Very disappointing once again. Darragh was and will always be regarded as one of the greatest players to wear the green and gold, but now can we just agree to get him to step away from management. After the sham that was last year, giving him another chance was deemed to be a fair assessment by some. Not by me, we are Kerry and what happened to us at home against Cork was not good enough. I was probably being harsh but after today I don't think so.
The team selection was very puzzling. I know you had to blood some of last years minor panel as they are the future and have proven themselves as winners. However, going up to a fortress like Pairc Ui Rinn against a physically strong Cork side with 6 minors starting is just madness in my opinion. Aside from that, there was a clear lack of scoring forwards on our 24 for tonight. Playing with 2 men inside(both who I do consider scoring forwards) is fine as a plan but what happens if you need to change it? Our only other proven scorer was Savage who we lost early on to a black card. He was replaced by Greg Horan - very good footballer, not a scoring forward. Burns is an excellent prospect but I wouldn't say scoring is one of his best attributes. Crowley another very good player but again not exactly prolific. I'm not saying you need 6 but only having 3 on the 24 is just beyond comprehension for me. Kevin McCarthy on the bench is good but surely someone like Killian Spillane/Niall Sheehy or a handful of others would have been useful to have spring from the bench if we needed scores. My last point on this rant is the fact that unused substitute Gary O'Sullivan never got to grace the turf. So Billy Morgan has publicly stated his belief in Gary's ability, played him midfield for the Sigerson and Darragh sees fit not to play him. As has been stated previously on this forum topic, he's very strong so physicality isn't the issue. Eanna O'Connor comes on, someone behind Gary in the pecking order in UCC (from Darragh's club hmmmm), and Liam Carey who couldn't start on last year's minor team also comes on. Now Carey should have started last year for the minors and is a very good footballer but at this level at his age to be competing with fellas 3 years older than him and much stronger, it's mind boggling. I'm sure Cork's dominance at this grade will be stopped next year or the year after but for goodness sake give someone else a crack at managing this talented crop of players.

What a joke . They were terrible . The Forwards apart from Conor Keane were terrible . Cork should have won by more . Much more physical . Some of our players just too small . Darragh O'Se has to go . His record is terrible . Only Conor Keane looks anywhere near the Senior Panel . The sad thing is this was one of Corks Poorer teams and they were missing two of their better players . If Jack O'Connor is available next year he has to get it . Something serious has to be done about our record at this level . It's disgraceful for a county like Kerry .

You can't start 6 minors on a county u-21 team and expect to win. If it happened at club level there would be serious questions; never mind a county with our pick. A championship record of played 3 lost 3 is not good reading for Darragh and co. Managers need to learn from mistakes, doing it at county level is tough and unfair on the manager. Darragh needs to take Gealtach, a school side, ITT someone to build up some experience before giving it another lash. We need to get this grade right next a munster win is a must. Have Cork ever done 5 in a row at any level before? Who were the 6 minors? I didn't see any..

Overall poor performance, no sign of a plan B, lots of training to lose a game like that, couldn't imagine the silence in the dressing room afterwards.. I thought Shane Ryan was good in terms of dominating the air over an imposing peter Kelleher as well as making a brilliant save. However I do feel his kickouts need work, they too often slice high into the air landing on the wing backs. I got from Cormac Coffey exactly what I expected. Great interceptions and pace yet reckless headlessness including kicking the ball anyway aimlessly on numerous occasions, also got caught ball watching for goal Gavin Crowely did alright on Peter Kelleher aerially but got skinned my Micheal Hurley came on. Brian Begley performed admirably against one of Cork's most renowned players, only conceding one point from play. Also blew his man out over the end line with a good shoulder in first half Ronan Murphy was probably the highest collecter of breaks all day but was part of a Kerry half back line that was overrun in first 10 mins Denis Daly struggled, carried the ball into the tackle too much, came up against a physically strong Brian O'Driscol although Cork did rotate their forwards Cathal Long was relatively anonymous throughout the game, not sure whether that is good or bad for a wing back. Barry Sullivan was the best player for Kerry for me. Caught numerous kick outs and controlled the game as much as he could. His use of his body is unreal Jack Barry did alright in midfield, wasn't dominated by his opponent but crucially failed to see Greg Horan early enough for goal chance. Michael Burns had an off night. Failed to really take the game by the scruff of the neck, made a couple of good runs in the first half but his stand out moment was dummy soloing a defender but then shanking the ball off his left I can't comment on Jack Savages red card as I did not see it. Greg Horan didn't attack the game as I felt he would. Involved in one lovely move in second half that led to Brian Crowely's point. That Crowely point was the highlight of a mixed day of Brian. Failed to really get involved and only blocked up full forward line in my view (Management's call) Matthew Flathery struggled. Although he is all heart and effort he struggled to get involved. Was blown out of the way for first goal and was intercepted in crucial counter attack in second half Darragh Roche was causing the Cork backs a good bit of problems. His strength drew frees but never got a real shot at goal. Conor Keane was Kerry's best forward. Those frees in the second half were out of the top drawer considering they were from the wrong side Subs Kevin mcCathy won the few balls he got so couldn't ask any more Eanna Connor got a black card within a minute of coming on Liam Carey lost the one ball he got unfortunately Cathal Murphy wasn't really involved

