It's just not small rural clubs who will be affected by this but all clubs- this move is totally anti club. Take the senior clubs who are being asked to fight for their survival- if Tralee ends up with one senior club it will have a serious detrimental effect on football in the town- Tralee needs both Stacks & Rahiillys competing at senior level as does Kerry football- Stacks are the current Div 1 league winners, Rahillys the previous holders- we should be ensuring that football is being promoted in the town not looking to demote one of them; likewise Killorglin, Castleisland, Listowel- all sports are competing for numbers yet if Laune Rangers are demoted there will not be a senior club in any of these towns. There is little wrong with the current set up in the county championship- like all competitions we would prefer to see more competitive games- this could have been remedied by introducing a "Champions League" style group to determine the last 4/8; also, club players need games, not having the summer off as Kerry progress through the championship- we could have enhanced the championship by upgarading some teams having 20 teams instead of 16. Given that we have won the All Ireland minor championship for past 2 years, are currently All Ireland junior champions, Brosna & Ardfert are junior & intermediate champions respectively, there is little wrong with football in the county- going down the current road is surely shooting ourselves in both feet!

Hard to know what's going on with Listowel. Go to one of their home games and the chances are you'll see more supporters from the opposition. This can hardly be inspiring for the team. The interest just doesn't seem to be there and it's been the same for years.
It may be down in large part to a simple lack of promotion. The club could surely do more to advertise and hype up fixtures; even a few posters about the town, signs on the gate. Which doesn't of itself put points on the scoreboard but it wouldn't hurt. At present you get the sense of a team somewhat disengaged from the wider community and vice-versa.

Just because Listowel is a big town doesn't mean it has a God given right to be a productive line of great footballers. Soccer aside plenty of players are dual players and can fit both sports into there training. Plenty of players choose football over soccer, so no excuses Listowel just aren't clicking on the field. There are green/gold jersey reps all over the first 15... The only hope Listowel have is that, the only way is up, and finally they are producing Kerry minors again and hopefully will do for a few years to come. If you recall a lot of teams tend to drop down before they bounce back up, Desmond's recently had a severe slide and now there a team to watch. Stacks were relegated from 1 a few years back and came back to get to an all Ireland semi last year. Clubs have a cycle and Listowel is at its bottom, Now, the only way is UP and if they start performing, we will all wonder what the fuss is about.

Has a club ever won back to back titles at the same grade? Dr crokes in recent years come to mind!! Seriously though, I think teams that won the intermediate a few years ago had the option of going up or staying at intermediate level so there might be someone going back a few years. I can't think of anyone off hand though.

Would it not have distorted the numbers if another team had to come down

Yeah teams definitely had the option not to go up - remember talking to some lads who had won intermediate a while back and they knew themselves they had no business playing senior but felt obligated as a club to go up. One thing that tends to come against intermediate sides who go up is that because they often tend to be playing and training until February they tend to suffer down the road with tiredness and injury - you often have a few lads who will be struggling with fitness and do everything possible to play in the club semi-finals and finals and even the lads who don't pick up injuries won't have gotten a break. Also intermediate sides often wouldn't have the squad depth of some of the more established senior clubs so a few retirements and injuries (especially to their key players) and the side that takes to the field in the senior championship can look very different to the side that won promotion a year before.

I 'think' that the year Annascaul won it they were going to have quite a few retirements the next year and so wanted to remain in intermediate.

Maybe they should insist teams are in div 1 of the county League before they move from intermediate to senior championship?
Ardfert lasted one season in the senior championship and probably would still have been relegated in a normal year when one team went down.

I hope the powers that be know what they are doing forcing stronger clubs down the grades.
It was done at a time when the Sam Maguire, the Hogan Cup, the minor all Ireland, the club titles in junior and intermediate trophy were resident in the county.
No one can give a compelling reason for it.
The smallest clubs need to have realistic achievable goals to aim for in order to keep going.

The flip side of the coin. Again the Kerry senior club has come up short outside of the Kerry championship. Nemo looked very comfortable yesterday against Kerry's best championship club side. The stats don't lie.

The flip side of the coin. Again the Kerry senior club has come up short outside of the Kerry championship. Nemo looked very comfortable yesterday against Kerry's best championship club side. The stats don't lie. The lack of jobs in Kerry coupled with emigration and crazy planning policy has led to massive rural depopulation. Throw in competition from other sports and lack of interest due to fixture list and the club scene has taken a hammering. In times like this decent urban club sides tend to triumph over rural districts. The uncomfortable prospect of amalgamation will rear its head in the coming 3-5 years. Decent current adult teams are not being replenished by minors coming through as families move away. Castlegregory are in a playoff to survive relegation to Division 5 after their heroics a few years ago. I would think that probably close to 50% of club teams have less than 20 players togged out for county league games. It is right at the tipping point now.

The football Club All-Ireland is a hell of a tough competition - it's fairly hard to argue with the notion that it's the toughest competition in the GAA to win [I'm not sponsored by AIB but the tag-line sure does seem appropriate] In the last 10 years, Kerry teams have won 5 Munsters and this year is the first year since 2008 a Kerry team won't be in the final) and Crokes only lost the All-Ireland final in 2006 after a replay. It's not as if Kerry teams are getting embarrassed in the competition.

The under lying theme of the conversation is the strength of the Kerry senior clubs in the local championship. Crokes have been in the top four clubs in Ireland for a while but haven't got over the line.

It would be an interesting research project for the county board to survey the St. Marys players for their opinions next March regarding the training to games ratio and collect their experiences of that 3-4 month window of games.
