Reidy was decent but got some game time in the league and never really impressed. Mossy Lyons was a very good footballer in my opinion but just came along when we had some great backs, did he not get a bad injury or 2? He played every championship game in 07 when Kerry won the All-Ireland.

Mossy had a short career but was a very good player and solid.Never let Kerry down.Padraig Reidy another good corner back that had a short career. Padraig Reidy was a funny one to me. Was straight onto panel & team at a young age but then dropped off as quick while still seeming to be playing well for St Kieran’s in the co. Championship. Stephen O’ Sullivan from Skellig Rangers was similar to this without getting on the starting team. Was a mainstay of South Kerry through the noughties while he never got back to the Kerry after 2000 Stephen o Sullivan is an odd one. Particularly when Kerry struggling with Full Back during most of the 2000s.

He played in Munster championship in 09 but kinda drifted away.He was unlucky as he certainly played his part.

No more than ourselves managers see players differently.I remember Donncha Walsh play in the league under Paidi in 2003 and reading an article that he could be the next big thing in Kerry.Jack ignored him and did nt play for Kerry again for 4 or 5 years till Pat O Shea came in. Jack Sherwood while given his debut by Fitzmaurice was kind of dispatched by Fitzmaurice again before being recalled by PK and was very influential. Aodhan Mac Gearailt ,Noel Kennelly.William Kirby were in and out of teams regularly. Another player that had a short eniugh career was Donal Daly(a very honest hard working player).

According to Terrace Talk website, Padraig Reidy played first few games of 2011 League and was gone after that. Another Reidy, Ger, was on the 2009 panel and was lined up as Diarmuid Murphy's replacement but left the panel in 2010- I think he went abroad for work reasons- wasn't that unusual at the time as our economy went through the floor.

From what I remember him and Kealy were to fight it out during the league but it was clear it was going to be Kealy and he left. In reality I don't think he was ever going to be up to it. I'm not sure where he was even seen as he didn't play underage etc David Hennessy the soccer keeper replaced him from what I remember.

I was given Jimmy Deenihans book recently and just started reading it.One thing struck is the way the players were looked after under Micko s reign. In 1981 Deenihan said they were given £1800 pocket money for their holiday to Oz and USA and flights and hotels paid for.In todays terms it would be the equivalent of €13,500 per player for pocket money.Money no object. Also he got some rough treatment himself while playing with Kerry. He suffered a broken nose and had his teeth knocked out in two seperate incidents against Dublin.Pat O Neill broke his nose but he did nt name the man that broke his teeth. Finally in 6 All Ireland finals he said he only conceded one point. That was to Brendan Lowry (Shane s Dad).

I think Donal Daly had a good run of it in fairness. He came on as a sub in the 97 final and was a starter nearly all the way though until the semi in 2003. I am firmly convinced if we didnt collapse in the second half of the 2002 final he would have got man of the match. I think it was injuries that did for him in the end. More wear and tear than anything drastic. I rememebr a panel member I was friends with around 2003 / 2004 telling me that Daly used have to soak his ankles in buckets of ice after every training session because of the pain

It's an interesting read for giving an insight into how training etc changed so much during that era. It was also the start of PE teaching something quite a few of that Kerry panel were.

Wed, 09 Oct, 2024 - 13:26 Murt Murphy Due to player welfare concerns, and the threat of burnout, it has been decided that most members of the Kerry senior football squad will not line out in district board championships over the next two months.
With the split-season leading to elite players being constantly in action, a break from competitive fare is now on the agenda.
Good call by the players imo.
Might go some way to explain the players fatigue in this year's semifinal. Less is sometimes more!!

I find it hard to believe the players themselves decided on this. Particularly when it says the whole squad.

I don't think this is coming from the players, can't imagine a player coming up with the idea to forget about their club in the local championship,

Is it the "no contact" for November that is driving it from the players "union"?

