The search for the Jack Murphy begins on Valentia Island tomorrow. The locals might fancy their chance of an upset on their own territory, could be a close one.
The town start as clear overall favourites again. Tricky opening round on Sunday though against one of the few clubs to lower their colours in recent years in the local championship.
QF1 Valentia 1-10 St Michael's/Foilmore 1-13 - played on Saturday, October 12th at 3.30pm in Chapeltown QF2 St Mary's 3-12 Skellig Rangers 0-10 - played on Sunday, October 13th at 1.30pm in Con Keating Park
QF3 Dromid Pearses 2-6 Waterville 0-8 - played on Saturday, October 19th at 3.30pm in Dromid
QF4 Renard 0-8 Sneem/Derrynane 1-6 - played on Saturday, October 26th at 3.30pm in Renard
SF1 Dromid Pearses 0-14 St Michael's/Foilmore 2-4 - played on Saturday, Nov 2nd at 2pm in Con Keating Park
SF2 St Mary's 2-15 Sneem/Derrynane 1-6 - played on Sunday, November 3rd at 2pm in Waterville
FINAL Dromid Pearses 0-6 St Mary's 3-11 - played on Saturday, November 16th at 3pm in Renard

Hard to see any team getting near St Marys this year, not that they are very good but the other teams have fallen away considerably. I think Dromid have been in every final since 2017 but they are very depleted now and I dont think Graham is playing because of his injury, Renard probably have the best chance of an upset but traditionally they struggle to get over the line against the Marys and Renard havent been in a SK final for 35 years so even getting to that stage would be an achievement.
Dromid/Waterville could be close, they drew in the county league and i wouldnt rule it out again. Renard at home should have too much for Sneem/Derrynane

The 3rd quarter final of the Walsh's SuperValu South Kerry senior football championship took place yesterday in front of a large crowd at pairc an phiarsaigh.
Dromid were first on the score sheet via a Chris Farley free, then Donagh 'shine' O'Sullivan made a penetrating run through the 'caseys' defence and offloaded to Graham O'Sullivan who drove a powerful shot past Jack O'Shea the Waterville goalkeeper. Waterville who were looking for their first championship win over Dromid in ten years replied with an Adam O'Dwyer free. Chris Farley with another pointed free extended the dromid lead to 1-2 to a point, Waterville closed out the first half scoring with pointed frees from Adam and Barry O'Dwyer to leave the hosts with a two point advantage.
The second half began with a Graham O'Sullivan long range effort which was tipped over the bar, then came the game clinching score, Niall O'Se offloaded to the industrious Michael Sheehan who found the on rushing Sean O'Se who then blasted the ball to the back of the net. Waterville to their credit battled on and Jack Curran scored an excellent long range point - Their only point from play on the day, followed by two Barry O'Dwyer frees left three points between the sides again. Chris Farley tagged on two more pointed frees to give the Pearses some breathing space, Graham O'Sullivan then boomed over a fantastic point from the right wing which was certainly the score of the day. Waterville finished out the scoring with Jamie O'Sullivan and Barry O'Dwyer placed balls. Full time score
Dromid 2-6 Waterville 8 points
As the old saying goes, goals win games. Graham O'Sullivan Gave a man of the match performance and was assisted by his midfield partner Sean O'Se the dromid midfield accounted for 2-2 out of the 2-6 (Chris Farley supplied the rest via placed balls). Dromid were hampered by the loss of Donagh 'Shine' O'Sullivan half way through the first half due to injury and will be sweating on his fitness for the semi final next week.
Dromid join St.Mary's and St.Michaels/Foilmore in the semis and will be joined by either Sneem/Derrynane or Reenard today. Based on the evidence so far it's St.Marys to lose.

I seen Graham play midfield with both club and South Kerry a few times, and was always impressed. Primarily link play, passing ability and direct running.... I'd love to see him get a crack at midfield for the county for a game or two. Might not work out or be the answer, but I's love to at least see it trialed.

