Have to say I was rather downbeat about our championship prospects after our mediocre league campaign and say little if anything to offer encouragement in Killarney on Saturday. Old failings have once again come back to haunt us. Poor in the middle third, defence very suspect when run at. Kickouts were all very conservative and not used as an attacking platform. Too slow to move the ball to the forwards. Lateral handpassing.
Looking at the team that lined out on Saturday we started with basically 6 half backs in defence. I know Jason will make a difference when he comes back but, we really need to show the opposition something else in defence. Teams have figured out the +1 at this stage. Gavin White is not an inter county centre half back. He gets lost in the morass of bodies around the middle. Midfield continues to be a major concern.
Apart from one good game against an abject Tyrone last year DOC still has to give a top 70 min performance in the championship. The forward line look completely unbalanced. Seanie inevitably will wander out the field and so too Dara Moynihan leaving Clifford isolated for long periods of time up front. Maybe this is what the management want. Which would be fine if we moved the ball faster from defence to get the ball to him.
A lot to work on in the next while.

It was like old times in the Stadium on Saturday in the blistering sunshine with an unheralded Cork team contributing stubbornly to a great contest with the result unsure until the final whistle.
A word about Cork. Their team is littered with fine footballers and at their best and depending on their attitude they could be dangerous opponents for anybody as the season advances. The caveat is "depending on their attitude". Too often they bounce off the sod against Kerry only to subsequently flatline, often against inferior opponents. I sincerely hope they play to their potential in their next game/games.
The opening stages of the game were seriously injurious to an old Kerry heart. Cork were like young calves experiencing the outdoors for the first time. In contrast Kerry were floundering. Before we had time to appreciate the sunshine and the colour and the blue/purple haze of the McGillicuddy Reeks Cork had registered 1-1. The scene of the carnage was a good distance from my perch and therefore I was left wondering why our full back line was being peeled apart so easily. I wondered if a sweeper was being engaged to give cover, I still do. In the meantime I had a bird's eye view of Paudie's effort for a goal. He seemed to do everything in a textbook fashion, he usually does. He glided/ghosted his way through and a la The Elusive Butterfly he rolled the ball towards the target. As it rolled I jumped, well a little baby jump, in anticipation. Could not believe my old eyes when it went outside the post. An inch or so. Around that unhappy period of my life, David was slipping and sliding, we had a few close wides and an effort, from Sean O'Shea I think, which i felt split the posts but was wave wide. Incidentally, there was another effort in the second half from Sean again or perhaps Graham which looked straight and true and again this was waved wide. Van Morrison had warned me about days like this.
We were finding it hard to peg Cork back but slowly and painfully we retrieved the situation to a one point deficit by half time. This equilibrium was achieved by heroic displays from Paul Murphy, Graham O'Sullivan, Paudie Clifford, his shooting apart, and above all by the masterful Sean O'Shea.
I was surprised that Cillian Burke did not reappear in the second half. He was more effective than Adrian on the other wing . Perhaps he exacerbated his recent injury. I was also surprised that Cork retreated into their shell, as opposed to the hardworking, free running tactic of the first half. Drawing Kerry on them may not have been the wisest strategy. Eventually they succumbed but they did not crumble. I was a relieved old boy at the end, scarcely able to applaud while the heart palpitations settled. Taking the back door route is something I hate to contemplate. One never knows when one is about to tread on a landmine and the back door circuit is cluttered with them.
It wasn't a glittering display by Kerry. The tactics adopted do not lend themselves to glitter. The keep ball at the end is anathema to me but it is legitimate and seems to work for teams. On the other hand, is there anything more infuriating if you are on the receiving end. I am not sure how you counter it. Perhaps you have to be brave and come out and be abrasive. In any case, it was a patient, workmanlike display and the rigorous challenge presented by Cork should bring the team on immeasurably.
A lot of the backs have have had better days. I felt Sean O'Brien did reasonably well for his first major test. On one occasion he was very clumsy towards the end near the end line when trying pick up a ball and was dispossessed. However,I do hope he is retained for the Clare game.
Diarmuid was the better of our midfielders and the longer the game went on the better he became. Joe took a horrible knock to the head late in the game. People should remember that is a formidable Cork midfield pairing.
If Dara Moynihan can marry his work ethic with two points in every game then he is worthy of his place.
There was a lot of moaning about the Clifford siblings after the game. Certainly, David's handling was mysteriously poor early on. What did he contribute? He scored three and was fouled for three which were converted. He converted whatever free/s he was asked to take. I presume he was involved in an assist or two. Needless to say, like the brother, he was a magnet for the opposing backs leaving fellows like Dara, Tom and Graham O'Sullivan sneak in for scores. People should always be mindful of this latter fact when assessing the two lads.
Paudie certainly has had better days scoring wise but some of his efforts were within a hairsbreadth of being on target. Otherwise he was as busy as a dervish, getting on the world of ball, holding it , drawing opponents in and thereby releasing a colleague.
Therefore, not the first time, the Fossa boys were two of our key men. That is my appraisal of them anyway.
The two county boards should now be sensible and enter into a home and away arrangement for finals. If there a reluctance on Clare's part then, as a sweetener, we should start the ball rolling by agreeing to travel to Ennis this year.

