Surprisingly quiet on here today. Anyone at the matches in Killarney yesterday might be able to give us an eyewitness report? Couldn't make it myself because of work.
Not surprised that Dr. Crokes were beaten. I felt they were there for the taking the previous Sunday. Clearly Rathmore brought their A game and the knowledge that they can beat Crokes when the form takes them.
Kenmare look to be a rising District with all their underage talent coming to the fore. 2 interesting semi's in prospect.

West Kerry led 9-8 at half time and looked the most likely winner at half time. They were motoring well in the 1st half and found scoring a lot easier than Kenmare. Kenmares build up play was slow and laboured and they had to work very hard for each score (Paul O’Connor was the only forward showing anything for them). The West Kerry forward line was buzzing and had some great scores particularly Eanna O’Conchuir (their half forward scored 2 or 3 glorious points). Their corner forwards (Jason Hickson & James Crean) were buzzing as well and linked up well for some scores. They took off James Crean at half time, if he wasn’t injured it was a mystifying decision. Early enough in the 2nd half Jason Hickson was lucky to not be sent off for striking and the West Kerry sideline took him off immediately after that. Eanna O’Conchuir drifted out of the game after a very impressive 1st half. After all of the above their forward line looked very disjointed and didn’t look a scoring threat at all.
Kenmare brought on one of the Crowleys at wing back and he added to them greatly. Adrian Spillane had a great game at midfield and they had all the impetuous in the 2nd half. They scored some nice points in the 2nd half, with Paul O’Connor doing most of the damage. West Kerry didn’t raise a gallop at all in the 2nd half and only scored 2 points. Kenmare ran out convincing winners in the end. Paul O’Connor man of the match but was lucky to not be sent off in the 1st half for a late challenge. The ref was very lenient with physical challenges but quite finicky at times with other rules and had a poor grasp of the advantage situation.
Stephen O’Brien played centre forward and was well marshalled by Gavin O’Connor, although he did score a vital point which killed of West Kerry. Killian Spillane (who was quiet) played corner forward but drifted out the field a lot and was picked up by Brian Begley. Begley had a good game and was very good at carrying the ball up to half the length of the field. Teddy Doyle was selected at full forward but played out the field and he was marked by Marc O’Se. This seemed to suit O’Se (who looked to be showing no sign of injury and was moving well) who was influential out the field in the 1st half and scored a good long range point as well. They moved O’Se to the full back line during the 2nd half to pick up Paul O’Connor. Teddy Doyle came into the game after this change as well. Alan Fitzgerald played mid field for the whole game, he had an alright game.

Any video clips from any of the games lads? Was over at the rugby the weekend - I think personally it will be a Kenmare versus Legion final but wouldn't be surprised if Rathmore ended up in it either - that semi final next weekend is a really hard one to call.

Rathmore or Legion will be exempt from relegation round robin by virtue of they reaching the final- that will then leave 8 teams with 3 to be relegated to intermediate status. Its still ludicrous to be talking in terms of relegation for any of the remaining clubs; the likes of Ardfert & Laune Rangers did not set the world on fire but they were probably no worse than some divisional sides who can sit back and not worry knowing their status is secure. Some divisions take the championship seriously, some don't; all clubs prepare for the senior championship to the best of their ability. One of the reasons , other than apathy for lack of preparation by divisional sides is the focus by intermediate & junior clubs in winning the county title- this certainly inhibits preparation. A simple solution would have been to set aside a window early in the year, say mid April to end of May to conclude these championships, leaving divisional sides then to have a full squad to choose from; also premilinary rounds could be used to eliminate weaker sides and I would also dispense with the "back door" system- knock out games are best, extra time in the event of a draw- after all, this year's senior championship will have been run off in the space of 5 weeks!

Ardfert Laune Rangers St Michaels Foilmore Kilcummin Stacks Crokes Rahillys Milltown Rathmore or Legion
Go into 3 groups of 3 with the bottom of each group being relegated to Intermediate. Will there be 'hot balls' for the draw to prevent 3 of the big guns drawing each other?

