Rahillys won the second half not that it mattes really but its a pity Moran and Mush got injured as they are massive players for the Narries. I thought the reff favoured Stacks and he even called a mark for Star in the first half and gave Star a handy free in the second half when Star pulled his man to the ground also M O'Donnell should have seen black, these are small things but the matter over 60 odd minutes. Anyway best of luck to Stacks in munster. I’ll have to watch it back on the frees as I didn’t see a whole pile wrong, I though rahillys should have gotten more frees but then again there is the factor of me being very biased. I almost apply the logic that if I think the ref only deprived us of 5 or so frees that he was probably very fair as the default of every clubman is to assume that they have been done out of a few fees! The mark was one i was surprised by myself as I think Donaghy took a few steps before calling it so I was surprised a free out wasn’t given there. However KOR were never going to win after losing both David & Mush within 5 mins of throw in, it was just too high a hill to climb It’s almost unheard of bad luck to lose 2 intercounty players so early in such a big match. I thought Cormac, Con and Jack were excellent today for us

Austin Stacks O-13. Kerins O’Rahillys 0-10. HT 0-8. 0-4
A massive throng were blessed with a beautiful day and a game of reasonable quality even though Strand Road’s calamity before and in the first few minutes of the game, to a large extent, determined the outcome of the match. Gavin O’Brien seemed to injure himself in the warm up . This seems to becoming increasingly common. However, it was the sight of that wonderful man, David Moran, disconsolately limping off which tore the heart out of the game , for neutrals anyway. My heart broke for this model sportsman on so many levels. First of all we were being deprived of witnessing the contribution of a a player who was certainly going to be one of the principal actors in ASP. Also we were going to be deprived of appraising how the pretender, Joseph O’Connor , would fare against the champion midfielder. Above all, I felt sad for the man himself. Here he was in a county final with a chance to pilot his club to glory and , as a not inconsiderable bonus, to captain Kerry next year and , who knows, to emulate his Dad in captaining leading Kerry to the summit in 2022. A cruel twist of fate denied him and us of so many dreamlike possibilities and could mean that we may never see him in the green and gold again. My tired old eyes fill up at the prospect.
Having paid homage to David , it is now incumbent on me to pay tribute to Austin Stacks. It is conceivable that , regardless of the loss of David and Gavin , they would still have triumphed. Their defence is mean enough to concede only the minimum to opposing forwards , their transition to attack is lighting fast , that attack is smart and slick , their midfield of Joseph and the under rated Greg Horan are a match for most and of course they have that old witch doctor at fourteen who is still liable to up scuttle a nation. They are a formidable unit.
It must be said that Con Barrett also went off for while. He was treated for a long while for a head injury and when he eventually got up he momentarily stumbled. I was surprised to see him come back on and while he did play well for some time after his resumption he did fade and I wonder was it medically appropriate for him to be allowed back on.
A couple of noteworthy incidents in that half: KD seemed to call for a mark , changed his mind and wasn’t penalised for it. The game was being played in a fairly good spirit but attitudes appeared to change late in the half after an off the ball incident involving Tommy Walsh and Dylan Casey. Dylan was on the canvas and Tommy got a yellow card. No idea what happened. Not long afterwards KD got a yellow for a clothes line tackle on Tommy. To Tommy’ s credit he got up straight away. Shane Foley made a great save after a mesmerising Stacks movement.
Sean Quilter, as is his wont made an impact when he came on in the second half. Converted his mark and pointed a free or two. Joseph O’Conor scored a fine point after a very incisive run. Shane Foley made another great save in this half from Greg Horan. It is significant that Wayne Guthrie was not called upon to save any testing shot. He was absolutely assured nevertheless , particularly with the high ball. Wayne is another string in the bow of the Rockies. Jack Savage kicked a couple of glorious points in the second half even though Cormac Coffey’s effort was possibly the score of the match. Joseph made another powerful run which resulted in a foul . Needless to say Dead Eye Dick , I mean Dead Eye Darragh, converted.
In spite of a Herculean effort , Strand Road never came closer than three in that half and , unlike Austin Stacks, rarely looked like scoring a goal. Testament to a well organised defence.
Future Kerry prospects ? Joseph O’Connor certainly advanced his cause again, He is extremely athletic, tireless worker and a tough devil too. There are times when he looks as if he is not blessed with natural skills but Jack could get to work on that. Dylan Casey with dependability rather than flamboyance as his party piece. . Greg Horan is another solid citizen. Jack O’Shea was less prominent than usual. Conor Jordan of course has migrated across the Shannon. Was it wise to let him go?
We need to talk about Jack Savage! That man is extravagantly talented . He had a great game today. Very comfortable on the ball, clever and a lovely kicker from play or frees. But, but. His temperament. Any flare up any where seems to magnetically lure him to the scene. Seems to be constantly mouthing to the referee. Now, he does get a lot of attention from opponents without always getting justice from the officials. How much of that is self inflicted and if you are a referee , being human, you might be inclined to turn a blind eye to a couple of legitimate frees for Jack, which I felt the referee occasionally did today. Ability wise , I would have Jack in with Jack in a heart beat. Temperamentally, a lot of work preparatory work needs to be done.

