Jimmy Barry Murphy knew what to do with Donal Og is correct JBM selected him as goalkeeper when he won minor and senior all irelands He selected Donal Og again as goalkeeper when he returned as manager He didnt reselect Donal Og but is was after he missed a lot of time through injury so it is fair to say JBM had good time for him, it was after a long absence through injury when Donal Og was in his 30s that his inter county career ended I am not a big fan of Donal Og but he has a point looks at some situations, it is now a case of play the kerry senior hurling championship as quickly as possible during the all ireland senior football championship so the two football championship club and county senior have a clear run of it when Kerry exit the inter county. What county does that to facilitate 2 championships in the stronger code ? none The kerry minor hurlers havent had a dual county minor in years, this weekend no different, always take to the field without some star hurlers as a result including this weekend. Would you say Donal Og is completely wide of the mark? To be fair it was happening in Kilkenny when they'd play the football championship around this time of the year. What Donal Og says is true but the problem is his only interest is self interest imo. A few years ago he was all about Ulster hurling and the ridiculous Team Ulster idea. Imo he was trying to put himself in the mix for a managers job there. When it didn't happen he turned on Antrim as well. Not forgotten his pitch for the "Director of Hurling" in Cork on the Sunday Game. He was a great player in his day no doubt. However he's never done anything outside of playing to justify this view he has of himself to be a manager etc that is a low bar you have set comparing against how Kilkenny treat their football championship!

Senior Club hurling in Antrim especially would be miles ahead of Kerry. Dunloy, Loughgiel, Cushendall etc can mix it and beat some of the very best senior club teams in Ireland. Derry have Slaughtneil, Down have Portaferry, Carlow had Mount Leinster Rangers and Offaly had Birr and Kilcormac Kiloughey. Kerry does not have a big strong senior club/clubs able to take on the big senior clubs in Ireland. Kilmoyley done well but that was at intermediate level, which is a good step below senior club hurling. Big hurling areas in Antrim aswel, Kerry clubs are picking from from very small parishes in North Kerry. All these things go against you when you are trying to get out of the Joe McDonagh cup or even Division 2 for that Matter. Naas competed decently against Ballyhale this year and the Naas players took huge confidence from that and you see they are backboning the Kildare team that beat Kerry last weekend. I've long said the issue with Kerry clubs is they're playing each other too often. It's the case with both North and South Kerry teams. I actually heard something recently thst in the 90s there was a league played during the summer involving Kerry, West Limerick and North Cork clubs. Seemed to go on for a few years. There was also the very brief West Munster League. Clubs in Carlow and Kildare have played in Kilkenny at underage and the benefits are there to be seen. in the mid 1990s there was a league that you mentioned north cork, west limerick, north kerry - it ran for about 3 years but fixture making became impossible In the early 2000s there was all munster league involving some really big munster hurling clubs - Kilmoyley got to the final 2 years in a row losing one to Sarsfields Cork and winning the other in 2003 against Na Piarsiagh Cork who were a star studded team at the time - John Gardiner, the O'Halpins. The cup for it was the Jack Lynch cup which was a pretty famous name for the cup It was a great competition for a few years but fizzled out, ultimately fixture making became impossible to agree

Still an example. At different times in recent years both Tipperary and Waterford had no reps in the Munster club championship in football as they didn't have their own championships finished in time.

Minors and U20 both in Leinster championship action this weekend.
Minors play Offaly. A few years this was a fixture where you couldn't rule out a Kerry win. However now it's hard to see. Hopefully they'll put in a good display.
U20s play Carlow. Should be able to get a win here you would think. But at the very least put in a good display.

Leinster U20HC tier 2 round 1 Carlow 0-10 Kerry 2-10, Laois Hire O'Moore Park FT
Leinster MHC tier 1 round 2 Offaly 1-15 Kerry 0-6, Glenisk O'Connor Park FT
A good win for the U20s. Tier 2 is the place to be. A more difficult day for the minors but not as bad as last week. Dublin are up next for the minors next Friday. If common sense prevails that will be their last game in Tier 1 before moving on to Tier 2.

But also only managed another five with it. While Kerry are out of their depth in Teir 1 Kildare are hammering everyone in Teir 2. Had another big win today scored nine goals.

In Tier 2 Kildare beat Wicklow 9-23 to 0-5. Kildare are coming into a purple patch. RTÉ had an article on a hurling census last year. Kildare and Meath have high hurling populations. Similar to Clare, Limerick, Waterford and Wexford. Kildare could nudge ahead of Westmeath and Laois in the Leinster pecking order. Offaly might still get the better of them today though.

good win for the under 20 hurlers yesterday against Carlow, 2-10 to 0-10
not entirely unexpected as this squad has prepared very well
crunch match against Kildare next week
Lining out without dual players Rob Monohan, Luke Crowley and Adam Segal is a hindrance but such is the case

In Tier 2 Kildare beat Wicklow 9-23 to 0-5. There's a huge gap at every grade if you look at it. In the U20 B championship at the weekend for example. Roscommon beat Tyrone 12-20 to 3-07 and Down beat Wicklow 3-26 to 1-12.

www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41107081.htmlInterested article about Kildare hurling. Very interesting to see a push to get hurling countywide. Something I've long felt isn't being done enough in Kerry. Also interesting to see Kildare CB having a five year plan etc Something I also think is missing in Kerry.

