This is what Armagh GAA people have had to put up with in their own locality for the last week. Páidí talked about the helicopters after losing in 02. In a metaphorical way, the helicopters have never left. This is why I would never begrudge a team from the 6 counties any success. Their battles against teams in Croke Park is only half their battle. Every year the 12th and its 'celebrations' amongst a certain community on this island brings to mind that prophetic quote by Heinrich Heine they now have memorialized in that famous little plague on the Bebelplatz in Berlin - 'where they burn books, they ultimately burn people' ...

Armagh are expected to go long on kickouts. If this brings them success, I wonder will Cillian Burke be the first option to help Kerry's midfield out aerially instead of the usual option of Adrian Spillane.

www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41434762.htmlEoin Liston: 'If Clifford was out, there’d be nothing between the four teams' The former Kingdom star believes David Clifford, the footballer he considers “the best forward I have ever seen”, is the one difference between Kerry and Saturday’s opponents Armagh as well as Donegal and Galway The pain Kerry suffered at the hands of Dublin and seeing them win multiple All-Irelands remains a motivating factor for Kerry, says Eoin “Bomber” Liston. The former Kingdom star believes David Clifford, the footballer he considers “the best forward I have ever seen”, is the one difference between Kerry and Saturday’s opponents Armagh as well as Donegal and Galway. Seven from seven, Jack O’Connor has yet to suffer an All-Ireland semi-final defeat but this is a game Kerry are treating carefully, says Liston. After losing out on All-Irelands in finals to Dublin in 2019 and last year and the semi-final defeat to Tyrone in ‘21, they can’t afford to take anything for granted. “Kerry worry about every championship match, have no doubt about it,” said Liston at an official Armagh GAA preview event in Tassagh on Wednesday night. “Maybe the supporters don’t travel as much to the semi-finals but I believe they’re very concerned about this match.“I hope that they’re looking at the form. What’s left is Galway who have won three Connachts in a row who should have or could have beaten in an All-Ireland two years ago. Armagh, they haven’t lost a (SFC) match in two or three years apart from the draws. They’ve been very competitive. “I know Kieran McGeeney personally, seen him operate in a dressing room, seen how committed he is, seen the enthusiasm. Jees, if you don’t perform for that fella, you’re never going to perform. “My heart goes out often to him and getting so close and not getting over the line but Pádraig Harrington experienced it and Justin Rose and eventually these fellas get over the hill. “I’m hoping it won’t be (on Saturday) but between the four teams left it’s a toss of a coin. If I’d a free bet, I’d bet on Kerry mainly because of David Clifford but if David Clifford was out there would be nothing between the four teams. “We do take semi-finals seriously and there is a lot at stake. Kerry have suffered a lot of hurt over the last number of years watching a great Dublin team getting there and winning an awful lot. “These Kerry lads, they won there a couple of years ago but they want more and there’s a huge hunger and they won’t hand it to Armagh. Armagh are going to have to deserve it and it has the makings of a great game, I think.” Liston played alongside Mikey Sheehy and Pat Spillane and against Matt O’Connor but he holds Clifford in higher regard. “There are different levels. This is the best forward I have ever seen. “There have been fellas very close to him but I’d be putting him the best. I’d put Peter Canavan, fellas that come to mind The Gooch (Colm Cooper)… even just the three of those. I’m biased, I’m a Kerryman but to me he’s the best forward.” Liston was given a lift to Wednesday’s event by his friend, Armagh coach Kieran Donaghy and joked he had picked up nuggets on the drive from Tralee to relay back to Jack O’Connor. As an International Rules selector, Liston saw how Donaghy as well as McGeeney formed great bonds among players towards a common goal. “He has energy, he has three or four batteries compared to the rest of us with the one. “He’s just so enthusiastic, such an optimist, fun-loving and you have to enjoy training, the banter, the craic. There’s a serious competitive side – he hates to lose. He would be such an asset to any team in any sport. “It’s not just because he’s from Kerry and that he’s a friend of mine, I just know certain people who have that charisma that is totally unique that can unite a team environment and get it firing.” At the preview, Stevie McDonnell maintained Armagh wouldn’t be 70 minutes away from an All-Ireland final had they chose to end McGeeney’s term last August – the vote was 46-16 in favour of giving him a 10th season in charge. Insisting senior players would have left the set-up had McGeeney’s term concluded, Former footballer of the year McDonnell said: “They would have gone with him. That would have been an absolute disaster, not only for the current group of players but also for Armagh as a whole. I don’t think we’d be sitting in an All-Ireland semi-final.”