Do you think it warranted a black card? If that was a black card then we'll have 10+ a game What was it for, couldn't see it? Caught a Cork player high around the neck as he was coming out with the ball. Great for us to put one over the old enemy at this level again.Such a shame we can't translate this success to senior level as the talent is obviously there.

Felt sorry for the players tonight to be honest. They tried hard but seemed to have no discernible game plan. I think Darragh needs to step away in fairness.
He spent 50 mins watching cork rip through the kerry defence at will and did nothing. We needed to funnell players back. Tactically he was inept. Our forwards apart from Keane were poor.
Our only kickout strategy was a big 50/50 down the middle.
Would like to see some one like Mike Quirke get go or maybe Tommy Griffin who has been involved with Pobail Scoil for a few years now.

Spillane and Cillian Fitzgerald dropped from the panel during the week, I know the players expected Fitzgerald to start, strong athletic and very creative in the forward line either half or preferably full F. Was badly needed tonight, crazy to drop him in a game like this where we needed strength. He had a bloody good team to make a statement this year. Great player but needs to run fast from management at this level until all the major feathers grow !!!

Just home from the game, a very disappointing outing by a poorly organised team. As said before they had no plan B and couldn't handle the Cork running game. This game was there to be won, but unfortunately we just weren't good enough. No guidance on the sideline, Dara O Se just doesnt cut it as a manager for me. From seeing them playing Cavan above in Laois a few months ago, as McCabe and Moynihan took the warm up, Dara was happy out kicking balls over the bar, not even watching the warm up or the drills. Tonight then he didn't even have the decency to meet a fella when he was substituted, they just went straight into the dugout.
As for the commenter that said you cant start 6 minors and expect to win, although they didnt win it was as a result of any of their performances in my opinion. I thought both corner backs Coffey and Begley played well. Premier said Coffey was caught ball watching for the goal, this wasnt the case. Flaherty lost the ball from a tackle from behind and Coffey had to come tackle the ball that had won the ball and there was no cover behind. Matthew hadn't protected the ball in a dangerous situation and it cost us dearly. Begley was solid, and for a fella thats still in PCD performed admirably against a decent Cork corner forward. I agree with Premier with regards to Crowley though himself and Ryan handled Kelleher well between them but with Hurley it was a different kettle of fish, and he looked menacing when introduced.
I thought the half back line were cleared out completely. Murphy was the best of an overall disappointing bunch, on numourous occasions when the kick out came short than expected Cork half forward line went up for uncontested high balls and started an attack from there. O Driscoll and White were a constant thorn in our sides today and ran us ragged. Midfield I'd imagine we won 60-40, which highlights how poorly we used the ball. Barry Sullivan was outstanding again, catching ball and midfield and controlling the game. Jack Barry was equally as solid, and it was disappointing that we couldnt build on our advantage at midfield at times throughout the game.
Half forward line was where this game was lost in my opinion. Crowley and Burns were non existant for large portions of the game. Crowley lacked pace and lost out on alot of 50/50 and 60/40 balls. Burns never really got going and seemed to be out of sync with the rest of the forwards, albeit for a few outstanding kickpasses by him. Savage was black carded after 14 mins, I felt it was very harsh and couldnt understand why he got a black card. Yellow was warented in my opinion, nothing more and nothing less. HIs replacement Horan was poor also, Id imagine his run with Stacks as emptied his tank. Never really got involved.
2man full forward line looked dangerous when they did get the ball. Keane was impressive from placed balls and took his goal nicely with a bounce/dummy that Gooch would be proud of. Missed a free when we were 2 points down that seemed vital at the time. I thought Dara Roche while he didnt get many scores was outstanding, he created a fair few problems for the Cork defence with his running and was fouled in scoring positions on numerous occasions. Flaherty was at fault for the goal but battled hard despite being the smallest man on the pitch. We bailed with the sweeper after the first half and he never really got involved in the second half as much as we would of or he would have liked. Subs didnt make much of an impact when introduced. A disappointing night out by all accounts, and a disappointing few years with Dara in charge.

