If Dublin are seriously troubled by Donegals approach but manage to win, i think EF will have to try something similar.
We will be a lot wiser next Monday.

A half forward line made up of any 3 of O Brien, Darren, Donnacha or Gooch doesnt fill me with a whole pile of optimism at this stage. I'm not sure what the alternatives are and maybe they are the best at our disposal but can see that being exploited severely by Dublin