Predict a St Mary’s Dromid final with little to choose between them but there could be a surprise pairing yet

What would the likelihood of Bally/Foilmore winning be? Poor results all year but in Jack Clifford & Ian O’ Sullivan they have young players with pedigree who could step up to the plate. They are also scorers which is a huge thing in a championship which could be decided on a bad day with low scoring

Bally/Foilmore should really have beaten Dromid in last years semi final. I expected them to push on this year but they had a woeful county league and could have lost to Valentia in the first round. Hard to know, i think at this stage people are sick of looking at Marys and Dromid in the final although the board has somehow managed to keep them apart in semi finals for years now. This would be 8 years in a row if they avoid each other in the semi finals 😶 Dromid are very low on numbers, Dylan Donoghue, Shane and Niall Connor, Cian Shea, Kealan Farley, Kevin Sheehan, Gearoid Jackie are all abroad, Thomas Curran tore his cruciate earlier in the year, Kevin O Shea retired. Thats almost a team in itself. Donagh Shine ended up in hospital in Cork after the game with Waterville after a nasty head injury, not sure if he will be playing again this year.
St Marys arent exactly bursting at the seems either with numbers but have a very solid and experienced 15 with Sheehan leading them. Hard to see anyone beating them this year imo

Bryan Sheehan deserves a lot of credit to still be playing with the Mary’s considering there are not as competitive at intermediate & co. League level as they were before. Would be very easy to sail off into the sunset at his age and considering all the football he has played between school, club, division & county. It can’t be easy on the body.

It can be very risky to keep going into your forties as the body doesnt heal or take the hits as it used to, as mentioned above Curran got a very serious injury in a county league game finishing his football and putting him out of work for several months. Aidan Dash is still lining out for Portmagee, Micheal Sheehan played last week for Dromid. Im sure Ronan Hussey will be playing for Sneem/Derrynane next weekend. All lads in their forties and im sure theres more that ive forgot but I give alot of credit to these fellas that keep the show on the road for the rural clubs

They deserve a lot of credit for that when it would be very easy to step away and not be dealing with the hassle of playing & training.

How did renard lose today. Any reports As the scoreline suggests it could have gone either way but Sneem/Derrynane were probably just the better team on the day. Had a defensive set up that Renard never managed to break down apart from long range efforts by Mark Sugrue. Maybe they could have deployed Mark in the full forward earlier in the game to give support to Sean Teahan who never really got in to the game. The winners had very good individual performers that swung the day for them, especially Tadhg O'Sullivan in the half back line, Ciaran O'Sullivan at midfield who was probably man of the match and who chipped in with 2 points from play (although there was some debate about whether they were inside the post), Ian Galvin who won a load of ball in the forward line and kicked the winning score in to injury time, and Oisin Breen who scored 1-1 in the first half and was a constant threat and set up the winning score at the end. The draw was made afterwards and went along predictable lines with the Marys and Dromid kept apart again.

He has been concentrating on playing soccer with Kerry for the last few years. I think he's still under 20 next year. If he gave it a lash, he'd be a great addition to Tomás and the team.

Great win for Sneem/Derrynane, small bit of a surprise but not that big a shock after. Renard have a habit of underperforming in the sk championship and as i mentioned previously, they havent made a final since the late eighties. Dromid and BallyFoilmore next saturday in the Con Keating park, could go either way, Bally should probably have won this same clash a year ago only for a late Dromid penalty. Sneem/Derrynane are rewarded with a semi final clash against current champions and favourites St Marys, thats on in Waterville on Sunday

Piarsaigh na Dromoda: 0-14(14) St.Michael's/Foilmore: 2-4(10)
Honestly the scoreline doesnt reflect the game at all. Dromid were light years ahead in all departments, i fancied this to be a close game but it never ever looked likely. Two late goals for Bally and the fact that Dromid took the foot off the gas halfways through the first half makes the scoreboard look far more respectable for Bally than they deserve. Theres not a whole pile to reflect on here, Graham did well enough, Niall Connor was good around the middle for Dromid as well and their forwards had the beating of their men even if they left several chances after them in the first half. Its some drop in fortunes for Bally, not a many lot of years ago they held their own for a few years in the senior championship and sat comfortably in Division 1. Im not sure what the split is in terms of Ballinskelligs/Foilmore players but they are below in division 5 again, numbers dont seem to be an issue but they cant seem to put anything together at all
St Marys: 2-15(21) Sneem Derrynane: 1-6(9)
Another lopsided affair, Sneem/Derrynane started brightly but ran out of steam very quickly, they lacked a focal point up front and kicked several wasted balls into the arms of Marys defenders. Marys were their usual selves in sk championship. They held the ball well and picked off points at their ease, Darren Casey got motm and popped up with some lovely scores from corner back. Sheehan of course dictated play from the back and kicked some nice frees
Yet another St Marys/Dromid final, thats seven of the last 8 by my count, thats not including a replay that was thrown in there somewhere, they must be well sick of looking at each other now in finals. I really didnt think Dromid were going to challenge this year but they do look like the only team capable of upsetting the Marys. Heightwise they are lacking but they have a great attitude and wont be found wanting for effort. Marys for me still hold all the aces and id still tip them to win. Apparently the final is on in Renard in 2 weeks, not sure Renard have ever hosted a final so maybe i might have heard that wrong

