Lads, did Kerrigan actually get a touch on that ball?? He scored a goal and two points from play. Yes, he did, but I think its the "goal" that aitelads2 is on about. I thought it went straight into the net without a touch from Kerrigan. If it did then it should have been disallowed as a goal straight from a handpass. Mind you, the fellow in the ground with the best view would have been the goal umpire on the Hogan stand side of the posts and he didn't hesitate about putting up the green flag. But then again, would an umpire be even on the lookout for that, what with checking for square balls and everything else?

Didn't the keeper get a touch anyway so it wouldn't have mattered if Kerrigan touched it

Kerrigan got a touch to it alright.

Kerrigan clearly got a touch & the keeper got a touch as well. It wasn't a handpass as Kerrigan never had it in his hand, but was it still a legit goal given that it came to Kerrigan from a handpass, and he didn't punch it to the net, just flicked it with his hand?
This could be a fascinating semi-final, Mayo have a very good momentum now going into it, must have got huge belief from beating Cork the first time in 700 years, plus they will still be written off. That makes them a really dangerous team. Any doubts Kerry might have about themselves could well be tested to the full, if Mayo produce again. This championship is starting to take on a real life of its own, where alot of expectations are being thrown out the window. A Mayo All-I win is a distinct possibility now. They will have no fear anyway of Tyrone, Donegal or Dublin.

Mayo are always dangerous when written off. Different think though doing it as favourites. They won't be favourites, they will still be written off by most, as most on here seem to be doing, and that's those with with most to lose. Also I was impressed with reports about how low-key the Mayo response was to beating Cork, none of the wild celebrations of winning their last few semi-finals, or beating Tyrone in the 2004 quarter final was it? This is an up and coming Mayo team, written off, just had an historic win, playing a Kerry team which is in some transition, and won't have had a serious game in two months, very volatile situation.

Mayo won't go in as favourites but unfortunately for them all the attention is now on them. All the talk coming up to the semi final will focus on Mayo's resurgence under Horan and their fantastic win over Cork. The media will give little regard to Kerry coming into the game as Mayo are simply the better story. That's not the same as saying they will make Mayo favourites but the focus will be on them. This inevitably brings it's own hype whether they like it or not. Kerry will come in nice and quiet to the match which suits us down to the ground.

So what suggestions do people have to sort out the obvious problems we have in our backs. Eoin Brosnan is a great man to go forward, but he is clearly not near as comfortable going the other way. Mayo's midfield is a serious outfit (albeit a bit naive) and if they dominate our lads then we could be in serious trouble. Teams that run at us will put us in trouble, and Mayo will run at us all day.
I do think we'll have to much for Mayo, but lets not pretend that we're close to the finished article.

It would be a big call, but I would go for the backs as follows: Kealy Enright Marc Tom Sull Tomas Killian AOM
Killlian is the ideal man to match Dillion! Tom Sull on Freeman Marc on Moran if he comes into full forward line, Tomas if out on wing!
I actually think we should give our midfiled a bit of credit for what they have done so far. Totally new partneship and they are holding their own there.

Mayo's half forward line has loads of pace and Brosnan has that in spades. As for our midfield; while I agree that they have done well so far I would not be getting carried away. They were in trouble against Cork in the second half and that Limerick midfield was second rate.

Good points by Ardfert Narrie. Lets not forget that Tomas and Paul Galvin come into the equation when discussing midfield. Mayo were strong in midfield against Cork but with Tomas and Paul sharpening up we should be improving on the breaks. Mayo midfielders had 10 turnovers against Cork. That wont do against us. If Mayo do as well in midfield as they did against Cork we could be in trouble. We need to improve on the Limerick game but I think we will.

Mayo look good around the middle, but I still think they are a little wet behind the ears. I found myself shouting at Aidan Ó Sé on several occassions when he decided to take the ball into tackles. He gave away an amount of ball against Cork.

It would be toss up between AOM and Brossy, but i do think better balance is in team if Enright is in corner!
Aiden O Se "dilly daddied" on the ball way too much, Galvin and co. will eat that up hopefully!

why on earth would/should Kerry go adjusting their team to do match ups with the opposition? Sign of weakness.
Leave well enough alone.

Arthur - everygame, Kerry does matchups - its not just stand in your position and see what forward comes your way!

I believe Jack will leave well enough alone at this stage - if anything, I hope he doesn't hesitate to make changes if things are not going our way...
Going forward in this season has shown that our bench is slightly stronger than it may have been in the past - Enright, Bohane, Leary, JOD to come on .... my only fear is the midfield - if Maher and Sheehan can't make a go of it there - I don't believe we have a strong fall back -
Scanlon and Quirke are not getting it done this year and don't have the match time to make up for lost time - I guess Donaghy may be pulled into the mix since we should have enough in the half and full forward line
Interesting days ahead - I wonder if they can get any team now to play them in a challenge match or will it be A vs B at this stage....

