I like the idea of Sean O'Shea at midfield. Brings more focussed energy to that position I think ( Jack should have made it his own by now and still can but needs to think about using the ball intelligently when he gets it and not off-loading to the nearest teammate and if no one is available, running forward in a type of panic...organised chaos I like on a football pitch...not disorganised chaos!). That leaves the half forward line with the issue Mick Mack points out of height. I prefer the combative instincts of Miceal Burns to Kevin McCarthy. I think Miceal is more likely to fight for and win breaking ball. Not to say Kevin couldn't do it but I'm not as confident. Paul Murphy would equally pick up breaking ball. Stephen O'Brien maybe not so much but a great man to turn a break away attack into something significant. Relying on breaks and winning your fair share of clean ball around midfield of course means forcing the opposition goalkeeper to go long every time which means pushing up including on their sweeper.Agame which we have recently looked too flat footed for. It could also mean rotating KD out the field at key moments. I'd like to see Stefan Okunbar on the bench...unlikely to happen and perhaps even 'illogical' but could give us something of a surprise from the bench with capability of changing a game. No one can be sure about the latter part of that but we won't know unless we try. As for illogical, logic has largely got us this far!...nice view isn't it? Losing or drawing on Sat evening and we are out. We may well be out anyway. If its not time for some 'left of field' thinking, when would be? When we're out and bitterly attacking management? Fine if that's what gets you going but me, I'd rather we left some mark on this championship before we hang up the geansai for this season.100% agree with your post on this Joxer. Why worry about the opposition all the time, and neglect our own capacity to dictate the game on our terms. Gavin Crowley obviously a very long shot and, if hes not right, then hes not right, but he is the type of character to take the game to the opposition like he did in the League Final when sprung more or less out of the blue against the Dubs a while back. Dont think too many were calling that 'illogical' at the time afterwards if memory serves me correctly. Think Griffin at 6 is definitely an option because, while not technically a gifted footballer, he takes the ball to the opposition at speed and is very difficult to stop with a head of steam up. In todays game of defensive lines, these type of players are invaluable be they gifted footballers or not. I think he would give us a lot more than Peter Crowley is at the minute in that position. I think the mid-field and forwards give us a better balance of footpassers to pick out our inside line, and i would alternate the positions of the forwards at various stages to keep the opposition guessing. If Paul Murphy stays at 5, then the 5 of the 6 forwards that i have mentioned (McCarthy, Geaney, Ó Brien, Clifford and Ó Donoghue) have all experience playing in both the half-forward line and inside, and Donaghy could slip to the wing at various stages on our own kick-out as a strategy. So many options to be looked at, i think this is the way we should be attacking the Kildare match by throwing off the shackles. It would re-energise the team i think, and would make the opposition worry about us rather than the opposite way around. Just my opinion, but like Joxer said, i'd prefer leave our mark on the championship focussing on us rather than the opposition

"The last time McManus was left on his own he was with his mother in the kitchen"
that was what my Monaghan colleague shot me with today .....i hadnt met him since the game.
He is more hopeful that confident facing Galway. He says that if its a draw towards the end and Galway start playing "keep ball" that Monaghan wont be trying too hard to get the ball back.
But he thinks it wont come to that as Galway will defend in numbers and block out McManus.

The more I think about Saturday evening, the more I’m convinced we’re heading for a massive anti-climax. Kerry should win but I really do expect Monaghan to get a win or a draw and give everyone that ‘I told you so' moment!
Listening to the sounds coming out of Galway and Kevin Walsh, their complete focus now and rightly too in my view, is on their All-Ireland semi-final. We can completely ignore whatever team Galway name for Saturday evening and expect to see plenty of changes. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they don’t start or we see at all the likes of Damien Comer, Shane Walsh or Ian Burke, and we’ll see plenty of other changes too.
Understatement of the year now, you have to beat Dublin to win this All Ireland and Galway clearly don’t care if it’s a semi or final and probably might slightly prefer that chance now in the semi-final. Saturday is about giving game time to fringe players and not picking up injuries or suspensions. Expecting them to overturn a fully committed and in the last chance saloon team even in their home venue is the long shot in my view.
In any case, the Kerry senior footballers depending on a handout is a horrible position to be in but that’s where we find ourselves. Regardless of how it turns out, bringing in the younger players by Kerry has been a massive positive for this year but it had TO happen regardless of who was in charge. On a side note, given there is a real possibility now that Kerry will exit the Championship, I hope Kerry supporters remember to give Kieran Donaghy the massive send-off he deserves in what is expected to be his last season.

