i wonder how would donaghy do centre half forward and could drop back and be a 3rd midfielder as well? even though that would mean movin declan out of his best position and declan is flying there, maybe that wouldnt be worth it think Jack would be very slow to move Dec from centre-forward, if you remember when Dec was struggling for form a couple of years back, Jack wouldn't move him even though he probably should have at the time. but Dec is flying and was outstanding the last day. if we employed Moran as wing-forward with Donaghy in midfield could Moran drop in as a third midfielder? even thinking about it, if Tommy Griffin returns as wing-back he could drop into midfield too, we've alot of midfield options in the panel, hope we use them wisely. as for Dara, think 20 mins to start a match and 15 minutes before the end, if he was willing ot do it would be an idea as Longball was suggesting, he dominated the first half in the All-Ireland but faded and can't really be expected to hold the thing together himself. one thing about midfield, we could string three across the centre, one on either flank and one in the middle, would make it difficult for opposition to anticipate the kick-out and make it difficult to crowd midfield, time we were the one's to spring a surprise on the opposition, Cork did it to us with Cussen in Killarney (couple of years back and Tom got no real instruction on what to do, follow him or to stay) and it caused us serious problems

Don't see Donaghy as a centre forward and cant see Declan being moved out of there unless for exceptional reasons.
Wouldn't rule out seeing Tommy Griffin at midfield as well as in the backs.

I like the idea of rotating Donaghy and Declan, I think in games like against Cork, where they have a lot of tall men it could work to help out, out there.
Also if we had Declan in the full forward line for spells, he would get a few scores another scoring corner forward is what we need. I really don't know about the "twin towers". Too predictabel, and really at this moment not natural scorers either, Walsh missed a lot last Sunday, was easily blocked down, needs to improve on this big time.

Walsh needs to improve the shooting alright, but its not that bit a deal, he's a serious footballer and it shouldn't take that much to work on.
even a quiet word in training to say, "maybe take it around the keeper, see if he takes you down or roll it low to a corner, don't belt it straight at him".
Walsh will do fine this year, and he's still only a young fella learning his trade. better he made these mistakes now rather than later in the year.
the difference i would hope to see is we learn from mistakes this year, last year we made errors we had made before, bit heartbreaking!! especially kicking ball from too far out in the final, and it dropping thirty yards short, unbelievable we did that again.
but all looking good so far, don't ever remember having a panel like this- as for Dec, he is an excellent goal getter around the square but i think Jack sees him as the guy to make thing click and its hard to argue, he carries the ball like nobody else.

He is a great ball carrier yes, but so is Darren and Dec is probably a better score getter than Darren, this will take some pressure of Cooper too, if a really reliable scorer is in there with him.
In fairness i know that the Walsh situation is not a big deal, but it will not be resolved this year in my opinion, judging by performances so far. Great great winner of the ball, but looks mighty awkward kicking, he does not have much of a probelm finding the goal or a specific part of the goal, it's just his ball to foot motion is so so slow and obvious.
I think Donaghy has always done really well around the middle, and for me him at centre forward is a great option for us. as is Declan going corner.
Cooper and Declan playing off of either Donaghy or Walsh inside!!!! Jaysus!! Would be awsome in my opinion!!! like Cooper and MFR inside with Dara!! Pull the either of the big men out the field a little and give Dec and Cooper room inside. Salivating!!!!!!!! ;D

Declan is the best centre forward in the country bar none, leave him there! agreed, since that day in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, he's turned it around to the point where you'd dread taking to the field without him at Number 11.

i'd prefer to see tommy walsh or donaghy at the edge of the square. i think when you have both in the full forward line we're inclined to overuse the high ball.
i'd like to see a ff line of the gooch, tommy, and declan sullivan tried. why not?
declan is a class number eleven but we have alot of options in this line. galvin, moran, darren o sullivan, kennelly ,walsh etc.
i think we'd keep the scoreboard ticking over more if we had 2 lethal finishers etiher side of tommy walsh. declan played alot of underage football as a full forward. in fairness his trademark is breaking tackles if he rounds his man in the full forward line 3 or 4 times in a game that will create more goal scoring opportunities. i think it's a tactic that is definitely worth a look. i'd like to se darren getting more of a run this year but as a corner forward i don't think he scores enough. his very accurate but i think there would be more of a cutting edge to our game with these 3 playing inside.

I think Tommy is technically a very a good kicker of the ball but he takes too long to get his shot off at times.

Tommy needs to work on the quickness of his feet while on the ball in close situations.A few one on one coaching sessions with the gooch might not go astray!

A bit to work on alright. Remember how many times his kick got blocked down last year? But by God there's a mighty platform to start from!

just a different style required in close to goal, remember being very impressed at the speed he could catch, turn and put it over the black spot for the Under-21's. but as people have said here, tis a bit different when ur closing in on goal.
still though, was there any need to be going for goals in the 2nd half against Tyrone? just keep the scoreboard ticking over at the stage- tommy's a fine footballer, only a young fella and it will come to him.

Neither Moran nor Walsh will I understand be considered for the Derry match due to the close proximity of the U-21 game the following Saturday - should open the door for the selectors to have a look at Tadgh Kennelly plus the return of Donaghy & Quirke etc.

No direct train to Derry from Dublin you'd have to go via Belfast..not worth it really. You could probably get a bus or flight to Derry if you had the euros

If you book on time you can fly from Dublin to Derry for 10 euros one way (excl. taxes, etc). For about 60 euros you can fly to Derry and back and then take a bus from Derry to the game. But.... I'm sure there's a bus with Kerry supporters from Dublin and back. www.aerarann.com

i have to agree with die hard on this one..its too easy a tactic to defend when you have two big lads to simply launch the ball into..the high ball into tommy the last dya worked a treat because it was used very intellligently i.e when he was isolated with the gooch roaming beside him...i believe the lads in the camp are not happy with bryan sheehan in the squad at all..i think its unfair on bryan because he is not up to the standard when it comes to the tyrones of the world..there is no room for passengers anymore

Anyone want to take a stab at the team for next week if Moran and Walsh are definitely out?
Is Quill done? - the league really suited him in past years and us because of his scoring ability.
Anyone know if MFR is back in training?

match changed from ballinascreen to bellaghy:
The Ballinscreen club is up in arms after the Derry county board decided to move Sunday week’s glamour NFL Division 1 clash with Kerry to Bellaghy.
The Oak Leafers thumped Westmeath in their last outing at Ballinascreen, but the venue won’t be playing host to last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists after Derry manager Damian Cassidy had requested that the game be switched to Bellaghy.
Derry chairman Seamus McCloy explained: "He (Cassidy) felt that the surface in Ballinascreen was too heavy, and if there was rain, that it would cut up even worse.
"It was the manager’s request. The county board passed the decision to move the game to Bellaghy and it was approved by Croke Park."
But Ballinascreen chairman Lawrence Cleary is furious over the venue switch.
"We are really disappointed. I can’t understand how they can make a decision on a pitch 18 days before the match," he said.
"At the end of the day, Derry beat Westmeath by 14 points and they scored 1-18. I can’t see what the problem is.
"We spent a lot of money in our preparation for these matches. We put in new fencing and built new dugouts. We are really annoyed about this."
Celtic Park usually hosts Derry’s home matches, but it is currently unavailable due to redevelopment work.

Tighter pitch in Bellaghy? That was my first thought as well. If it is the reason it is very short sighted as to win an All Ireland (which should be Derry's ultimate aim) then you have to play 3 games in the biggest pitch of them all.
