I thought that was a brilliant, honest interview by Donaghy. It strongly hints he will be announcing his retirement in the next few weeks but he is so honest when talking, it makes it inevitable that he will actually retire given the omerta inter-county players operate under. He wont be popular with some people on here after it. He has a go at Kerry people who dont bother or make excuses not to go to games but can still find the time to slate players and the team on forums and the radio. He laughs at the "Kick it in Brigade". He refused to criticise Eamon Fitz for not playing him against Galway. Talks of a few anonymous letters he got himself. Speaks of how Clifford is a natural leader. Tells a few yarns about the change in the inter-county player over the last decade and a half. Not being allowed cheese and coleslaw rolls and bottles of fizzy drinks in the dressing rooms being one of them. Speaks of Jayos influence on Dublin forward play bringing in basketball plays, set plays and the likes. Says that if Sunday week is a wet, dirty day that Tyrone could take Dublin but if the conditions are good Dublin will win handy. good summary. he also wants more than 6 subs allowed...cant agree there he wants rid of the black card and replace it with bring the ball forward 50 metres like in aussie rules....and give a peno for a cynical foul inside the 21. he was laughing at lads in the stand and people on forum shouting to kick it in long when the opposition have everyone back. the lack of support at kerry games upsets him i think.... not sure about it myself.... maybe he should have argued that games should scheduled at venues and times to make it a bit easier on kerry fans.... very engaging man. his sheer enthusiasm and leadership and infectious personality should be tapped into at some level by Kerry after he retires...

Yes, his 50m rule for cynical play would be much better than the black card IMO.

Good summation, on the lack of support, he was at pains to point out the benefit to the team that additional support would bring. Supporters tend to look at these things from their own perspective not the perspective of the team.

Just listened to Donaghy interview, very refreshing. I won't lie he always got me going in games against us, but you know what your getting. Talks a lot of common sense , id like to see him on tv analysing games , because to be fair he has good knowledge of the different era's and has a bit of wit about him. I think he will definetly retire , although Kerry could do worse than have him in the coaching background.

He's start a few rows anyway...not necessarily a bad thing.

I had sky sports volume turned down as I listened to Donaghy interview , it was great hearing from a player who has been in the Kerrycamp and been involved in recent big games , he was interesting and made some valid points . Good analysis on Dublin tactics. As the interview with Parkinson finished i turned back up my tv to see a dour (multimillionaire) Mouriniho blaming everyone for his woes and in that moment my appreciation for Donaghy and all current intercounty players rose and I realised how lucky we are to have these guys.

Another Mayo set up come and gone full circle without reaching the pinnacle of the game.

Is that an opening for McGuinness? Or the return of James Horan?

Some Mayo senior players will possibly follow him to the exit door also. Strange world after the levels they reached in the last two finals.

Think I seen McGuinness was the county board choice if Rochford left

Looks like they wouldn’t support his background team. Is Mcguinness not looking to build a career in soccer at the moment?

At least this news livens up what would have been an otherwise quiet week in GAA terms.

We've seen over the past few weeks that at the top table football is completely results based.

Did he serve 2 or 3 years? You would expect that some players might follow alright.

I had heard that the players didn't want him back and that a number of senior players were going to retire if he stayed on. They want McGuinness apparently. Heard it from someone who knows someone from Mayo so it must be true

Brady genuinely is the worst GAA pundit on any from of media, be it local, regional or national. His analysis and observations are ridiculous- I still remember last year when he mentioned the strength of Kerry's bench after the Kerry and Mayo semi final draw- he then went on to name check 2 players who didnt come on and 1 who played about 10 minutes. Nearly everything he says is complete and utter tosh

Oisin McConville on radio this morning saying that some Mayo players wanted Stephen Rochford banished. We know some of the players wanted Pat Holmes banished also. Twelve of the female Mayo footballers walked out this summer. What is it about the psyche of Mayo footballers of both genders that makes them feel there is no manager worthy of their extravagant talents. Perhaps an intensive course of counselling would help to deflate egos and demonstrate that maybe the fault lies within themselves.

Mayo's win over Kerry in 2017 greatly reduced the crass stuff directed at Mayo by Kerry fans.

Didn't 5 Mayo folk stood in a row get medals from the Pope in Croker on Sat night, so now they have their 5 in a row - we could only do 3 or 4! And to put the tin hat on it didn't he the sign the jersey the following morn in Knock. Ah I'm not so sure re blaming management, and let's see how the fare in finding someone as good as Rochford; then a team has to be built and where the pipeline mightn't be so strong. A panel like they just had don't come around too often for any county and if Dublin weren't so good then Mayo would have bagged Sam.