As this eagerly anticipated final gets closer finding it very hard to separate these evenly matched teams while Mary’s are justifiably favourites Dromid s returning players should keep it very close could we have a draw or will Mary’s just shade it on the day

Renard at 3pm tomorrow is the venue. I see on another thread that the NK board often get criticised, well in my humble opinion the SK board isnt far behind in terms of incompetence. Renard, while a lovely pitch is about as bad a venue that you could pick for a game as big as a SK final. There is hardly any parking of note and id fully expect there to be a lot of people forced to walk from a long distance away and will most likely miss the start of the game if not there early. They are already calling for people to carpool which isnt a good sign. Waterville is the logical choice but i spose the chairman has got this game to his home club. Same thing happened a few years back when the final was played in Portmagee. A 3pm throw in is also pushing it for light in case of any delays, no idea why they couldnt just have it at 2. I see on the posters doing the rounds on social media that its a €15 buy-in too which seems very steep
Onto the game, its very tight but I still see Marys as favourites, they just have too many aces. I dont think Dromid have as many around for the final as rumoured and will probably have the same team as the one that started in the semi final against BallyFoilmore. Looking forward to it, most of the recent clashes between these two have been very entertaining. Anyone heading to the match is advised to travel early

Going by google maps though, it seems to be in the middle of nowhere with no supporter parking at all; the road outside doesn't even look like one that could really accommodate it. Strange choice.

A 15th South Kerry title for Brian Sheehan today. Some achievement. He was imperious today as well. Nominally the keeper but playing more of a quarterback role than anything else. Handed out a few lessons on striking the dead ball too, think he bagged four points altogether. Easy enough for St Mary's in the end. Foul-ridden game. I daresay the SK championship could do with a few other teams stepping up at this stage, it's Marys and Dromid nearly every year now.

Not a whole pile to add on the game yesterday. St Marys fully deserving with a dominant performance, they came out of the blocks at full pelt and much like last year an early goal gave them a platform that they never looked like losing grip of. Several of Dromids key players didnt perform anywhere near their best and unfortunately the game passed a few of them by. Their starting goalkeeper broke his finger in a kickaround friday night and couldnt play so that probably didnt help, Donal O sullivan stepped in between the sticks, by my reckoning he hasnt played in goal since the final 2 years ago so hardly ideal but he made some good saves and couldnt really be blamed for any of the goals. One thing I noticed and i spoke about older players previously, Dromid started with 3 players in their forties, they brought another one on as a sub. Thomas Curran came on despite having had surgery on a ruptured achilles earlier in the year (not cruciate as I said earlier) Thats incredible dedication and the likes of him, Micheal Sheehan, Donal O sullivan and Eoin Leary deserve great credit to keep showing up when im sure it would be easier to hang up the boots. Graham didnt really feature at all and hopefully now he gets a few weeks rest as I think his ankle injury is still at him.
Marys are a pretty young team bar Bryan Sheehan and their fitness and extra legs showed yesterday all over the park. Tadgh Connor got motm but realistically you could have given it to any one of them as there was no weak link to be seen. Jack Daly and Aidan Walsh were very good as were the Cournanes and Darragh Gow kept a tight leash on Niall O Shea. Bryan Sheehan bossed the game from the back although I felt he was very lucky to get away with a pull in the square on a Dromid forward early on. It was a foul ridden game to be very honest, I wouldnt say the ref had his finest hour as there were several mistakes made such as a bizarre mark given to the Marys in the 1st half even though the pass was made well inside the 45. Ultimately it didnt really matter as Dromid tired and Marys kept the scoreboard ticking over. Congratulations to them but as mentioned above, somebody new really needs to step up and challenge them as the sk championship is in serious danger of losing its appeal. This Marys team are young and could easily win the next 4 or 5 in a row. They never seem to have an issue with fellas travelling abroad for work and a lot of them are home based unlike most of the other South Kerry clubs. This makes a huge difference for training and it shows on the pitch
On a side note Renards pitch was in fantastic condition and a credit to the club. They did their best with limited parking available although I went early to avoid any hassle, a good few people came in late but all in all it was well organised by Renard and all their officials and helpers