Well I didn't miss much by not being present for Derry, and nothing beats the post-holiday blues than having a massive match to look forward to straight away! I'll be honest all I've really seen of Armagh this year is the D2 League final and Ulster final. In both games Armagh had the winning of them but, at the crucial moment, went conservative and safe instead of pressing on for victory. Does this suggest the endemic DNA of this side under McGeeney - will that mean they may revert to type on Saturday when the critical time comes? Who knows! They got the Q-Final monkey of their back but this is a side that has never been in a semi-final while its an annual expectation for these Kerry players to be here, so hopefully advantage the Kingdom in this regard too. But outside of the above and even the specific opposition there's only one message I would be hammering home to our team and key players like David if I was in Quirke or Murphy's shoes: when are you lads going to start taking what's yours? If I was the two boys I'd be cornering David and challenging him to start collecting Celtic Crosses. As someone said above (and its hard to believe he's there that long) but 1 AI medal in 7 campaigns is a poor haul. We're rightly celebrated for winning our 38, but we've also lost 20+ finals. In the last 20 odd years we left behind titles in 02, 05, 08, 11, 15, 19, 23, never mind years like 2010, 2021 when we also should have been climbing the steps of the Hogan. Last year we threw a title away to our deadliest opponents. The Gaelic football ecosystem has changed utterly with Dublin's financial rise - now its a case of a constant struggle to keep at the top of the roll of honour for as long as we can. We have to take every opportunity that comes our way and this year is a huge, huge opportunity for a team like Kerry. We have to put that pressure now on ourselves and our players - the message has to be, you had the chances in 19, 20,21, 23 and blew them- do you think 1 title in all that time is good enough down here? Go out there on Saturday, get the job done and get it done again in a fortnight's time. That's what needs to be laid on the line. We've been minding ourselves all summer, its time now to show the country what this team can do. If it can than we can take Armagh and whoever comes after. An Riocht Abu. Good post, and I agree with a lot of it. But are you passing on your own personal frustration about previous defeats as a burden to David? He was but a baby for some of these games. Also you tell us what 2 assistants/selectors should be doing and it is more pressure on David. One name you didn’t mention at all was someone that was there for a good spread of those defeats - Jack. Jack is completely against any spontaneity, everything is mechanical or to use Jack’s word, “patience”. If the ball coming to David is telegraphed long before it comes it is major advantage defender. In the Derry game, in the first few minutes a high ball was sent into David. He fielded it with 2 defenders looking on not knowing what to do. It was a mark and he pointed. I thought it might be a sign of things to come. I can’t recall another high ball going in. The point is that David’s game depends completely on the structure of play from half-back line up. The concept of assistants taking on responsibility is a good one but they should be talking to specific out-field players with a specific alternative tactic or 2 to be used occasionally to give David the opportunities he is entitled to. This subject has come up a million times and it can be summed up in one sentence: Give the team freedom to do things on the pitch where they see opportunities.

If I need to muster up some anger later I'll have a look. Re: big balls into Clifford. To be fair to Jack it was clearly an instruction to do so in the 2022 final.

Oh no, certainly not implying David is somehow responsible for missed opportunities (often, ie 2021, he was the one trying to drag us over the line). I mean challenging him in the context that he is a leader on this team and has been lauded as potentially the greatest ever. A bit of reverse psychology on players like him is a tactic I'd be trying by the management - so where's all your medals to prove you're so great etc, especially as we're still waiting on him this summer to light it up like he has so often done before.

I'd be saying the same thing in the dressing room to Seanie and other mainstays and leaders in the group - you're in your prime, you have to start taking these chances, too many have been left behind, chances won't last forever. Are you satisfied being a one time AI winner or do you believe you've been good enough to have 3-4 over the last 5 years and are you going to start delivering now?!

Words in the dressing room in Croke Park at 3:15pm don't make any difference. The player has his game planned already.

