Astute management includes being brave enough to take a gamble. Plain or otherwise. And being prepared to take the consequences be they positive or negative.

But would it not have been more astute to have him on from the start if the plan was to hurt Mayo with the high ball tactic? Do u not agree it was last throw of the dice stuff, and only came about because the situation Kerry were in was absolute desperation. Anyway it worked, and Donaghy rightly started the replay, which was good management.

Its a gamble that worked though. Sometimes its the gambles that make you look great. It could easily go the other way. That gamble saved our season and certainly injected a huge confidence back into KD for the remainder of the summer.

The big gambles grow legs when they work. If Star went in and never touched the ball, nobody would have made any comment, except maybe to say the man was finished. I doubt there would have been any calls for him to have been on earlier.
I think they got the second half badly wrong on the line in the drawn game, but hindsight makes that an easy comment to throw out. My own take is they thought they could weather the storm, but as the half drained on the storm showed no sign of abating. I was taken by the length of time the dominance lasted, it must have been pushing 25 mins, 20 anyway. Eamonn and the boys seemed to leave it and leave it until they finally made a change. It wasn't a straightforward 35 minutes to manage, and that level of dominance by Mayo could not have been forecast at half time. When momentum goes against you, it's only partly in your control to get it back. We got lucky but our boys earned every score in that come back.
Those games with Mayo have set the foundation of psychological fortitude in the era if this team and management. It created the baseline game time fitness and belief that carried the All Ireland. This team I believe will not be outfought unless they are not good enough. Seamo hit the nail on the head though, hunger is the key now. You must have it to win the All Ireland, no matter how many fit, gifted or experienced players you have. We have have the right management team to foster it, but it will still have to come from each player.
Standing back from all that seriousness for the coming months hunger and indeed thirst will be associated with social gatherings and may they enjoy them

Talk of KD being a gamble is ridiculous, what yew are forgetting is that Fitzy & Co knew their team intimately which we didn't. KD won this All Ireland for us because he was a key member of a team that happens to be the best team in Ireland this year, simple, as that. Joe Brolly was proved to be the jerk that we all long suspised he was and even Pat got it wrong; well so did I with Dublin but I did believe we had the measure of Donegal.
I think we are not taking the credit here, we won Sam, that is Heaven, and we are only in transition, I am not advocating that we turn hunger for the Sam into thirst of drinking out if it, but we deserve to enjoy it, everyone, from the young lad who AO'M presented his boots to right up to Fitzy & Co, including all the fans on here and especially those who were consigned to the emigrant ship.

Had been discussing with my old man since the Galway game how the plan might be to not give Donaghy any gametime and allow him to be forgotten about before springing him on Dublin's dodgy full back line in the final out of the blue.
I suspect that was part of the thinking with the hope that we would be able to get over Mayo without doing it.

Maybe gamble was the wrong choice of word. Not too sure about the above, in last years semi when Donaghy came on Dublin just moved Flynn back to sweep in front of him, with O'Carroll just breaking ball down, and it worked well. Anyway, ifs buts and maybe's, Kerry are champions again, great achievement by an inexperienced team. And with Walsh and Cooper to come back in it only adds to the strength of this young team. Hopefully the Dubs put themselves in a position to have a go at ye in the latter stages next year. In terms of all stars, I believe the average has been about 6 for the winners over the last few years. By my reckoning you will get: O'Mahoney, Murphy, Moran, O'Donoghue, Donaghy. Crowley is a maybe, in the absence of a convincing candidate elsewhere, unless they give it to Boyle, who is really a wing back, but moved to CHB to accomodate Vaughan's move to midfield in the semi.

Star was injured earlier in the year, which we seem to be forgetting. As a result he missed alot of training plus other guys ie. Geaney's, SOB took their chances to jump ahead of him in the pecking order.
It's these factors that we didn't see him until we did. It's like the saying goes, timing is everything! Star was fit and came into form at just the right time we needed him to. Plus that timing was just right for Star as Sheehan, Declan, Darren and SOB all started to struggle with injuries. Timing.

Diarmaid Connolly should have got an all star in 2013. He doesn't deserve one in 2014.
Bernard Brogan rightly got one in 2013 for his performances in the semi final and the final...the only two games he played well in and the only two that mattered. For the same reason Donaghy should be a certainty for an all star in 2014. He turned Kerry from being serious contenders to all Ireland champions.

Heard Brian Carthy on 2FM this morning (he is on All Star committee or something) and he made mention that the three Player of the Year nominations are guaranteed All Stars - this leaves 42 for 12 positions and makes competition in the Full Back, Half Forward and Full Forward lines even tougher with one position in each line already filled.

Strange that they put Paul Murphy in the full back category and Mahony in the half back category,
Also Michael Murphy nominated in the half forwards leaves the door open for Donaghy.
When are they announced?

