Great to be in a final again. Incredible to think that Gooch is playing in his 8th final in 10 years. Overall I felt that we had a bit too much class throughout and were always a step ahead though it was by no means a foregone conclusion and things could still have gone wrong. Kealy had another very good game despite one or two hairy moments under a high ball. Tom Sull was outstanding throughout and had varley in his pocket. Killian had some good and bad moments but was not as tight as I would like. Marc had a very tough day today and seemed off the pace. This is the main worry for me. We gave up far too much goal chances.
The half back line did well overall particularly Brosnan. All three of them benefitted from being the spare man in the 1st half due to Mayo dropping a man back in front of the back line. Midfield gave a good account of themselves again and Mayo never got any sort of foothold.
Donncha had a quiet game but again worked very hard and I felt that once Donncha went off there was a lot more space in front of our full back line hence the goal chances for Mayo in the last 15 mins. Darren played in bursts but overall was not in the game enough. Declan had his quietest game in a long time but he was due one.
Donaghy again was off form and is a real worry despite a couple of nice scores. He seems sluggish and and lacking sharpness. O'Leary today was outstanding, by far his best game in a Kerry jersey. Gooch was simply outstanding, there is little more to be said. Again he showed why he is one of the all time greats. Paul was the only sub to make a real impact and jack now has an interesting dileme.
By the way, may be I am being over sensitive here but did anyone else think it was poor the way that Martin McHugh was on the big screen 10 minutes before the game in front of 50,000 people and the players themselves going on about kerry's midfield being weak and the backs being too old. It showed a serious lack of respect for a great team but why should I be surprised.

The players were out doing their warm-up at the time and could have done without hearing that.

Great answer to all the questions by Kerry today. Rusty in the first half after no serious game in 2 months and an older age profile. Never panicked. And even with two of their best forwards asleep, and two if their best players apparently not fully fit, they worked out the rustyness and Mayo's youthful, confident stickyness and cruised to victory in a class style. Of course if Darran OS had scored the early goals, maybe it would have been a cruise all the way, maybe Kerry would have switched off too early (they did a bit near the end), either way they made Mayo look a very ordinary team, and also a very small team - totally over-powered. Kerry's midfield and backs look fine on the basis of that. If they get DOnaghy on form, and with Dec OS hardly likely to have two quiet games, I say in all honesty they look unstoppable when you add in their experience. I think if it's Dublin they should make it much harder for Kerry, if they show up, but don't have enough class, don't have Cooper, don't have the experience or belief to do more than that. If it's Donegal, well sorry to disrespect them but they will be slaughtered. They are about the same as Mayo, and would be facing a ful-strength Kerry at full throttle. Well done today, I'm very glad that Kerry won because Mayo were not good enough by far to be in a final. Depends who was asking what questions Rashers. I dont agree with you on your point that kerry were rusty going into the game or during the first 20 minutes. They never looked like losing control of the flow of the game. They were rusty because normally they would have got the scores from the early chances. In that sense I'm agreeing with you, they were in control, but didn't get the scores. Two wrong options taken by Darran OS, though he did everything else very right. Perhaps when fully sharp he would have the bit extra time and space, more likely he would ahve taken better options. With the possession they had, Kerry could easily have been 6-7 ahead at half-time. People are talking about Mayo's other goal-chances - none of them were easy at all. And the one they got was a hard chance. Nothing seriously bad defensively about any of those.

Galvin has to start the final. having an impact sub is fine but not when the impact sub is without doubt, one of your best 15 footballers. if galvin gets the nod to start he wont leave kerry down. you cant leave a player that good sitting in the stand for 40mins for heaven sake.
delighted for kealy with the saves he made today. he shipped a lot of criticism on this site.
i thought declan sullivan was quiet today. in a way that is a good thing cos i couldnt see him being quiet two matches in a row!!
now for the scrap for tickets!!