Commiserations to all Narries but Stacks deserved it on the day. Great performances from Jack Savage and from Joe O'Connor in particular. It would have been interesting to see how O'Connor fared against Moran but it wasn't to be. As it was, KOR had no answer to his surging runs which invariably led to a score.
Fantastic to be in Tralee surrounded by people and by atmosphere again. A badly needed glimpse of normality. And sure we were just haunted with the weather.

Cormac Jack Con and Tommy were very good , Hayes is great to watch as well.

Jack ended up having to forage for ball and try to create attacks from inside his own 45 which wouldnt have been the case had the injuries not happened.

Donaghy ever the saviour.
What was that Dwyer said in defeat - something about looking good for next year? If Moran plays on, etc.

I don’t think David will be back for Kerry Joe O Connor ignored last year needs a chance this year And Sean Quilter seems to impact significantly every time he enters the fray another who might need to be looked at

Jack was the most talented footballer on the pitch today. He is an incredibly hard worker too. It would be great to see him get a chance with Kerry again. He did well in 2017 when he was involved.

Rahillys got a point in the first half that was wide, right in front of where I was standing. A few funny decisions by referee. Donaghey was lucky for his high challenge on Tommy Walsh. Could have been a few more cards issued.

Decent game, terrific atmosphere.
I thought Stacks were very comfortable and largely kept Strand Road at arms length throughout without too much bother.
Certainly bad luck for KoR to lose DM and GoB but stacks strength in depth vastly superior and this will become manifest in next few years as Stacks have savage talent coming through and their age profile is so young - this is not the case with strand road.
From a Kerry perspective, Dylan Casey at 21 is already better than some of Kerrys starters and miles better than some in the squad. Joe OConnor also a banker for the Kerry squad. C Coffee and TW best for St Road. Jack a very good club player but not a county man for me - would be swallowed whole by Tyrone, Donegal, Dublin and the like.

I thought the game was over when David Moran went off following the Gavin O Brien non start. Probably the best midfielder in the country going off a club game after 5 minutes. Any discussion on the game that followed is meaningless. After that we went through the formalities for another 55 minutes. The surprise is that the winning margin was only 3 points.
As far as the county team is concerned Joe O'Connor was the only one that looked the part. Disappointingly, he passed a lot of possession back to players behind him. Unfortunately, I don't think Jack will have a problem with that.

I think this largely sums up the game for me, lot of talk of ref but being honest and I'm a neutral, though he was fair and consulted his officials everytime if rewuited. There were two high challenges one on Joe O'Connor and one on Tommy Walsh, in fairness to both, they got straight up and got on with it. Hard to see a guaranteed Rockie starter in the county side to captain, Joe and Dylan will be there or there abouts but guaranteed is a different story.

