I don't know if I said it here before but somehow the last time Kerry played in the Liam McCarthy I was water boy for their opponents. against who? what year? Cork in Cork in 2004. It was a fairly heavy beating. No scoreboard put up. Cork players were happy to let Kerry players share the water. A Kerry player at one stage asked me how much was left on the clock. There was 20 minutes left. The next game I wasn't waterboy anymore only a PUC steward.

half time
Antrim 3.10 Kerry 1.06
The game was on 7 mins when i logged in and Antrim led by 2.02 to 2 points.
From then on it was a very competitive match with huge endeavour by both sides and a good standard too.
Anttims third goal was a Joe Canning standard effort. Kerry fought back and goaled but sadly Shane drove a penalty narrowly wide shortly afterwards.
10 points down yet i feel Kerry are very much in the game.

Kerry players gave everything they had. They can hold their heads up. At times they tried to put together attacking moves that broke down in the conditions. If they meet in the final Kerry will have to be more direct.

After winning in Tullamore , I suppose it was no surprise that Antrim won at home today. The foundations were laid in the first half , indeed early in the first half, when , playing against a strong wind and rain , Antrim registered two goals. In fairness to Kerry they did settle down but crucially missed two goals of their own. The first when Shane Conway inexplicably put a penalty wide. The second arose when the ball broke behind the cover to Podge but unfortunately he had lost his stick and unsuccessfully tried to boot the heavy sliothar to the net. Had we got those goals , who knows.
Kerry did pick it up in the second half when Shane Conway, much more like the real Shane now, finished one to the net. They began to dominate Antrim for while but eventually had to give way to the better team. Shane Nolan was probably our most consistent performer . Daniel,Collins got our goal . All in the Carlow basket at home next weekend.
Fionan Mackessy got a straight red towards the red. Not sure why.

Kerry look to be just a little shy of the standard being set by Antrim in the league and Joe McDonagh cup
Antrim really set out to run at Kerry against the breeze and got in for the goals a bit too handy in the 1st half when they ran at us, in terms of physical conditioning they seem to be that bit ahead of us and fill the jerseys better
Shane Conway, Mikey Boyle and Paudie Connor were our best players
cant fault kerry for effort, Antrim just that bit sharper hurling wise and physically stronger. hopefully no injuries for next week, already down Mackessy. This is effectively an all ireland semi final v carlow, win and kerry will be playing on all ireland senior hurling final day

THU, 19 NOV, 2020 - 07:14 EOGHAN CORMICAN It isn’t so much moving weekend in the Joe McDonagh Cup as it is the deciding weekend of action.
The Kerry hurlers welcome Carlow to Austin Stack Park this Saturday afternoon (1.30pm), with the prize on offer for the winners of this round-robin clash a place in the Joe McDonagh final on Sunday, December 13.
The race for final involvement has been whittled down to three horses, with Antrim currently in pole position having amassed five points from three games. Kerry have four points (two wins) from three games, Carlow lying a point behind the Kingdom having played a game less.
Antrim do not play their final round-robin fixture until next weekend, but both final places will be locked down come close of business on Saturday should Carlow defeat Kerry and leapfrog the Kingdom into second place on the table.
A win for Kerry in this their final round-robin game would take them to six points, out of reach of Carlow and into the final. Defeat for Carlow on Saturday would not mean the end of the road for Colm Bonnar’s side, but they would need to score a sizable win over Westmeath in their last game and hope Antrim slip up against Meath.
That would leave both teams on five points and having drawn their October 31 meeting, score difference would decide who joins Kerry in the final. Antrim are currently +26, Carlow +1.
Kerry tasted their first defeat of the championship last weekend when losing on the road to Antrim by seven points. The Kingdom lost defender Fionan MacKessy to a straight red card late in the game, a decision they are believed to be appealing. Were Kerry to win the Joe McDonagh Cup outright, they would play in the Leinster SHC next year.
Kerry manager Fintan O’Connor said in advance of the Antrim game: "If we are good enough to get to the final, we have to win one of [our last] two games. If we are not good enough, we won't win one of the two games and it'll end up being Carlow and Antrim in the final. It is in our hands.”

Congrats to Kerry.
Some performance by both teams. Kerry had it won, nearly lost it but won it again in the end. Absolutely brilliant.

Great result for Kerry
And what a way to promote hurling in Kerry, a kerry hurling team live on TV on all ireland hurling final day and 3 weeks to build up to it
Today Mikey Boyle was majestic in the 1st half, 4 points from play, Michael O'Leary got crucial scores in the closing stages, Shane Nolan effective at midfield, Daniel Collins 2-2 from play, Tomas Connor superb at full back having switched to there from wing back to cover Brian Murphy who is out injured, Mike Leane an excellent replacement at 5 for Connor. Shane Conway was good as always
Losing Martin Stackpoole in goals to injury in the 1st half was another disruption but John B Halleran fitted in seamlessly
Antrim look to be a stronger outfit than Kerry based on previous encounters but in a final you would never know!!!

