The timing is an issue for those based up the country - no train back to Dublin after the game. Checked it out a few weeks back and the ticket, train, spending money & accommodation was just gona be too much accommodation prices in Cork are ridiculous. Some places asking €300 for a single room, I found somewhere but its going to cost me on taxis. Solo female traveller so won't be walking through a strange city alone.Hoping for a Killarney trip for Super 8's. Accommodation seems to be gone through the roof again in Ireland post recession. Very bad value for money.

I agree that the timing is an issue for people . I think the GAA are making a mistake by fixing so many matches for 7pm. It is worse of course for the NFL. Expecting people to travel long distances in the dark of winter is madness.

Realistically its an overnight for anyone travelling from Dublin ..petrol...meal.. tickets, a few drinks.... 300 euro.... so you would expect something in return other than what we got last year. Now, going to play Galway in Salthill or Mayo in Castlebar or Tyrone in Omagh or Donegal above in Letterkenny at 7pm on a saturday evening... thats a different kettle of fish and well worth the time and money. In the 70s you had 3 games.... the QF v Cork in mid July. The semifinal...often a cakewalk in mid August and final in mid Sept. Now there are effectively 3 QF games in July. The semifinal and final are run off much quicker after the 3 QFs games. You cant blame people for being judicious about which games they select to go to as most people cant go to every game due to work, family committments, finances ...whatever. And for me there has to be the prospect of a contest.

They have fixed Down v Mayo for 7pm on a saturday evening in Newry.
Presume TV coverage is the driver for it.

Saw on the mayo forum they are giving out about the 7pm throw in. Think is much better than a 3pm on Sunday as your not driving back for work the next morning.

I hope I am not infringing on Killarney Advertiser rights and if I am there will be some Laker will be on my case - this is a very interesting view of our options, a Kerry Depth Chart they call it -that's a new one on me! . PS Also no offense to Michael Healy-Rae for contributing here when he says on The Late Late that we should instead be walking the dog or going to a dance or the pub - us night owl poets deserve more respect and in any event all those important jobs have been attended to! Ah why didn't he say we could be writing a poem? Anyway here's the pic, and if anyone can make it bigger or better, it is on p.55 at www.killarneyadvertiser.ie/read-killarney-advertiser-online-5/Just made that bigger there. You can see it was written by a killarney man anyway. Who is D Sheahan at full back. It doesnt really take into account that lads can play different. Or that if someone can be a alternatvive to a postion but start some where else? Look at full back he has Sherwood / Morley but none of them mentioned as center back. Looking at the graphic I would be worried about a full forward line that has Geaney, JOD and Clifford as the starters. The drop off in standard to the bench is massive in scoring terms. K Spillane hasn't done anything with kerry, ditto shaw,

All in all I think Kerry get good support and nobody is expected to get to every game, we all attend matches within a few hours of our bases and which is all that can be realistically expected. Contributing on here is also helpful.
Fixtures have many constraints we wouldn't be aware of, a single event can be a nightmare to schedule actually and forget about pleasing everyone, though Mayo in Newry at 7pm on a Sat evening is crazy, kids won't be travelling and they are the future. Still we have it all on the box in our living room so it ain't so bad.

Another stat is the number of u20s bypassing straight to the senior panel - a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is is called, though they'd yet have to perform! Vital Statistics of another kind!

Danny Sheahan is a Legion player and a panelist this year. Whatever about the future, he would not be in the thinking for this championship.
With regard to Killian Spillane – I believe he is going very well in training and has come on a ton this year. He certainly has all the skill and physique but up to now he just appeared not to have enough urgency about him. If he could get that part of his game right I could see him being a viable option in the full forward line.

The introduction of the "Back door" or the qualifier system a few years ago has done unexpected harm. While it serves in initial purpose of giving counties the opportunity to have more than just one championship match per year, it has had the knock on affect of diminishing the integrity of the provincial system, by making available a plan B. I think the fixing of the Mayo game in Newry @ 7pm on a Saturday evening is daft but its intended as a bit of a kicking as punishment for what might be considered by the suits in Croke park as Mayo not giving the Connaught championship their full attention and thereby undervalue that element of the competition. The current provincial system is at a crossroads in terms of whether it can be revived or if it should be discarded. For now they'll make the qualifiers awkward to make the provincial route more attractive. It's completely understand that there can be logistical and financial difficulties in getting to matches but I don't think that our players should be denied our support solely to amend a problem not of their making, and definitely not because there's a belief that they're not good enough. Our young guys need as much support as they can get, and it does actually matter to them.

Must say the Killarney Advertiser depth chart made for very grim reading - several has beens and never will be's and all pointing to the fact that we are miles behind Dublin where depth is concerned.
WRT to K. Spillane, will believe it when I see it. Was very poor for UCC all throughout Sigerson and also very poor in any league games he featured. However, maybe the hard ground has seen him turn his form around - or maybe he is being marked by one of the lesser footballing mortals from the depth chart!

I think the depth chart is a good idea but, very poorly put together in this case.
A more accurate chart in my estimate is based on all players for a position within reason. You can pick your config from the options.
Goalkeepers: Ryan / Kelly
Corner Back: Foley / Tom O'Sullivan / Graham O'Sullivan / Enright / Young / Lyne
Full Back: Morely / Sherwood / Foley
Wing Back: Murphy / O'Sullivan / White / Crowley / Young / Griffin / Morley / Enright
Centre Back: Sherwood / Morley / Murphy / Young / Crowley
MF: Moran / Barry / DOC / A Spillane / Griffin / SOS / Walsh
Wing Forward: Moynihan / DOC / Burns / SOB / GOB / SOS / A Spillane / M Geaney / J Lyne
Centre Forward: SOS / Walsh / M Geaney / Murphy / JOD
Corner Forward / Full Forward: Clifford / P Geaney / JOD / SOB / K Spillane / Walsh

Is there any updates with injuries? As with SeanieSe, Dara Moynihan, JOD, Barry JOD doubtful - hamstring v Clare. This is what i heard too but i normally don't write on such things unless official. One contributor told me there at least 10 forwards in the county as good as a Conor Cox. Well if there is, are they in the Kerry panel right now? Do we have scoring power cover for JOD and Paul Geaney? JOD has a terrible injury record and unfortunately doesn't recover that fast. Paul Geaney's form has been erratic and injuries have played a big part. For all the talk about depth of talent, especially for the inside line - this campaign will tell the tale.

Also interesting articles in today's Indo re imbalance in GAA financial allocations, the first one says enough and the second appears to look at it from another angle! Paul Coady: 'Hurling counties like Carlow must make noise or they will fall away into obscurity' 'Semi-professionalism is like the GAA's Brexit and we're teetering on the edge of a cliff right now'

You cannot point at success at one level and state categorically that it will translate to another. Clearly, minor success doesn’t always translate to senior success and the most recent history of our u20 and u21 is not very encouraging (accepting the unavailability of a few of the better lads). On average, you get one or two decent players from any minor team – if you are lucky.
Underage success is great, but it isn't an infallible barometer for future senior success. There are so many influences in the development of young lads that will come in the equation and right now I fear that we may be expecting too much from our minor achievements. Perhaps our development system, with all its merits, is giving us false optimism.

Ultimately it will catch up on a team going forward. Take Darragh O Se, Seamus Moynihan & Maurice Fitzgerald out of the Kerry team between 1996-2000 you have a huge problem. Take one of these great players out and you are still left with a huge void in the team.
