Ah come off it - Griffin was destroyed as he was against Denis Glennon against Westmeath in the 1st half. How can you say he did ok when a man kicked 6 points from play off him. He turned him inside out every time he got the ball. Griffin was just miles off him. I agree we have to persist with him at full back but on Sunday he got the proverbial roasting. He never tried anything other than play Hurley from behind - try playing him from the front - go shoulder to shoulder - start a scuffle to put him off his game. For definite we have problems further out the field and our full back line are getting roasted because of this. No matter how good a full back line any team has - if the forward line get the quality of ball that the Cork full forward line got on Sunday the full back line are on a hiding to nothing. The same thing was happening against Tyrone in the 1st half when McCurry was getting quality ball. We might need longer than 11 weeks to fix the problems highlighted on Sunday.

I don't know what you're reading but I didn't, nor did anyone else, say that Griffin did ok. Nobody has denied he was reddened but he got zero protection from the rest out the field. Give me handy ball like the Cork forwards got and I'd destroy Griffin, Marc or whoever else myself FFS! Marc Sé has been consistently well beaten during the last 2 or 3 years but fellas refuse to acknowledge that. It's easier to slate the new, young fella. Griffin is more suited to play out the field but currently he is our only option for full-back in my opinion. Griffin did get to grips with Glennon as the first half went on in Mullingar because he decided to play him from the front.

No point in reading too much into the game. With division 1 status secured this was always going to be "a much about nothing" type of a game from a Kerry perspective once Derry in-affect threw their tie with Mayo. It made good business sense not to have Kerry involved in the playoffs. I'd take Kerry's performance with a grain of salt.
Plenty of positives from the league with a host of young players coming on stream that can do a job when the game becomes more structured in the championship. However a lot will depend on what form the returning established players will bring to the table in 3-4 months time.
Assuming all players reach full and top form a summer team "might" read something along the lines of
An Other
Murphy, Griffin, Enright,
Crowley, Fitz, Young,
Maher, Sheehan,
Declan, Moran, Walsh,
O'Donoghue, Geaney, Donaghy
With Marc to dislodge one of the defenders and Darren to dislodge one of the forwards if both regain form based on what they are doing in training, if up to speed.
With Colm, Tomas and Paul gone from last years semi final this represents a substantial loss in know how for the big Croke Park autumn days. Kerry will have to be very good to pick pocket this Cork team in the Munster Final and stay in the Munster Connaught side of the draw.
With Dublin a little bit ropey at the moment you would have to give Dublin, Mayo and Donegal equal billing to collect Sam, followed by Cork, then Kerry, Tyrone and Monaghan as a dangerous opponent to meet. It is very hard to see Sam go walkabout outside of the teams listed above.
The NFL has been pretty up and down in terms of judging potential form with no clear standout team. Kerry might have taken a point from Dublin and beaten Derry but what would that have told us, does it really matter at the end of day that they are not in the playoffs?
Form has been so scattered that it not possible to predict who will win the league this year. On an aside, Kerry seem to lack hard core pace across this transitional team. I suppose the term "transitional" is used for good reason. It would take a fair amount of imagination to see Kerry claiming Sam in September on leaving Stacks Park last Sunday, Dublin's to win or Mayo to finally step up to the plate and stop cackling like turkeys in a Christmas shed.
Sorry to see Johnny Doyle go, the last remaining link from the Micko era, probably more of a symptom of the visionary outcome of the 30 versus 29 bright sparks than anything else, age aside.
Now back to 11 weeks of hibernation, I'd love to know what it will cost the Kerry county board to manage the team in this window, banana and nuts stuff. I see it is suggested that Croker will negotiate with Sky to bring cheap air to view to the clubs. White sponsored chocolate bars will be in the offering, why take a treat away from the people as is suggested in today's media, help us, it brings a whole new meaning to the Milky Bar kid.

