This switching of the venue is interesting and has a dubious basis.
I remember , at the start of the nineties when Derry won their All-Ireland, flying up to Derry. The flight was only about an hour but unfortunately the match was not fixed for Celtic Park, rather Ballinascreen. This entailed a nightmare bus journey south and because of the throngs of people this journey took far longer than the flight from Farranfore . The bus journey back to the airport was a bigger nightmare because obviously everybody exited at the same time. The consensus amongst us was that the match should have been played in Celtic Park, Derry, out of courtesy to the Kerry followers. Of course, we were told that Celtic Park could not facilitate the patch because, just like now, it was being redeveloped!. I wonder, I wonder indeed.
The other point in connection with this is, I was under the impression that County Boards had to nominate two grounds for the playing of NFL games. Are Derry getting away with nominating three?
Now, I know that the southern part of the county is the hotbed of Derry football and naturally they are entitled to their quota of games down there. However, consideration should be given to teams like Kerry/Cork who have to travel from the other part of the country and facilitate them in Celtic Park. There are plenty of other league matches which could be assigned to the other venues. Indeed last year, on the Saturday evening before the Kerry/Derry match I shared a flight from Dublin to Farranfore with the Derry panel. I got talking to one of their mentors who happened to be from Armagh. He said he remembered going to see a league match between Kerry and Armagh several years ago in Killorglin. He commented on how much easier it was to commute to Killarney as opposed to Killorglin. In fact, I remember being at that match and I think Aramgh won. Not sure.
Perhaps, the Kerry County Board should clarify this stipulation about the nomination of two venues. Of course, I may be wrong in my impression. Either way, I imagine that this latest switch is not being made out respect for the Kerry boys!!

The word up here is that this is a local political issue. Strange if the greatest aggro at the match is between the Bellaghy and Ballinascreen contingents rather than the teams. Seems to be a very tight pitch alright (think Scotstown a few years ago). Don't think there are any seats in the stand either. It's reasonably close to where I live so I might take a run over there and report back on the conditions. One of the warring factions made the remark that "Kerry will bring no-one" so the size of the pitch doesn't matter

Huge controversy about the change of venue. Alledgedly some Derry supporters intend to boycott, if not demonstrate at the match. I hope this doesn't put the team off their game I also heard that they're offering free admission to any Kerry supporter who manages to find the grounds ;D

Today I took (as they say in these parts) a wee dander to Bellaghy to look at the grounds. First the good news - the pitch is in magnificent shape - weather and other circumstances permitting it should provide a proper surface for a classic match next weekend. There is quite a large car park at the grounds but I don't know what the priority will be for getting into it. It is not quite big enough for intercounty traffic and with narrow roads and village streets nearby there is not a great deal of choice elsewhere - so best to arrive early for a good spot. Now for the low point - I surmised in an earlier post whether there would be seats in the stand. Well there aren't because there isn't a stand - at least not one of the covered variety. There are some concrete steps at the far side - recommended for the vertically challenged, otherwise you will be pressed against the wire if you're lucky (if you're not lucky you will be staining to see the action through massed bodies). At least if you get to the front you will feel as if you are part of the action. The downside of this is that if any player feels inclined to do a Ricey imitation it could well be a spectator that is grabbed. Take home message is if travelling get there as early as possible to secure good parking and spectating spots.

I thought a grounds had to have a stand for intercounty games? Maybe they'll have one in place next Sunday, but there wasn't one there today. But it must be OK because it was passed by GAA HQ?

Aertel (dont know how accurate they are) have it this evening that Kennelly is expected to start the Derry game, possibly at midfield with Quirke. They report that they played there in a challenge game against the kerry U-21s last weekend.

Wednesday, March 4, 2009Kennelly set to play for Kerry
TADHG KENNELLY’S quest to re-root himself in Kerry football is practically complete. Kennelly is set to make his first senior appearance in a Kerry jersey on Sunday after returning from Australia early last month following a highly successful 10 years with Australian football club the Sydney Swans.
Although manager Jack O’Connor has yet to finalise his panel for the trip to Derry – and the rematch of last year’s league final, which Derry won – the expectation is Kennelly will perform some role having played at midfield in last weekend’s challenge against the Kerry under-21s.
But what is just as certain is Kennelly is to take over as the new coaching officer with the Kerry County Board, a position he is undoubtedly suited to. Although that appointment has to be ratified at the March meeting of the Kerry board, county chairman Jerome Conway explained that Kennelly had gone through the formal interview process and was unquestionably their man.
“It has not been formally announced yet,” he said, “but he is taking up a role as a coaching officer. It’s great news for us, because you are talking about a man with huge experience. He also did coaching in Australia as part of his training, so also has the experience of working with juveniles.”
Kennelly returned to his native Listowel without any guarantees of returning to Kerry football in any capacity, but he looks certain to play a key role in the future of the county. He joins an already extensive coaching infrastructure in the county, and will replace John Joy, who was previously the North Kerry coaching officer.
The chances of him playing against Derry in Bellaghy on Sunday improved after his showing in last weekend’s challenge, where he partnered Micheál Quirke at midfield, but also by the fact that Darragh Ó Sé has only this week returned to training and is still some way off match fitness, while David Moran and Tommy Walsh are unavailable because of upcoming under-21 commitments.

Congrats to the kerry County Board on this very proactive initiative of employing Tadhg as the new coaching officer with the KCB.
It should prove to be an inspired move, more so if they can get the new training facilities off the ground in Currans with Tadhg contributing his vast experience as a former professional footballer to the new venture.

Any word on Tommy Griffin for this one. If he's fit could he start midfield with Quirke or Kennelly coming in at some stage is needed. The back line that started against Tyrone should be given another chance. Maher could come in in the forwards instead of Tommy W.

Yeah, agree Sheehan doesn't deserve to start after the last day. Though that'll have been three weeks ago by the time the match is on so maybe he'll have 'improved' a bit.
Will the team be named on Friday again I wonder? Anyone know? There's nothing on the website just yet.

I fully agree with KG on Tadhg.....I consider his greatest legacy to Kerry football might well be in the training coaching area....not ruling out a big performance on the pitch from him this summer and the next but his experience of the professional scene will add another dimension to the Kingdom going forward... Great move by County Board

Fair play, excellent decision, best of luck to the guy, he will need a bit of it given the amount of small minded begrudgery that is fairly obvious on other threads here.

O Mahony carried a knock the last day so they moved him to the wing. Cavanagh didn't do too hot on him and O Mahony went up the field and kicked a point

Great to see so many Tralee players on the panel and team in my opinion.I feel you always have better kerry teams with quality town players about the house.
I would expect Tommy and David to be huge players for kerry this summer not to mention kieran with Daniel Bohane pushing strongly for a starting place.
