Whatever decisions they make on the field of play, referees living in Dublin should not be reffing Dublin games. Not fair on the refs. The refs in question should have enough self awareness and self respect to decline such games. Paul Rouse in his book on the very first All Ireland hurling final between Tipp and Galway describes the appointment of the ref....i think it was in Birr..... the appointed ref declined to ref the game as he had close affiliations to Tipp. He was held in such high esteem that both teams told him that they were quite happy for him to do so. He agreed to ref the game. I think he even manufactured the sliother and all.... Mind you id say he regretted his decision as all hell broke loose early in the game. I cant recall if it was abandoned but it was held up for ages over a disputed goal.

One of the most outrageous decisions I have seen was made by David Gough against Dublin , not sure of year . The umpire at the Hill 16 end waved a Dublin effort wide with David Gough out around the midfield area. Kevin MacMenamon turned around to his club mate, Mr. Gough , and signaled a forty five. David Gough duly obliged , over ruling his umpire. Appalling. Although, Mr. Gough is probably the best out there he should be allowed sit by the fireside for Kerry/Dublin matches. When I am a neutral spectator I always wish to see a real contest. Not when Kerry are involved . I always want us to be comfortably ahead . In a close contest there is too much scope for a referee to , wittingly or unwittingly , determine the outcome of a match. 2016 was the wide becoming a 45. The main issue with Mr Gough is his work with Dublin's Cumann na mBunscol. While I respect the volunteer work, it does call into question his ability to referee Dublin games. His name was even on compliment slips sent with complimentary tickets given out by the Cumann for the 2019 final that he was reffing. 😂 He might as well have wrote "Here Dublin supporters is a free ticket to the final Dublin are in that I'm reffing. My phone number and email is there also." He should never have been given the role given his ties. It's unfair on the referee. No referee will tell the GAA no to a final. I'm not saying he shouldn't ref, just not Meath or Dublin games. If people think I'm being harsh, I refer to Laois v Dublin in the late 00s. The referee initially chosen was from Kerry and after Dublin complained the Laois manager and the referee were from the same Kerry club, the official was changed. Can someone tell me how one is fine and the other warrants a change? We have 4 provinces, the ref team comes from the two provinces (or maybe 3) not involved. It cuts out the rubbish about referee's allegiance. Also one caveat, no Cavan referees named Joseph should referee finals involving Dublin. What's the betting on Joe McQuillan or David Gough getting the semi final nod v Dublin (should both progress through the front door)?

The game with the phantom 45 was the same one where Crowley was hammered by McManamon but Gough saw nothing. In fairness, he redeemed himself somewhat in the 2019 final and, from a fairness point of view, I wouldn't have a problem with him reffing us again. The other fella though, no way, never ever.

Do you mean he reffed the game very well in 2019 or the decisions swung towards Kerry?
