Player can be in small square if pass comes from open play - square infringement only if pass comes from a free or sideline ball.

And if the receiving player starts outside the small square as the pass is being made. Actually a good example of putting a ref in an impossible situation - play coming from right side of goal and Donaghy pops up on left side of goal to finish move. Practically everybody following the play and therefore no idea of where Donaghy starts from - how can any ref be expected to follow that. Umpires watching posts ....

That would be something to try for next years League 2 refs. One in each side of the Field. One ref is not enough anymore. Most of them are too far away to make the right call anyway and with the pace of the game now they are too slow to keep up with it. Not all of them but most of them. The game is getting faster now and it needs 2 refs in my opinion. They are always trying to change the Rules for the players and the Game. Why not try it with the Refs too for the League anyway it wouldn't hurt.

I expect O'Rahillys to beat Legion. They have some nice players Gary Kissane is a solid Keeper. Giles O’Grady,Cormac Coffey,Cian Sayers, good backs. Tommy Walsh and David Moran is a good midfield. BJ Keane, Jack Savage, and Con Barrett up front. They have a decent bench too with Gavin Duffy, Gavin O'Brien and Declan Quill to bring on. They will be tough for any team left to beat them. I would go for South kerry and Kenmare in the other games. Crokes always find it hard to beat Rathmore so that will be close.

If south Kerry were to lose to kikcummin I think it would be a shock,, but in the other 3 games it is hard enough to predict the outcome, I would go for south Kerry rahillys, crokes and kenmare to contest the semi final, the sight of a crokes Jersey will hold no fear for rathmore could be a cracker of a game.

If theres a shock this weekend it could be Kilcummin to beat South Kerry. Cant look past Crokes against Rathmore. Toss of a coin between Rahillys and Legion - think Rahillys might just do it. And another close call between West Kerry and Kenmare - plenty of pacey forwards on both sides, Kenmare just about.

Kilcummin nearly did it. South Kerry showed alot of character in that 2nd half and just about deserved it. Sheehan sent off and Killian off with whatl looks like a concussion. But they dug it out. Declan did well from the bench. Some player to bring on with 20 mins to go.

Kilcummin v South Kerry
South Kerry faced a Kilcummin side full of work ethic. In a low scoring game Kilcummin relied on full forward Kevin McCarthy who had Killian Young in all sorts of trouble.South Kerry kept in touch with Sheehan frees and two nice scores from Aidan Walsh at wing forward. But a McCarthy goal and a Kealy free gave Kilcummin a deserved lead at HT.
Tit for tat in the second half & the East Kerry men looked like running out winners when Bryan Sheehan was sent off for two yellows & losing Killian Young to a heavy knock,But South Kerry played their trump card & Declan O Sullivan came on and roamed around the 40 kicking the equaliser. Before himself and MOTM Brendan O Sullivan grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck to kick the last 3points of the game to close the game. Eamonn Fitzmaurice will definitely have the names of Brendan O Sullivan & Brian Sugrue in his note pad going home.O Sullivan gave a tour de force in the middle and kicked 3/4 points from play,Sugrue for the second week in a row was the best defender on show,A lovely tight marking corner back with bundles of pace.
KOR v Legion
Barry O Shea will have nightmares about James O Donoghue for the next few nights,He was truly unmark able in the 1st half,Conor Keane on the 40 gave an exhibition of kick passing supplying the assassin on numerous occasions,The first after 10 seconds which brought out a super save from Kissane in the Strand Rd goal.I would imagine his hatrick will show up on YouTube in the coming hours & his assist for Keanes goal was a joy to see.KOR fans will wonder why they didn't persist with Tommy Walsh at Full Forward who won everything that went near him & continued in that vain when he went to midfield.Barry John was good at centre forward & Cormac Coffey did well on Donoghue in the 2nd half. David Moran was OK but I don't think the Tralee men ever settled into the game with the constant re-jigging of the defence trying to quieten James & the numerous changes at Full Forward,Tommy,David,Con Barrett and a 2 man full forward line was all tried throughout the game with Tommy the only one that worked both at the start of the game & the finish. The move of David McLoughlin back to sweeper in the second half removed a massive part of the Blue's engine. Legion do look like championship contenders Podge O Connor was a rock at corner back & Lyne had a good game on the wing & at centre back in the 2nd half.Jaime O Sullivan gives them a good platform at midfield he kicked 2 points today & the terrible twins up front will give any opposition worry. How they would love to meet the Crokes next? That's providing Aidan O Mahoney & Co. don't have a different script

Strand Rd bowed out gracefully and whilst they tried everything to combat James ultimately the injuries carried into the game by David & Barry John were their undoing; James was on fire as stated but once again Tommy Walsh reminded everybody of his talent - hope we see more of him next year.