I think the point about the half back line is very valid - we need kickers there at times, specifically Tom O’Sullivan & Paul Murphy to deliver quick, early ball to our inside forwards - Gavin & Briain, with their pace, are more carriers than kickers but I think we need to get Tom & Paul involved more. On the issue of David, I would like to see more ball go the other corner too - David is always our go to guy but Paul G or Killian Spillane could easily be a match winner if we mix things up a bit. I think we will be ready for tomorrow & have enough to be in Croke Park on the 28th.

Armagh are a good team with some outstanding individuals, However, I believe we have more outstanding players and, accordingly, I expect to win.
My biggest worry regarding the match is the presence of KD in the opposing camp. He was a warrior and a winner. There is nothing he does not know about the strengths and weaknesses of Jack and the strengths and weaknesses of individual Kerry footballers. He will have every Armagh player fully briefed about his opponent. For example, I can imagine KD addressing the Armagh left half back in the dressing room: look this fellow, Tony Brosnan. Adopt a foot loose and fancy free approach with him and he will kick points freely. So, lay into him from the start , live inside his jersey and test his resistance and mettle etc etc. In other words , I would be much more confident if KD was on our camp, or at least if he wasn’t with the opposition. We shall see.

Happy to see T Brosnan continuing as a starter. My comments on him coming up to the Derry match were one of the great stopped clock moments on this forum.
Would love to see him make the final, I felt bad for him missing out last year (and I think the team missed him too).

I think the version of Derry we played was better than the version Armagh beat comfortably. I base this very minimally on their win over Westmeath (just to win a game again), but more so on their win in Mayo (defeat a tough opponent in their backyard)and their hunger to avenge the 2023 defeat. I they gave it everything in the first half, their keeper wasn't caught out at sea, and were operating with confidence. It just wasn't enough...

I think the whole Donaghy being on the Armagh backroom team makes no difference. It's a nice angle for the media etc but, nothing more. It's six years since he was on a pitch with the likes of Tom, David and Seanie. They are totally different players and individuals now.
He's unlikely to know anything that a good video analyst wouldn't know.

The closer we tick towards half 5 tomorrow the more apprehensive I'm getting about tomorrow's game.if both teams play to their potential Kerry should win.
Just went over the Armagh results in the championship there. They beat Fermanagh handy. Beat down by a point in a low scoring game. Finished level on 20 points with Donegal. Beat Westmeath by 5 in a poor game. Drew with Galway after getting a gift of 1-1 from the Galway keeper. Even allowing for that they still only scored 1-12.
Against Roscommon they only scored 2-12 playing against 14 for the entire second half. The anomaly is the game against Derry where they kicked 3-17.
This was a Derry team that were in complete disarray and had yet to fall back on the all out defensive plan they fell back on against Mayo and us.
So how good Armagh actually are is hard to know. I keep reading and hearing on podcasts about Armaghs bench. Jarly Og, soupy Campbell, Oisin O Neill etc.
If everyone is fit we can call on: Killian Spillane, Graham, Cillian Burke, Stephen O'Brien. Adrian Spillane and Dylan geaney as well. If we can break even midfield or even 40% I think we will do it.
Matchups will be massive though. I'm sure Armagh will want to pin tom Sullivan back as well

Ye should hear yerselves - all the quiet ones on here getting temperatures and then the rest of us.
Seldom has it been as entertaining - ye are nearly as poetic as myself!
The heat is on and we are the heat...
Of heat of the fire, warmth of a people, Snugness of a place, croílár an teaghlaigh.
The crackle of flame, glow across the face. Heats up the tongue, out flows an old tale.
If the team are half as up for it as we are on here then there won't be an apple left in that Orchard county in less than 24 hours!
Keep it going - ye are lifting the spirits of a tired man after a heavy week.

If any Kerry player or supporter wants motivation before tomorrows game, they should look up Philly McMahons headline in the independent today. No problem with anyone saying Kerry will lose or why Armagh will win etc, but that's a piss take A) The sentiment wouldn't bother me in the slightest. B) He (or presumably his ghostwriter) doesn't write the headline. You're right Annascaul, best to ignore it 😄 still adds fuel to the fire though