It's surprising alright how quiet it is on the forum considering we are at the semi final stage now. Maybe it is because the perceived big guns are gone out. Looking to this weekend I think Legion will have too much for Rathmore. While Rathmore have knocked out the favourites and have beaten Legion in East Kerry championship final last year, I think to loss all year of their best forwards will cost them up front. Mark Reen has been missing with a torn hamstring all year and Shane Ryan has only featured in a few games with a knee tendon injury. On top of that John Moynihan has been injured and so has George o keeffe who only came on as a sub last Sunday. rathmore certainly won't be fearing legion as they have the back line to cope with James and co but will there forwards be able to do enough damage to get over the line. On another note it's a disgrace that even the senior county championship winners, if it's a club that wins might still get relegated from county champ, not fair at all on club teams Yeah I could see Rathmore's defence holding Legion a bit better than Kerins O'Rahillys but the injuries to the forwards is a big worry for Rathmore - If Rathmore had Reen, Ryan, Moynihan and O'Keeffe all fully fit they would have far more in the way of an attacking threat. Moynihan definitely didn't look fit the last day and I was actually surprised he stayed on the pitch so long. Both sides will surely be massively up for this game. In the other semi I wonder if the intermediate (St Marys) and junior (Templenoe) championship will be a help or a hindrance? South Kerry looked anything but impressive in the win against Kilcummin . It's tough to know what Kenmare will be like in a tight competitive game - not exactly much in the way of pedigree as a divisional side - there is some talent there especially in the forwards but could easily see a situation where they struggle to get enough ball to them.

Will there be 'hot balls' for the draw to prevent 3 of the big guns drawing each other? Are Dingle definitely exempt? - was thinking it would be a bit mad that Dingle could be going forward to represent Kerry in the Munster Senior Championship while at the same time being in a play-off to avoid being relegated to Intermediate. Also with 3 teams I could easily see a situation where 3 teams end up on equal points (if all 3 teams win 1 game and lose 1 game) so I dug out the link to the official guide to double-check the current rules. Looking at them, it seems to me that if two teams end up on the same points (which would happen if team A and B both lost to team C and drew with each other for example) the result from the last time they played each other in the County Championship would determine who gets relegated.

Crokes and Dingle are exempt because before the Senior Club Competition started it was stated that the two Finalists cannot be relegated. One of Legion or Rathmore are exempt because they will be in the County Final. Grey area around what would happen if two club teams made it to the final but that can't happen now, the winner of the semi final will be safe, the loser will go to the relegation play-offs
So of the 11 Senior Senior Clubs, 3 are safe. That leaves 8 Senior Clubs with 3 to be relegated to Intermediate via the Play-offs
Some rumours that both Ardfert and St Michaels Foilmore may voluntarily drop down to Intermediate leaving only one from eight.
If the Winners of the County Final are Legion or Rathmore they will represent Kerry in the Munster Club Championship. If South Kerry or Kenmare District win then it will be Dingle who represent Kerry on 15th Nov vs the Cork or Waterford champions

I presume if both go the plan will be 6 other clubs put in a draw and the first 3 picked out are in the play-off? If it's 7 left then 6 will be drawn out into 2 groups. If it's 8 left then you can have 2 groups of 3 and one play-off group of 2. County Board should really clarify all this asap and set deadlines on when the clubs possibly considering voluntarily dropping down so everything can get sorted for the players in terms of fixtures and the like. Is anything from stopping them from making the draw right now ? - just have one of the balls marked as loser of the Rathmore Legion game if they aren't exempt.

New method now to determine who goes to Intermediate. 8 teams, 4 v4 with winners exempt; 4 teams left, 2 v 2; losers relegated, winners play each other with loser of this game also to be relegated. Any team that wishes to voluntarily regrade have until 20th Oct to notify board. First 4 games to be played week end of 7/8th Nov, neutral venues, extra time in the event of a draw after normal time.

I heard Ardfert and Foilmore want to go as well - don't know how true that is. If that was the case you would have 1 team going down from 6 -
Legion / Rathmore Milltown Castlemaine Kilcummin Laune Rangers Austin Stacks Kerins O Rahillys
From that list you would think Milltown, Laune Rangers and Kilcummin most in danger.
If you are left with the 8, then what greengold says makes sense. A lot will depend on the draw evidently!

I took a sabbatical for awhile after such a poor showing from us the weekend, it was blatantly coming though the signs were there for a few weeks. Well done to Rathmore they were by far the better team and missing some key players too, I now fear for us as a team we have gone back a good bit and teams don't fear playing us anymore. There used be a time where we could manufacture goals out of nothing, now we are struggling to create anything. Does anybody know if Mark Reen or Shane Ryan are anywhere close to fitness? They are big losses and Rathmore would fancy their chances against any of the sides left if they had a full team. However,I think Legion will win it I can't see anyone dealing with the double threat of Conor Keane and James, James is phenomenal and unstoppable when in the form of the last day.