White sponsored chocolate bars will be in the offering, why take a treat away from the people as is suggested in today's media, help us, it brings a whole new meaning to the Milky Bar kid. Very good summary of the situation, Kerrygold. Here's what E Fitz had to say :- “I mean, when we saw the team that Derry picked, we figured that regardless of whether we won or lost, we wouldn’t get into the semi-finals. But the fact that we’d won three games in a row, we wanted to keep that going.
“We wanted to have momentum going forward getting ready for the championship. And you know, it’s Cork, it’s at home. We lost two out of three of our home games this year which is a disappointment.”
Fitzmaurice believes the performance against Cork indicated Kerry require more championship preparations than he anticipated. “This morning if you asked me about the gap, I would have been giving out about it. I think I’m happy to have it now because we’ve a lot to work on.
“It does seem a bit strange, alright, that we’ve played 10 competitive games so far in the first three months of the year. If you go the whole way, you’ve five for the rest of the year.
“But we’ve a lot to work on, we need the gap, we wouldn’t want to be playing championship in a week or two’s time now. We’re going to Portugal Thursday week and after that, we’ll train twice a week, Tuesday, Thursday. The lads will have club games right up to the week of the Clare/Waterford game.”
FitzMaurice is a straight talker and he's not looking for excuses but the first paragraph gives us an insight into Kerry's state of mind IMO. Contrast this to last season when Cork had nothing to play for and Kerry needed the win. FitzMaurice will now be able to work hard on areas of weakness. Any league campaign where you avoid relegation and get 3/4 players of IC std is a success. Kerry got Kelly, Murphy, O Brien and Geaney - all of whom will have long IC careers IMO. The form of JOD is another huge plus. Your predictions on the AI winners are also spot on - I can't see beyond Dublin, Mayo and Donegal - this year will be too soon for Cork and Kerry but both will challenge strongly in 2015. Final 2 points - (1) Is Marc O Se on the decline - he really struggled against Colm O Driscoll - a complete novice starting his first IC game AFAIK - A few years ago, Marc would have eaten him alive. He looked fit but did pick up an injury. Do you think going back to players like Donaghy is sensible ? - Cork cleared the decks and it seems to have worked for them.

I think the truth lies somewhere in Cork are not that good and Kerry are not that bad. Would certainly expect Mark Griffin to improve after getting a full League campaign under his belt.Crowley Fionn Marc and Murphy along with Enright will all be sharper later on. Its a pity we couldn't get game time into Killian Young and more time for Pa Kilkenny but they are also sure to be there or there abouts . One of my old favourites Aidan O Mahony might just have another championship in him.
For me midfield is where we need major improvement. I think having two big men like Maher and Moran fit and flying now would be worrying because they would find it a lot harder to maintain it. These two boys need to be built up slowly towards a Munster Final and then beyond. I think Star would be a viable option here too if we can get him back fit and HUNGRY. His leadership qualities could prove invaluable in the heat of battle. Brian Sheehan also is someone who needs to be brought along slowly.
For me Johnny Buckley will have to be given a go in the HF line or nowhere. His confidence is low after the performance in last yrs semi final. But if we can just get the lad to focus on the good things he has done in the jersey then he could be a viable option. He is also a good man to take a score from 35/40 yards.
I must say I have been hugely impressed with our inside line. O Brien and James O will do damage this year if they get the ball in right.
My idea of a starting 15 for the championship would be
Kelly
Murphy Griffin Enright
Crowley Fitzgerald Killian
Maher Moran
Walsh Dec Sullivan Buckley
O Brien Geaney O Donoghue.
I take it Darren is on the injured list again. Kealy Donaghy Sheehan Lyne Casey Keane O Sé Kilkenny Sherwood are all players capable of making an impact off the bench. I think it is now in the hands of the management to have these boys primed and ready. The talent is there....

I take it Darren is on the injured list again. from the homepage... "Darran O Sullivan - Injury Update Tuesday April 8th 2014 Darran O'Sullivan suffered a hamstring tear during the AFL game with Cork on Sunday last. Intense treatment has begun and an update will be posted in due course"

