Prior to the 2012 final, Joe Brolly cast serious aspersions on Mayo and it did them no favours in the final. James Horan was upset over it.
The Sunday Game next sunday will preview the football final and the panellists are Brolly and McStay!!

Ref won’t influence Fitzmaurice tactics Share on facebook 0 Share on twitter 0 From today's Examiner:
Monday, September 08, 2014
By Eoghan Cormican Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice insists the Kingdom’s tactics for Sunday week’s All-Ireland football decider will not be influenced by the selection of match officials.
The referee for the game will be announced next Monday, with Laois’ Eddie Kinsella and Marty Duffy of Sligo the front-runners to take charge. Duffy was in the middle when Kerry last lifted the Sam Maguire back in 2009.
“No, not really,” said Fitzmaurice when quizzed if the choice of referee would dictate their style of play. “All referees have a style. Some might leave it go more than others. Others might be a bit fussier. We are still trying to play the game the same way.
“You might be conscious a certain referee will have a pet hate, a technical foul in particular they might focus in on. I don’t think there is that much of a difference between the top referees.”
While again ruling out Colm Cooper’s availability for the clash with Donegal, the manager believes the attacker has an important role to play at training over the next fortnight.
“He hasn’t been around this week. He was around Tuesday night. He was working in Dublin on Thursday and Saturday. He will be back down to us Tuesday night. He has been doing the warm-ups with us. If we needed someone to kick ball in to a conditioned game, he has been doing that. He is very vocal around the place in terms of helping lads. He will have the same role, an important role. While of course because of his injury he is no longer captain, he is still our captain in a way.”
Fitzmaurice reported a clean bill of health for the final and is confident the clash of colours will not prove overly troublesome.
“I think the only issue is if you are playing into the Hill 16 end when it will be all green and gold on the day and you are looking in trying to pick out a player. It is a small issue, hopefully it won’t cause trouble.”
He added: “There is nothing major injury wise. The lads who have been struggling the last couple of weeks have been making good progress. Darran O’Sullivan will be back full training Tuesday night. Stephen O’Brien returned to full training on Saturday. Thankfully there isn’t much of an injury update. For an All-Ireland final all bets are off. Lads that are 90, 95% will be pushing themselves through the pain barrier.”

That is pettiness on the part of McGuinness and I suppose as he falls for that himself he thinks others do likewise. He rises to the bait and is a media man's dream. Maybe it is an unfortunate aspect of soccer that is accompanying the other things he brings from that code. Remember Jimmy lost at least an All Ireland by over reacting to Cassidy's media foray; nobody would have read the book until Jimmy drew attention to it, I never meta anyone who still read it as there was nothing to it. Cassidy would have made a big difference and just look at the contrast in how O'Dwyer would have handled such juvenile carry-on, 'ah Kevin can you do another 30 laps there to sap all that extra energy you have for writing', and at no 29 he'd say, 'that's 19, now only 11 to go'. That is an amazing cure for wayward soldiers. Kerry will walk the talk and others will have all year long to continue to talk the talk.

That was James Horan though, I find Mayo and Donegal prone to media talk, Kerry people couldn't care what the mouth's are, well, mouthing off, and that goes back a long way. I mean do any of us worry what anyone says, McGuinness talks of focus yet he feels insulted when Spillane & Co 'offend'. Jimmy needs to focus himself as games are won on the field, not on TV.

Still he is a great manager and history will be kind to him; the culture change he brought about in a short few years was amazing and did he meet with some resistance. He was rejected as a management candidate initially and was known as 'the laddo of the Powerpoint presentations' and which referred to his interview meeting with traditionalists who probably thought he lacked the metal. I suppose every county has it's own idiocracies, E.g. Donegal is 60%+ soccer and much of which stems from the indelible links between the West Donegal and Celtic. I have met some really great GAA people here and my favourites are the more seasoned ones; boy but do they know their football, and they are so sporting in a deep if understated way. What is also unique is that there are significant numbers of Kerry fans among them and maybe this built up during their own quieter years. It might surprise some at home but there is an amazing respect for Kerry right across Ulster and it can be very humbling, true sportsmanship, you'd be delighted to mix with them and it does the soul a world of good.

To be fair to him he has instilled wonderful belief in the players in his system, if we can get an early goal it will rattle that belief, remember in 2012 when we started to come back into it in the last ten minutes they were panicking big time and were fortunate to hold on in the end. Problem now is that they have grown as a team and as we saw against the Dubs they can play ball outside of the system they are so loyal to. In the final of 2012 when they went so far ahead they started to showboat and decided to show off their footballing skills, it was laughable how bad they were at all the basic shills and kept giving away the ball to Mayo who came back into the game as a result. They are now much improved in kick passing and in other elements of their game. Jimmy had a go at the Dubs in relation to their powerful financial set up and support system in the hope he would get inside their heads,, thing is that despite his efforts if Connolly had stuck that goal it was lights out for the "I Schuppose" crew from the hills. I think we can take them despite they being the favourites of most pundits, Kerry under the radar is a dangerous animal.

