I wrote this back in April in the run up to the league final, mental toughness does play a part and it would appear we just haven't got enough of it. "I've said it before but I feel it's even more true now that though Dublin are strong & have many great players, if teams believe they could beat them rather than the hype it is possible. There's a myth out there that they're unbeatable, they're not , they just have the belief in themselves and don't give up. Instead of talking about how to play Dublin's game, we should be concentrating on playing how we want, bring the game to them. We have a very strong panel this year, we're improving all the time. It's great to be back in a Final even if it is "only the League", hopefully we'll have big support on the 24th. Ciarraí abú" Read more: kerrygaa.proboards.com/thread/6554/kerry-dublin-final-24th-april#ixzz4IoT3o0bwFine to a point, but Kerry did exceptionally well, far exceeding pre-match expectations, to hold onto the shirt tails of a superior Dublin team than themselves. Fully agree however than Dublin are beatable. Mayo will have a serious cut at beating them in three weeks time and I wouldn't rule that out.

I watched the game over again last night and got a new perspective I recommend all posters to do same I can find plenty reasons why we lost, missed kicks ,lack of intensity in early second half, loosing ball while over carrying ,some sideline errors, quality kicking by the opposition etc. But watch it again and your blood will boil at the ref calls against us many where the commentators admit they did not see what they were For? Dublin got almost Double the amount of frees We got 13 frees Dublin got 22 according to stats. 4 ground balls call s against us where no hand appeared to touch the ball on ground and Kerry players were being fouled simultaneously Those all went against us right away instead of play on or a free to Kerry all four were frees to Dublin ! The two jump or throw in s were clearly practiced by Dublin and were both clear fouls by Dublin right in front of referee Neither one was called. The first one where Fintan wrestled Donaghy to ground while tying up his hands and the second where Fintan swooped in from outside the throw and took the ball before any of the designated jumpers had touched it . Cameras clearly showed a holding foul on Donaghy by Mcmahon That would have been a 14 yard tap over if given . Believe me there was more than one holding foul on Dobaghy but the cameras proved that one on delayed replay Our players were well drilled at shutting their mouth and not complaining to the ref but Mc Menamen shouted and roared and got the ref to overrule the Umpire EF was class in the post game interview after He was angry same as Moran and Donaghy were With mystified looks on their faces with some of thei calls but did not complain . We are complicit by our Silence and yes that's the Kerry way shut up and take your beating like our previous generations used to do And look where that got us Don't let the Quality of the Dublin scores or the Brilliant excitement of the game mask the injustices carried out on Sunday. To win a team needs to be 5 or 6 points better not 1 or two Just watch the game again closely and get a neutral To judge the calls Snd the non calls its shocking But you'll feel better about your team you'll feel better about your manager heroes all in the face of adversity big time winners more than ever now in my eyes. Also look at John McCarthy on camera clearly punch Donnacha and then kick him and while doing so spew some hatred into his face all at the same time to one of our quietest players . Where's the CCC for that ?

After the last 10 minutes of the first half last Sunday, Mayo tactics are decided for them - they have no choice but to push up on the kick outs. I believe if they do it properly Dublin will struggle to get runs going.