From the Irish Examiner, Murt Murphy
Due to player welfare concerns, and the threat of burnout, it has been decided that most members of the Kerry senior football squad will not line out in district board championships over the next two months. With the split-season leading to elite players being constantly in action, a break from competitive fare is now on the agenda.
Kerry is an unusual case in having three different championships taking place after the conclusion of the inter-county campaign — club championships, county championship, and district championships. At Tuesday night's Kerry County Board meeting, Beaufort delegate Ken O'Sullivan asked chairman Patrick O'Sullivan if the executive was aware of an instruction to county senior players not to make themselves available for the forthcoming District Board Championships and if the executive is aware of the request, then what is their opinion. The chairman confirmed that the executive had been given the heads-up by a number of clubs that a letter was circulating.
"Basically it is not county board policy to prevent any player for turning out to play for his club," O'Sullivan said. "I spoke to Jack O'Connor about it and he assured me that he had not issued any instructions to Kerry players not to play for their clubs. I spoke to the Kerry captain and he told me that, yes they were hoping (the players) that they would not be asked to line out this year in the local championships. "Because of the length of the season in Kerry, burnout fears that lead to injuries and the fact that the players felt they needed some down time before they return to collective training again with Kerry on December 7th. This is also in line with "zero contact" month sought by the player's body for November. "The danger of burnout for the intercounty player and dual player was well flagged before any decision was taken on the introduction of the split season. The split season was supported by this county and this is one of the downsides of it." He added: "It would be wrong in my view to force players to play in the district board championships when they need a break. The request by the players should be respected. Their service and commitment to the county and to their clubs from underage to senior level has surely earned them the right to have their request to be supported and understood. O'Sullivan also responded to a similar query from Mid Kerry secretary Mike Sayers, who said the stance taken by Kerry players was causing disquiet around the county.
"Players' welfare must come first," the chairman added. "We have three stages for a player during the season — 1, full break, 2 pre-season and 3, season." He emphasised that just 12 clubs would be affected, eight senior and that only the Mid Kerry and East Kerry competitions would be affected. He also reminded that delegates that Dingle or Dr Crokes players will be involved in Munster Club competitions in November anyway, while Austin Stacks or Laune Rangers players will also be in provincial action. The Chairman repeated it was not board policy to prevent players playing, rather a request from the players themselves to have their welfare considered. "Some of the top players carry the heaviest load in regards to game time. No player is prevented from playing, all players in the squad face the same demands as regards training and playing. "In 2024, Kerry panel members and the extended squad played 18 competitive games plus had 100 training sessions and all players play AvB games on the weekends that they are not playing competitive games. Some of these games are as demanding as any club championship games.
"I want to emphasise again that no player is being prevented from playing with anyone; it's the player's decision. If he feels that he is tired or wants a break for his mental health reasons, then the Kerry players want to ensure that he is not left isolated or subjected to undue pressure by a coach or manager to play when he clearly wants a break at this time of the year. "No players from any other county are asked to play three championships once they exit the All-Ireland, whether it's early or late, and to the credit of our players turn out for their clubs in the championships when fresh, fit and free of injury.
"I think on the flip side if a player is feeling burnout and is feeling that either physically or mentally that he needs a break, then on welfare grounds he should be allowed this considering he has to play in three championships."

This could have serious implications for the captaincy in 2025. Do the winners of the district championship have the right to nominate the captain? Lets say if East Kerry win the Co. Final would the Cliffords be prevented from playing in the EK championship? That could be the difference between getting the right, or not, to nominate the captain.

Fossa didn’t win the Ek championship last year. Also, they are not being prevented from playing in the EK championship, the decision is coming from the players themselves. I think it’s the right thing by the way but it does devalue the district championships.

I don’t understand the chairman saying that it only affects the MK and EK championships. Surely if effects all district championships that have clubs with Kerry players (which I imagine is all districts) or was there only some players mentioned in the letters?

I don't understand that bit either. There are Kerry panellists in other Districts not just in Mid and East Kerry. Was he asked to clarify that remark at the meeting or was he questioned by media subsequently about it?

Players that have not played with divisions or clubs in last few weeks are 'allowed' play in district champs For example Jason Foley and Graham O Sullivan are allowed to play, but lets see do they actually I think some players will be privately delighted with this ruling.

That was a bizarre comment to make to be fair. Particularly to say Mid Kerry. It also makes no sense as he says Crokes, Dingle etc will be playing in Munster and that's not an issue.

The chairman has serious matters to address and his comments only highlight them the issue is more to do with the number of competitions and the number of matches within them than the split season. no county has 3 championships in football, this is the issue which the county board must address It is a sad day for the GAA and Kerry GAA when effectively players are almost been encouraged to not play in the divisional championships The chairman also doesnt address the fact that because we have 3 football championships , the hurling championship gets shoehorned into a period when young players are away on J1s and the whole agenda is just get the hurling wrapped up and out of the way to facilitate all the football championships.