From the league 1) More questions than answers about Mark Griffin. Sundays reddening from Hurley was only 1 game where he has been fully destroyed but overall during the league his opposing full forward has had a share of scores off of him. If he starts against good opposition there will be 4/5 points got off him. can Kerry afford that is the question
2) Kerrys corner backs good enough against the top 3/4 teams. NO in my opinion
3) Mark O Shea - prob will have to go back to corner back or full back. Not been at his best in the league at wing back and a better marker than what we have currently in the corner.
4) Sheehan should be flogged to get himself in shape for championship - then pick either Moran/Maher to partner him. Kerry need a good performing Sheehan to stand a chance of winning the AI.
5)kerry really need Declan on the 40 - he can get a breather inside at times with switching with Darren perhaps. Walsh, Declan, Casey O Donoghue,Darren,O Brien
these would be my 6 starting forwards at the moment. Obviuosly 1 or 2 could change as they are about 2 starters from those 6 about even par with another 2/3 subsitute forwards. Think BJ keane will be best to bring in off the bench and should offer a good impact along with P Geaney.
Also then have the option of Donaghy or maybe Sheehan/Moran in around full forward too

"Darran O Sullivan - Injury Update Tuesday April 8th 2014 Darran O'Sullivan suffered a hamstring tear during the AFL game with Cork on Sunday last. He's looking at 6 weeks out IMO. Big battle to be fit for the Munster Championship given that he hadn't recovered full fitness before his latest injury. He's the kind of player that has to be very careful to avoid a repeat in that he has explosive pace and that causes maximum strain to all leg muscles. WRT Sunday's game - I was surprised that none of the Kerry U21 side made the panel for that game - Cork have 4 u21's in their squad (per Cork GAA Website) and Dublin have a few involved too. It gives all the young lads encouragement to see a few make the step up. As I've said already, I wouldn't get too concerned over Sunday's game but it should be acknowledged that Cork had 3 defenders getting their 1st starts after hip surgery (all 3) and long lay-offs (Kelly, O Sullivan, Cahalane) and Kelly is very inexperienced in defence. In these circumstances Kerry's attack did badly even allowing for the fact that MF did not provide enough possession.

It was me Timmy who suggested he wasn't too bad and he definitely won a number of clashes between the two of them. Hurley however was white hot on the day. The notion of marking a forward from the front is alien to me, especially one in the FF line. Sure if you're tuned in, and have play anticipation you get a great headstart, but getting it wrong or hesitation, means Kelly is heading for back stretches in the warm down. You are continuously for moments blind to the decision making and movement of the forward. I would be genuinely interested in hearing folks pros and cons on marking from the front, I think I have some ignorance on this one. Btw to all, to the question I posed in my last post, nobody identified well didn't post it, any player in the country who would have handled Hurley on Sunday and can support the nomination with evidence as to why. Dennis Glennon is a very decent forward too, near end of his days, playing with a very poor side. I think we're not crediting the opposition player sufficiently when appraising Griffin. He has all the attributes for the position but is serving a tough apprenticeship. I think Aidan doesn't have the legs now for a FF with any pace.As most have also noted we have other fish for frying out the field in more than one pan too unfortunately. A lot of reference was made to Cork's superior fitness, I'm struggling to buy that. Folks might have been mistaking fitness for speed, Cork have more players with speed than we do. Nowhere more evident than in the middle. Hopefully an off day with mental attitude and application as explanation can close those running gaps by the Championship. I would be positive on that as this was not a factor brutally exposed in other games. It's still a problem though, just hoping we can offset it with our strong suits.

Its painful to read posts saying that Enright/Griffin/blah blah blah were roasted when any back would been given that Kerry were wiped out in the middle third in the second half.
When a side is losing midfield for a spell then it has to be every man back to cover the full back line till a stranglehold in regained in the middle.
Marc was given the run around too against Kildare but he stood in front of his man at the start of the second half. It was interesting to watch. The Kildare man making the delivery had to kick it to the corner flag and when Brophy collected the ball and turned around all of Kerrys backs had funnelled back.
I thought that Kerry did well in the first half and the goal before half time was a killer. Marc gave the ball away at a crucial stage and the goal came from that. Marc is either off form or in decline.
Kerry will be able to put out a formidable 15 and will beat most teams. However, its the oppositions 5 subs in the final 20 minutes that will be the problem.
Clearly Sheehan/Maher/ Moran/Donaghy plus a few breaking ball merchants have to get us 60% of possession in the middle....otherwise we have no chance.
It has been a good league for Kerry. I would have traded relegation in return for finding 4 new players. I think that Brian Kelly, Paul Murphy, Stephen OBrien and Paul Geaney have been great finds.
By the way, Eamonn should look at the sigerson cup final tape and see how Paul Geaney turned the tide for UCC when drafted out into the midfield area. He should have brought him out there last Sunday in my opinion.

