The first wintery morning in Donegal and the news of Kerry up here just when the xMas hangover is gone, wow - if absence or is it abstinence makes the heart grow fonder then them hoors at HQ sure know what they are at - who foresaw this as an advantage of making a balls out of the season?
Castlebar, Omagh and Galway more icing - good times are a comin - the managers we face away will make for some rather interesting encounters, can't wait for McStay pre match in McHale Park - I'd say we'll make hay, McHale can decide the shape's we throw, square or round bales!
Hasn't been as good a draw for Northern based Chiarraihoors for a long time - will be a lot of car sharing though, a laddo with big wheels t'other day dropped €230+ to fill her, us retired Petrol Pump Attendants are disturbed, 50p was the first big leap in my day when 'new money' came in and that would have ya motorin for the month - mass, a few match days and picking up the bird of course!

Though slog ahead so, with only 3 home games and long away trips to tough venues like Omagh we might have to settle for Division 1 survival - win the home games and get a couple of results on the road and I'd be happy. I think this next League campaign should be all about strengthening our hand in preparation for a new Championship format and the desire to keep Sam happy at home.
Donegal on 29 Jan could be a bleak trip, Mayo is a hell of a long road too. Omagh isn't too far away for me. Is it usual for the Galway games to be in Tuam? If it was Salthill at least you'd get the day out in Galway city. Tuam is an awful bleak spot and that ground they have there is a kip.

Mixed bag, four of the eight teams have new managers for 2023 and will want to hit the ground running, Donegal, Monaghan, Mayo & Roscommon
You'd envisage Galway and Kerry will be coming off a holiday.
Being honest, it's a strange division without Dublin, it was normally the one fixture I looked straight for.

The way the fixtures fall Horse and the opponents we have at home mean we'll get no repeat in 2023 of those electric Spring Saturday nights in Tralee like this year or 2019 when big hitters such as Dublin and Mayo were coming down with their army of supporters.
Can't imagine Monaghan or the Rossie on a Saturday night being much of an attraction to those who may not be regular League attenders. Maybe if Armagh are going well (and given the Donaghy factor) that will probably be the pick of three homes games to put under Saturday night lights.
Given the usually appalling weather in late Jan/Feb it will be a slog, as I said, hitting the road for distant spots like Ballybofey, Omagh, Castlebar and Tuam. Might be small crowds of Kerry faithful at all of them, esp when you throw in the skyrocketing price of fuel over last 12 months.

You know, on reflection, Division one and it’s draw or competitiveness will be in a poorer place without Dublin.

1st League game is away to Donegal on January 29th, the fixtures are as follows:
Donegal (A) Jan 29th Monaghan (H) Feb 4/5 Mayo (A) Feb 18/19 Armagh (H) Feb 25/26 Tyrone (A) March 4/5 Roscommon (H) March 18/19 Galway (A) March 25/26
League Final April 2nd
Considering we probably got the 2 shortest trips (Mayo & Galway) as away games it wasn't such a bad schedule in my mind.
Always gonna be a case of having 3 hours minimum travelling to the away games. In some cases we'll have 5 or 6 hours.
It's been a while since Armagh played down here so I can see a good crowd travelling down for it, they really brought a great atmosphere to their game vs Galway in June.

You know, on reflection, Division one and it’s draw or competitiveness will be in a poorer place without Dublin. They've no one to blame for that but themselves - D2 can be a hard slog itself. While on paper Dublin should be easily topping the table you wonder if a few of the old guard with all their medals will have the stomach to be battling the likes of Clare in a bleak, wild and wet Sunday in Ennis?!! And I'd say they'll be plenty of teams loving the chance to have a cut off them and drag them into a dogfight on their own patch. A bad start and they could be in trouble of being stuck down there - its not as if they showed much fight in D1 last spring! But no doubt the GAA will find a way to give them 5 home games, all on Saturday night in Croke Park and no doubt RTE will cover everyone of them live

First game in donegal will be crucial a win there and we are in mix for league final lose and a bit of pressure is on. Also i feel every team will be looking to our game as the litmus test. Usually dublin especially in croke park has been where teams look to see where they are at. It makes for an interesting spring anyway!
I think ww need to be looking at a few things in the league namely cover at 3 and 6 in defence. Breen and maybe okunbar could be options. Midfield there could be 2 spots up for grabs would darragh Lyne be worth a look? Up front we need a couple aswell a wing forward as SOB isnt getting any younger (he was fantastic in later stages last year i felt). Also id love to see darragh roche given a shot he is different from what we have more direct and has a good understanding with the brothers clifford already.

I can’t see us being anywhere near relegation trouble. Since 2019 we have won most games that we’ve played in the league. I don’t see that changing dramatically unless we’re missing key players.