Don't get the above but Valentia island is even further, three starters yesterday played senior for other clubs, the Sullivan brothers who now have won county championship with a divisional and a club side and the losing centre back for Strand Road, Shane Brosnan played senior for Blennerville before transferring in over the bridge.

The standard of reporting in the paper is very weak with zero analysis. A min by minute of he scored then he scored

For the neutrals yesterday the sight of Gavin O Brien not starting, David Moran coming off after 5 minutes and Con Barrett going down a couple of minutes later would have made them question their decision to go to this game.
While Stacks just stuck admirably to their task, Rahillys never really showed the belief they could win without their injured stars. However credit must be given to them because at 12 points to 6 I feared the last 20 minutes of the game could turn nasty but Rahillys dug deep and made the end a small bit exciting.
Can Stacks have a real punt at the all Ireland? Their game plan is suited to football in December, January and February and that gives them a chance. I think their lack of a real top class scoring forward will probably cost them against better opposition.

Don't under estimate the loss of Donagh Buckley either - he was an ever present from the first league game in Kenmare this year. Lady luck abandoned Rahillys this week but that is what can happen in sport. When are Stacks out next? - Newcastlewest I think. Hope they can keep their season going and bring home a Munster title - been a great season for them.

Well done to the Rockies, they are an impressive outfit. Great fitness and organisation and they should have a real say in the Munster club now and who knows what might come after that.
Hard luck to the Narries, it was cruel fate to see so many of their key men being forced to sit in the dugout after only a few minutes. It gave them a mountain to climb and they never could scale it.
But I have to say I was surprised Strand Road left it so late to go route one into Tommy. He did well under a few of those late high balls and if they had tried that tactic a little earlier they might have got the goal they were looking for.
Not the greatest match ever, it petered out badly in the second half but the atmosphere before the throw-in was brilliant. It was magnificent to see the Pairc so full and thank God the weather stayed dry.
Tralee was buzzing and the sights around Rock St before the supporters marched to the ground were class. It was nice to enjoy a bit of a pub crawl afterwards in the hometown before the new restrictions come back in tomorrow.
I hope a few players on display today might be brought into Jack's panel in the next few weeks. And I pray a certain D. Moran will get over the injury quick and be seen again in the green and gold next spring. We still need you David, you'll be retired long enough!!

Temperamentally, a lot of work preparatory work needs to be done. top class report Veteran, great read and capture the match story perfectly. I think a few guys definitely need to be looked at by Jack, I have constantly mentioned that we need to strengthen our squad in kerry, especially from 20 to 35, I feel our squad development has been managed poorly over the last few years, I just don’t see our current extended panel have been of any threat in this years championship, #refresh

Losing Gavin O’Brien & David was just too much - agree on the frees, Stacks looked to get them easier - ref issued a yellow card to Michael O’Donnell which was a textbook black - took out Conor Hayes off the ball. Jack Savage too found it hard to get frees. At the end of the day Stacks had the luck & more strength in depth. Agree - Rahillys caught no break this week and can hold their heads high with their never say die attitude. They were down three influential starters by the 5th minute having already been short two others for the entire campaign. Definitely a bridge too far for them this year. Stacks will enjoy the win and bragging rights - it was their year and congratulations are deserved. Who were the 2 others that were missing all year? Down that number of players is a significant burden in any game. Stacks rightly so the best team but got their bit of luck all year. Diarmuid O'Connor going off in the semi final and should have been beaten.

Curraheen is a lot closer to the strand than it is to the rock, don’t ever lose sight of that Sull! Don't get the above but Valentia island is even further, three starters yesterday played senior for other clubs, the Sullivan brothers who now have won county championship with a divisional and a club side and the losing centre back for Strand Road, Shane Brosnan played senior for Blennerville before transferring in over the bridge.
I was referring to Sullys ties to Kerry and how he should be a biased strand road man like myself.
My allegiances end at the bridge by the Windmill