Marc is 34 this month with big milage on the clock - You would expect the O Se determination to carry him through this season but this will prob be his last. Donaghy has always made an impact in brief cameo's at MF and this could be a big asset. Good point about Geaney - E FitzM would have seen the Sigerson Final on TV - surprising he didn't give it a go - but not many good decisions made on Sunday

Jesus lads could ye be any quicker with the Marc O Se obituaries!!!!
Maybe he's taking tips off the brother (Tomas) about pacing yourself and saving your best for the business end of the championship, like Tomas has been doing for numerous years. Marc's an O Se, it's all about championship; he'd be a foolish 34 year old to be giving it his very best in April!!!!
Plus lets not forget that Declan O Sullivan is on an extended break from intercounty duty, if Declan is allowed that then we should at least allow Marc a little bit of slack.

Fair point, Seamo - I stand chastised. Marc may have not been at his best last Sunday but it's far too early to be suggesting he's in decline. I've a feeling that I'll be tucking into some humble pie before the season is over.

Dont Foul has run the numbers on the game. dontfoul.wordpress.com/2014/04/10/kerry-v-cork-2014-league/Backs up what a lot of people here are saying - Kerry didn't have enough possession, Cork's forwards were on red hot form. The stats on kickouts are a worry - the fact that Kerry had 5 more kickouts yet Cork managed to create 3 more shots says it all about how we used our kickouts and how we did at midfield and in terms of breaking ball. Only 1 short kickout(the last) indicates that either 1)we are holding off on a proper kickout strategy until Championhsip or 2) Eamonn & co we don't have a clue what they're doing. Deadballs - JOD - 2 from 3 [the one he missed was almost a sideline ball) ; P Geaney 2 from 2 ; B Sheehan 1 from 2 (can't remember what he missed, presume it was a 45) - overall it doesn't lend much evidence on the side of the argument that Sheehan is worth a place on the 15 for deadballs. I'm worried about our half-forward line especially as regards the scoring threat. Our form in the league was very poor in terms of our half-forward line scoring from play. In all 5 Championship games last year the half-forward line was Paul, Colm and Donnacha. They scored 2-20 in 5 Championship games from play between the 3 of them. Paul and Colm won't be in the reckoning, so you is going to step up? so far in the league no-one has stepped up for the half-forward line and as a result I've been assuming that the half-forward line would be Darran, Declan and Donnacha. However there are 1 very big question and 2 nagging small one there - Darran's injury, especially on the back of his very limited game time in the league trying to get over surgery has to be a big worry, especially given the lack of speed around the centre of the field and then 2 lesser worries in terms of Declan's lack of game time and Donnacha's form which has mixed (I'm not sure he hasn't been struggling with a knock/injury/some sort of fitness problem when you look at the fact that he played all 7 games but was subbed in all of them (and even earlier than usual in a few)) Overall my worry is that it's a hell of a lot easier for an opposition defence if they can look at our team and simply say if we stop there full-forward line getting ball we will beat them, that if the side also have to worry about half-forwards as a serious goal and point threat. Ask yourself if you were an opposition manager and were setting up your team to play Kerry what would be your tactics?

You are correct Givehimtheball - The HF line has been average at best during the league and this was evident again last Sunday. Maybe Donncha isn't 100% but he's been one of the most consistent performers for ages now and he'll probably be 100% for c/ship. Declan is playing for his club and won an AI interfirm with Liebherr - he'll benefit from the IC break and is likely to be as good as ever by c/ship. Darran's hamstring tear on top of the hip problem is a worry but with all due respect to Clare or Waterford - the big game is the Munster Final on 6th July - that's nearly 3 months from the date of injury - Cian O Neill will surely hae him right. A HF line of the 2 O Sullivans and D Walsh would be the envy of most sides. I see the problems in defence.