Kildare football isn’t too far ahead of Kildare hurling so that’s maybe why the County board are willing to get behind the push for hurling in the county. The same cannot be said in Kerry and unless the County Board really want hurling to succeed they need to do everything to bring it on it, a 5 year plan like Kildare done would be a good start. But the game would need to really grow outside North Kerry and I am not too sure the hunger is there for that to happen.

For kerry hurling in terms of spreading the game, it is often one step forward and then a step back soon after steps forward in recent times - Tralee Parnells putting hurling on a much better footing in Tralee town, winning the kerry feile, north kerry under 21 etc - Dr Crokes playing at senior level in adult - Rathmore setting up an adult team after a good few years of juvenile activity - Firies with good numbers at underage - Tralee CBS flourishing in colleges hurling steps back - Neither Dr Crokes , St Pats or Rathmore able to field at under 15 Feile in 2023 and the suggested East Kerry divisional team for all 3 hasnt arisen. - re above it is clear hurling is becoming too fragmented in east kerry - Duagh and St Pats barely hanging in there at adult level - no underage hurling in Duagh or Dingle, both had underage hurling 10 years ago - football is completely dominating hurling at adult level in Kenmare, the club has capacity to be so much stronger in adult hurling It is clear lads like to play hurling if the opportunity is there e.g. Barry O'Sullivan and Matthew Flaherty hurling in the senior hurling championship with Kilmoyley though from Dingle, Paul Geaney played with Kilmoyley until he was 20 and won an Ireland under B hurling medal with Kerry. However is there a real appetite countywide for expansion and do structures facilitate it, the short answer is no -

I'm sure they stopped around the time they started at senior level. St. Pats have a least started fielding underage teams in recent years. Would definitely think at U14 etc in championship East and South Kerry teams should be entered. Going forward would Firies ask as the hurling club in Mid Kerry? In the 90s I think there was a club. School level is another area that needs to be looked at. Does The Sim have any hurling? I'm sure at some point they did. Listowel is another area, outside of Daugh, where nothing happens. Does the school in Kenmare have any hurling?

However is there a real appetite countywide for expansion and do structures facilitate it, the short answer is no - Good points Mossie, The main problem with trying to grow the game outside of the hurling stronghold of North Kerry is that you are trying to create a new hurling club in very strong traditional football areas where there has never been much of an interest in the small ball and sometimes it takes outsiders from stronger hurling counties to get things going like Lenihans with the Crokes. Lads might show an interest in these areas from under 7 up to under 15 but once the football gets serious after that, the hurling usually fades away. It’s not an easy fix but I definitely think Kilgarvan and Kenmare are underachieving. Kenmare is a big town, but lads give up hurling during their teenage years to play soccer and Gaelic. I don’t see why Kenmare cant be a strong dual club? Compare the above to a small club like Kilmoyley where the numbers in primary school and underage are small, but their retention rate from underage to senior is huge because the whole parish is hurling mad and the hurling club is community driven and it is their be all and end all.

Another heavy loss for thr minors in their last game in Leinster. Questions really should be asked as to who agreed to have Kerry in teir one. Would it have been any different had they played in Munster?

Daniel Collins, Jason Diggins & Podge Boyle dropped from the panel tomorrow for having a few pints last weekend.
A pity because they are 3 of the better hurlers on the panel.
I remember the same happened to Tomas O Se and The Gooch back in the day too.
It is always a tough decision for management to make especially when it weakens your team but they can’t be seen to be weak among the other squad members.

I'm sorry but saw that this morning and I think that's absolutely ridiculous. I thought this treating grown men like infants crap had finally gone out the door.
What bloody harm would a few pints do anyway, let alone young finely tuned athletes a week before a game.
They're not Limerick preparing for an AI final.
I understand dressing rooms have a complex psychology and a management has to cultivate an aura of the buck stops here, but this stuff is just infantilization

Tge issue with South Kerry was the thinking of more clubs meant it was better. When they were in the championship in the 2000s it was made up of Kenmare, Kilgarvan, St. Pats, Crokes, Laune Rangers and Stacks. While on paper it looked good it waa never going to work with travelling for training etc Kenmare/Kilgarvan entered about 10 years ago bur only for a year. As I've said they should be entering as South kerry and the others East Kerry or whatever name they want.

Goes to show there's a difference between league and championship. Goes to show is right. Carlow like ourselves tend to come good in championship. It's good we are not playing Laois or Kildare next. They'll be intent on getting a response. Kerry were in that position last year. After Down, there was a big performance up in Carlow. Carlow will feel they should have made the final last year. They did us a favour by beating Offaly but we did ourselves a favour by beating Antrim who had already qualified! It'll be a tough game next week. It will go along way in defining both counties championship this year.