I think Mark Reen is still a few weeks away from being back as he has had a recurring hamstring strain the last couple of years. Shane Ryan I think featured against Shannon rangers, missed the chokes but I don't think he is 100 fit cruel Freudian slip! (a freudian slip is when you say one thing but actually mean a mother)

Can't see Legion losing to Rathmore this weekend to be honest. The breathtaking form of Conor Keane and James O' Donoghue lately and the absences of Mark Reen & Shane Ryan should be enough to swing it in their favour by 2-5 points.

I presume the draw for the relegation fixtures will take place pretty quickly after Sunday's game given they need to know the loser to include in the draw - from what I have heard they have pencilled in first or second weekend in November for those fixtures.

Rathmore have more experience and better balanced outfit.Need to break even midfield and limit James O Donoghue influence. Start Tom Sullivan on James and leave Paul Murphy on forty as he is vital link player and their best operator. If George O Keeffe is fit to start you have a serious half forward line.Shane Ryan and Mark Reen serious losses and bench impact is weakened. I hope Rathmore do not change game plan and play Paul Murphy on James from start.

In my opinion Conor is ready to step up for Kerry or at least be given a decent shot at doing so. The man in my opinion has been arguably one of the top 5 club forwards this year to date and therefore deserves a shot in next years McGrath Cup/League to see what he can do with a little more pressure is on him and the standard of play is of a higher level. I personally think he has the potential to be future Kerry footballer.

Legion 1-12 Rathmore 1-9.
Wheesie delighted. He said he feels Aiden was hard done by with the red card at the end as the previous tackle on him that left him "postate" on the ground wasn't dealt with. He said that the duel between JOD and Paul Murphy was brilliant and that only for Bryan Kelly in goal Legion would have been beaten.

I don't agree with his notion that O Mahonys red was harsh it was deserved according to rule book. He is right that Kelly made a few tremendous saves including a penalty from Eoin Lawlor and Kelly and Conor Keane were the difference today...Conor stood up when he was needed most when the game was really in the melting pot and that's a sign of a very good player. Potentially Conor certainly has the capabilities to play for Kerry so hopefully he can go on and produce the goods, I would be optimistic about him but he may not play many league games because I am almost sure he has one more year u21.
One issue that may be Legions downfall is the lack of a bench. Saying that this 2 week break is a blessing for them and they may have been fortunate drawing Rathmore instead of South Kerry because they now have a nice recovery period which is crucial for a team with limited options from the bench. I think they will go on to win it now regardless of the outcome of the other semi final, Jamie O Sullivan was a big addition for them this year and with Podge Connor, Jonathan Lyne, James and Conor Keane they have the backbone of a very good side.

Agree on the red card for Aidan - he'll be lucky if its only one game he misses next year too. The neutral will have felt sorry for him though, when the game was slipping away from Rathmore you could see that his injury just wouldn't allow him to stop the rot. Kellys penalty save was the match winner, Legion were really struggling at this stage and the 9 point deficit would have been too much for them to make up. I was impressed with Jamie O Sullivan for Legion and Donal O Sullivan for Rathmore. Conor Keane is a better player than 2 or 3 of the forwards who were in and around the Kerry senior panel this year, if he has the necessary application he should be an option for Kerry next summer.

If south Kerry can latch onto and harness what St. Marys have done in winning the Intermediate championship they will be hard to beat. If they over come Kenmare District they will be very dangerous in a county final. Another win in this competition would focus wavelengths down south.

According to Weeshie this is Legion's first appearance in a County Final since 1946 - that will be some occassion for the club. Rathmore were attempting to make their first final ever (if I heard him right). The result yesterday also gives a little clarity on the club playoff for to see who retains senior championship status for 2016 - 8 clubs playing off for 5 places. Any further clarity on the talk of some clubs opting out?