We are in 5 of his top 10 games of all time. 1.The Offaly 82 5 in a row game is his favorite game of all time. Is this truly the best game of all time, no hope only Offaly people or people that don't like Kerry would say this. There is at least half a dozen games in recent years a neutral fan would put above that game. Obviously it was dramatic and was great for a neutral to see an under dog winning and stopping the mighty Kerry claim 5 in a row but if we had to be honest it could not be rated as the best game off all time. I know he was manager as only a person who got severe satisfaction out of it would say that. 2. Mayo last week is his number 2 game of all time, he goes on to say it had everything but did put his dig in regarding poor decision making by the ref and controversial decisions "grim forebodings by experts". While I do agree here I am only making that point that he had to get his dig in. 3. His 5th favorite was Kerry V Cork in 76 munster final, I quote " Cork had a great team in those times and would have won but for two bizarre decisions by referee John Moloney and his umpires" 4. His 6th favorite was when Monaghan kicked a last minute kick against us in 85 to draw the game. I quote "There was only a handful of Kerry fans there for what was meant to be a formality but Monaghan thwarted many of the Kerry superstars" 5. His 10th favorite was when the Dubs beat us last year. I don't disagree that any of these matches were classics my point is of the 5 games he picked with Kerry involved we won 2 but he states that they had controversial referee decisions. He never says Kerry deserved to win. The rest bar the draw were heart ache games for Kerry. Out of all the Classics Kerry played down through the years, he could not find one that we won without a controversial decision that helped us claim a victory. But wait for it the games we lost and drew in his list he mentions no controversial decision in those games. Its a top 10 list from a man that obviously does not like Kerry. Guys who are given the freedom to write in big news papers should be neutral in my opinion or at least not so negative. While he may be right in everything he says my point is that he comes across as very anti Kerry.

Kerry haven't converted a long distance dead ball since the Cork game. Off the top of my head Kerry have missed 4/4 45s/long range placed balls, Moran missing 3 and Buckley missing 1.
Donegal will know this and may attempt systematic fouling outside the 45 to break any attacking momentum. Moran will have to have the shooting boots on if Sheehan doesn't feature.

While he may be right in everything he says my point is that he comes across as very anti Kerry. He does emphasise that '82 was 'his' as opposed to 'the' best game on that period and I have oft heard that Offaly were not given credit as it was seen as a Kerry flop. I'd agree though this untypically light weight article by Eugene completely ignored the injustices inflicted upon Kerry that cost us Sam. Further analysis of the drawn Mayo game concluded that we were also wronged a lot but Kerry folk just don't go there. And Kevin McStay defended the ref on the Kerry penalty he was asked about. Eugene was right in that say Maher's punch of the ball for a free wasn't in the rules but it allowed the play to go on and which wasn't favouring anyone, 'controversial'. Maybe we focus too much on refs and in fairness do they set out to favour anyone, well apart from knocking down the odd AI final to The Dubs?; Lester challenged the GAA president at Dublin's hotel that evening and the response did nothing if only to remove any doubt about the existence of such a scandalous policy. Dublin have enough advantages besides having a ref on the payroll via unofficial GAA policy to compete against other codes in a citu. Eugene also qualifies his collection in that he says it is biased towards more recent games.

I thought he was poor enough in the game against Galway in a game that didn't need a whole lot of reffing. But at least we have had him in the championship already this season and Marty Duffy got overlooked who did the quarter final in 2012.

Like with Kilkenny in the hurling, if we stop Donegal scoring goals we win. I respect McGuinness greatly but I watched the second half against of Dublin match last night in forensic mode and the Dubs were way off the pace, granted Donegal had considerable contribution to putting them there. Dublin's defence was a complete mess, Michael Fitzsimons in particular had a nightmare. He completely 'forgot' about Ryan McHugh for the second goal, so used to having not do any defending. Dublin still missed a lot of chances playing toilet.
I feel bullish, the Mayo game was almost worth an All-Ireland in value of experience and psychological fortitude. Mayo are a really good team, no question. I have started giving Betfair some money. 13/8 is too generous and I find insulting odds, but positively insulting if that makes any sense, we can but gain in motivation and coin.

Well spotted fitzwop and that is good betting sense, they should be evens and it is silly Dublin money on Donegal, I.e. 'smart' Dubs! McFadden can drop the chin if things don't go his way but Murphy is the one who has to be marked, just like they stop lads playing. He has been caught fooling the ref by holding the opponents hand and as we all know he is as strong as a horse. They will also try to mark James out of the game and that will be fun as the score board starts rolling. I also agree with fitzwop on Mayo, they were the best team left by a long way, that is bar ourselves and we were the unknown quantity. You also strike the right chord on Dublin being poor as opposed to Donegal being exceptional. Dublin fooled all of us, although seasoned veterans repeatedly insisted that 'they have never been tested'. Both teams will now improve and it is the proverbial case as to who wants it the most and who has the class to deliver. We win on the latter and the former is a given, Sam mór agus beag are both coming home to the mountains and lakes, not the hills.

