I watched a recording of the Kerry v Cavan game and said to myself, what would I do if I were the Derry manager.
The first thing would be to play two on Clifford one in front and one behind. It was too easy for teammates to find David with foot passes out of defense.
The second thing is that I would lob a few high ones on top of the Kerry fullback line and keeper. They weren't at all comfortable under those against Cavan.
The Derry full back line were tenacious v Dublin so this looks very interesting.
This years Kerry minors reminded me of Kerry in the early 90s when every play was directed towards Maurice. I suspect that oSullivan and Friel and a few more will get to strut their stuff in the final as DC will never again get the freedom he got v Cavan. DC is really something else. He slotted a 45 with the left foot from the wrong side for a kicker using the left foot.

More worried about full back line and keeper than the two boys on Clifford. Sure he can take them out to the corner flag. Plenty of others to score. I am impressed with our midfield all year. They should give us the edge.

I was a little disappointed with the minors after watching them in Croke Park. However, I watched a recording of the match the other night and they played more impressively than I had thought . The first Cavan goal of course was a shambles and the goalie has to hold his hand up for that one. Our regular CHB , Eddie Horgan, was dropped after apparently playing poorly in the u17 semifinal. I would expect to see him back as his replacement was not convincing.
Donal is a terrific player and I was expeciting more from him. He is too good a player not to show improvement in the final. He will need to because very likely our star man will be closely chaperoned by a full back line which looked impregnable against Dublin. Another man I have been expecting more from over the past few games is wing forward Adam Donoghue. He was terrific against Cork and in my view was second only to David Clifford that night. He has been less prominent in all the games since.
There is a lad here from Listowel, Eddie Browne, who is on the extended panel I think. From what I have seen of him I would put him ahead of any of the two wing backs I saw the last day. Now , Na Crochaig is the expert on youth football here so I would be interested in his assessment of Eddie. Like our seniors, I think our backs could be the suspect area of this team. That seems to be a recurring theme with Kerry teams of late. Of course it maybe that Kevin Walsh of Galway is right when he said that defending in modern football is very difficult. I suspect he is on to something there.

Good luck lads, todays heroes and the Donaghys of the future, I hear Derry are honest-to-God hardy boys and they aren't in the final without good reason so it's very much a 50-50 contest.

What kind of allocation will Kerry get for the final on account of the minors participating?

Anthony Nolan (Darran's mate from the replay) is the ref for the minor final.
Peter Keane could do worse than look at the Mayo-Roscommon replay to see they type of frees he calls.

Could one apply to the county board for tickets here or are they purely retained for players, family & committees?

Could one apply to the county board for tickets here or are they purely retained for players, family & committees? No harm in asking but it will be a case of supply and demand with a hierarchy of those who get first call. Would be surprised if any become available for general sale - best bet is to try through your club.

These tickets will be for the hardcore club volunteers once the VIPs are sorted. Better off looking elsewhere for tickets.

Delighted to see the lads back for another final which can only augur well for the future. David Clifford is an outstanding talent but will get attention like never before so the other forwards will really have to be on their game. I believe they can although the Derry defence was tremendous against Dublin.
There are a number of areas that cause worry. There seemed to be a breakdown in communication between the goalie and full back line on a number of occasions during the game and we looked really suspect under the high ball. Derry will plan accordingly and I hope Kerry management can sort out the problems.
Kerry's midfield to my eye is still unconvincing. I felt they only broke even at most vs Cavan and on the evidence of the other semi the Derry midfielders are much better than the Cavan pairing. Like the point above I hope management can get the lads working really hard and cleverly here if we are to come out on top but a lack of physicality here may cost us.

The defence is the most worrying area and nowithstanding that the recent county minor semi final was decided and in its dying moments, the concession of 3 goals by East Kerry who had 4 of our starting defence on duty, does not inspire confidence - we may have to go for broke up front and hope to continue with our hot scoring streak. Much will depend of course on one David Clifford but he will probably face an examination like never before so his colleagues will all have to be on their game. This is probably the hardest game to win since the final of 2014 vs Donegal but we have proven all year that we have what it takes , so hopefully we will prevail.

In fairness, it is unlikely that Clifford will have as good a marker as he did in the final against Galway last year.

Individual players can be inspirational to a team but in the end it is a team game and the team needs to perform. I believe this bunch of lads can win but it will take a great effort - I agree it will be a bigger test than recent finals and expect Derry to be tough to crack.
These are young guys learning their trade - this final is the culmination of several years efforts and in particular a huge committment since November last year. Attitude and effort need to be right - the preparation and advice they are getting is second to none and now it is time for them to finish the job with one final push for 2017.

Who is ref for Minor final? I believe it is Anthony Nolan from Wicklow. He reffed the replay between Mayo & Roscommon.

I would expect Clifford to drag his minders out to the wings early in the game and have the other forwards run the ball straight down the middle. I can't see us trying high ball early in the game. Think it would be best getting ball to Clifford out in front of him early doors until we get a handle for Derry's backs. In time aerial delivery may make sense. We don't want to give Derry any psychological win by exposing Clifford against unfavourable odds. That said, to date it doesn't seem like odds mean anything to David, he just pillages in every climate.

I see Declan O Sullivan has been replaced by Johnny Crowley in the U20 management team - any significance to this change?

Not really I'd say. Declan went straight into the minors from playing and then the U21's. Might just need a break from the game. has been involved with intercounty teams every year since his minor days around 2001. Not to mention South Kerry before that. Maybe Declan might be getting involved locally.
Good to see Johnny Crowley involved.

Declan has Dromid, work & family commitments - would expect that Kerry role was probably a tad too much. Crowley has been involved with development squads plus East Kerry minors.

The flags only ever go up for the senior team - thereafter it is up to clubs and local communities to make an effort for their young warriors. Pity but understandable in one sense and a bit like the homecoming. Irrespective of the result this year I expect there will be no official homecoming event for the minors either - there was none for the u21 hurlers. Its senior success or nothing.
Regardless this is a big occassion for the minors and we wish them every success on Sunday - finish the jobs and make history.