Very disappointing 3 years for the U21's.
What was Darragh's management experience before this gig? Seems like he isn't cut for it. It's often the case in other sports that great players don't make good managers.
Jack O'Connor will surely step in next year. Hopefully he can develop another good minor team this year and that would build a great foundation for Kerrys future.

As a Rebel I empathise completely with the disappointment being felt here with the result last night but following 2014 you should be far from despondent. It is my firm belief that the incubator effect of CIT and UCC for concentrating Cork football talent for a few years after minor level has been a major factor in Corks recent successes at U21 level. A significant number of the players from the last few years have all been nurtured in these institutions resulting in better physical conditioning, preparation and most importantly unity of purpose and approach. Most of these guys during their time in these places have fallen under the tutelage of experienced and successful coaches and the fact that in a county with the spread we have that all these guys are based in the city for the crucial few months leading up to the commencement of the U21 FC cannot be understated.
I am sure the Kerry management given that guys were probably spread from West Kerry to Cork, Limerick and beyond over the last few months has limited the amount of meaningful preparation that could happen during the week and weekends may have been used for cramming.

Cork u21 1-12 Kerry u21 1-9
IN Kerry, the rising tide of All-Ireland senior and minor successes isn't lifting all boats. The county's dire recent record in the Under 21 grade continued at the hands of their primary punishers, Cork, at Páirc Uí Rinn tonight.
Over the hour Cork - now with five wins in the bounce over their old enemy in the grade - were the better side.
More importantly, they were the better side when it mattered - in the final fifteen minutes when the game was there to be won at 1-8 each.
The likes of captain, Brian O'Driscoll, centre back Sean White and subs Conor Horgan and Michael Hurley provided the final quarter vigour and intent to see Sean Hayes' men into another Munster final - on April 8th in Thurles against Semple Stadium.
There were periods in both halves when Kerry's footballing nous looked like it might bring its reward. Conor Keane, their corner forward, was a constant menace, as was Micheal Burns until his withdrawal ten minutes from time.
However the fact that Keane claimed 1-7 of their total says a lot.
In Barry O'Sullivan, the visitors also had the game's dominant midfielder, but around the fringes, with the likes of Brian O'Driscoll foraging, Cork looked that bit better.
In that last 15 minutes, Clonakilty's Sean White powered forward with impunity, while sub Conor Horgan claimed two important points. Sean O'Donoghue also had a goal chance to put daylight between the sides, but was foiled by Shane Ryan in the Kerry goal.
In the red zone, it was mostly Cork asking the questions. Another success over Kerry in this grade was all but done before Eanna O Conchuir became the second Kerry forward to be black-carded in short order.
This trend does not seem to be damaging Kerry's production line, but it must surely also be aiding Cork's.
Given the lack of progress they've made in this grade of late, the early portents were not good for Darragh Ó Sé's men.
Where Cork buzzed with intent from their half-back line in the first period, Kerry looked hesitant. The jersey looked heavy on them.
Within seven minutes, the reigning champions had jumped into a 1-2 to no score lead, Inniscarra's Sean O'Donoghue breaking in from the left wing and finishing with aplomb.
Strangely though, Cork would go another 20 minutes before they added to their early score-burst - by which time they had lost the influential Kevin Crowley to injury.
Kerry's plight looked onerous, but it was to get worse when Jack Savage, the in form centre forward, was black-carded in the 15th minute for a late tackle.
He had just registered Kerry's first from a free, but if his colleagues felt the blow to the solar plexus, they didn't show it.
Dara Roche roamed deep from his nominal full-forward posting, and it was his great graft up the right wing that produced a Kerry goal.
His effort for a point was palmed out by Cork keeper Micheal Martin, but not to the man he would have wished - Legion's Conor Keane was calm and patient before he netted.
The same player pointed in the 25th minute to tie the match. This was a period of Kerry control but Cork never allowed them to make it anything more than fleeting.
The Rebels led 1-4 to 1-2 at the break, but Kerry's dominance at midfield gave them the platform to edge 1-6 to 1-5 in front by the 40th minute.
Peter Kelleher claimed an inspirational score from Cork, battling through tackle after tackle to point. When Cathal Vaughan then nudged them ahead, Cork drove for the winning post.
More questions in Kerry then.
Scorers for Cork: C Vaughan (0-4, 3 frees); S O'Donoghue (1-1), S White, P Kelleher, C Horgan (0-2 each), B O'Driscoll (0-1).
Scorers for Kerry: C. Keane (1-7, 6 frees), J. Savage (free), B Crowley (0-1 each).
CORK: M Martin (Nemo Rangers); M McSweeney (Newcestown), J Davis (Douglas), S Cronin (Nemo Rangers); T O’Rourke (Carbery Rangers), S White (Clonakilty), K Crowley (Millstreet); A O’Donovan (Nemo Rangers), D Murphy (Valley Rovers); K Davis (O’Donovan Rossa), B O’Driscoll (Tadhg Mac Cárthaigh), D O'Callaghan (Clyda Rovers); C Vaughan (Iveleary), P Kelleher (Kilmichael), S O’Donoghue (Inniscarra).
Subs: D Quinn (St Finbarr's) for K Crowley (21, inj); M Hurley (Castlehaven) for O'Callaghan (37); C. Horgan (Nemo Rgs) for K Davis (47); C Kiely (Ballincollig) for McSweeney (55).
KERRY: S Ryan (Rathmore); C Coffey (Kerins O’Rahillys), G Crowley, capt (Templenoe), B Ó Beaglaoich (Gaeltacht); R Murphy (Beaufort), D Daly (St Marys), C Ó Lúing (Gaeltacht); J Barry Na Gaeil), B O’Sullivan (Dingle); B Crowley (Templenoe), J Savage (Kerins O’Rahillys), M Burns (Dr Crokes); M Flaherty (Dingle), D Roche (Glenflesk), C Keane (Legion).
Subs: G Horan (Austin Stacks) for Savage (BC, 15); K McCarthy (Kilcummin) for Burns (50); C Murphy (Rathmore) for Daly (50); E O Conchuir (Gaeltacht) for B Crowley (55); L Carey (Beaufort) for O Conchuir (BC, 57).
Referee: D O'Mahoney (Tipperary)

