Ah look, I don’t want to come across as disrespectful, no one has given more to the Kerry cause as the Strand Road man, both physically on the field, and emotionally off it, considering the spate of injuries and hardship endured on route. My point is, at some stage, the ship moves on, one must cut the cloth to suit the measure. In order of preference, Jack has two to pick from Diarmuid O’Connor, Jack Barry and Barry Dan O’Sullivan, two other starters in Seanie and Adrian can be deployed there.
I can’t see any bolters, therefore, it’s disappointing that Buckley or Mark Ryan were not afforded game time. The option of one big one small, something akin to Dublin’s old pairing of Whelan and Shane Ryan was also not test driven.
Look, the initial plan was retaining Divisional Status, that has been completed, the outside chance of a league final is a bonus, if Jack sees that as a worthwhile exercise, then there may be a more driven approach on Sunday.
Regardless, Jack probably set three or four goals for 2023; Division one as stated, back to back with Munster and All Ireland retention.
Hurdle one jumped – in that regard is Jack and Co. not on track?

I didn't want Moran to retire but he did. Let the man rest.

Its funny how your expectations change over the course of a couple of months watching the team.
If we did a straw poll on the eve of the League and said by the end we would have 6-8 points secured and have of D1 status secured for another year I'd say 95% of us would have ticked brilliant, that's all we wanted.
However here we are coming into the last weekend and I think its fair to say the general mood is not sated by the points accumulated thus far.
Like most of you I'm perturbed and a little disappointed by how below par our League performances have been. We have looked a pale shadow of the team we were a year ago.
The question is how much of this is a team displaying serious issues that could scupper very quickly a successful retention of Sam or is it the inevitable results of having to undergo a hard training regime during the League - combined with this competition simply not being a priority as the summer brings with it a totally new and more demanding format for Championship football.
Personally I think we might be reading a little too much into performances given the above.
Still losing becomes a habit and there is an arrogance expecting Kerry to simply turn it on when they need to regardless of how the season has progressed thus far.
I'd like to see our strongest team out on Sunday and I'd like us to head up the road and secure a win for nothing else than to make a statement. The summer time is coming, our big boys are coming back and anyone that wants to take Sam will get the mother of all battles.

The only issue is that if you go by last years line outs you had 2 midfielders, Seanie on the 40 and another midfielder on the wing. That's 4 of the 5 mentioned above with only one in reserve. We generally had 2 midfielders on the bench last year and actually had 3 for the final (JOC, AS and Stefan) with Joe & Adrian getting game time. With the injuries to Stefan and Joe and Davids retirement I think we are at least one short for the championship panel.

I think DOC really has to hit his straps this year in Midfield and become the senior partner. Jack Barry has always been a foil to a more dominant midfielder. Its not a slight on him its just the way his game evolved over the years. Its very hard to become the dominant midfielder if you have player 3-4 years as the junior partner. It takes a complete change of mindset and even style in how you play the game. I think its very hard even mentally from going to be the one who does the 'donkey work' like tracking Fenton etc to being the one to call the shots and demand ball is kicked out on top of you.
Barry O'Sullivan is in his first proper shot at this level so can't expect brilliant peformances.
Seamus Scanlon found the same I think. Moran got his first sustained run in the engine room in championship from 2014 against Galway and was always an equal partner at least with Maher and the senior member once Maher retired.
Stefan seems to be a bit injury prone and Adrian will only be stop gap or a needs must scenario. Jack usually tried to play with 3 across the middle.
