Now that it is olympics 24/7 here is on to get you thinking.
Name the All-Ireland senior medal winning Kerry player who was nominated to qualify for the olympics for Ireland but withdrew his name.

Very disappointing to see the virus that is the blanket defence swarm offensive game has seeped down to today's minor semi final between Galway and Donegal. It is a shocking spectacle and virtually unwatchable. What will it be like when this competition becomes an u17 competition? It is a high running energy demanding game and it is very questionable if it best serves the development of 16 and 17 years going forward? Hard running versus high skill development in a more traditional type game of Gaelic football. Are the suits in Croker getting this right? I doubt it very much.

Will the U17 competition slot into the Minor schedule or is this age change a prelude to the B Championship slotting in as the curtain raiser for A Championship games in the future!!!!!

Very accurate piece from JMG. I tend to agree with him on the black card call. For me the lines, in this case, were blurred between blocking the run of a player and pulling a player deliberately to the ground from behind. The Mayo player fell forward after contact and a probable tangle to boot. Not a concise black card in my book and a huge error in judgement from McGoldrick, but should we be surprised under the current grey clouds the black card exists in. A seminal moment in a huge, once in a century game, till now, for a Tipp team in Croker and not good enough in my opinion from an official tasked with managing the game. The application of the black card has proved to be a shambles since its inception. Also agree re Mayo, the final is perfectly pitched on a plate for them to feast at the top table on All-Ireland day.

Problem is a black card can also be issues for a deliberate body check. Tom (Tommy) Carr seemed to think a black card was just for a deliberate pull down. Watching it in real-time I thought the Kiely ran across Doherty to take him down off the ball.

By way of having nothing much to do and being unable to think let alone write about recent events, I did a few sums and realised that last Sunday was the 50th time in the modern* era that I had gone to Croke Park to support a Kerry senior team.
(by modern I mean the era that began when Paidi took over in 1995).

I read in the Irish Times that Joe Barrett's medals are up for sale by auction this month. They would be a useful buy for the Museum when and if that ever comes to pass. The estimate is 30-40 thousand so some Kerry native with deep pockets would need to be at hand.

My understanding is that the GAA do not own the flats on Sackville Avenue. (Maybe our Dublin contributors can help on that score). If this is the case and they are willing to pump millions into "regenerating" the area, then its a bit of a smack in the face to the hundreds of clubs around the country who have to go cap in hand to the local community to get the tens of thousands together that are needed to add to the clubhouse, install new lights, out a new drainage system in the pitch and the likes. The club is going further and further down the food chain and eventually there will be a breaking point.

McStay will have to come out of hiding now down from the stands ..... I'm not sure what Harte is playing at. Why not see out his remaining year and then maybe request an extension? A change would be no harm for Tyrone.

No guarantees that McHale will get the gig as the deal was for the joint management package. I'm not a fan of joint management in general but this type of activity must be worrying for Roscommon supporters as stability should be essential in their bid to retain Div 1 status. This is the second year running that change is forced following a successful League and a disappointing Championship campaign.
Not sure what Mickey was up to looking for a second year other than to indicate that he has no intention of leaving anytime soon. Now that he has been refused he is in a classic no-win situation: stay and have to accept that the County Board is calling the shots about his future at the end of 2017; walk away and leave the project he has steered for so long. The CB probably felt it had no option but to assert its authority but it is hard to see anyone else bringing Tyrone success next season.

Tyrone have had none or little success for almost a decade now under Harte. Logan and Canavan must chomping at the bit. This is Harte's first public rebuke from Tyrone. It will be interesting to see how he responds. Hard to see Tyrone winning next years All-Ireland. Dublin, Kerry and Mayo are well ahead of them at the moment.

Not too sure if M Harte is to blame for us not winning an AI recently ... this past few years we've been lacking a couple of forwards with the consistency and composure to put the ball over the bar when it "really" counts .. .. the guys we have are simply not finishing the chances the rest of the team are making ... Whats the solution ? I guess the only real solution is to try and find the players who can finish ... I really dont see the point in going back to Croke Park next year with the exact same players "hoping" for a different result .. they've had plenty of chances.. However, I wouldn't be too happy with Micky over his continuous selection of Morgan to take our long range free's .. and the fact that we are STILL missing 70%+ of our free's ... surely this shouldn't be happening 4/5 years down the line Saying that, I dont think we're as far away as some would think ... We have some excellent players and if he could find 2 or 3 more we would be in with a shout

Its unlikely that Mickey Hartes achievement of taking a county from no All irelands to three will ever be matched. An extraordinary achievement even if he didnt give too fiddlers what state the game was in after he was finished.