The Expected result to be fair given the lack of faith in the manager and lack of experience in the team.
Should be much stronger next year with a change in management.
Question....what teams did Darragh manage before he got this gig and did he have any success with them?
The way lads are selected to manage teams at this grade, needs to be looked at, you just can't give them positions based on their playing careers.
Our record at this level is now officially a disgrace, 2 munsters in 17 years now at u-21

Wouldn’t know many of the players and would be depending on what you guys say. Seems to be unanimous that Darragh must go.
The references to “6 minors” – I take it that this means 6 of last year’s successful team – which makes them under 19 this season – not very unusual I would have thought. Someone said all kickouts were straight down the centre – remember what Jack O’Connor said about Darragh and the Fear Laidir… To be fair to Darragh someone else said we won 60/40 at midfield so it was successful enough. Also references to great players not making good managers and reference to Darragh kicking around during warm up. Maybe that is the key as to why they don’t make managers – the lure of the physical challenge is irresistible but they are not drawn to the preparation/tactical/analytical side.
Would have thought from what I saw of Austin Stacks that Greg Horan deserved a starting place?
Success at minor level is more important IMO so I would prefer to see Jack O’Connor staying where he is.

Thanks for the reports from the lads who were there.
I presume that's it now for Darragh O Se. People are going to slate him but I doubt there is anybody more down about the results in the county than him. Rumour went around last September that he was trying to get Donie Buckley on board but obviously the new Mayo management persuaded him to stay. The McCabe lad from the north got retained and maybe people who were there last night could let me know if the tackling and kicking had improved any bit from last year? Its disappointing to hear comments about the lack of game plan and changing things when we were in trouble, I would have hoped Darragh, with Moynihan by his side, would have been more capable in that department.
Moving on from last night, is there 3 or 4 of that panel that could add to the senior panel? I was thinking Shane Ryan, Crowley (the back), Barry Sullivan and Conor Keane?

Was not at the match but listened to the Radio Kerry version of the game. Despite the youthful side and all the issues raised in earlier comments we were level entering the home straight. Cork got the last three scores I think to win the game by 3 - Cork brought players off the bench to win the game and either we did not have a good bench or we used it poorly. Think we lost a close one to Roscommon in the Hastings Cup also - is this mental fragility, poor sideline or just an inferior team. Our record at this grade is poor with 15 wins from 31 games since 2000. How many of this team will have a senior career - I think something like 6 of the U21 that was on the wrong end of our biggest ever loss to Cork at U21 won senior AI last year.

Shane Ryan and Barry O'Sullivan will definitely make it not this year but down the road . Brian Crowley will probably get a look but not this year . The only one I could see maybe getting a place on the Bench for the summer would be Conor Keane . It will be hard this year to make the senior panel with Cooper , Donnacha and O'Donoghue to come back plus he has to fight players like Daithi Casey , Kieran O'Leary , Shane O'Callaghan , Paul O'Donoghue , and Alan Fitzgerald for places but he has the skills . If he doesn't make it this year then he will get a good look in the League next year .

Of the Backs I would say they might look at Gavin Crowley in the League but he lacks pace . Cormac Coffey defintely has the pace but his passing need to improve but he is a couple of years away . Greg Horan possibly next year . Jack Barry maybe in the half back line . I think Brian Begley will be the best of them he will be our next Full Back in time .