Still struggling to come to terms with this one. Don't know whether knowing you are getting beaten with 10 mins to go like the league final is easier to digest than coming so close but coming up short. Before I go into anything or own team, I know it has been said at length already but this is an absolutely superb Dublin team. If I was a neutral on Sunday then witnessing some of their scores Sunday would have been a joy to behold. As it was, being a Kerry man every point was like a dagger to the heart. As much as they are fit, powerful & fast they quality of their footballers are up there with the best I have ever seen. For us, to score 2-14 in an All Ireland Semi but still come up short despite not conceding any goals is gut wrenching. We were the ones making sloppy mistakes when the chips were down while Dublin were calmness personified when pressure was on. The shoe was very much on the other foot a few short years ago when you could bank on the likes of Dublin / Cork wobbling when Kerry got a foothold in games. It looked to me like Kelly was trying to get the game restarted quickly than we have done in the past but there just wasn't the options. Too often then when he went long we were second to the breaking ball! This put us under pressure consistently at our own restarts and I think was the winning of the game. People talk about the Dublin backs being formidable but they didn't have a good day, we had far less of the ball in their end yet took 2-14. If we could won more primary possession. The ref made some shocking calls, the 45s fiasco, the late frees for non existent offences against Murphy & Young and the aformentioned assault on Crowley but we have to accept that Dublin were and are better than us currently. In 3 of our 4 reversals against them we have held the advantage going past the hour mark and didn't close out the game. Fitness in my mind doesn't come down to it, there was a slight bit of composure lacking - a sub conscious fear when we switched off in the last 10 or so mins in 2011 after going 4 up and were caught by Dublin in a way we werent caught before. In 2013 we had them on the ropes at half time and again led going into the latter stages but made bad calls on the ball, unforced errors and poor shot selection. We had it again Sunday with Moran/Sheehan/Gooch all kicking away wildly or short. Then we had errors by JOD, O'Brien & Moran again in possession uncharacteristically giving it away or running into trouble. This is in game management in the players own heads that they need to get right and there is no point in Eamonn Fitz being made a scapegoat. For me, he has to stay on. Their is great talent coming through and if Jack is the alternative then there is no comparison when it comes to the tactics side of the game. What Eamonn has managed to get out of the current group, finding more for an extra 3 yrs out of the old guard who were thought gone in 2013, bringing the likes of Geaney / O'Donoghue / Crowley / Murphy / Moran but to name a few onto a new level. He deserves faith in the same way Micko deserved faith after a couple of reversals against Dublin in the 70s. Also he has worked with a lot of the underage guys at schools so will be able to get the most out of them again. Personally, I would like him to stay on for the foreseeable future. Nobody else would have been able to get this level of consistent performance out this Kerry team in recent times, the only day you could say we werent correctly in order was the final last yr. Finally, at the game with my Fiancé I was subjected to the good and bad of "Da Boys in Blue", 2 old lads who made it their business to turn around and roar into our faces at full time and give the double fisted salute... if I wasn't with female company I would have decked him. Absolute vile cretin. Then another old lad beside us who was with his missus and saw what your man was at and said "Pay no attention to that sh!te", shook my hand and said great game. Couldn't agree more Kot. Please EF stay put and steady the ship for us. Nucleus of a fine team there with a few younger fellas busting a gut to impress.

I believe if they do it properly Dublin will struggle to get runs going. One thing that should be remembered about the pushing up was that Kerry were only able to do it after taking a free or when there was a delay (after both goals). As such they never got a chance to put it into action after half time as we only got one point from a free after ht (and only 4 in total).

