Would anyone recommend Marc o Se as part of the ticket or Dara O Cinneide, seemed to have done well with Gealtact. They have zero experience managing/selecting/coaching/training etc at inter county level though. A world of difference from coaching a club or playing at any level.

Whoever the next manager is, our style of defending must be looked at.? In our 12 games this year from league to championship, we conceded 16 goals and 157 points.. with regards to goals, we kept clean sheets against Kildare in the league and Clare in the championship. Not good enough. Kerryboy - this is a very interesting stat. I wonder when we last had a concession rate like this? It really shows where we have fallen down. If this can be resolved then we have a decent foundation for a good team as we have the forward skills. I think the county board need to take a long hard look at the potential managers. If I was in their boots I would be looking for someone with a structured approach and plan, akin to what the rugby guys do: 1. A coach for goalkeepers (eg. Murphy) 2. A coach for backs (Griffin, Moynihan, Stephen Stack, Donie Buckley?) 3. A coach for midfielders (Dara, Quirke) 4. A coach for forwards (Maurice, Dara O C) 5. Strength and conditioning expert 6. A manager who can gel these together, focus the team on the players strengths, rather than over-analysis on how to contain the opposition. The names above are only examples - I'm sure there are other non-ex county players who could fulfill these roles as well. If it is not possible to have 4 permanent members of the management team as selectors, then structure it so that such experts can be called on regularly or as needed, and this approach would also help to freshen up the sessions. The last management team was completely lop-sided with several forwards on board. Defending should be the easiest to resolve - I really don't believe that 8 or 10 lads in Kerry cannot learn how to tackle and defend properly.

Just looking at goal keeping alone it takes years to reach the skill set of Cluxton, Beggan and Morgan for example. It would probably take someone like Shane Ryan 4-5 years to become really good in the position. That Armagh lad from Queens has a good piece on the RTE site today about how much longer it will take Galway to learn their defensive system and to perfect it. Dublin didn't just happen over night.

I don't know about Murphy tbh. He was involved in 13/14/15 when our kickouts etc weren't exactly fantastic

I think the next while should involve some reflection together with an indepth analysis of the skills needed for the position.
I am sure many will think they have the skill set etc but as we have seen with EF it is a broad base and very demanding.
As equally important is the need for good people to be on board and to compliment each other and the team structure. So no rush for now. Let the dust settle .

Control, could we set up a poll asking who people would like to see as the next Kerry Senior Football Manager? I guess the options would be the most mentioned names, Liam Kearns, Peter Keane, Jack O'Connor, Pat O'Shea and an option of none of the above. It'd be nice to see who people want to see if they all are available.

Now that Eamon has resigned as Manager I assume that this means that his selectors and the entire entourage of selectors, physios etc. are also finished.

John Evans wasn't long getting himself on the airwaves having ever so subtle digs at the outgoing management team and talking himself up. He shouldn't be in the conversation at all in my opinion. I'd bring back Mickey Ned before having him in.

I like the names mentioned, especially Diarmuid Murphy, Tommy Griffin, Declan O Sullivan, Donie Buckley, Peter Keane, Seamus Moynihan & Maurice Fitz. Plenty of very well qualified foot ball men in that line up to replace a fine man who has given his best.
Still hard to believe that he has stepped down. His job was incredibly difficult, trying to bed in new players, keep the more senior players motivated, watching results, accepting the bumps along the road that you are always going to have with a young team.
I just hope that whoever does take over will have a good thick skin!

Just on a technical point with the phraseology, if profound for those who think about it - It is a Leader as distinct from a Manager that is required,?, someone who can inspire and mould talented individuals into a team. We had an obvious one in business and I wonder if there is anything we can learn here to arrive at the right conclusion?
The Job Description is pretty detailed and in addition to ticking the boxes, it is then about scoring and comparing the combinations across the candidate options - is it The Kerry Ingredient we are in search of?, you either have or haven't got it, etc.
The selection process is as key as role itself, ie if it isn't done properly then a lot of talent will go to waste over the next say 5 years, and a lot of comment will ensue, not least right here. Where I am heading is, has any County Board ever sought professional advice for what is the most important role of all? It is a lot to do with Creativity, ah maybe Ballythefireside can help? Now let us all sit around the fire for a right auld chat of an evening?

I think it’s clear enough that there’s 3-4 realistically in the running for the Job
Pat O Shea, Diarmuid Murphy, Peter Keane, Jack O Connor
The make up of the backroom team to me as even more important. How many lads who have played for Kerry are currently coaching at club level? I know 3 of the above names that I have named never played senior and it isn’t a prerequisite. But there’s a surprisingly small amount of ex county lads at the coal face, I’m struggling to name 5
PS a lot of lads are think that you need an ex keeper to divise a kickout strategy. That’s nonsense. Kickouts are a “team” tactic. It takes two (and 3+) to tango if they are to work. Most of the retired keepers today belong to the “drive it out as far as you can” club.

Is the S&C programme run by the County Board independent of the manager, selectors and coaches?
If not, it should be.
Does the manager have sole discretion on his selectors and coaches?

I am not sure I agree. If management want bigger players for their plan, or more agile players, or more aerobically strong players, it should be their prerogative to build towards that. I understand you worry about two years of bad practise harming Kerry for two more...perhaps the county board could appoint an expert consultant?

The kcb should be taking a longer term view of s&c, nutrition etc and get the best support possible. This cannot be determined at the whim of the manager. The manager can give his thoughts and guidance but it is not his decision to make.

After his performance on Terrace Talk this evening I reckon if Kerry didn't get Donie Buckley as coach he'd hardly take it! Shame on giveandgo for bringing Martin's name into such a discussion!
