Just heard on the radio that Billy Morgan has got a 24 week ban for abusing the linesman in the final.
What do people think of this?
Is this the end of him as Cork Manager?

You can't do it, no matter how bad the match is going for you. But it would be an awful end to the man's career.....as I suspect it will be.

Ridculous lenght ban for an assault of a non-physical nature....

It's a second infraction of such a nature by Billy, within the probationary period after the first, hence he's been hit with a lenghtier ban than if he did it for the first time.

second time?? More like 4 or 5 but he got a suspension earlier and the second offence is 24 weeks. He is lucky. The new GAA rule will not tollerate abuse to any offical.. Had to be done

On a related note Larry tomkins is callin for his head in todays Evening Echo in Cork. But I suppose just like Paudy he's the kinda guy that will have to be dragged kicking and screaming from the job rather than walk away gracefully

Morgan hit with six month ban Cork manager Billy Morgan 05 October 2007
Cork football manager Billy Morgan has been banned for 24-weeks after he was deemed to have verbally abused a linesman during Cork’s ten-point All-Ireland final defeat to Kerry.
The ban rules Morgan out of his management duties until March 2008, meaning he would not be eligible to participate in match day preparations for the early rounds of next year’s national football league.
The length of the ban is because Morgan has already served a two match suspension this year for clashing with an official during a NFL game with Donegal.
Morgan was reported for an incident involving lineman Marty Duffy near the end of the first half of this year’s All-Ireland final with Kerry, which led the Central Competitions Control Committee to propose the 24-week ban.
The Central Hearing’s Committee met in Croke Park last night and decided to implement the suspension as proposed by the CCCC.

Larry is one to talk, look at the state he left Cork in! Anybody got that article? It's amusing the way Cahalane and Tompkins continually put down Cork for the last few years but when they got to the final they couldn't see them losing. After that they started attacking them again! Great judges of football they are

Morgan admits to being ’absolutely gutted’ Billy Morgan 06 October 2007
Cork football boss Billy Morgan says he’s been left speechless by being handed a 24 week ban by Croke Park’s Central Hearings Committee.
Morgan received the suspension for comments passed by him to linesman Marty Duffy during the All-Ireland final clash with Kerry.
Morgan also received an eight week ban earlier in the year. He is now likely to ask for a date to appear before the Central Appeals Committee.
"I’m so sick that I can’t even talk about it," Morgan admitted on hearing the CHC’s decision.
"I’m absolutely gutted. There’s no justification to it at all."

Funny how he wasn't speechless to officials. Nobody who gives up their free time for something they love should receive verbal abuse, referees and linesmen are not there for Billy Morgan to take his anger out on

'Verbal abuse' is part of the game. The ban is stupid and very unfair.
Wouldn't it be better , to send Billy from the pitch during the game and when this abuse took place?
I mean why didn't the linesman report him there and then to the ref. Deal it with on the spot. Then poor old Billy might think a bit more carefuly about how he communicates with the officials.

The next time time you do something you enjoy, be it sports, the cinema whatever, just imagine somebody coming up to you and verbally abusing you just because things aren't going well for them personally. Then you mightn't think this ban was "stupid and unfair".

billy and kavanagh would be better off to concentrate on playing football and park up the verbals.

I disagree with you there Falvey - you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you don't think there are verbals between players at every level of competition. Perhaps people's views depends on one's definition or understanding of what 'verbal abuse' is? For example is saying 'you old fool' or 'you old f::::::g donkey' verbal abuse? Or how about ' do that to me again you p:::ck and I'll send you into tomorrow'? Or what about simply uttering the words ' you b:ll:X' ? I notice that you haven't commented on my other thoughts on the matter. 6 months is harsh and stupid in my opinion and there are better ways of dealing wioth 'verbals'.

I agree with most of your points except the one saying that verbal abuse is part of the game. I could not disagree more. Of course there will be verbals of one sort or another between players but abusing officials is not acceptable, whether they deserve it or not
Sending the manager off there and then would be a good idea, but can referees currently do that. If they can, would they be able to send the offending manager to the dressing room as opposed to the bench
Might be better than long bans after the event. Billy Morgans ban may seem excessive but I'm sure the fact that he has previous for it didnt help his cause.

I never said there wasn't verbals between players, what I am saying is it's unacceptable, it's called Gaelic football not trash talking. He deserves at least 6 months for it because he's already done it this year(and last year not to mention all those other times....) and was still stupid enough to come back and do it again. Do you really think the officials in question would have reported him for no reason? I can't think of any better way to deal with it. What if Billy was ordered to the stand and refused to go? What do you do then, get stewards to drag him away? If Billy is as distraught as he says he is, then he'll have learned his lesson and won't abuse officials again. I won't hold my breath.

Falvey, would you have thought it acceptable for the few Kerry players who shouted at the umpires in Kilarney this year got a six month ban?

Falvey, would you have thought it acceptable for the few Kerry players who shouted at the umpires in Kilarney this year got a six month ban? News to me owenabue, surely you can't quibble with someone who has a history of abusing officials being suspended for doing it yet again?

Were you not at the match? The time when the umpire was thinking of putting the flag up for a point and then changed his mind? I'm not discussing Billy (as per my self imposed ban on the matter of Billy Morgan) I am just pointing out that other players and managers have done the same and not receive a 24 week ban. This was a different category infraction than the one earlier in the year. archives.tcm.ie/irishexaminer/2007/10/06/story44588.aspTo say because of history... well surely the punishment should fit the crime. Fairness I think what is called for not just "ah it is Billy, or Paul Galvin or Graham Geraghty etc etc shur they are always acting the maggot".

I was at the match owenabue and I honestly don't recall it, are you on about the 2006 Munster final? If you're not discussing Billy on a thread like this then..... Anyway if you do the crime, then do the time, if more players, managers etc. were given severe suspensions for verbal abuse and so on then it would stop fairly soon and the game would be an awful lot better for it. He can't complain but I do agree with you that there isn't enough consistency on matters like this and sadly in the GAA it appears that you're treated by who you are rather than what you did

No this year. It was nothing serious, but it could still be clasified as verbal abuse. I'm sure if we looked at any match we would find plenty of examples. (they did show the replay of it on the Sunday game) My arguement is for fairness, not taking the "oh poor Billy" approach. If you look at the difference between how refs and linesmen are treated in rugby, or indeed the fact the players are told why they are being punished, it just makes for a fairer system all round. The example someone said earlier of say asking the manager got to the stand makes more sense. We have heard plenty of examples of verbal or even physical abuse at club matches between refs/linesmen and selectors and managers maybe it's time to try a different approach.

Hard to see that working now though as there's little respect in the game and I feel the only way to get it back would be to get tough with offenders. Rugby is a lot more stop start than football, I mean you couldn't have the ref explaining all his decisions, it would go on forever!

I stand by my earlier comments. Verbal abuse is part of the game whether you like it or not.
The question is, how do you decide what verbal abuse is? It's quite a subjective decision methinks.
Let nobody tell me that Billy's condemned words or words of similiar intent are not heard at matches the length and breadth of the country.
However I haven't heard of too many 8 week or 24 week bans been handed out for this?

Lads it was his second offence..... Linesmen dont normally say much or report much that is said in the heat of the moment so it had to be pretty bad.The rules for abuse of officals are harsh no question but they are the rules approved at congress, voted on by all counties.