Great to witness the Gooch again displaying a master class in Croke park. He got a ball low to the ground right in front of me and quick as lightning he was up and on his way. A pass to Galvin, a point, sheer simplicity, sheer genius. We are indeed fortunate to be blessed with a footballer of such rare talent.
Job well done by Kerry today, Jack made an excellent move in the first half by switching the free man role from Eoin Brosnan to Tomás. No surprise that Kerry rattled off 5 unanswered points from there.
I was delighted for Kieran O Leary, a tasty footballer and in fairness to the man he used the ball very well and took a couple of nice scores.
Mayo were game but quite limited. Andy Moran has been excellent all year, however Alan Dillon was anonymous, Kevin Mc Loughlin was sitting in front of his full back line and the rest didnt contribute enough from play, although Killian O Connor took his goal well.
Lots to work on, but that is for another day. Well done to Kerry, some team, some group of players to show that level of desire year after year. Another proud day for Kerry today, looking forward to the other semi final next weekend, hope it will be a Kerry Dublin final.

A few initial points: * Absolutely delighted to be in yet another AI final - the buzz never fades. Roll on September 18th. * Mayo gave it a right rattle today - aided by a lenient ref and cynical tackling - do not be mistaken by the final scoreline. This was exactly the game we needed, I suspect Jack et al will be delighted with the challenge. * That said, we could have been out of sight after 10 minutes - the scoreboard was a point each - it could have been 2:5 to 0:1 - but this would not have helped us at all. My sense was we went to try and kill Mayo's morale with goals early on. It took us a while to figure out the Mayo system, but expect the same from Dublin or Donegal. * Keely's kickouts: superb. First first class. * Well done midfield. * Kieran O'Leary: How can he be dropped after that performance? Delighted for him. He showed for - and won - the ball, and did so consistently. He showed those who doubted he was inter-county class. * I think those who are lauding Tomas probably missed the fact he was the spare man for the first half, which gave a man of his quality a lot of space and time on the ball. * THE Gooch: what can be said?
What a great day today, well done to Jack and the lads, well done to those there, we cheered on our men and didn't jeer Mayo frees, this is who we are and what we stand for...

I disagree. Galvin lifted the team. the supporters and demoralised Mayo. Mayo kept intimidating him with Marc taking up the task of guarding angel making sure Galvin kept quiet. Mayo pulled the dirty card today and took out Darren, Gooch and Star. The punch in the face on Maher, the kick in the kidneys on Darren and the pulling down (high tackle/dangerous play) of Goochie were all ignored. Let alone the elbow in the face on Galvin. By the end of the game I was ready to dismember all of the Mayo team with a camann. They were dirty and cheating and trying to foul Kerry out of the game. How they finished the game with 15 players I don't know because if this was Kerry the Sunday game panel would have had 15 players banned for a year.

dont mention attacks with a camann. paul might have had one of his somewhere nearby or his brother reggie one in the stands!! now that could have got messy. the knee into darran's ribs by Higgins was the dirtiest dig. clearly designed to wind darran so he couldnt burn them for pace. Kieran roamed a lot in previous games but the fullback was sticking with him today which was devastating on Kieran's play. Gooch was in topform today and so were Galvin, Sheehan, Tom, Marc, Tomas, etc, etc. but I think Kerry have an even bigger performance in them. I find Galvin as an impact sub a good choice as most teams target him to wind him up. The ref didn't even notice it when Galvin was elbowed in the face. Same with all the fouling on Aidan. I noticed Marc and Tomas were send in there all the time to make sure neither Galvin nor Aidan would loose their head. A disciplined Kerry with this bench can beat any team in Ireland and any team in the world.

Congrats to Kerry; fantastic win today considering the below factors. 1.Regular severe fouling on various players, Galvin, Darren O Sullivan, etc and still Mayo finished with 15- very poor on the referees and lines man point of view. Mayo got away with murder which encourages teams to foul. I am delighted Galvin stayed calm and proved his worth by scoring and tackling and setting up scores. 2. The big screen interview beforehand criticising the defence and midfield of Kerry, no criticism of Mayo. This criticism taking place in front of the Kerry team whilst they are doing their warm up and preparation. Total disrespect for this great team. This could really have put Kerry off for the match ahead. One would not want to be sensitive.
Kerry were pure class to watch, especially in the second half. One small place for room for improvement is that they will have to tighten their defence further again against Dublin (if that is who will be in the final) as they will punish any available space with goals.
However overall great performance from all the players today. Gooch was my man of the match too today, but was impressed by all. Tomas really settled the team, great save from our goalie, Galvin galvinised as always, I could point out lots more impressive elements from today; but I think i will wait til the final for that; Come on the Kingdom!!!

In fairness, the game was played in a good spirit and was quite sporting for the most part. Yes a couple of tackles went unpunished, however, this happens in nearly every game. We won, we were the better team, we are in an All Ireland final. You should be happy with that, calling beaten opponents cheats etc is uncalled for. Mayo are far from it.