Hey lads, any word on your ticket allocation for the final, looks like we are getting a very similar allocaton to 2012, despite our minors being involved this time round as well.
Yes it is very good news that marty duffy didnt get the game. He is a disaster. Kinsella is pretty good, he reffed the tyrone monaghan game this year, the one where there was controversy about extra allocated time not played. Not his fault. So if either team finds themselves deep into injury time and 2 points down, go for goal!

Even if there was an extra 30 seconds, what were the odds that Mayo would actually get near the goals again to even kick for a point? That was unlikely given Dublins well-rehearsed kick out strategy (and deliberate fouling - which all teams would do in that scenario anyway). O'Connor's free should have been blasted or floated in. Anything is possible with that many bodies in front of goal.

I wouldn't be overly confident about it, but the games against Mayo certainly gives us reason to be optimistic. This team proved they have the steel, physical and mental, to win out tight games, something that we have no associated with Kerry teams over recent times.
Those two games will have brought us on no end, and far more so than the Dublin game would have brought Donegal on, imo. However I still think it's 50/50. We are not without our problems, especially in the FB line where we have leaked a lot of goals. Also, we may find goals hard to come by against Donegal because of how they defend that area so massive patience will be required. If our shooting is anything like it was against Mayo in Limerick then we can forget about it.

Irish Independent has article about Donegal heading away for five days. I suppose 'twould be too much to hope that they'll go quare & 'go on the tear'. Article below...
Donegal to splash out on luxury Lough Erne 'final camp' McGuinness takes squad to Lough Erne resort for five-day fine-tuning of All-Ireland preparation Declan Bogue Published 09/09/2014 | 02:30
Donegal are leaving no stone unturned with their All-Ireland final preparations with another five-day training camp planned for this week.
Arrangements have been made to stay for five nights at the exclusive Lough Erne Golf Resort in neighbouring Fermanagh, just two weeks after a similar camp in Johnstown House, Enfield, Co Meath prior to the All-Ireland semi-final win over Dublin where, it's understood, they got through much of their tactical planning. With a party of over 40 players and backroom staff, the costs could be in the region of €20,000 but Donegal are known to have significant backers, at home and overseas, who have helped them cover the costs of similar ventures.
Only last week three of their Dublin-based players travelled to training in Ballybofey by helicopter.
It is a measure of the professional nature of their preparations that Donegal have been able to embark on such a camp once again. Earlier this year, the squad and management took in a week of warm-weather training in Portugal prior to the Division 2 league final. The Lough Erne venue has no football fields available to Donegal, but they could host their training sessions in local club facilities. Located a few miles outside Enniskillen towards the Donegal border, the resort is a high-end venue that hosted the G8 summit last summer. This latest trip of Donegal will come as a surprise, given the length of time Donegal have spent 'in camp' this season. Kerry were also in Portugal, visiting the Amendoeira Golf Resort at the same time and have held four warm-weather training camps there since 2010. They regularly travel to the Fota Island resort outside Cork on the weekend before a major game.
At their weekend pre-All-Ireland final press event, full-back Neil McGee was promoting the benefits of going into camp prior to big games. "You are more or less living with the team, getting proper recovery and eating the right foods. You nail it perfectly," said the defender. Asked about the benefit of the five intensive days of preparation for the Dublin match in Johnstown House, McGee answered: "There's been a lot made about the five days, but we could prepare like that for every game, the Dubs are no exception. Five days was maybe a day or two extra, but we seen it as a massive task, it was a task we knew we could do, but we had to have the right work done." "We can only prepare how we can prepare. We can't factor in what they are going to do. We can just prepare our own team, whatever happens during the game we have to adapt and be ready for every scenario.
"We will get away now this week and boys will get assigned to who they will keep tabs on and whatnot. It gives us a while to prepare for it and a while to study for it." The Gweedore clubman admits he thrives in that environment, having been part of the International Rules travelling squad. "It is enjoyable," he said and he added: "If you have to find any quality at all, you will find it in those few days. When you have a bit of extra work to do, that's when you can do it, or if you need a wee break, it's ideal."

Yeah I agree, our shooting was alarmingly poor in the first 20mins or so. Also every player in the forwards must ensure that the player in the best position gets the ball. We simply have to play the percentages as Donegal will not afford us that many chances. The Dubs fluffed some great chances in the second half but Donegal were well ahead at that stage and had climbed out of the trenches as they could smell the blood in the water. If it's tight Sunday week they well not loosen the System so every chance will count..