Legion 1-12 Rathmore 1-9 HT 0-6 1-5
You would scarcely give a penny candle for Legion's chances for most of the first half and indeed for long stretches of the second half. Rathmore were the dominant team, playing aggressively at pace. They had raced into a a four or five point lead early in that opening half, playing all the positive football. The goal came from wing foward Daniel O'Sullivan and inside in the corners they had two diminutive men in Eoin Lawlor and Dean Fitzgerald who were troublesome all through. Eoin scored two points and Dean notched one. During their dominant first half Rathmore also missed a penalty, Brian Kelly saving well. Had that gone in it would have been time to pull the curtains. At the other end , JO'D was being afforded the respect Strand Road did not give him with the result that the goals were not coming with the abandon of the previous week. Paul Murphy was on James but there was always somebody else in the vicinity whenever James won possession. Sensible defending surely. Yet James, who had the upper hand on Paul all through, and Conor Keane, to whom the referee could have been more generous, were posing a significant threat. Also. Tom Moriarty in the corner, although bested by the wily Tom O'Sullivan, was an industrious domestique. So, in spite of apparently being the much better team in the opening half, Rathmore had merely a two point lead at the break.
Scoring was at a premium for the first half of the second half and even though the Legion midfield was becoming dominant, especially Jamie O'Sullivan, too good for AO'M all through, the scores were not coming. With about fifteen minutes to go Rathmore had a four point lead and one felt that only something special could rescue Legion. Well, something special did happen. Appropriately and not surprisingly JO'D and Conor Keane were at the heart of the matter. James latched on to a ball about forty metres out and he simply sizzled through and when he was eventually confronted he, as my rugby brothers might say, off loaded to Conor. Conor doesn't do sizzling. Meandering is his game. He duly meandered past the opposition and planted it just inside the post. A class goal worthy of retrieving any lost cause.
A point in it now. Legion got a free. James took a short one, got the return and boomed the equaliser. Jonathan Lyne, became more conspicuous in the second half, scored a marvellous point from far out on the terrace side. There was no holding the town side now. They became rampant as the Rathmore boys faded.
As the game entered the twilight zone, there was a clash between AO'M and Shaun Keane in front of the stand. I was on the far terrace and therefore I am not in a position to comment if there was a victim/transgressor. Both men went down. Aiden rose to his feet eventually and trotted back towards his own goal. In spite of scoring two points, Aiden was clearly hampered by a leg injury. Either way, Jamie O'Sulivan had the better of that duel. In any case, when AO'M reached the Rathmore goal area he clearly punched a Legion player in the face, Jamie O'Sullivan perhaps. A red card was brandished and there is question about its validity.
A game which looked to be Rathmore's to claim was snatched from them by a moment of magic. That moment of magic made my decision to forego the rugby match worthwhile. I watched a recording of the rugby match later. There were moments of magic in that match too but sadly they were provided by the wrong team. Hyperbole is a dangerous commodity.

good game yesterday, never sure which way it was gonna go until the last few minutes, JOD and lyne really showed their class in the last 20 minutes and conor keane was outstanding showing great maturity and intelligence on the ball in the final stages, both midfielders had big games also. legion gonna be very tough to beat in the final. havent seen much of south kerry or kenmare in recent years, would like to see kenmare reach a final, there forwards must be a handful with stephen o brien and the templenoe lads.

I wouldn't attempt to match veteran's account of this game but one thing struck me in the 1st half when Rathmore were the dominant force. They seemed to me to be slow and a little ponderous in working the ball out of their own defence, thus slowing down and limiting the number of attacks when they were clearly on top. A little more urgency might have given them more attacking options and thus a few mores scores on the board, even without the penalty.
In the 2nd half Legion looked to have gained confidence the longer they were still in the game while Rathmore struggled to score in that 2nd half hour.
Padraig Lucey Legion's no 30, a giant of a man by any standards, came on and certainly made a difference. He alternated between midfield and the full forward berth. Did he go to Australia at some stage or am I thinking of another player? If it's him, is he back for good or what is the story?
Tom O'Sullivan's white boots were quite the sartorial highlight of the day.
On another point though, Rathmore fielded in their defence 3 men who have played senior football for Kerry, each has won at least one All Ireland, one All Star and has been awarded Man of the Match in an All Ireland senior final. Is this a record for a Club?

One thing that sticks out is the strength of GAA in Killarney at present. Crokes a super club in football and contested the last two intermediate hurling finals, Legion in the senior final and Spa losing the intermediate final with some fine young players. re who will the championship out, Kenmare have some super skilful and young players. A forward line that has Teddy Doyle, Stephen O'Brien, Paul O'Connor, Killian Spillane has a lot going for it
