That's a lovely line and image. It is certainly nice and romantic all right in the club context in the autumn/winter club window. It won't pay the bills at national level though for the Association or generate the cash flow. Why are you such a grouch?

I know finance is important but its not the only thing. Sometimes I think its the only thing that matters to the GAA.
And the intercounty fare is poor a lot of the time and often it is reprehensible.

Yes Spa missed a couple of goal chances and at crucial stages in the game also. Mike Stam had a penalty saved by Austin Constable who ended up getting Man of the match, which is an indicator in itself. I only landed to the game 20 mins late so I will leave a report to someone else, overall of what I saw I thought Marys deserved to win on the day. Spa will take pride from the fact they are an extremely young team and are certainly a team to watch out for in future.

They seem to have that 'team for the future' tag for a few years now.. 3 lost finals is either gonna ruin them or drive them to eventual victory

In fairness Spa have to get over the line at some stage - in fairness Stam and Garnett around for ages would be good to see them make the breakthrough again - that was a good Mary's team though they did ride their luck today

Garnett was marking Bryan Sheehan and found it hard to curb his influence. Spa have a very young team, I think 3 minors started, and they looked very nervy to me. Marys started well but when Spa got level with about 10 minutes to go it looked they would win. Spa missed a couple of goal chances but Marys missed a few chances too and the best team won. Brian Curran and Conor O Shea were good at the back, Sheehan at midfield with Paul O Donoghue and Aidan Walsh the most notable of the forwards. Maurice Fitz was a great player and noted for his fair play but he made sure his team stopped Spa's Shane Cronin from getting into goal scoring chances by whatever means possible. He must have been fouled 10 times, only 2 or 3 of these were picked up by the ref cos most of them happened behind his back. The linesmen or umpires might as well not have been there at all.

It is interesting to note that Mairice's first foray into management has yielded a county championship. An interesting space to keep an eye on all the same. As Darragh pointed out in his book, Maurice wore an amour of steel beneath his silken footballing skills.

Ya I totally agree with you about Cronin! For a young player just going out to do what he can to help his club win the game and getting battered every time he went forward was terrible to watch! Watching it from the stands I could feel the frustration in him and the refs doing nothing about it. The time Denis Daly clattered him off the ball for no reason was defiantly a black card I'm not sure why they have the cards and they won't use them. But fair play to marys they were probably better team but spa could of easily found themselves winning the game. Exciting game

Yup - he had an absolute stinker - pretty much his worst game I've seen him play for Spa in years. Stam was only very average as well. Pity for the two lads to have such an off-day in the final. The fact that Spa did manage to get back into it with these 2 big players only having a very limited influence is probably a good sign. Even though Stam and Garnett have been around a fair bit I'd imagine both are still only approaching the 30 year mark so I would expect them both to be around for a while more yet. The problem next year is Marys will be there again (due to no promotion) plus will be joined by the 3 teams relegated from senior which will make the intermediate a beast of a competition next year. If Marys were promoted and there was only one team relegated from senior, it would make competition for the intermediate next year a lot less severe (especially if some big names end up getting relegated) Agree about the linesmen and umpires being absolutely useless in terms of protecting young Cronin. Be surprised if Marys don't continue the trend of Kerry's teams making a serious impression in terms of the intermediate club All-Ireland. Have a lot of decent footballers for this level of competition.

Great victory for St Mary's and yes they may well go all the way to winning the all-Ireland, as for Spa it's heartbreaking to be beaten in the final again and yes next year it will be even harder to win it. I know it's not much consolation but at least they have won the all-Ireland a few years ago.

Listowel at Junior level with the pick they have is not right, as it is our Junior teams are much stronger than most counties. Whatever about Kerry trying to sort out the county championship it's surprising that the munster council have allowed this to happen. Listowel to win the Junior next year!!

If listowel are too poor to win either the first round or a relegation match, they don't deserve to be intermediate. Munster council are hardly gonna come out and play the match for them

Real low point for Listowel Emmets at the moment being relegated to Junior status when you consider that a year ago they were reining North Kerry League and championship holders and also a Division 1 team, Lots of rumours doing the rounds about players revolt against Management and club executive , Manager Noël Kennelly stood down earlier this year only to reinstate himself again a few days later ( strange) Some players not turning up to training and rumours of return to booze mentality by a lot of younger so called stars, also discipline very poor by all accounts For a club like Listowel it's sad to see but maybe it will be a turning point for them. For a large town they should be dining at the top table !

I just cannot understand why the County Board thought it was a good idea to relegate 4 clubs from the intermediate grade. The Junior Championship in Kerry is already by far and away the strongest in the Country and a competition Kerry clubs have dominated for over 10 years and will continue to do so. What the hell are they smoking?
We already have teams like Glenbeigh, Firies, Beaufort and Templenoe, and now add in Listowel, possibly Brosna, last years All Ireland Champions, and quiet possibly Gneeveguilla and Finuge, both of whom were Senior Clubs a couple of years ago. Surely all the above teams would hold their own at Intermediate level in most Counties. I just think if the County board wanted to reduce the number of Senior Clubs, fair enough, maybe they could have had 2 intermediate grades, a bit like Cork, an 8 team Premier and maybe a 16 team Intermediate. I'm just thinking out loud here.
Also while I'm having a rant, the County league needs to be looked at, I'm hearing that games are going out as far as December which is a joke. Maybe reducing it to 10 team leagues might be better.

The solution that they have come up with is a retrograde step for all clubs not just intermediate or junior- it's not fair enough to reduce the no of senior clubs as there is no guarantee that this will improve the senior county championship- maybe the divisional sides could have been re vamped for instance- Shannon Rangers have struggled for years, maybe have one team in Nk? Look at East Kerry- they were on the receiving end of a 17 point hammering from Starnd Rd but had only a handful of clubs available to them from their division- 3 of their clubs, Cordal, Currow & Scart play with St Kieran's!! St Kieran's also include Knocknagoshel & Brosna who play in NK- Ballymac also play with St Kieran's but play in Tralee district board- if these clubs were re assigned to their respective divisional boards it would maybe give them a chance of being competitive. All clubs here are being hammered- Rathmore could end up being relegated, so could Stacks/Rahillys- is this supposed to benefit Kerry football? You could not make it up!

Your dead right in all of the above. One other point I forgot to add was, it's not the intermediate or the Junior championships that will suffer here, in fact, in theory they should be stronger, what and or who is going to suffer in all this is the smaller clubs who might or would have had a realistic chance of winning a Junior Championship or an Intermediate Championship. Off the top of my head I'll list a few clubs, say Scart, or Listry, Churchill, St. pats or even Brosna. I think it will become near impossible for such clubs with already small playing numbers to win a Junior County in the future. Same probably applies to Intermediate. I just can't see the logic in it at all

Listowel to junior is a big set back. I know soccer is strong in the town but the club really should be a competitive senior team. At different stages Killorglin and Castleisland have had super senior teams winning all Ireland senior club titles. Listowel has never scaled them heights.
