Mounthawk make their first appearance in the Corn Ui Mhuiri final - and to put icing on the cake its an all Tralee Final which makes it a pretty unique event.
Kerry dominance in this competition has been amazing over the past 23 years (since 2000) with 15 of the 23 titles coming to Kerry. There have been 11 all Kerry finals in that time and only once (2006) was there a final without a Kerry side.

Whisst will you, you'll have some principal from Meath or God knows where cribbing about our unfair advantages and demanding that any Kerry secondary student that shows an ability to kick a ball should be forced to play basketball instead.

Kerry schools are quite dominant in basketball too . Maybe we should play tennis

Huge statement by Mounthawk to completely overwhelm the Sem. There’s some excellent talent in that Mounthawk side and they look very well coached by Aidan O’Shea.
The Green have had a strange year, they’ve lost 3 games I think but fair play to them they find themselves in a final while being hit by injuries.
The final will be a great occasion for football in Tralee and surrounding areas.

Mounthawk have a lot of Stacks players so they didn't have the same challenge. There is a good bit of North Kerry steel in the Green team and now that they have the engine ticking over nicely the final is by no means a foregone conclusion. Remember last year's minor semi final.

Yes, The Green have a club player from as far North as Moyvane, Jerh Brosnan who would be regarded as one of their more prominent players.

That young Brosnan would a grand nephew of Dr. Jim Brosnan and therefore a great grand nephew of Con Brosnan. I believe he is good. Another instance of black cat black kitten . There is another Brosnan on that team also. Sibling? I am not sure how he/they finished up in CBS . LIstowel and Tarbert are much nearer Moyvane. Football reasons? Very laudable reason indeed.

There are actually, two of them if I'm not mistaken, Pat and Ger, brothers, one is midfield and one in the forwards. they would be great grandchildren of the great Con Brosnan, another North Kerry lad from Ballyduff Luke Rochford also plays in the forwards.

Is it just me or has interest dropped a lot in the Corn Ui Mhuiri? Huge game Saturday and not much talk about it. Feels like there was a lot more interest in it 10 years ago, even 5 years ago.

Reminds of the TCD genetics professor who didn't subscribe to Vets Black cat/kitten theory and laughed at The Kerry Ingredient - maybe he was colour blind! Methinks Veteran should be on the TCD staff, me and Vet, joint bosses - we'd teach 'em a thing or two and 'twouldn't be all about meows, though we know the fat cat who got the cream, and the diarrhea to go with it, from it!

There are four Kerry Schools in Munster Finals this year.
Next week Tarbert Comp vs Bantry. No previews yet.
Also tomorrow:
Mitchelstown CBS footballers hoping to pass Listowel test and lift win Munster honours