Galvin elbowed in the face, Darren kicked in the kidneys, Maher punched in the face, Gooch tackled too hard and too high about 10 times. Apart from that they weren't dirty indeed. Just getting into tackles a bit too late and fouling a bit off the ball and provoking players like Galvin and O'Mahoney with digs, pushes and tackles. For the rest nothing out of the ordinary. Kerry were the better team and Mayo were playing really well and can play way better but they did get away with murder.

This group of kerry players probably deserve the privillage of playing Dublin in a final before some of them slip off into the sunset with a bag full of memories slung over their shoulder. Its a genuine questions so leave the spinning to one side.

misteallaig abu i think you are very wrong .hard knocks and physicality is fine but kneeing a player elbow and a punch. surprised of this at this level of football. normally at this level a player wouldn t take a chance like this. you d see it in junior football. junios standard referring allowed mayo away with it.

Mayo started brightly, but their handling and passing went astray as it neared half time. Cooper was quiet first half, awesome second. Hats off, the lad is a fantastic player.
I was optimistic about Mayo winning, although deep down I thought it might be another one of those days for them, and it was. I'm trying to be optimistic for Donegal against the Dubs. I really hope they can do it, but I think Dublin will win. Probably win well too.
Dublin will beat Kerry in the final too. As much as it pains me to say that, thats what I believe.

Have to disagree with you mistellagh, if that was us dishing instead of taking. . . . Brolly would be hands everywhere denouncing us, McStay would be trawling through his notebook searching for every caveat that could get "Curry" in trouble (hopefully after he can tell us the meaning of a "Lateral Pass"). Followers from other GAA Counties would be calling us the usual "Dirty Kerry Animals" and what not. I am fine with all that, but a bit of consistency would be nice. Whats good for the goose should be good for the gander.

Maybe twasnt clear from the TV but one of the Mayo forwards spent the entire first half and about ten minutes of the second standing on the D about 35 yards from his own goal.
This tactic certainly caused Kerry some difficulty and the only tactic to overcome it was running from deep and kicking points as Brosnan, Tomas and Donaghy did.
It opened up when Mayo went man to man. Declan looked like he couldnt run at full pelt.
Anthony Maher had a fine match ably assisted by Sheehan.
In the spring I walked away from the Dublin league game happy out and convinced that Kerry would win the All Ireland if they avoided injuries and managed the crazy "one game in 7 weeks" system. Then Moran and Scanlon were gone and my expectations dropped accordingly.
A spate of injuries to Cork has opened the door to Kerry to reach another final.
Kerry showed fleeting touches of what they may produce in the final but there are no guarantees.
Lots of things to be put right in the next four weeks.
Donaghy seems to have lost the spring in the jump. Declan looked injured Reidy is uncertain in the air Marc could have been caught for a goal or two
Galvin added a bit of direction to the ball being played in as Darragh used to do.
Dublin/Donegal will have come through the harder side of the draw and the experience of 2005 is too fresh in the memory to remain undrawn.
Jack and Paul gave very frank interviews afterwards. Thye know that this wont do.
A lot done. Lots more to do if the one and only Colm is to climb those steps.

Its a genuine questions so leave the spinning to one side. My opinions are my own, always. I'll stand or fall by them. It was I myself who expected Kerry to be rusty, and watching the first half, the way they didn't take those early chances (which would also have opened the game up somewhat), I believe they were a bit rusty. I think it's an almost inevitable result of not having serious competitive games in so long. Only one serious test since the league. Even allowing for Kerry's massive experience, and in some way possibly because of that, and of course because of Mayo's challenge and set-up, they were not at their best in the first half. Passes were over-hit, ball was dropped, chances were missed, quite a few players looked lethargic or just not flowing. Timing looked off. Anyway, agree to disagree. It's not that important a point in the context of the overall outcome. KG there's a thread for Donegal-Dublin somewhere I believe. My opinions are on there and won't have changed because of the outcome of this game! As for spinning, when Kerry have lost their last 4 semi-finals by a total of 5 points to four different teams, not to mention losing a 7 point lead in the last 15 minutes of the most recent league final, we'll see what outlook you might have on your next semi! If you're on that thread, who would you prefer, Donegal or Dublin, and why?
