I'm not sure what the hype about Connolly is. In the games against Meath and Wexford he scored 0-1 in each out of a total of 4-45. In the games prior to the semi he scored 2-4 out the 9-90 Dublin had scored. JOD scored that against Cork alone out of Kerry's total of 0-24 (approx 1/5th of Dublin's total).
He had one good half against Donegal scoring 3 points but still missed a sitter of a goal and had a few bad wides in the second half, tagging on another point as well. Donncha Walsh is far more deserving of an All-Star imo.

Any chance BJK getting one for his destruction of Donegal's kickouts ? Disruptive innovation!

1) Brian Kelly {Kerry} 2) Neil McGee {Donegal} 3) Aidan O' Mahony {Kerry} 4) Keith Higgins {Mayo} 5) Paul Murphy {Kerry} - Young Player of the Year 6) Peter Crowley {Kerry} 7) Colm Boyle {Mayo} 8) David Moran {Kerry} 9) Neil Gallagher {Donegal} 10) Paul Flynn {Dublin} 11) Michael Murphy {Donegal} 12) Diarmuid Connolly {Dublin} 13) Cillian O' Connor {Mayo} 14 Kieran Donaghy {Kerry} 15) James O' Donoghue {Kerry} - Player of the Year
This year wasn't the best year for football hence why all of 1-15 is coming from the 4 semi-finalists. Some of the people that could count themselves unlucky to get on my personal team would be Galway's Shane Walsh, Tipperary's Colin O' Riordon, Monaghans Conor McManus

He's that strong on both feet I had to ask a Dublin work colleague which was his natural. Can you tell? He got two outrageous points against Donegal, along with the other basic brilliant ones. Very strong runner and physical. Great link player so in the games where he is not ticking the scoreboard, he's driving holes for other lads to do so.He's improving each year for the last 3 anyway. His temperament is his Achilles and he had a good year in this regard also. I think he's done enough. A good final and Donnacha was a shoe in, but...

the shoe ins - Murphy, Crowley, Moran, O Donoghue.
Marc/Aidan will get one between them.
Donaghy should get one, but could miss out. Donnacha Walsh should get one, but will again miss out.
we will definately get 5, with Donaghy a possibility for a 6th.

Hard to argue with Ciaran Whelans team. Surprised Crowley is being considered a 'certainty' when he played so little championship football and only came back into the team vs Mayo. Colm Boyle had a super year for Mayo.

First 15 includes the best 6 backs in any position and same for forwards. Second 15 is following the real thing's selection process and how it will probably pan out:
Kelly, O'Mahony, McGee, Higgins, Murphy, Crowley, Boyle, Moran, Gallagher, Flynn, O'Shea, Connolly, O'Donoghue, Donaghy, Murphy (Kerry 7, Donegal 3, Mayo 3, Dublin 2)
Durcan, O'Mahony, McGee, Higgins, Murphy, Crowley, Boyle, Moran, Gallagher, Flynn, O'Shea, Connolly, O'Donoghue, Murphy, O'Connor (Kerry 5, Donegal 4, Mayo 4, Dublin 2)

I think it will be something like this
Paul Durcan (wouldn't agree myself) Keith Higgins Neil McGee Aidan O'Mahony Paul Murphy Peter Crowley (maybe , can't think of a better Centre back) Colin O'Riordan (In recognition of Tipperarys extended run in the Championship) David Moran Neil Gallagher Diarmuid Connolly Shane Walsh Paul Flynn James O'Donoghue Michael Murphy Cillian O'Connor
5 Kerry , 4 Donegal , 2 Mayo, 1 Galway , 1 Tipperary
POTY - JO'D

I think Kelly is unlucky in that his best performance of the year was the Clare game which wasnt live on television.
I think if that game had been shown live he would be odds-on for the goalkeeping position.
Also I'd love to see some stats on the number of saves Durkan had to make - I'd be shocked if the number of goal chances Donegal gave up in the championship wasnt by far and away the lowest of any of the top sides.
If he does pick up an All-Star he'll definitely owe the lads in front of him a few pints (and if he's feeling generous the Dublin lads for their poor finishing in the semi-final)

Durcan's gift wrapped opportunity for Star and Kelly dropping the ball in the replayed semi final and his flapping at McBreartys attempt at the death of the final are hardly all-star material. The Monaghan keeper might be the wild card between the sticks.
Aidan, Paul Murphy, David Moran and JOD are certs for Kerry, Kieran should probably get one for turning Kerry's season into an All-Ireland win.
Of course the hacks might enjoy their pound of flesh and give Kerry 4 All-Stars, for no other better reason than they are Kerry. Six will certainly test the goodwill as the hacks sit down. It is perfectly poised!