CORN DONNACHA UI NUANÁIN FINAL St. Michaels, Listowel v CBS Mitchelstown
Saturday, February 10 Ballyagran, Co Limerick at 12.30pm
MITCHELSTOWN CBS will be hoping to win Munster honours on Saturday when they contest the Munster PPS U-19 ‘B’ Football Championship final, the winner of which is presented with the Donnacha O Nuanain Cup. The Cork school take on St Michael’s College from Listowel, and the CBS team have every reason to be confident of success, although, as ever, their Kerry opposition will be just as confident of victory.
After losing last year’s final in the same competition, going down to Abbey Rovers, Mitchelstown CBS are back the final, which goes ahead in Ballyagran, Co Limerick at 12.30pm this Saturday.
CBS were one of 11 schools that started out in search of lifting the Donnacha O Nunain Cup, formerly known as Corn An Uachtaran, and it is now down to a Cork versus Kerry decider.
The finalists happened to get a bye into the quarter-finals, where they were joined by first round winners IS Killorglin, High School Clonmel and Mount St Michael’s, and also Pobal Scoil Sliabh Luachra, Our Lady’s Templemore, John The Baptist Hospital in the last eight.
In the quarter-finals Mitchelstown CBS had a 1-11 to 0-9 win over John The Baptist from Hospital, Co Limerick, while St Michael’s Listowel were impressive 5-13 to 2-9 winners over Mount St Michael’s from Rosscarbery.
Mitchelstown CBS received a bye in the first round. Their first game was a quarter final with John The Baptist Hospital in Mitchelstown.
In their quarter-final, CBS did well against a strong south Limerick side and held a slight 0-5 to 0-4 interval lead.
Their goal came in the 38th minute when Cathal Walsh soloed through fifty yards and scored a great goal. The momentum was with CBS who held out for a close win 1-11 to 0-9.
In the semi-finals Mitchelstown CBS beat Pobal Scoil Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore by 2-15 to 1-8 while St Michael’s Listowel needed extra-time to overcome High School Clonmel 2-9 to 1-11.
Mitchelstown’s semi-final win was well merited over Pobal Scoil Sliabh Luachra at Banteer two weeks ago. The Cork side dominated all through, and their defence were very solid and their midfielders won plenty of possession. Up front the attack took some great scores. At half time it was 1-12 to 0-4. CBS conceded a goal on the resumption following a short kick-out. They recovered well from this set back and maintained their composure. A late goal by Cathal Walsh and a point by Ben Carey gave them a 2-15 to 1-8 victory.
St. Michael’s Listowel are trained by Liam Hassett, the former Kerry All-Ireland winning footballer. They were impressive in their quarter-final win over Mount St.
Michael’s. The semi-final was a thriller that went to extra-time. A late goal in injury time in extra-time gave them the win over Clonmel High School by the narrowest of margins in Banteer, 2-9 to 1-11.
Other players on the CBS panel include Eoin Kirwan (Mitchelstown), Sean Barry (do), Eoin Brennock (do), Gavin Canty (Ballyporeen), Harrisson Conway (Mitchelstown), Daire English (Fr. Sheehy’s), Sean Gallahue (Galtee Gaels), Joey Gubbins (Mitchelstown), Jack Hanrahan (do), Sam McGrath (Ballyporeen), Thomas McLoughlan (do), Sean O’Donnell (Galtee Gaels), Caoimhin O’Gorman (Ballyporeen), Jason O’Mahony (Galbally), Oisin Power (Ballyporeen), Jack Twomey (Shanballymore), Simon Whelan (Mitchelstown).
Liam Hassett is understandably delighted with the team’s progression, but knows nothing has been won yet and that the final will probably be his team’s toughest game of them all.
“We have a relatively small pick compared to schools like Mitchelstown and we would have a good few lads who would be a year younger than their opponents, but the players have shown great character and put in an awful lot of effort. There’s a great culture of sport in the school and the lads take great pride in representing the school, he said.
In December St Michaels under-15 team beat Clonakilty to win a Munster title at that grade, while the under-17s defeated Mercy Mounthawk from Tralee to lift the Dunloe Shield.
Plenty of the schools players featured in the successful North Kerry Under-20 and minor campaigns, while Ruairí O’Connell, Aaron Kennelly, Luke Sheridan, Pa Walsh, Aaron Carey, and Conor Sweeney have made Kerry development and minor panels.
“We have been unlucky with injuries coming into this one,” Hassett said. “Darragh O’Keeffe has a shoulder injury and he is a huge loss for us. Aaron Carey is another key player who is coming back from injury but we are hopeful that he will be able to play, while Conor Sweeney, who missed a good bit because of injury will hopefully be able to play.”

Good game for the neutral today. Credit to the CBS for making it a contest. Mounthawk were deserving of the win but were not at their best. Ben Murphy was subdued enough for example. They’ll be content to have got the win though. There is plenty improving to be done if they are to challenge for the Hogan cup however.
Paddy Lane kept the scoreboard ticking over enough for Mercy Mounthawk. His shooting is very good. He’ll need to improve physically to have an effect at u20 I would feel but of course he is only 18 this year.

Yeah, enjoyable stuff and well refereed by Conor Lane, it has to be said. The Green battled well but they were always chasing it really. O'Flaherty and Pat Brosnan were outstanding for them, I thought. Mounthawk always seemed able to get the scores when they really needed them. Paddy Lane was the difference ultimately, of course.

Agree with all of the above, it must be hats off to the CBS for staying the distance, considering the talent available to Mercy team, a lot of those lads out of minor and into the 20’s.
A great occasion for Tralee, well done to all involved, but congrats to MM and condolences to CBS.

Mounthawk become the 19th winner of this competition since 1928 and the fifth first time winner since 2000.
