Cry me a river! This is a new Kerry management and they are picking a brand NEW Kerry panel, it's their panel and it’s their prerogative who they include at this juncture or not. Any former Kerry player from the previous panel under the previous managmenent cribbing about not getting a text is just crybaby with a false sense of entitlement. I’m delighted the new Kerry management are ruthlessly setting about their business from the outset. Under the former regime it was often mentioned in a conversation that it was harder to get off the Kerry panel than on to it, and there was a lot of truth in that view and i think that day is now gone! Reset to zero for all and if want a place on this panel or stay on it you are going to have to perform. All players are now on trial as far as i see it. I see where you’re coming from, and in fairness we don’t actually know the ins and outs. I think you might be taking me up wrong, I’m not saying anybody is entitled to anything, a courtesy call to long term panel members to let them know they’re not going to be invited in is not exactly a big ask or inconvenience though. I know it’s a new management team but it’s not like they aren’t aware of who has been playing in recent years. Anyway, no point dwelling on it. I’d agree a shake up was needed and am excited to see how the team shapes up. Define long term?

'Includeds' have of course to be notified and the downside of sending 'Excludeds' a message is where do you draw the line as to who gets it and who doesn't? If one doesn't get a text then the assumption is that you are not permanently excluded as some Includeds will lose form or unfortunately get injured and Excludeds who catch they eye will be called in. While not getting the call up at any stage is never going to be nice, IMO it could be worse to be told it and it could lead to young fellas turning their back altogether.
On a lighter note (well maybe or maybe not) I heard of a situation where a lad with another county didn't get his text and someone consoled him by saying 'there are worse things in life than not getting on the county team' and to which the laddo said 'there effin well isn't'. As PÓ6 (aka Paidí) would say to those of us who think they could make everyone happy, 'get outa that one'. Peter Keane has a track record of knowing how to deal with youngsters so I'd place my trust in him and there will be bigger calls on us as supporters in the years ahead if we are to win back what is ours, and sooner rather than later. There is some pipeline there (you listenin' Joe Brolly?) - if our minor exploits is anything to go by then it was never even nearly as strong and it will be interesting to see who will emerge from the pack as the next generation of greats as it is inevitable they are there and maybe those of us at operational level might shed light on a few future kings.
I didn't get a text myself so I'll keep the head down and you'd never know, while there's life there's hope and there's a few on here I wouldn't mind having a right cut at of a dark evening in Currans. Tomaisín Annascaul, you have been warned!

Could somebody explain to me why Ronan Shanahan is repeatedly excluded from Kerry teams/panels? No I cant explain this one of all the exclusions this is a mystery, unless we have better corner backs that we haven’t seen yet in a Kerry Jersey Ronan Shannahan teak tough hard working physically able for the modern game. Performed well in big game shut out top Dublin attackers on and on I’m not getting this one but will watch for better options here as the season progresses . Delighted to see Shane Ryan in.contention

Well done Peter Keane. There is no room for sentiment in sport.

Griffin and BJK have been panel members for years, Fionn is a former All Ireland winning captain etc. I’m not saying they should get a testimonial dinner or anything, but somebody from the setup or county board could have given them a quick call to say PK has selected his initial panel and they are not included rather than letting them find out on the grapevine. If it was me, my brother or clubmate I’d have liked that courtesy.

Some regard not contacting long serving panel members to deliver bad news as a sign of ruthlessness.
Others would call that cowardice.

A lot of hard words on this page re players bit harsh lads! While i agree some players probably werent/arent good enough everyone of them have played with the same intention to do the very best they can for our beloved jersey. If i could i would thank everyone of them personally.

The right of the manager to pick his own panel is absolute and he can show his mettle by omitting some and picking others that we might not (yet) believe in - a strong manager trusts his own instincts having listened to others but then makes the calls. This is not to be mixed up with showing some humanity in how he executes his choices. There is no sense of entitlement in my belief that a long serving (a player who has played competitive fixtures for several seasons) should be told directly that his services are not required for the forthcoming season. Long serving players tend to organise their year around football and informing them is only a courtsey and acknowledgement of their past service. Ruthlessness is evident in making the calls, respect is earned in how you execute your ruthlessness.

Ah lads, some of ye are on about ruthlessness and it's what we need etc but common decency and respect is also a show of strength. Quite simply I hope that these lads got a phone call - if not it's disappointing.

the most powerful bit in Colm's book is the realisation, after the extent of his injury became clear, that he could be "an ex kerry footballer". Being a kerry footballer defined him and the thought of not being one anymore shocked him. Its a big deal to be no longer involved.
There is a myth about Cody and the text messages. Read Jackie Tyrrells book. Long servants were left in no mans land not knowing where they stood ... "being left to crash onto the rocks"... to quote Jackie. Eventually after a year on the panel with no game time ...they usually retired.
Jackie asked to meet Cody in a hotel to tell him that he was retiring. The meeting lasted 10 mins. They didnt even order tea.

I agree wholeheartedly with you; the role of the county chairman must be questioned too as he is the liaison officer for the Kerry senior team - if PK ( who cited man management as a major part of his role at his press conference) did not feel that he should inform the likes of Fionn, BJ etc then the job should have been carried out by Tim Murphy or his appointee - its not good enough that guys were finding out from sources other than the management/county board.