The Legion team I saw yesterday bore little resemblance to the Legion team I saw stuttering and stumbling against an under strength Feale Rangers the previous week. They were full of intent from start to finish, playing some sublime football at times. It wasn't that Kerins O'Rahillys were overwhelmed. Indeed there were times when they looked as if they might win but they were undone by some juvenile defending. Juvenile defending should the last item on your menu when you have to contend with a glittering gem like JO'D.
Not for the first time, and the hope is that it will not be last time, the central figure in a match was the aforementioned stick of dynamite. Everytime he got the ball there were tremors in the Stadium and on three of those occasions there were tremors in the Strand Road net also, and with more luck that would have been five. The game had scarcely settled down when he cracked a bullet against the goalie who had the good fortune to be in the right place. Not long afterwards he shot from the left corner to the far corner. First net tremor. We did not to have to wait too long for the next net tremor. In the second half, even though now being escorted by two defenders, he danced between them in from the right corner and was duly upscuttled by a high tackle. The resulting penalty was immaculately converted, as always. Net tremor number three. Back to the first half. Another net tremor was experienced which was his in reality but will be in the records as belonging to Conor Keane. James scythed in form the right corner past a succession hapless opponents, unleashed and the ball cannoned against somebody and the alert Conor stroked it home. James is a glittering gem alright!
However, it would be unfair to suggest that this was a one man show from Legion. They were very united and purposeful and got a maximal return from their more prominent players. Wisely, they played their ace where he is most lethal- in the full forward line. That ensured a maximal return from him. Further back, Podge O'Connor was tenacious as is his wont and Jonathan Lyne was far more noticeable than last Sunday, spending some time at CHB. Still, I feel they should extract more from Jonathan. A cornerstone of this team is their midfield partnership of Shaun Keane and Jameie O'Sullivan. Like last Sunday, they were eye catching. They are a formidable duo. JO'D may have shone brightest up front but Conor Keane on the forty was immense, majestic at times. He wriggled and weaved and tormented and sprayed kick passes and scored 1-2. And remember he is only a slip of a boy.
Their defending aside , there was a lot to admire about Kerins O'Rahillys and it should not be forgotten that they contributed to a hugely entertaining, open game of football. They scored sixteen times whereas Legion scored thirteen times. But of course the goals killed them. Concede four goals and your task becomes virtually impossible. Unlike Legion, I felt they did not deploy their resources as judiciously as they should. In particular, I have in mind Tommy Walsh. They started him at full forward where he looked as if he could cause havoc. Inexplicably, they moved him to midfield for most of the game before posting him inside again. He did make some soaring catches at midfield but I feel a full game for him inside may have been more productive, at least on the evidence of the early stages of the game. From a Kerry point of view, the news is positive. Yesterday he bore a far closer similarity to the Tommy Walsh of 2009 than the anaemic Tommy I have seen during the NFL etc. David Moran, scored a penalty, only played in patches, very often being slow to deliver that ball inside. Seemingly, he is cursed with some injury. BJK was lively enough on the forty but threatened more than he achieved. Like David, he is supposed to be plagued by an injury also. Jack Savage looked very good at times. He kicked two from play and about seven from frees, a lot of them not easy. Will need to get stronger.
I suppose it is an exaggeration to that, in the space of a week , Legion went from ugly duckling to swan. Well swan like anyway, if you get my drift. I saw enough from Strand Road yesterday to hint that they could be contenders next year. Of course, that suggestion is predicated on the assumption that their defence will be reinforced and made more street wise.
As far as I can recall the final score was 4-9 to 1-15.