The Clones result was a Hail Mary conclusion to the game. I presume Daniel Flynn is suspended for this game? I think the current form of the players (last two games) is far more concerning that what ever positional switches/selections they come up at this stage. A team has nothing without form, however form is temporary. Just announced that his one match ban has been upheld on appeal. I was sure he would get off.

Ah jazus we're being a bit negative again!
Anyway should Star not be rested? Foley & Co only start if back to fitness and maybe err on side of keeping powder dry if we get a cut at the Dubs. Like others on here I don't know the inside on the Crowley duo either but you'd be thinking that management do - they are two of the finest and capable of turning a game and 3 ex stars of the game can surely figure that one out.
As I said, from what I saw in Omagh the Dubs are within our grasp if we play to our true potential and stranger things have happened and Jim McGuinness is very positive on Kerry too.

A lot of people are advocating Mark Griffin for CHB. I have little problem with that but where is the evidence to support that suggestion? On a couple of occasions he has been moved out there he seems to have done reasonably well. His instinct certainly is to drive forward, although on occasions these can appear headless runs into a cul de sac. Apart from the examples of being occasionally switched out there , has anybody on here seen him start a game there for South Kerry, his club etc and if so how did he perform over the course of the game? We often saw Brendan O'Sullivan come on at midfield for Kerry and perform well and a lot of us were surprised that he was not getting regular full game chances . Sadly, when he did get these chances he looked totally out of his depth.
Gavin Crowley is a different kettle of fish. He played a full game against Aiden O'Shea in the NFL and distinguished himself greatly. We have not seen him since but the point I am making is that we got some evidence that Gavin could possibly have success at CHB. Of course , Kerry may have played challenge games where Gavin did not distinguish himself in that position.
In any case, merely acting the devil's advocate regarding Mark.

IIRC, Griffin played centre back against Cork in Tralee in the league a few years ago and was also detailed with marking Murphy against Donegal in a league game in Tralee (not the one with all the scraps) perhaps the same year which meant be played out around the middle a lot in that game.
I've seen him play midfield for Foilmore a couple of times and he didnt stand out there IMO.

I have him a midfield purely on the basis of his mobility and ability to drive at opposition defences. I'm playing Moran beside him to provide the subtlety. We need a combative midfielder to in the old phrase 'bust up the play' and drive us forward. I wouldn't be building a plan around him but he could also drop a bit deeper like an auxiliary center back of needed to shoe up the middle for a period during a game.

Did griffin not play centre back against Tyrone in the league game also this year. Griffins reputation at no 6 is based on the shoulder he hit Aidan o shea with in 2014.

I think like everything else he hasn't had a sustained run in any position really apart from full back which he was never suited to. I just think he has qualities to that are suited out the field. I don't see him as a stopper center back either to be honest.

Moran and Maher/Barry to start and finish.

Wing back probably offers Mark his best outlet to nail a starting place although I'd like to see how he would go in a workaholic wing forward role with coaching and time. I think however it is fairly indicative of the whole set up that we don't see/know anything else about/in this player rather than an isolated shooting duck target at three.

based on the games so far, Monaghan and Galway deserve to progress to the semi finals... in my opinion. Seems reasonable enough based on what we have seen to date provided Galway come out and go for the jugular at the weekend and Monaghan over come that obstacle. Kerry's performance v Galway was their group sinker game. If Galway and Kerry win on Saturday Kerry fully deserve their place in the last four on merit.

