Going by Aodán's co-commentaries over the years - never a fan of the mass defence and slow build up - and given the way he played himself, there is at least some hope of a more direct kicking style and he might be able to coach the lads how to finish gilt edged goal chances and put them isteach sa líontán instead of trying and failing to set up volleyball goals or taking points when staring at the whites of the goalkeeper's eyes.
From what I remember people saying of Cian O'Neill, his training sessions are said to be enjoyed by the players and never dull. On match day his teams can look like they are in a straight jacket at times where the defensive structure is the only thing in players heads. Galway were very unlucky not to be All Ireland winners this year though.

I'd be interested in what input the players had as none played under ONeill. this is not true, at all! and players talk, its not just playing under somebody, its reputation in the game and O Neill is one of the best coaches in Ireland. OK so we've 3 lads from 2014. What has he done since then to suggest he's one of the best coaches? Kildare,Cork,Galway. Galway certainly improved but lost 3 national finals. I think best coaches is a stretch.

Shane walsh is more than capable of converting the chances he got that day... do ya remember some of the scores he got against Kerry 2 years ago??

But the point remains if he's that good what has he won since leaving Kerry and why do we need to take a guy that's been around so many counties. Would Dublin take him.

After O’Neills last stint here I’m fairly sure I remember hearing the players didn’t like him as a coach..

Hope everyone has heard of these people:) All this talk of needing to win All-Ireland medals to be a coach reminds me of a friend who had less than zero interest in football. After Jack o Connor was appointed Kerry manager in 2004 he decided to pretend he knew what he was talking about and stated that Jack was the right man to be manager and he couldn’t be sure Paidi O Se had ever kicked a football in his life!! The best part about this, I think anyway, is that this lad had a brother who played for the Kerry senior team for a number of years!!

O Neill only left because of him getting his own county gig - he tried it at 2 small counties and then back to galway and they get 2 all ireland finals in 3 years. he has a superb record who ever he takes over, as many all ireland finals as any coach in ireland at this stage - i make it at least 7 finals for the teams he has coached and he spent 6 years with teams in that time, who hadnt a notion of even getting near a final no matter who coached them.

Welcome announcements tonight and best of luck to the new management team. We have lost 2 selectors but we have replaced 2 selectors and more so brought in a head coach, which I hope means he sees over all the coaching, but especially the S&C.
Have people forgot how we faded in the last 20 minutes of most games in the all ireland series, it was not selectors that caused this failure, so I am happy to welcome Cian back to kerry, hope he can fix this issue with Kerry and if he does I am sure we will be back in an all ireland final.

Cian will be an addition i think.. i dont like this thing where he wants to be the coach or head coach.. this isnt soccer or rugby.. looking at the press release its all very complicated.. we have 3 coaches - Cian, Pa and Paddy.. we have 3 selectors - aodan, james, Cian.. and Jack as manager.. i hope roles have been clearly defined for each individual.. could turn sour very quick... personally id prefer if it was a 2 man show.. bit like john kiely & paul kinnerk.. kieran mcgeeney & donaghy.. jim mcguinness & rory gallagher.. Liam sheedy & eamon o'shea.. sure we'll see how it goes

Can you explain why. Both Tally and O'Neill are defensive coaches. ah here, if you think both of these men only coach on defending, you are away with the fairies! Tally being a defensive coach is the biggest myth in GAA. O Neill is an all round coach. You keep coming up with these posts as if you know everything that's going on. Can you please explain to me what O'Neill has brought to Galway as a forward coach over the last 3 years? I live in Galway and am well aware with what's going on in Galway football. Also can you explain what Tally brought to the the Kerry attacking strategy this year. I'll go back to my faeries now.

Donaghy is definitely not the main man outside McGeeney in the Armagh setup.
I think too much is being made of the complexity of thestructure. Tally was the main coach, now it is O Neill. Tally will be doing a lot of what Tony Griffin was doing and will probably be involved in some other specific coaching areas. Costello and McGearailt are replacing Murphy and Quirke as selectors.
McCarthy is assistant coach but this is not unusual and is really just formalising what often happens anyway.

I find it hard to believe we don't have a suitable coach in Kerry. I don't support the statement that he's one of the best because the results do not support that.

Pat O Shea would be my no 1 choice also but that is a very big if. It is a concern that we are having to go outside the county again but whether there are better options within the county, I could not say. On O Neill, his track record is pretty good. He nearly always improves the teams he is involved and has had some success along the way. I don’t know who the best is but O Neill I think is part of the conversation. Ultimately it is very subjective and you could argue it all day.