Mayo devoured Cork in the middle third on the breaking ball and through primary ball from the OShea brothers. Having said that, Cork were away with the Fairies, couldn't compete in the middle third, could not breakdown Mayo's defence and folded the tent very early. When push came to shove the Cork players did not want to know about it. Cork's soft goals against Down the previous week masked over the obvious cracks, the goals were too easy.

It's a pity o mahoney isn't in the running for the centre back spot. In his prime he was the best centre back in the country. He could go on an attacking run like brossy and still be a defensive lynchpin. I think he's coming back into form but i dont know if we'll ever see an 06 all ireland type performance from him again.

It will come down to the middle third and especially Tomas and Paul. If these two play well and win their usual quota of breaking ball, I would expect that we should have enough.
The one advantage we should have over Cork is that Cork were missing key forwards. I would expect us to score a lot more than 2-6 if we had the possession Cork had.

As Kerrygold pointed out.. Mayo cleaned Cork to almost everytbreaking ball in the middle third. I've a feeling both Donncha and Paul will play a pivotal roll in the game competing for the dirty ball.

The concern I have is the fact that so far in the championship we have sauntered along. With the exception of a serious 30 minutes in the Munster final (notwithstanding that we could have been in arrears by a goal and a couple of points in the opening 5) we have simply strolled to this stage. Of course we can only play what's in front of us. Have we ever had a handier run?
I presume that the boys will be gunning for this one. I hope we aren't flat coming out of the blocks. Mayo will cause us problems, of that there is no doubt. I think we have more than enough ammunition for this challenge but have we got the edge for battle?

If we can get any sort of decent ball into our full forward line against Mayo you would have to expect kerry to win by five our six points. Our major worry obviously is with Darran O'Sullivan's injury who has been our best player this year and has scored three of our five championship goals so far this year and when we met Mayo in the league they really struggled with his pace.

Interesting statistic from yesterdays Indo....Mayo have conceded a total of 4 pts in the combined duration of the second halves of their last 3 matches...Cork, Roscommon, Galway....thats an average of 1.33pts per second half! You can say what you like about the weakness of the Cork forward line last Sunday, but that type of statistic doesn't happen by accident. As others have suggested, high diagonal ball into the full-forward line looks like a good route. The Mayo half-back line appears to do a lot of 'mopping up'...

Trevor Mortimer did a great shadowing job on Paddy Kelly, better than Killian. Not that Kelly didn't get his hands on ball, but he was usually going laterally or even backwards, and Cork were too short of forwards not to need a big game from him. He may be detailed for Declan, as Darran would be too quick for him (plenty interchanges between players and lines should be the order of the day to keep them guessing). Mayo have a fine abrasive halfbackline it has to be said, all three of them. They haven't met the likes of Declan and Galvin though.
I wouldn't consider Donnchadh undroppable at all. I'd imagine he will start on current form, and he's a much improved player, only second to Darran in that respect. A selfless man who gives his all. The one caveat is that he yet to reach All-Ireland winning heights to his game, a level he'll need to step up to (I'm thinking like Scanlon and Griffin did in 2009, Pa Laide in 97!). Perhaps this is the year.
As of now he's not indispensable, and the absence of Galvin certainly increased his value. If there was a more outstanding candidate for the other corner, I think he would be under serious pressure, simply due to the fact that Galvin, Declan and Darran are superb players in his line. That's no slight to Donnchadh, and I'd love to see him kick on. But it could well be that now that we have players back that he'll return to his 50 min role where he runs himself into the ground, and there's no shame in that. I suppose what I'm saying though is that if we are playing a team with a high tempo, with physical halfbacks counterattacking with real pace I think he would be to the pin of his collar - could he handle Kevin Cassidy/Karl Lacey? Jordan/Harte? (I'm not sure the Dubs halfback line is as threatening, and Mayo I haven't seen enough of, although those stats are impressive Joxer). There was a very good reason Tadhg Kennelly was vital against Cork. The air gets thinner now, and space will be at a premium.
I like the cut of that Donoghue lad. Reminds me of Mike Frank in 97. Except now in such physical combat where the first half of games can be so negative, bringing on a fast two-footed young lad for the last 10mins has added value. A cornerback's nightmare.

Darran's hamstring. Gooch's ankle. Donaghy's knee. Declan's knee.
With 4 of our scoring forwards carrying injuries its a huge concern ahead of the semi final.

Looking forward to this game, which is something very new when playing Kerry. It's not that i am confident of winning but i have confidence we will compete properly this time. Looking back in 06 we gave ye far too much respect and stood off too much.
This team is a different animal under JH, they will fight like dogs for him, keep up tight and the heads wont drop (hopefully). There is a lot of things that need to be worked on for Mayo, AOS needs to release the ball quicker and stop running into three oncoming players, we still need to tighten up even more, Cork could of got a couple of goals ( man free on edge of square toward the end, was a cert goal if it got to him).
Kerry are Kerry and are always quality but they have not looked that sharp to me so far bar the one half v Cork. I still expect ye to win tbh but will try convincing myself otherwise.
Hope to see ye in Dublin anyway and the craic will be had as usual, good time for Kerry people in general. Up Mayo
