Big test for Kerry. After Kerry winning against Derry and losing against Mayo, but Dublin winning against Donegal and losing against Cork it will be a game where we need to take the points. Dublin showed great character to overcome Donegal, but they did get overturned by Cork. However, Dublin have a brilliant squad and play excellent football. With another 3 weeks of training for the Kerry team I expect them to be even hungrier than they were in Derry yesterday. I'm not sure if Gooch will be back for this as it would be the 1st of March, and his return was foreseen for March, but with Donnchadh Walsh and Killian Young back as well as Tommy Walsh getting another 3 weeks of getting used to a round ball again I think we will be a very different outfit. Barry John has obviously made his intentions known to secure a starting spot in the Kerry and so has Paul Geaney and the competition for spots in the forwards is fierce. Much has been said about Dublin's strength in depth but when it comes to midfield and the forwards Kerry are probably in an even better position. Griffin did quite well yesterday and I think the backs as a unit will find their form again. I'm not sure if this is the game for experimentation but I would almost say why not. It will probably be a very close game and I would expect Dublin to win it as they are probably just a little bit further in their development this year, but I do think Kerry can win this.

Would we want to risk the Gooch already though? Are we going to show all our cards this early in the year? And with Barry John and Paul Geaney flying where does James fit in once he comes back? With Star, Stephen O'Brien, Mikey Geaney, Paul Geaney, Gooch, Tommy Walsh, Donnchadh, Buckley, Sheehan, O'Leary, Casey and Darran all fighting for a spot there would be little room for some of the youngsters. Conor Keane, for example, certainly deserves a starting spot during the league to show what he can do, but who would you take off? With the Stacks guys still to come back and Darran and Gooch to be fit soon the Dublin game might be a last chance for the young guys to impress and secure a spot. There's around 14 players fighting for 6 spots and though Buckley, Walsh and Sheehan might also see time at midfield most of the 14 would effortlessly stroll onto any other county team. Maher and Moran should, in my opinion, be the favourites for midfield though there's about 3 to 4 understudies there as well.Depending on the game we could try a lot of different combinations and Eamon seems to prefer challenge games to do so. We are less well served in defence but with the defence already doing quite well in the Derry game against a very good forwards unit and with Killian Young, Aidan O'Mahoney and Crowley still to start a game it is not a bad position there either. Pa Kilkenny needs a bit more game time before Eamon can decide if he's up to the level. He has good and bad games so deserves a bit of confidence. I hope Marc Ó Sé gives it another lash but we'd really have to have someone ready to take over from him once he retires. Lyne does well as a half forward but I expect him to excel this year as an attacking back as he seems to be made for that position. Lyne could become one of the best in that position in my opinion. For the Dublin game I would expect him to be in the half backs again and Griffin in Full back again. They need all the game time they can get before the championship summer starts and with Fitzgerald and McGuire and Sherwood and Murphy all looking for starting spots as well it will be hard even for O'Mahoney, Ó Sé and Young to find a starting spot later on int he year. It keeps players sharp knowing they have to perform well to secure a spot, but it also gives them some piece of mind knowing that even if they can't play for whatever reason or are not selected, that another player will do well. With the black card there another year it is good to have someone come to the field and be just as good. I wouldn't like it if it happens but I expect more teams to use the black card very wisely this year. If an opposition player breaks through around the 50 minutes mark and a defender is already due to be substituted it would make sense for him to make the tackle because even if he does receive a black card he was due to be substituted anyway. It is rather cynical but the black card rule opens up that scenario. It favours the stronger counties with large panels of excellent quality in my opinion, and Kerry are such a county, as are Dublin and Cork. Though Cork and Dublin are flying high already I think both can be beaten by this Kerry team. The question therefore is: do we want to place all our cards on the table this early in the year or do we want to keep our pokerface and and test the other teams before we unleash the true potential? I think Eamon would prefer that last option though I could be wrong. A league title would be nice, but I would rather trade 15 league titles for one Sam. Sam is very much a possibility for Kerry this year so I would prefer to putt all the eggs in that basket.

Kerry v Dublin in a game of tiddlywinks would get the juices flowing. In answer to Seoirse, Eamon Fitz might well keep his cards face down, but Gavin will probably be doing the same. He's picked an unchanged team for the first two league games, and I think only 4 out of what would be considered definite starters in a full strength team have started. Even at that O'Gara and Kev McManamon are not nailed on starters. So it sounds like it will be a phony war, but an interesting one all the same.

