This man was born in Kerry and won four senior All-Ireland medals. A lot of those around you might say. Not so. These were hurling medals! Clifford - cannot recall his first name though. The player was John Quirke. He played back in the 1930/1940 era with Cork . I think Cork won four in a row back then. John was born in the well known Kerry hurling stronghold of Milltown. I am not sure what age he was when the family migrated to Cork. |

Wasn’t Mary Geaney an extraordinary sports star. As far as I know she was an acclaimed golfer as well. As Ciarraimick said , she is a sister of Dr. Dave Geaney. Another brother , Dick, captained Kerry in an All-Ireland minor final. Unfortunately they were beaten by Derry.
A Con Geaney won a senior medal back in the thirties. I wonder would he be a relation?
As I have mentioned golf. This man won a senior medal with Kerry and represented Ireland at golf. Fairly easy I think.

Brilliant Aodhán well done I'm impressed. Mary Geaney was in college in Cork and captained Cork to a camóige all ireland and won a few more as Kerry did nt have a camóige team. She captained Kerry ladies to success in 76 all ireland and was an international hockey player. Her brother Dave won 2 all Irelands and was Kerry team Doctor. Would be distantly related to the Dingle Geaney. Well done. Maith an fhear. The Geaneys are also the answer to my question !! Con played for Kerry in the 1932 national league final vs Cork & Dr Dave ( son) played in the 1959 final vs Derry - Kerry did not win a league title in between those victories which is hard to understand given as they won a good few All Irelands in that period. Bedsides Mary, another brother, Dick played Kerry minor in the 60s. |

Dick Spring was another exceptional sports man. Played hurling and football for Kerry and for Crotta and KoR respectively and played rugby for Ireland. We wont mention that "dropped ball"!

Johnny Quirke was regarded as one of Cork’s finest hurlers - his family moved to Cork when he was about 3/4 years of age; he played as a wing forward but was moved to centre back when Cork played Limerick in an effort to curb Mick Mackey and I think played centre back thereafter. |

Would the Boyles from Ballyduff have a similar claim in recent times? Not sure if they are all brothers but Liam, Mikey and Padraig all played minor if I am not mistaken? |

Absolutely great reading through knowledgeable posts from other lads. Here, here - this could be really great as it fleshes out the greatness that makes the GAA what it is - just so ye wouldn't forget the Ballydonoghoors, Bunyan brothers both won AI medals in '75 with baby Robert captaining the minors. Funny enough but I know the laddo who scored a vital goal that had Robert captain, apparently the laddo was a visionary, in that moment he saw there was nobody in goals. His name escapes me but I often see him in the mirror! Husband and wife Mick and Peggy Finucane donned the jersey in the same hour, Peggy in camogie. Peggy also and along with a few others often carted an entire team on 4 wheels, ah we'd share that record with most parishes. Now here's another Ballydonoghoor record, there was 2 points at the death in a parish league game and didn't a laddo hit the crossbar which was a bit of twine, it didn't come back and as it went between the posts it had to be a score, but it was neither a point nor a goal, so, yes, it could only be 2 points. And not a word of dissent and which was even more of a record - imagine, not a fist raised let alone killed or even hospitalised - now there's one for them rules latchicoes at congress! Did some minor also play senior for his county on AI football final day - Galway? Heard they won both but that may have been fanciful. Is there sets of brothers/sisters playing against each other in a few games at the moment? And wasn't Brendan Lynch the only one ever to play in 60, 70 and 80 minute AI finals? And then there was 2 brothers sidelined in an AI final, Derry O'Shea and then his brother Thorny's finger ended up in the ref's eye - ah sure why let the truth in the way of a good story! The late Jack Kissane of Ballydonoghue won an AI with Galway and I understand there was many more. Veteran, and Mandad if he is still contributing, would have a few right tales to tell here. |

Two sets of brothers were sent off playing for Kerry in the senior football championship. The surname was more or less the same on both occasions.

Hermit, I have it in my mind that Kerry won an All Ireland in about 1939 wearing the Dingle club Jersey. So red and white. I'm sure that Dingle got them in Cork and they were in fact Cork County Jerseys! There was an article in the examiner about this a few years back. If so it's another great trivia question. This Kerry footballer won an All-Ireland minor medal in 1962. He was subsequently added to the substitutes list for the senior final . Kerry won that senior final as well but I am not sure if this man got a senior medal that day. He did win his senior medal later on.

In 1982 football final there were 6 steps of brothers involved and 2 sets of cousins involved. I ll start of with two sets of brothers Matt and Richie Connor (Offaly) and Tomas and Liam Connor (Offaly) and the two syes were cousins so there is another set of cousins involved and 4 more sets of brothers. I'll be very impressed if anyone gets the fourth one - its technically correct but most people would not have know that match was actually for the All Ireland!