I'm a bit surprised that there wasn't a minutes silence for Gerdie Murphy RIP before yesterday's match. I said that exact same thing to my companion also, very surprising. The PA system is gone very poor, at the town end of on the terrace side at least, it was really difficult to hear what was being said. They were calling out the registration of a car which was causing an obstruction and I don't know how anyone was expected to hear it. Surely a few Euro could be put aside to improve the system?

It did look to me and a few more standing around me that at least one legitimate Kerry score in the second half was waved wide. Haven't watched the match back yet but I was certainly surprised about that.
As for the PA yeah it was indecipherable for those of us on the terrace. I actually had to have the Kerry GAA twitter feed on the phone to check who was coming on and off, ditto for the scores as I was parallel to the scoreboard and could not see it. As the Cork supporters in my section rightly bemoaned could they not put a little scoreboard under those glass windows on Lewis Road end or something. Its great that Tralee has the two ends showing the scores.
The toilet situation on the Terrace is really shown up when there's a big crowd too. A few portaloos on the Lewis Road side is ridiculous.
I'm very skeptical about this multi million upgrade they were talking about last summer but surely they can find a few pound to install proper toilets, a proper PA and do something about that awful gravel on the town goal side.

That was a very tough watch. I have very little hope for us going up the steps of the hogan stand in July. Maybe its the Monday Blues…. There is just something very stale about us going back to even last year save a few exceptions. Mgmt havent adapted at all and teams are figuring out our structure. Our tactics (our lack of them) are counter productive. We probably have the weakest middle third of all div 1 teams. Bright spots were Sean o Shea, tom & graham o sullivan.

The dressingroom block at the Lewis Road end were completely rebuilt within the past 20 years, maybe 2008/2009 I think. It beggers belief that no-one thought to put a scoreboard up there. I have stood where you were, in line with the existing scoreboard, and its' impossible to see.

I rewatched the game yesterday,
The positives,
- The experience to not panic and work our way back into the game - The game management when Kerry took the lead. - The individual performance of Sean O Shea while others faltered he kept us in the game. - The individual performance of Paul Murphy marking a lad that scored 3.18 in the league keeping him to 1 point. - The individual performance of the two OSullivans.
Negatives.
- Midfield - shooting - Moving Morley from CB to FB has created more problems than it fixed. - We could have conceded 3 goals in that FH. - The performance of our forwards in general turn overs etc.
To behonest while we look experienced and we don't panic we just look off it at the minute.
We seem passive and theres no urgency to our play.
Let's hope this is part of a plan and that come our first game in the group we will be a different animal.

I mean we've all been in Fitzgerald's when the weather is like what it is on Saturday. In all honesty is there a finer sports venue on this island/the world on days like that with the majesty of those mountains bathed in sunlight? We should be making sure our stadium does itself justice to its remarkable location and the vista it provides. I'm not talking of a potential financial disaster like the remake of PUC became. A lick of paint, another small scoreboard on the Lewis Road side, installing modern toilets, maybe putting in new seating in the stand and doing something decent with the town end by putting in a proper bit of terracing there. That's all it needs, nothing dramatic. The stadium has the location and scenery. You can pump all the millions you want into PUC it can't change the fact its half an hour down a dreary walk from anywhere to get a pint!!

Just needs continuous small improvements around the ground. Maybe something could be done with St Finians land - another access point and toilets maybe. The town end could do with a proper terrace. It's hard to justify a big investment when it's empty most of the time. I prefer the money is spent on grassroots, coaching, player development etc.