Even at that O'Gara and Kev McManamon are not nailed on starters. So it sounds like it will be a phony war, but an interesting one all the same. I think you are right. Gavin, as a very shrewd, smart manager, knows he will need to look at the big picture and the future of the team. What if the Brogans both get injured tomorrow or Connolly? I think that is why he is trying new blood during the league and they are doing reasonably well so far even though they are playing their B team. If they can stay in division 1 with their B-team and quite possibly even get to the semi's, than they will have two very good championship teams. Dublin are still the team to beat, followed closely by Cork. Kerry are in the mix as well. Donegal, Galway, Tyrone, Armagh and Mayo are all very close to the top 3, but I would be surprised if any of those win Sam though any of them might get to the final. I don't see Tyrone as potential Sam winners based on their panel and the way they have played so far. Donegal, under new management, are still very much the same team as last year and a new manager might give them some new possibilities whereas under Jimmy we all knew what to expect from them. Galway are close to winning Connacht this year and if they don't will feature in the quarter finals. They are the team to avoid this year if they would be in the qualifier draw. Armagh looked dangerous last year and I would expect more of them this year as well. Some exciting things being experimented with up there so I wouldn't rule them out to win Ulster or possibly get to the final. For Mayo it is the big year. As they say themselves, this year it is different and it has to be for them. Being the eternal bridesmaids they can't afford to not go all the way this year, but so far I have seen no evidence at all that they are better this year than previous years. A banana peal but not the county that will take Sam home in September, if you'd ask me. Therefore, Cork, Dublin and Kerry are the three most likely contenders for Sam this year and that makes the league very interesting. Cork have thrown all their cards on the table and rely heavily on Colm O'Neill. Some excellent players in Cork and possibly one of the best teams in Cork for a long time, but I think they are still too predictable. Cork are getting results in the league so far and I would expect them to win the league or at the very least make the final. That makes Kerry v Dublin a clash between two teams that certainly won't mind winning the league, but are not really putting the house on a box of league medals. I think we are in for a tactical game reminiscent of the great Karpov-Kasparov clashes of the 80's. I enjoyed those very much, and though I don't share Mr.Kasparov's political views, he was always a bit of a hero of mine. Will Gavin be Karpov or Kasparov on the first of march or will Eamon do what William the Bast*rd did and fein his team is more vulnerable than they actually are? Will he lure Dublin into a trap to be closed during the championship or will he go all out and test the current panel to its limits? Given that Dublin might actually use the same tactic of keeping their trump cards hidden I think Eamon might very well come out with the best team and try to make a statement. There are quite a few players in the Kerry squad who will need game time and young players who want to make a mark this year and conquer starting spots. Last year we were al hoping for Tommy Walsh to come back and now that he has come back we find ourselves wondering where to use him. There is actually very little place for him in the forwards if Star or Barry John do well in full forward, Paul Geaney is flying in the corner, James a sure start in the other corner, Gooch a dead cert for the 40, and a whole host of other forwards are ahead of him. As veteran pointed out we might very well see Stephen O'Brien alongside Gooch on the 40 and with Mikey Geaney, Donnchadh, Sheehan and Buckley all ahead of Tommy currently we might have to reinvent Tommy as an impact sub in midfield, recreate the twin towers, or find another role for him. I won't be all that surprised to see Tommy Walsh being tried at CHB or even at Fullback when we are playing teams with huge full forwards. Personally I would love to see Tommy Walsh take on Michael Murphy, but I can't see Tommy Walsh being effective against the speedy Dublin forwards. There are so many possibilities for this match and I think that the teams named might not be the teams starting. I expect Eamon to name his team first and Dublin to react to that. Eamon can than either believe the team Dublin name or draw his own conclusions. 3 weeks to go and the tactics surely already are bing discussed in training. Whatever the team trains for will have to suffice. I think this will be a must see game.

Now that the management have given up on the idea of making a half forward out of Jonathan Lyne I would like to suggest one further move for him – to the opposite wing back position, on the left, where we will get more out of him. He is not short of pace or strength and is a fine all-round athlete. In my time watching him he appears to be a natural left half back, more confident and effective going forward and kicking for a score off his right foot. It wouldn't discommode Paul Murphy in the slightest and it could work wonders for Jonathan - I.M.O.