This was a contest to match any we have seen in hurling this year and the quality would equal most of what we have seen from more celebrated exponents. And of course you need two to tango to provide such en epic. Indeed if Carlow won it they would have been as worthy victors as Kerry . It was that close . But Kerry take the laurels. I have rarely been as proud of any victory in either code .
After the Limerick /Waterford match last week I commented that the Waterford players seemed to play beyond their capacity and when that happens it is usually due to good management. Similarly today, numerous Kerry players seemed to reach heights beyond which one didn’t feel they were capable of. That can only reflect well on the management..
At various stages different Kerry players were Herculean with the result that it would be invidious to single out any individual. To my eyes there was no apparent weakness in that team and indeed if there was we would not be glowing tonight. There was a time when some Kerry hurlers were accused , perhaps with some justification, of not displaying pride when playing in the green and gold. Thankfully that day is long gone . Pride and passion rained from the skies today.
What a reward to be playing on the biggest day in hurling in Croke Park. I hope they enjoy it at the very least and who knows they may end up with a more tangible reward.
There were a few scuffles after the final whistle when one Carlow player seemed to get a little out of hand, to put it mildly. I hope this does not have any repercussions for any Kerry hurler. We will need a full hand the next day.
Thanks to the County Board for making this blockbuster available for a fiver . Greatly appreciated.

When Sean Kelly brought in the Christy Ring and other cups for weaker counties his stated aim was to play such finals on big hurling days like semi finals and finals. Nicky Brennan came after and it never happened.
Now, because of a global pandemic it will happen this year and Kerry will play on All Ireland final day.
It goes to show what can happen when weaker counties are pitted together with a tangible reward to aim for.
Both sides fought for every ball like men possessed today and Kerry found a second wind (sub Michael oLeary mainly) in injury time to score 4 points from play to win by two.
Everyone manned up and such a collective spirit and meitheal warmed the cockels of my heart.

Well done to Kerry today. Thought you were the better team and deserved the win.
We played you a few years ago in Carlow and Kerry led by 2 points with a few minutes to go but we won by 3. I was very impressed that day with the short passing game you played and it could have gone either way.
We ended up winning the MacDonagh cup that year so maybe it’s an omen for Kerry this year.
Shane Nolan was outstanding today as was Mikey Boyle who has been some servant for Kerry. Shane Conway is some hurler and I hope you can use today’s win to get up to the top hurling table.
Best of luck in the final from Carlow.

Everyone manned up and such a collective spirit and meitheal warmed the cockels of my heart. The good that Sean Kelly has done for hurling is huge within the county and nationally There was no hurling club or hurling activity at all in East Kerry or Killarey at adult or juvenile level come the early 1980s . The old Killarney hurling club which won a senior championship in 1969 had just died away by the mid 1970s. He and a small group founded St Pats East Kerry hurling club in 1983 and fielded an adult team in 1983 out of what was left of the old Killarney club and rounded up a few other enthusiasts. He took up the game himself as an adult. Hurling got off the ground again in that part of the county , Dr Crokes later got back hurling going again in the late 1980s and you have 2 adults clubs in the area now with juvenile hurling in Rathmore, Firies too It is no conincidence that the kerry hurlers did well is his time as county board chairman. The competitions he introduced nationally have been to the betterment of hurling nationally

The number of Kerry senior hurlers that have played Kerry minor football is interesting
Tomas Connor, Padraig Boyle, Mikey Boyle, Brandon Barrett. Fionan Mackessy and Daniel Collins were in around Kerry minor football panels too

Perhaps, in the future Barry O’Mahoney and Donal O’Sullivan will join the ranks, particularly if they become superfluous to the football side of affairs.

With about five or six minutes remaining yesterday and matters at a crescendo, Shane Nolan, magnificent all through, rugby tackled a Carlow player in a threatening position. Shane got his yellow card and Carlow got their equalising point or perhaps it narrowed the gap to one, cannot clearly recall.
If Shane had got a black card he would have been off for ten minutes which would have exhausted the remaining minutes and the added minutes. How would the match have concluded? It maybe that Kerry would have held out . More likely in a game where to quote our old friend Paidi , a grain of sand could tilt the game, fifteen man Carlow would have gone on to win the game. We will never know. But that is not the point. A black card issued in those circumstances could have been crucial. My old sparring partner , Mickmack, might say give Carlow the penalty. Of course there is no guarantee the penalty would be converted. It would be interesting to know how the Carlow manager would respond ,in the circumstances I have outlined , if offered the choice between a penalty and a black card. Considering that the net advantage from the converted penalty would be just two points as opposed to playing against fourteen men for ten minutes , I would be surprised if he opted for the penalty. Perhaps he would.
Down the years , the GAA have been slow to adopt rules from other codes on the basis to do so would taint their game. I sometimes get the impression that the hurling brethren are slow to adopt rules from football in case the purity of their game would be diluted. It is not that long ago since Derek McGrarh was castigates for employing a sweeper or two . Now , God between us and all harm, even the cats are prepared “to stoop” to that level. Similarly the Tyrone like smothering of an opponent is now commonplace in hurling. Those pesky cats brought it to another level. Just like we can all learn from each other every code can learn from other codes.
I will be surprised if the black card is not eventually introduced in hurling. Of course it is not flawless. What rule is.

Kilkenny don't call it a sweeper.
Kilkenny say the centre back is holding their position.

The Carlow manager would have taken the penalty i am sure although to be fair to you Veteran it was Shane Nolan that landed the equaliser shortly afterwards. But if Carlow had goaled from a penalty Carlow would surely have won. Maybe you have hit upon the perfect solution Veteran...give the opposing captain the choice... black card or penalty. The circumstances of the game would decide his call.

Well done to the Kerry hurlers, great game to watch. The future looks bright for Kerry hurling . Some lovely hurlers in the south , the likes of Donal O'Sullivan, Daniel Casey , Liam Twomey , Dan McCarthy, Michael Linehan would be be great prospects but football will beckon for some. Kerry hurlers did us proud on Saturday and deserve their day in Croke Park .