Agree with alot especially Paul Murphy. He was inspirational. On Morley it was tough but Hurley is a top FF.Hurley has skinned Foley in the past too and Foley came back stronger. For me our two biggest problems are midfield and our style of play. This slow ponderous build up at times does nt suit us and we need quicker ball in with forwards making quick runs.In fact as our play has become so predictable our forwards did nt even bother making runs the last day.Midfield is another huge problem that gets forgotten about every second game if the boys do well. The hard facts are our midfield will get us by nost teams both we wont be able to compete midfield with Dublin Derry and probably not with Donegal or Armagh either.I genuinely think we have regressed since winning the All Ireland and have nt improved.I know some posters keep saying we could have won Sam last year and yes we could have but we did nt and that masks some of our performances last year where we were tanked by Mayo and needed a penaly to beat Cork.Very lucky v Derry.I honestly think while Tally did brill work with us to win All Ireland we need to be more attack minded.Scores win games. The sad thing is we have a few good scoring backs and such natural scoring forwards but most are on bench.Besides David and Seanie the likes of Paul Geaney Killian Spillane Tony Brosnan and Dara Roche can score at ease if the right system is applied. The sad thing is we will probably beat Clare with a bit to spare.David and Seanie will light up the scoreboard and midfield will do well and people will think "ah Kerry are back on track" "sure twas only April".April is the new June under the new championship format.Again I think we need Barrydan.People say he not a summer play. How do we know when he doea nt get a chance. What we do know is he is honest abd a great worker and gives it his all.

On the match - job done. Some good performances but no evidence we are making progress with our known problems. Baring a disaster we should be AI Semi Finalists but getting to lift Sam is still a stretch of the imagination. We will tighten up defensively and sharpen up in attack as the competition progresses. Our style of play will get us so far but is lacking when it will come to the biggest games and our midfield is our Achilles heel when push comes to shove.
Last Sunday was one of the biggest games that Fitzgerald stadium will see this year - a meagre 17,500 people turned up (Half Full) and the stadium promoters want to invest mega money developing a state of the art stadium - absolute madness.
Fitzgerald stadium is a great place and is in need of some upgrades to be sure - but a 70m makeover is nothing whatsoever to do with the needs of Kerry GAA. Whether we like it or not redeveloping Fitzgerald Stadium will not bring big hurling games to Killarney on a regular basis, it will not bring any big GAA fixtures not involving Kerry and based on recent history the existing capacity is adequate.
The only real arguments that would support a mega development are on the basis of turning Fitzgerald Stadium into a multi events arena where GAA activity would become secondary and if other examples are anything to go by we could see the venue becoming unavailable for GAA fixtures due to American Football, Concerts or other crowd pulling events which will benefit Killarney as a tourist centre and not Fitzgerald Stadium as a GAA venue.
Develop a 5/10 year improvement program with access points, toilets, the PA, floodlights and probably a new stand are all upgraded without the need to take on massive debt that will ultimately not benefit Kerry GAA.

surely a decent job can be done on the stadium without needing to spend €70m?
floodlights. a new stand and extend terrace all the way around the town goal. toilet and bar facilities all over the pitch.
not alot else needed.

Con job by Killarney tourism interests. Basically wanting the GAA to stump for an events facility which will only benefit themselves. Not that I've any problem with people making a buck but do your own investing, lads.

Always struck me as something being driven by the hotels and hospitality sector in the town.
Why create needless debt? The minor fixes suggested here are more than enough. When was there last a sell out in Fitz stadium? Must be 1998 or 2000 v cork if it was.
In 2019 we had mayo in the super 8s and it was no where near a sellout. Also would club games that are played there lose out to concerts etc?
A lot of concerts would need to be staged to recoup the outlay.

I'd call it overly ambitious though. I imagine with all the budget surpluses that they intended to ask for as much as possible and do a big job before the next recession. I agree though that the money should be spent elsewhere rather than a stadium that's hardly full once every two years. Make hay while the sun shines type of thing.

we should be looking to fix the lack of all weather pitches in the county (way way behind soccer) and also fixing all the problems in Currans, before investing more money in Killarney.

The days of needing a 35k capacity stadium in Kerry are over. We are not going to get that attendance at championship games anymore. There is no atmosphere at games in Killarney So....get the capacity of Austin Stack Park up to 18-20k. There is a great atmosphere at games in Tralee