Maybe as its Jack's last year but a guy that goes from one county to the next is not for me. But it's done now and we'll row in behind them.

Pat would never go with jack and vice versa. We have gone from only paying one outside coach to paying two outside coaches. I don't include Griffin as he was sports psychologist. Jack is trying to save himself some creditability by bringing in cian o neill. In fairness quirke must be a big loss if we are bringing in outside coach.

Gillroy went in with Farrell because it was for the greater good of Dublin. Reading some of the Galway reaction and their not disappointed. That tells you all you need to know.

When I heard whispers in the last 48hrs about a big move, I was optimistic but didn't want to get my hopes up. But I think this is a big step forward on the face of it. Was critical of the board and Jack and still have issues with 2023 and 2024 but looking forward and not back, there is credit due for sorting this out before the start of the County Senior Championship.
Cian O'Neill is a brilliant coach according to most informed sources. I think it's a great sign, and I was one of those being critical of Jack for leaning towards yes-men, that he would bring in someone like O'Neill who is not going to get involved unless he is guaranteed to have a big input.
James Costello has been involved at a high level for a few years now and did very well with Clare this season with Mark Fitzgerald, so not a bad selector to have. No shrinking violet either. Aodán Fitz is a smart guy who I didn't expect to see involved but he hopefully will offer a lot.
The S&C is still a concern for me I must say. But Cian O'Neill will go a long way to sorting this out I'd be certain. He needs to. Twice in 4 years in All Ireland semi finals we've been dead in extra time and the last quarter of the 2023 final quite a few players - Seánie for one - were cooked.
Feeling more positive than I was this morning for 2025. Hoping they can freshen things up and give the team a new impetus.

I don’t think Jack has ever been a man to listen to others too much and there’s a reason why Quirke and Murphy stepped away. He has to have a selector or two for show but everyone knows the 2 lads weren’t his first or second choices.

Cian O’Neill is a very good coach and has done very well most everywhere he’s been. Whether he’s good enough to help get us over the line remains to be seen. He does tend to like the limelight which turns people off him a bit. He did a very good job with Galway, Joyce was going nowhere with them before he joined. Anyway wishing the new management team the best of luck.

So commentators are more important that Kerry GAA - we've heard it all now. Look, ye are putting up no solution here, ye are even lowering Jacks stock. Have ye not anything good to say even about the man? When the management team is announced, I will wish them and the Kerry team the best of luck. Posting rameis on here will not make a blind bit of difference so relax, enjoy the listowel races and I'll see you in Tomaisins for a pint or two You are gone from bad to worse - I don't post rameis and if it didn't matter why are you on here? Everyone supports Kerry but we are not all blind. Bye now!

I can't hide it that I haven't a good feel about what's ahead and I hope I am slagged to Timbucktoo for my 'cynicism' when we win Sam in '25. My concern is that JackO isn't up to it and which will reflect on the new recruits here as he overrules.
On reflection maybe some of us don't get it that nobody changes overnight and as you hit 60ish you might change for a spell but you will revert to type - it is just the way we are.
Still Jacko is a GAA man and maybe, just maybe, he might get us over the line. It is this playing with fear that does my head in - you play with caution (as opposed to fear) when you are 2nd best and hope to pull a timely tactic out of the hat. We are becoming more predictable, a bit like Mayo - lovely football but no silver.
Anyway I've said my piece and explained the thinking behind it. Ah maybe the forum is struggling a bit or is it that nobody wants to dice the elephant in the room - I'd just love some credible Kerry GAA head to call it out, one way or another. If the forum is a true reflection of the county then we are split with one half knowing nothing about football and the other are wasting their time talking to them! I am not happy either with the pampering of those who trolled those who stood up for Kerry - we didn't win 38 through nonsense.
Good night!

Look the dogs in the street know the two boys were not his first choice and the players were not happy with the proposed appointments either.Cian O Neill was brought in by jack to placate the players and Aidan is the sole selector with intercounty experience and the one guy I am most optimistic about . I hope this mish mash arrangement works for my fellow south Kerry man but with blurred defined roles I have my fears and hopefully we won’t have another Donie Buckley scenario half way through the season .However I wish jack and his crew all the best for the year ahead and we all hope Sam returns in 2025

I doubt Jack would bring in Pay o Shea simply because they would clash and Jack likes to get his way. Aodan Mcgearailt is a good addition though very astute and has a great way with players