A few thoughts. Absorbing, enthralling and very very physical. Possibly the most physical game I have ever witnessed.
The first 20 mins reminded me of Dublin v Donegal in QF, with us gently stretching out a lead. All serenity and calmness. Then it just exploded in our faces. Actually don't have a real issue with Cluxton on the kickout for the first goal, the precision of his deliveries and the tightness of the percentages make it inevitable that a few will go awry. And Kerry pounced, lovely touch by Walsh in there too. But what did bother me was Cluxton reaction, hoofing the next one over the line and another two long when he had options to go short. In summary he panicked for those 5 minutes, costing us another goal and a point. Thats was where the real damage was done. A one point deficit is more manageable than 5. At half time I wasn't confident, could not honestly tell you the last time Kerry were up by 5 at HT and then lost the game. But I was hopeful, our boys have learned not to do collective panic, very obvious since 2014 semi.
Then the gap was down to 2 in the blink of an eye, and its game on now. Was pessimistic when Kerry stretched it out to 3 by 62 mins, and actually thought that we looked the tired team. But again that word composure, refusal to panic. Anyone remember last 5 mins of Kerry v Dublin in 2007, when Kerry had that composure to hold onto the ball. Gooch the orchestrator. Well thats what Dublin were like in those dying minutes. Huge turnovers on JOD and Crowley too.
Incredible scores from Maccer, O'Gara and Connolly to close the deal.
A word on Connolly, missed 2 efforts prior to that, but still wanted the ball, still trusted himself. Most others would have shied away from it. A characteristic of greatness?
Actually thought Gough was fair enough, watched it yesterday again and he is fussy but he was fussy for both. You'd need eyes in the back of your head to referee these games. Agree on the Crowley one, definite free. Then again, he missed O'Mahony on Philly, also a free for same type of offence.
For us Philly, Cooper and McCarthy were heroes, McCarthy with no game time since the Leinster final. Maccer was tremendous, some improvement in his left footed point taking this year. Connolly was Connolly. Kilkenny well marshalled by Murphy, Bernard quiet but still tagged on a couple. Rock was solid as, well, a rock from frees. Flynner will be looking over his shoulder now. I'd find a place for Andrews somewhere.
For Kerry, very impressed with Geaney, economical and accurate. Moran played like he had a point to prove and he did. Darran O'Sullivan injury hurt ye too, plays well against Dublin. Crowley strikes me as wanting to be a bit of a he man. He doesn't always have to go after the big hit. O'Brien was a threat when he came on, although he took about 11 million steps for his fisted point. Don't think thats got a mention yet!
Would love to know what Mayo are thinking. Canavan was on Matt Cooper last night, he's dying for someone to beat Dublin. "Mayo only have to play brilliantly once" is what he said. After 60 mins on Sunday I remember thinking that whoever gets out on the right side of this will bate Mayo up and down Croke Park, because they will be absolutely primed. O'Gara could have a priminent role too, he'll relish playing against the Mayo full back line...

Mayo should be thinking of insisting on a Munster or Ulster ref.
I recommend Conor Lane of Cork.
Definitely not Gough, Coldrick or McQuillian.

2011 & 13 the dubs stole it, 2015 ye did'nt perform and 2016 its a refereeing conspiracy. Ye have got more than ye're fair share of dodgy call down the years and now ye can't handle it when the wheel turns. No complaints in 2014 when AOM cynically blackguarded Michael Murphy for 70 mins, in 2009 when Nick Murphy suffered a pre-planned assault after the throw or 2015 for JOD's penalty dive in Killarney. Kevin mac's hit on crowley was illegal, but was a fractionally mistimed attempt at a fair blindside shoulder. O Mahony's hit on Philly mc was a deliberate act of thuggery. A tolerance for cynical thuggery has become embedded in Kerry over the past 7 or 8 years and is almost celebrated at times. The behaviour of the Kerry supporters towards the ref stems from this. I'm always delighted when I see a ref from county with a tradition of provincial or AI success reffing Kerry games rather than idiots like Deegan (Laois) and Duffy (Sligo) who are starstruck by the green and gold jersey. Pat Mc Eaneny, Coldrick and Gough all the way.

Wow .. Dublin & Kerry take a bow ... that was just fantastic .. for a neutral anyway! What a game.. Fair play to Kerry for your endeavors but what can you say about Dublin .. just fantastic.. a few points:- 1/ P Geany was surely injured otherwise why would he have been taken off ... surely he wasnt just taken off to be replaced by a back (even if it was M O'Se) 2/ I could understand taking Sheehan on if you're free's weren't going well but Cooper was doing really well on them all day wasnt he? ... 3/Kerry needed JOD & Cooper at their very best on Sunday and although both showed glimpses of their ability, they werent consistent enough .. esp JOD ... you need him back firing on all cylinders next year if you want to beat the Dubs.. 4/ The way Dublin reigned in the 5 point lead after half time was immense... only a team completely at peace with itself and 100% confident could do that "and" go from 2 behind to 2 in front in the last few minutes of the game.... you just knew it was going to happen !! 5/ I think the Crowley incident should definitely have been a free in for Kerry but I really dont think it would have changed the end result .. Dublin just looked as if they could/would do whatever had to be done to win that game. 6/ Dublin are without doubt the fittest and strongest team Ive ever seen.. with class all over the place as well. Conclusion --- Poor aul Mayo edit - Saying that, Mayo will be happier facing the Dubs than Kerry ... they dont seem to "fill the togs" so much with the Dubs..