An extraordinary achievement even if he didnt give too fiddlers what state the game was in after he was finished. A remarkable achievement. Unlike his neighbouring counties where getting a first ever was the pinnacle, he pushed on to get another two (both unfortunately at our expense) and more than that brought the expectation of success every year. That "success " has been elusive and even reaching a semi final two out of three years followed by a provincial title is deemed not good enough shows how far Tyrone have really come. Looks like they are turning into "animals", just like us!

That "success " has been elusive and even reaching a semi final two out of three years followed by a provincial title is deemed not good enough shows how far Tyrone have really come. Looks like they are turning into "animals", just like us! I think it probably has more to do with relations with the county board and the sponsors than the supporters. Heard that Mickey's relations with some of the county board are a long way from ideal. Also heard the sponsors aren't too pleased with the ongoing RTE boycott. I think this was a shot accross the bows from the county board to remind Mickey that there's more people beyond himself involved in Tyrone GAA. Longer-term I wouldn't be too shocked if in the heel of the hunt he did end up staying for 2 more years. I think Mickey wanted the 2 years because he knows that Tyrone are very unlikely to match the likely level of expectation around them next year.(Remember all the talk from folk about Tyrone being the team best equipped to give Dublin a game) Division 1 is a lot tougher than Division 2 and while Tyrone did go unbeaten for a long stretch, there were a lot of draws and narrow victories eked out in that run. For me the Tyrone team over the last while look a team who have got the most out of their panel of players and they just don't have enough of the top quality players to push on to be a serious challenger in terms of the top table. A lot of people seem to think that the U21 All-Ireland winning team will push Tyrone on to the top level but I think that looked like a side far more likely to provide a decent number of decent senior intercouty players as opposed to a small number of serious quality intercounty players . Also folk tend to overestimate how quickly lads out of U21 have an impact when it comes to senior. They are far more likely to have an impact 3/4 + years down the line as opposed to in year 1/2 after U21. This is not to say I'm writing Tyrone off by any means as I expect them to be quite capable of giving any of the top teams on their day a game, I just can't see them putting enough days in a row to bring home Sam. To put it another way if you were picking a combined team out of the Dubs and Tyrone how many Tyrone players would be on the starting 15?

Thats pretty much spot on re the TCB & Sponsers ... mind you there are a good few supporters who want him gone too but strangely enough this has "always" been the case .. Even in naughties there were constant calls from certain people & places yapping about this that & the other .. Im definitely in the "he can stay" camp .. he deserves it and the people up here yapping about him dont seem to acknowledge the fact that he doesnt have the finishers he once had .. he's not a magician !!

The club is going further and further down the food chain and eventually there will be a breaking point. I don't know, I think they bought those vacant buildings. I'm not sure you can look at business investment that way, presumably it brings things to the association that are hard to measure just in pure monetary terms. In that case why spend any money on having any big new stadiums, why have clubs building fancy clubhouses, why do anything with the money except put it all into players? There will always be a conflict between the business and the ideals of the assoc. Between expanding and losing touch wiht the roots. But think about this, do you ever recall anyone questioning the developments that happened around the Aviva stadium? Quite a few people live in very poor conditions still around Croker, anything that might help improve the area that has an 83,000 stadium on its doorstep and major events about 10 times a year is not unreasonable in my book. And I'd say the same about any other area around a big stadium that is used alot. I'd be more for questioning the need for pumping funds into big stadia that are then hardly ever filled. Is it realistic? I definitely think there should be more big games in Limerick, Killarney & even in Thurles, for example. Re-Mickey Harte, I think Tyrone could do with a change (though MH has brought in fresh people to his coaching team) but to lose Micky & then to lose Sean Cavanagh (as seems inevitable) at almost the same time, that would be a huge challenge. Ultimately it might be a good thing for the new generation though

Interesting to note the 'pleasantries' being exchanged between KK and Cork players while the teams were shaking hands prior to the Camogie Final yesterday. Haven;'t see that happening before.