I haven't seen enough of him to say which wing suits him best but I am delighted that he is being played at half back. I will be surprised if that man has not nailed down a championship place in that line come the summer. As you say, Paul could effortlessly switch over or indeed into the corner if needs be. I often wonder about the positioning of players on one flank as opposed to the other. For example, I was always intrigued by Paidi's positioning of Aodhan MacGearailt and Noel Kennelly in 2000. He tended to play Noel on the left wing, whereas I felt an out and out left footed player like Noel would have been more comfortable on the right wing. On the other hand Aodhan, with a stronger right foot, should have been happier on the left wing. I had the gall to ask Paidi about it some time late in 2000 but I forget what his reasoning was. Paidi was interesting in the way in that he was prepared to be very patient with irritants like me. I always found him to be very congenial and he would sit down, particularly if the pub was not too busy, and discuss football until the cows came home.

Dublin slip back into the peloton very quickly when Connolly and Ger Brennan are missing. If Vincents make the club final then they wont be playing v Kerry.
Other key man are McAuley and Bastick..( I know you wont agree Veteran).
The two goals v Donegal were gifted. The mess up for the kickout for the first and the juvenile defending for the second. Like something from an u14 game although Jack saw the gap and went for it to be fair to him.
So if both teams play well, I think Kerry will win (assuming the Vincents lads are not playing).

Just a few comments.
I wouldn't play Gouch against Dublin. He would be a marked man, first game back against the oldest enemy. One or two league games will be plenty for him. He's not lacking experience so the games he needs to play plays bears no resemblance to what Pa Kilkenny needs to play. Two league games, league final or a challenge and a the championship is enough for him now, it could mean an extra season in his career.
On the subject of which wing is best for a player. I played most of my football on the 4 wings. The key thing was which foot was the player's natural foot. A right footed wing back going forward would normally feel more comfortable on the right because the wing forward will want to block the centre so will stay inside him away from the foot he is soloing with. Vice versa on the left. I think this is much more important than being on the strong foot if they turn infield.
Predicting who will win against Dublin is impossible. League results have been very unpredictable since the league switched to the Spring. Teams do a lot of physical work at this time of year which effects performance on Sundays, and they try out young players with varying degrees of success. Also managers try to send messages to players - which I think Gavin is doing right now - he needs to get rid of the sense of invincibility

They should rattle a few cages in Connacht this year. They have a good set of scoring forwards with the Murtagh brothers, Donie Shine, Senan Kilbride and Cathal Cregg and should have good young underage talent coming through. Mayo fell over the line against them last year and they are on the easier side of the Connacht championship draw this year so should make Connacht final. And regardless what happens then they'll only be 70 mins from a QF in Croker.

Well said that man.
I think "playing cards close to chest" is irrelevant. Both teams will want to win, but the sky won't fall in for each team, win or lose.
I don't think either team is naïve enough to believe the result will influence in any way a potential championship encounter, unless one team is completely decapitated like Cork in league semi last year.
Without doubt Kerry are the team to beat. Dublin have a super set of players but who's to say that tightening their defence won't siphon some of the fillet knife that is their forward line. How easy will it be to have to adapt to carrying multiple game plans. Gavin is a fine manager but Dublin were badly exposed last year. Is it too trivial to say it was a once off mugging? Think their defence has always been vulnerable. Another cake walk in Leinster awaits that will leave them undercooked and they should hope for a tough opponent in quarters to get them ready for a semi. Mayo and Dublin the two strongest opponents again.Cork? We don't know what hat never mind rabbit could be pulled but they'll need to improve a lot to be in with a shout. Donegal could be tricky also. Roscommon, Galway as wildcards.
Reckon we have the best manager in the land. The things I'm worried about are expectation, of the team, Tommy and the Gooch, none of which were burdens last year. Also, retention has shown to be be factually and statistically a high bar to hit. Yet we're still in a great position...

Connolly will obvioulsy be a different matter. Total agree. A liability. Would do well to get his place back in a championship Dublin 15. Even Jack McCaffrey struggled last year to get a start! Would love to see him get his place back. Gooch will clean him out again.

I'm convinced if Ger Brennan was playing against Donegal, Dublin would have won. Not a great player but holds the backs in position

I see the the Ireland England game is down for 3pm on the 1st of March and the gaa games are down for 2pm. I suppose no one will think of moving the gaa games to 1 pm? No, that would be too bright! I will be attending the first half at least but then I will be out the gap for the rugby. However, Ireland will have some warm-up games for the RWC in August and you can be sure I will be at any Kerry championship game over watching them. You mean you are going to leave a game to watch one on tv? Shocking.