The McBrearty flap was off a deflection so I would disregard that. What will hurt him is Mayo replay, dropped ball and slow out to O'Connor for their second. Like Kealy he goes to ground too easily, the Galway goal wasn't a good finish. As was mentioned did well against Clare and Cork, great get out over Marc's? head. For the most part kickouts are decent, one brutal one to Paul Murphy high over his head at start of second half that led to Donegal leading for the only time. Has the attributes, consistency required. I know we all saw Shane in the minors and yes was once off game but his two saves in the last 15 minutes were as good as I think I've seen.

Is it not the way that the hacks pick the 45 names and these are then voted on by the GPA intercounty members or have I gone completely mad?

Worth remembering that this was Kelly's first season at intercounty - the fact that he only played 5 games in the league shows just how much progress he has made this season. Not quite the same impact as Paul Murphy had with his dream debut season but not exactly miles off either. Too soon to be talking about Ryan for a bit yet in connection with the seniors.

Correct, and credit to Maher for getting the hand in too or we could be in a very different place right now.

Connolly is the most talanted footballer Dublin has produced that I have seen. I have said before that IMO no Dublin manager right back to Kevin Heffernan has had a talent like him in the squad. Only problem is temprement. Numbers 2 & 3 in no particular order Brian Mullins & Barney Rock.

The love in with Connelly all of a sudden is a typical example of dogma, for me. Seems like it all started on TSG, yet again! Just because somebody else says it, doesn't make it true, one of the main arguments for Connelly being so good, was based on his club form!!! It's a joke, if he's so good, why didn't he deliver when called upon in semi final v Donegal?
The guy is a v.good footballer, but that's it.

Think a little harsh Seamo. He was brilliant in first half against Donegal along with Flynn best on the pitch. He faded in second half for sure, still got arguably the best point of the Championship and kept battling. Hard to keep playing standout football amidst complete systemic failure of his team. The argument could definitely be made and acknowledged that it was then he needed to step up most, but also that he couldn't beat a team like Donegal on his own in those circumstances. He had a great club final but my opinion of him is intercounty based. Slightly separately I asked earlier if folk know if he's left or right footed as he's strong on both sides as I don't think it's very obvious? I do know from speaking with a Dublin St Brigid's man who knows Connolly quite well. His fiery temperament is the only clear weakness I see, it might flare again in the future.

Hardly harsh, I'm just not buying into this notion of greatness. FOTY, definitely not! Most talented Dublin player of past 30 years (as some1 suggested), definitely not! Maybe he can go onto be FOTY in 2015, or by the time he retires be declared best Dublin footballer of past 30 years. But right now he ain't even within an asses roar of either!! lol

A great friend of mine and an ardent GAA follower, now gone to his eternal reward once told me this story concerning All Star awards. 1977 Dublin got the better of Kerry in the All Ireland semi final and then very easily defeated Armagh in the final. There was very little between Kerry and Dublin that year.Dublin got 9 All Star awards from the media know alls who selected the All Stars in those years,Kerry got 2 awards. The following year 1978 Kerry took the 9 All Star team apart in the All Ireland final and defeated Dublin by 17 points. My friend wrote to the Independent GAA reporter and All Star selector stating that seeing that Kerry had defeated the super 9 All Star team by 17 points could Kerry also expect 9,10 or maybe 11 All Stars awards in 1978.The team had walked through the All Ireland. He printed the letter in the Indo and replied that it made sense and maybe Kerry should get 10 awards. Kerry got 6 awards in 1978. My point and its only my opinion is that Kerry rarely get their due so I am expecting 5 awards 6 would be a bonus for US.I would not be giving Connolly an All Star award but going on the point I am trying to make above I think he will get one as I think there is still bias in the selection.

I was only a nipper but have a vague recollection of a bit of a furore when Kevin Moran didn't get one of Dublin's 9 awards, despite the bias! Think they gave it to Moriarty of Armagh at centre back, which caused a tremor or two. All Stars are only a talking shop really, good craic but generate more gossip than Loose Women! For what it's worth, Connolly has never gotten one, he deserves one this year for his performances, just love watching him solo the ball, beautiful mover. Someone made the point that nobody goes to see the Legion club games but in fairness Connolly gave a tour de force in the All Ireland Club final, freely available on TG4 I believe. Scored a goal from heaven, this is what Colm O'Rourke is on about. He also got one v St. Sylvesters recently in club champo, unbelievable stuff if anyone wants to check it out on Youtube (don't have the link, too lazy). Donnacha Walsh a bit unlucky that he's in direct competition with Flynn, who is a savage player. Cannot believe Durkan will get one, 'mare of a final should rule him out. Not only the goal but the one that hopped over his head that just missed the post. Plus his kickouts after Donaghy's goal went to pot. No problem with Donaghy getting one, influenced the result of the semi hugely, and the final. Which reminds me, not convinced on the Eamon Fitz love in as the best manager ever, Donaghy sub was a last chance saloon effort in the semi, 5 down with 4 minutes to go. That's not astute management, that's just a plain gamble...
