The u20 league starts this weekend with Kerry away to Cork. The match is on Saturday at 2 in Clonakilty. Kerry’s other game in the league part of the competition is away to Galway. I don’t know why Kerry have 2 away games and Galway have 2 home games, it seems unfair to me. Declan has had his bedding in year now so I’m looking forward to seeing how they go under him. It’ll be interesting if he’ll go with what he perceives as his strongest side right through the league in the buildup to championship or whether he’ll give every player on the panel a run and use it as a sort of trial for the championship team.

What kind of a team do we have for the u20 this year? As we’ve said for the last 6 or 7 years, it’ll be strong again. It’ll be made up of the 2019 and 2020 minor teams. Neither team won the All Ireland but both teams were good enough to. Cork won it in 2019 even though Kerry had beaten them twice and in 2020 we had it only for a late goal from Derry. Hopefully the lack of a minor medal might prove to be a positive thing at u20 level in that it will drive them on.

One of those very good Cork minors has gone to Rugby i think More than one I believe All I know of is Patrick Campbell who wore number 14 for the Cork Minors in 2019 is now playing with Munster. He lined out in the Champions Cup when they were missing all the players and kept his place for the next game. Conor Corbett their standout player who destroyed us last year has done the cruciate so they’re down him too.

They would be the 4 standout players in my opinion as well along with Devon Burns in goals. Alan Dineen, Oisin Maunsell, Joe Linehan, Eoghan O’Sullivan and Jack O’Connor are others who I’d imagine will have a big role to play.

I am going to head over to pairc ui chaoimh this evening to see how we fair out. I’ve taken great interest in the underage teams over the years and would’ve seen quite a lot of the players on show. I am looking forward to see can the players push on from the few years of success they had at minor. While this certain age group wouldn’t be flourishing with all Ireland winners in comparison to previous years I think this team can cause great excitement and looks very promising for the year ahead. I look forward to seeing Devon Burns in goal again I thought he may have been a bit unlucky not to break into the starting 15 last year but seems to have had a good year with his club and was a truly outstanding minor. I believe he won an all star at minor grade along with young Dylan Geaney. I look forward to seeing him also I would’ve watched him with dingle and ucc this year and he has been very good again. Hopefully he can push on with the help of William shine who was brilliant for the sem last weekend in the corn ui mhuiri final he really impressed me. Thomas O Donnell is another young lad who looks quite promising at centre forward. Sean O Brien has the potential to be the stand out player on this team though in my view. I watched him with beaufort last year in Fitzgerald’s stadium against na gaeil and he seemed to be head and shoulders above everyone on the day which included 2 Kerry senior midfielders which was some feat for the young man. Armin Heinrich is a real force as well at centre back for such a young lad he has a brilliant presence and physique which will be needed especially come championship. I was surprised not to see Adam Curran start maybe he has picked up an injury as he was another brilliant minor and will be interesting to see will he kick on from that minor campaign. A young man who has certainly kicked on from being on the extended panel of the Kerry minors is Enda O’ Connor from na gaeil. A younger brother of Diarmuid when asked many na gaeil people would say Enda has been their best player in the last 12 months. Being from Tralee myself I watched na gaeil and the stacks closely this year and if you watched saint brendans during the championship you would’ve have seen the performances of Enda. His marauding runs forward and tigerish defending was a joy to watch and I hope he will be given somewhat of the same role this evening. I look forward to heading over to watch the young lads play this evening and hopefully the weather holds up and we get a decent game of football and come away with a bit more information on the year ahead. I fancy this Kerry team to go a long way this year and truly hope they do, starting with a good team performance and a win on the road today. Roll on half 5