The manager is allowed to, and should, be ruthless but a bit of common courtesy usually works out to everyone’s benefit.
He should drop anyone who he thinks isn’t up to it or is playing below par at the moment. However he’d be best served in the medium term by communicating with these players- this isn’t minor level whereby the lads will be gone next season, he might need/want them again!
I’m surprised Shanahan is gone again- I really don’t get that situation

Some it seems are just far too precious.
To be invited to wear the Kerry jersey is a huge privilege and honour and comes clearly with responsibilities on and off the field. You are not forced in any way shape or form and the word sacrifice is way over played – it’s first and foremost a huge personal honour for oneself, family and club. To choose the lifestyle of being an Intercounty footballer is completely voluntary and one does so because the rewards can be very gratifying in a sporting, professional and personal sense. Human competition is driven by reward in every sense and if there weren’t rewards in Intercounty sport (measure it how you want) people would not be at the endeavour. So give me a break with the word sacrifice, there are plenty examples of real sacrifice in the world and through history if you understand the actual meaning of the word.
The county board officers and entire panel along with Éamonn Fitzmaurice and management team had quite deservedly a very good blow out over a couple of days to mark the end of Eamonn’s tenure as manager and indeed the end of that panels time together. Seemed like a decent and courteous ending for all to me.
Maybe some are struggling to see the obvious picture here but when Éamonn stepped down this in fact meant the end of not just that entire management team but the entire panel, it was over for all and Kerry were hitting the reset button. New manager, new prerogative, new panel, feelings hurt, too bad! Intercounty football is serious business and elite sport at the highest level, it’s ruthless and competitive and everyone is there to compete and win. There will be plenty of opportunity for fellas to force their way back if they really want this.

Fionn, BJK etc no offence to them but they have had their chance to nail down starting spots and it hasn't worked out for them - unable to get their starting spots in a Kerry team in transition mode
What would be the point in retaining them for another season potentially taking up a spot that a young fella could come on and start earning his spurs as they say. Fair play to peter Keane for having the conviction to regreen the panel despite retirements. We must remember this is a rebuilding job in itself and I for one am not too bother about National league results this spring for example - get guys match experience at this level is what it's about now.

Some guys mentioned above were in before and didn't make the cut - good club players but that is it. There are 45 guys in total as far as I know including the Crokes guys who obviously are not training with the panel at the moment. Primarily gym based work at the moment over in Currans[/b] Hopefully at least 5 minutes per day will be spent by all players practising kicking with their weaker foot. What is needed to defeat Dublin is a team effort. Not all the best club players make good team members. They want to dominate like they do at club level. In another section it was mentioned some time ago that some of the Dublin players do not show well playing for their clubs. It is not that they dont try, it is just that they do get the same support/umderstanding from their club players. Re the list given by TAIBHSE I make that there are at least 13 from the main panel that are not presently included in the 2019 list.

So panel for NFL would appear to be Brian Kelly, Shane Ryan, Killian Young, Shane Enright, Tom O'Sullivan, Tom Leo, Brian O Beaghlaoich, Paul Murphy, Tadhg Morley, Peter Crowley, Gavin Crowley, Gavin O'Brien, David Moran, Jack Barry, Jonathan Lyne, Seanie O Shea, Stephen O'Brien, Conor Geaney, Paul Geaney, James O'Donoghue, Conor Geaney, Mikey Geaney,Rob Wharton,Jack Sherwood. Have I omitted a few? Mark Ryan, Paudie Clifford, Danny Sheehan, Cian Gammell, Conor Keane, Graham O’Sullivan. Griffin is still training with kerry, and hasn't been left go as some people have stated including a well known journalist

The whole set up from manager to kitman is brand new. They havent(or shouldnt) kicked a ball yet.It is perfectly within a new managers remit to sit down and put together a panel which he thinks is the one that will give him the starting point for a 3 year term.Im always reminded of the Maurice Fitz line when I hear lads not being picked for a county panel.Maurice said he never retired ,they just stopped picking me.As far as I see it as soon as Kerry exited the 2018 championship and Eamonn Fitz left no player had a place on the panel. It was upto the new manager to pick a new panel.

Don't think he would be able for it physically; the amount of training without the rest aspect. He gave a great interview to Colm Parkinson a few months back about his injury. There was other stuff in the media at the time about how sitting in a car going to training for a few hours at least 3 times a week and then sitting at a desk all day wouldn't be great for his hamstring. Especially based in Cork you are talking about 3 hours in total in the car every night for training.

Is this really that big of an issue? Players are dropped from teams all the time They are usually told they are being dropped though. It seems this was an unfortunate oversight and won’t happen again. I’m sure the players involved will all receive a brief apology and it’ll blow over.

I dont think this will end well if it is true If the offensive mark becomes permanent he would be an option in around the square.. Will the offensive mark will bring to a head the whole issue of how big men are defended against near goal? - current situation is you can grapple, hold, drag and jump on a big full forward with a 99% chance of not coughing up a free or penalty (even though these are clear fouls). Out the field a minor jersey tug or a hand on a players back are enough to give up a free (correctly within the rules).