Even stranger that the Nominations reward the Ulster style of football more than any other Province with the Provincial breakdown - Ulster 16. Munster 13, Leinster 9 and Connaught 7. Does anybody have the basis on which nomination and selection is done?

Quite honestly, Paul Murphy not being nominated for young player of the year is a joke. And now with him being selected in the full back line as well he may struggle to pick up an All Star with O'Mahony the more familiar face getting an award in that line.
Ryan McHugh was taken off in the All-Ireland Final in part because of the job Murphy did on him, but the Donegal man still ends up with a selection for YPOTY despite Murphy going on to win MOTM as well... You have to feel backs do come up short in these awards, hopefully there will be many more years for him to pick up All-Stars.
Also Dublin ended up with 9 nominations the same amount as Donegal... I wonder who will pick up the 'Coman Goggins Handy All-Star Award' this year?
EDIT
Just spotted O'Mahony wasn't nominated! I thought that was a sure thing.

A great friend of mine and an ardent GAA follower, now gone to his eternal reward once told me this story concerning All Star awards. 1977 Dublin got the better of Kerry in the All Ireland semi final and then very easily defeated Armagh in the final. There was very little between Kerry and Dublin that year.Dublin got 9 All Star awards from the media know alls who selected the All Stars in those years,Kerry got 2 awards. The following year 1978 Kerry took the 9 All Star team apart in the All Ireland final and defeated Dublin by 17 points. My friend wrote to the Independent GAA reporter and All Star selector stating that seeing that Kerry had defeated the super 9 All Star team by 17 points could Kerry also expect 9,10 or maybe 11 All Stars awards in 1978.The team had walked through the All Ireland. He printed the letter in the Indo and replied that it made sense and maybe Kerry should get 10 awards. Kerry got 6 awards in 1978. My point and its only my opinion is that Kerry rarely get their due so I am expecting 5 awards 6 would be a bonus for US.I would not be giving Connolly an All Star award but going on the point I am trying to make above I think he will get one as I think there is still bias in the selection. I don’t get excited about the all stars. Maybe it’s because I have seen a lot of episodes like the one narrated by Ballybunion. I also think it’s the credibility of the selectors – i.e. the media. When you grow up in Kerry you learn about the game from men that have been there – under that dropping ball and learned how to deal with every situation. As the years go by you accumulate a wealth of knowledge. So much so that when I open a newspaper now that claims to have an in-dept analysis of any game I don’t even bother reading it. Too many times I have found that the college of journalism whatever it does, does not imbue that type of knowledge. So why should I get excited about a team picked by a bunch of these hacks. As everyone knows the media is very pro Dublin. Connolly is a great footballer but has not done enough this year to deserve one. Funny how when a Dublin club wins the All-Ireland club it becomes relevant for the All Stars. St Brigid’s won it last year and St Gall’s of Antrim won it in 2010. Who from those teams got All Stars? The goal that Connolly got recently that all the media is talking about, even O’Rourke referred to in the All-Ireland coverage was in a game they won easily in the SECOND ROUND OF THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP. Do Sky have a selector this year? If they do will someone paid by Murdoch have the spirtit the All Stars at heart or will they be a diligent employee and turn it into a business opportunity? “Its life, Jim, but not as we know it” Any way best of luck to the lads. Some will get the awards they deserve and some won’t.

Looks like Donnachadh Walsh will lose out again this year. Last year he lost out to Sean Kavanagh and this year he will probably lose out to one of the Dublin or Donegal lads. The whole selection process is a joke in my opinion. Was his best year yet in a Kerry jersey.

No way Cluxton or Hurley should've received nominations. Mark Lynch? Did nothing in the Championship. Brian Kelly deserved to be at least nominated.

Ryan McHugh would be a decent shout for this award. He had a fine year but for the final. 2) I have not seen a single best 15 of the year selection that has left Paul out. He'll get his All - Star in the full- back line even though he primarily lined out at 5. 3)Mahony is nominated in the half back (strange yes but he is nominated)

Since 1995 the FOTY has gone to the AI winners on 16/19 occasions. Twice the FOTY went to a player on the losing side of the final and once (Bernard Brogan - A Dub) it went to a player that did not play in that years final (2010, Dublin lost to Cork in SF). Surely JOD will make it 17/20.

Going on the nominations I would expect it to be:
Durcan
Murphy McGee Higgins
O Mahony Crowley McCarthy (the wildcard and need to get Dublins number up)
Moran Gallagher
Connolly O Shea Murphy
O Connor Donaghy O Donoghue
6 Kerry, 4 Donegal, 3 Mayo and 2 Dublin would probably be the way it would be dished out.
James O and Shane Walsh to get the player of the year awards.