Not knocking it at all. I just don't see him as a top level intercounty player regardless of what position you put him in.

Good article by Jimmy McG. Highlighting the importance and advantages of a system to secure primary possession - having a keeper who can execute good kicks and outfield players who are on the keepers wavelength to receive ball from such kicks. Its a key facet of the modern game, certainly at the top end of the game, and Kerry are failing miserably in this regard. Winning possession from your own kick outs and disrupting the opposition from securing and/or using primary possession - it was ever thus. However, years of chopping and changing keepers, little to no innovation in kick out strategy, and an expectation of "it will all be alright on the night" reflects very poorly on this management team. I also think that EF obsesses over Dublin and the type of game that Kerry ought to play strategically and tactically to beat them - the problem is, he has forgotten that there are teams like Monaghan and Galway (for example) with sophisticated systems of their own that Kerry need to overcome first before the great reveal against Dublin.

Many posters regularly refer to Mark Griffins pace. I'm not convinced about that. From what I have seen of his outfield performances he has a dash or two in him and after that, he goes from top gear to second gear and stays there. I would be concerned too about when he has to turn and defend at pace. I say that from having seen him play outfield many times. If the selectors are not playing him outfield there must be a reason.

RTE website is talking about the possibility of a playoff between Kerry and Monaghan.
As they stand
................P W D L Pts
Galway
Monaghan .2 1 1 0 3
Kerry........2 0 1 1 1
Kildare
If Galway beat Monaghan and Kerry beat Kildare and, in their respective games, Monaghan score 1 goal more than Kerry, and Kerry can improve their score difference by 5 points to match Monaghan’s, then the table would read
..................P...W...D....L...Pts....Head to head....Score diff......Goals for
Galway
Monaghan....3...1....1.....1...3 ......draw-no diff.......same..........same
Kerry..........3...1....1.....1...3...... draw-no diff ......same..........same
Kildare
There are a lot of moving parts that would have to align for this to happen but if it does the semi final with Dublin would have to be postponed.

And if they don't have that they're contributing f**k all else. So why not put some one in there that can break the 'gain line' as it were and move us an extra 20 yards up the pitch. If our midfield were doing their job I wouldn't be advocating Mark Griffin for that position. But, we we're not winning break either and when we do we are too slow to move the ball on.

The only reason rte are looked into the possibility of Kerry and Monaghan ending up in this situation is because their beloved Dublin may be caught up in it. If Donegal or Tyrone at the other end would be affected by this type of occurance it wouldn't even enter their minds to foresee the possibility of it

We are not looking for Mark to be another Jack O Shea we are just looking for a player that can give us more productivity than the current no 8 . On a scale of 1 to 10 we are getting. 3 at best in the middle of the park it’s alarming !! That we are allowing this.? Darren Hughes done what ever the F he wanted last week because there was absolutely no attacking threat from midfield we raised the white flag here and have been doing so for quiet a while now. Do you think Mark could do what MIchael Dara Mcualey does for Dublin? MD is not the greatest baller either but he’s a thorn in our side going forward Why can’t we have a player like that ? With a more attack minded midfield it would move our half forward line about 30 m higher up and allow our center forward play where he can do damage not back defending all the time miles away from where he’s supposed to be . Do you think mark griffin is as good as MD McCauley ? How about putting Foley in for Tom O sullivan at CB and Putting Tom Midfield wher he is well able to attack and defend Right now we just want anything to improve our productivity in this stagnant sector .

Dublin will evolve again now that more kickouts are going long.
This was the midfielders and half forward line v Tyrone
McCarthy 6 foot and 1 inches Fenton 6 foot and 4 inches Scully 6 foot Con 5 foot and 11 inches Howard 6 foot and 1 inches.
Its a lot of height to be aiming at and food for thought in selecting a half back line.
Ciaran Kilkenny and MDMA are others around 6 foot to be contending with.