Expected more from south Kerry and for me kilcumin probably should have won the game , on the evidence of yesterday's two quarter finals if they were to meet legion you would have to fancy the club team but they did beat dingle the week before so maybe they are better than yesterday's showing

South Kerry 0-14 Kilcummin 1-8
Kilcummin led at half time 1-6 to 0-7 and deservedly so. They were much superior to South Kerry in that half which was a fairly good game unlike the dregs we witnessed after the break. Kilcummin were sprightly and enterprising whereas South Kerry looked as if they were playing their first game together. Kilcummin's defence was fast and uncompromising with wing backs Philip Casey and Noel Duggan being particularly prominent, the former scoring 0-2. Their midfield was on top and in Kevin McCarthy they had a dangerous boyo who scored a great goal. He also got three points from frees.
The second half is best wiped from the memory. It degenerated into a spiteful, nasty affair. There were confrontations on and off the ball. When players adopt that attitude a game is impossible to referee and painful to watch. In any case, South Kerry's midfield began to exert the upper hand. Brendan O'Sullivan, the most consistent midfielder all through, was full of energy and scored three points. Bryan Sheehan , anonymous in the first half, steadily exerted a growing influence until he picked up a second yellow. Indeed, I lost count of the yellows and blacks. Significantly, South Kerry brought on Declan when the game seemed to be slipping form them in the second half. Those old legs are not what they once were but Alzheimer's disease has not set in yet. He won it and held it and probed and kicked a point and set up another one. Very likely, South Kerry would not have triumphed without his introduction, particularly when Bryan was sent off.
Aiden Walsh was an impressive wing forward for South Kerry kicking three points. Bryan kicked four from frees. I was expecting more from Denis Daly and Paul O'Donoghue. Only a transformed South Kerry team will make an impact in the semifinal.
Kilcummin surprised me. I did not expect them to be as good and indeed on reflection they will wonder how they did not get over the line. Brendan Kealy was untested and came outfield to kick two long range points from frees. Kieran Murphy was good at midfield but seemed to get involved in a lot of niggles. Kevin Gorman also did his bit there and inside, as already stated, Kevin McCarthy was the one who threatened most.
The most significant aspect of this forgettable match was the injury to Killian Young. He was stretchered off in the second half. I hope all is well with Killian.
I will give Killarney a miss today. Two days in a row is too much for creaking bones.

Thanks for all the match reports. Its a lot of effort to sit down write a match report. I marvel sometimes at the ability to recall who did what in a game without the benefit of watching a recording of a game.
Great to see small clubs like Kilcummin doing so well. They should limit the number of subs that Divisional sides can introduce to three. It would go someway to even things us for small ambitious clubs against Divisional sides who have a much bigger pick.
I wonder if Strand Road played Tommy Walsh at fullback would they have conceded four goals?

Not the usual bereft feeling after Strand Road are beaten in the Championship. I thought nearly all of our guys played well, and we have a lot of quality. We're short a full back of real presence and toughness but I don't think that's a surprise to anyone. I was also delighted with the attitude we showed, they fought on their backs to stay in touch right to the end and that was fantastic to see.
Legion are a right good team, and James was at the top of his game yesterday. That being said, our tactical approach was suicidal. If we had started with Coffey and a sweeper on him instead of leaving Brosnan on his own with half of Fitzgerald Stadium in front of them until James had made two and missed one I think we probably would have won.
I also thought it was a big mistake bringing Tommy out to midfield as we were doing well there. Con Barrett's runs with the ball from deep caused Legion a lot of problems but he was prevented from doing it by being put inside. Tommy had them under huge pressure in their full back line too and I seriously doubt we would have finished with one goal if he'd been inside throughout.
All in all a disappointing end to a year that didn't turn out too badly, but an opportunity missed I think.

Word in Strand Rd on David & BJ was that both were struggling with injuries , David a bulging disc, BJ an ankle problem- neither was able to train last week which might explain the rotation of Tommy Walsh from full forward to midfield during the game. Games are decided on tight margins and I wonder what would the outcome have been if the linesman on the stand side flagged James O'D prior to the 2nd goal? It was a tight call, James definitely over the line, the ball may or may not have been but there was no flag and Conor Keane finished to the net. As "Keane" said, it was probably a missed opportunity for the Tralee side when one considers the second half score was 1-5 to 0-7 in favour of Legion and despite the concession of 3 first half goals they only trailed by 2 @ the interval. I did not have a clear view of the Legion penalty but those close to the action considered it a dubious award. The joys of sport!

I'd imagine the referee felt it was a penalty considering he missed a stonewall penalty earlier in the half on legions number 12.Cracking game of football, pity there had to be a loser.