In 2011 Dublin had more in the tank for the final 10 minutes than Kerry, in 2013 finished stronger, 2015 absolutely murdered us and on Sunday they were fitter, more composed and simply better than us when it came to the crunch. There is no shame in that from a Kerry point of view. As someone else said 4 years ago we were supposedly in transition and we have been at the top end of the championship every year.
I find it a bit ridiculous that we are blaming the referee once more a la 2011. Yes of course it was a foul on Crowley but no way was it a gimme point for sheehan in the circumstances. Serious pressure kick on a player lacking in form and confidence. And if he had pointed it there is every chance that Dublin would have found a winner anyway. We were beaten, fair and square. Suck it up.

I posted yesterday unsure about whether it's wise to keep on EF if he does want to stay on, however after reflecting I do hope he stays on. I still have concerns he may be somewhat too conservative but we nearly pulled it off with so many lads over 30 and only 20 mins from JOD who I assume was injured or not in form. Next year with some of the U21s playing in the league hopefully some can progress sooner than expected but perhaps with more pace and youth coming through EF can get a little more expansive again with the play. I certainly don't see any obvious alternatives to come in just now. I think he can have another good crack at the Dubs again next year, who will still be the team to beat regardless of the outcome in the final.

With all the talk of our aged warriors I looked again at the program and here is the breakdown. Match Day Squad 30 and over this year - Dublin 7, Kerry 8 (Kerry oldest was 2 from 1980, Dublin 2 from 1981) Panel 25 - 30 (87-91) - Dublin 10, Kerry 13. Panel 25 and under - Dublin 8, Kerry 5 Several of the key Dublin squad are coming to the end as much as Kerry

To win the AI you need a good team and the Gods to favour you - this year the Gods are looking elsewhere and the close calls went against us. That said I think our problems happened earlier this season with injuries curtailing the preparation of too many of our big players. No doom and gloom and no need for radical changes - we need an injection of youth and self belief. The thing I least liked from Sunday was the way we withdrew and defended - for me the best form of defense is attack and I hate to see Kerry retreating from this.

O Mahony lines him up and follows through with thuggish cheap-shot shoulder to the chest.

I'm going to defend Gough. No ref is going to get everything right, particularly over a a series of split second events. As for the Kev Mac hit, let's take the opinion of two other 'partial observers' and put this to bed. Refs are only human after all. At 4 mins 30 sec if you will.

I, at first thought this was a fair shoulder to shoulder charge but having seen it again it was a frontal charge, perhaps not intentional but a foul nonetheless. This would have given Kerry a free in and a certain point as it was in a handy position. Game all square at that stage.... Instead, Dublin go straight down the pitch and score.... someone commented above about how many steps O'Brien took to fist his point. Reality is that he was being fouled all the way and refs will always leave that go. How many did MacMenamon take in 2011 to score the goal? 10... Watch it back and count.... Joe McQ wasn't going to overrule that though with the hill hopping and blue fever hitting climax..... We need stronger refs with no ties to the counties that are competing.

WUM

I'm going to defend Gough. No ref is going to get everything right, particularly over a a series of split second events. As for the Kev Mac hit, let's take the opinion of two other 'partial observers' and put this to bed. Refs are only human after all. At 4 mins 30 sec if you will. Yes, Gary and Ambrose are always 100% correct in every observation they make when commentating on a game. I doubt that since they're only human. However, some posters have questioned the impartiality of Gough because he works in Dublin and/or is from Leinster. What are the odds? Now if the ref had been a radio commentator from Kerry... but that's another story.

A question for the Dubs lads on here...
How would you feel if you had lost by 2, with a ref from Cork working in Killarney or Tralee? And the above decisions had gone the other way?
No doubt Dublin are a class bunch of footballers, all we are looking for is a fair roll of the dice......

Mcquillan is from ulster. He reffed Dublin v Mayo in 2012. We've been on both ends of his decision making. Refs aren't robots.