Even missing key players, I can't see us struggling. The example is we put Mayo to the sword in the league final this year without Seanie. Even excluding any new comers wanting to make an impression, looking at the panel players that we had this year would trouble most county teams. Sure EK alone would survive well in division two ... not to mind the rest if the County included.

LOL a few months on from winning the AI to go with a third league on the trot and people are speculating about our chances of survival in Division 1. This really is the ultimate in pessimism.
You'd only get it in Kerry. Mayo lads will be convinced they're going to do the League, AI and Champions League treble.

With the new system of the split calendar the demands on the county players is more prolonged. They're going from league to championship (in Kerry's case this will be in reality up to the last day, or 2 weeks before the last day!) To county championship, club championship. With maybe a month off at December.
Of all those competitions, I'd say the national League is the least attractive to the players to win.
We should stay in Division 1 in 2024, and if hopefully noone gets injuries in the process, I'd say everyone involved would consider it a success.

To be honest this is an away game against a Donegal team that are punching above their weight. They struggled in games without Murphy and he has another year on him again. As All Ireland champions we should be able to beat them. Having 1 tough game in Munster, with no disrespect to Waterford or Tipperary, isn't enough to prepare for the group stages. I'm expecting Jack O'Connor using the League to prime the team for the championship. Monaghan and Armagh should be wins. Mayo away is tough, and with a star studded backroom team round 3 might be when teams already start to worry about relegation. A Mayo team in trouble will be tough to beat. Tyrone, Galway and Roscommon are probably the toughest games. Especially Tyrone and Galway, both with a score to settle. So it comes down to winning those games, personally I'm sure we can win the league unbeaten, and if we do we have a league final. If we lose those 3 games, we might still get to a league final depending on other results. We just can't afford to lose to Donegal, Armagh, Monaghan and Armagh. Of the other teams Roscommon is the biggest banana peel in my opinion, you never know what team will show up. All in all, I think Jack will want to win the league and so do the team.

All were All champions in the same decade not so long ago. All four are going through some changes and only two can promote. With O'Rourke in Meath and Derry improving massively the last few years is it strange to think that it is not that obvious that Dublin will get promoted? Something is not right in Dublin and the longer they go without winning games the more they will get frustrated.

I think this will be a more challenging league for Kerry.
What if any hangover may be there after winning everything last year.
Tough away games in Donegal, Mayo, Tyrone and Galway. No easy games there.
I'd expect Kerry win all their home games however.
Armagh seems the best of the home games and interestingly there's no accommodation in Tralee for that weekend.
I'd expect to see a good league from Mayo under new management and with injured lads back.
Tyrone to bounce back to restore some pride.
Monaghan and Roscommon to go down.

Hermit - the hay-shed in Tuam is the worst stand I have been in ever - leaks in the roof, and the seats were built for children - there isnt actually enough leg-room for adults. Hopefully its on in Salthill at the end of March - a night in Galway would be nice.

Tuam is the heartland though. Most players over the years have come from a radius of 15 miles around it. They love playing there.
As for the league, wont some counties (for whom getting to the provincial final is far from certain) be taking the league more seriously in 2023?

All Division 1 sides are safe when it comes to qualifying for the Sam Maguire so not a factor - Division 2 sides will be watching out for places as they are at risk if D3 or D4 sides make a provincial final and they do not.

Yes but two of the division one sides will be in division 2 next year and will have to be careful then. Question for anybody who knows regarding the two teams demoted from a division - are they ranked at the top of the division they are going into? Mainly impacts teams demoted from D1 - are they ranked 9th and 10th when it comes to rankings with regard to entry to the senior AI. If they are they are also relatively safe for that year in that it would take all 8 provincial finalists being from D3 and D4 (or possibly bottom of D2) to knock them out of the AI series.

I don't know tbh but I'd guess they still ranked 7 and 8 until season is over. The 2 teams promoted from division 2 will be ranked 7/8. The 2 teams relegated from division 1 will be ranked 9/10.

Also the team who wins the Division 2 League Final will be ranked 7th even if they weren't top after the 7 regular games. It's the same for all the league finals. The winner is ranked higher than the loser even if the winner of the final finishes lower than the loser after the regular rounds. This gives a bit more importance to the league finals.

The division 3 League final will be very significant. The team ranked 16 will not make the senior championship as a division 4 team is guaranteed a place in the Connacht final. Also, if Westmeath do not make the division 3 final, as Tailteann cup winners they will replace the task ranked 15 in the senior championship. It could end up that neither of the division 3 finalists play in the senior championship. At most one of them will.

Good luck with getting reasonable priced accommodation for a family. Hotels are unusually busy and will be for some time for non tourism reasons and prices everywhere are ridiculous. Looked at Westport for the Mayo game last week and it's insanely priced
