The weather doesn't look great for Sunday. However the contest between JOD and Killian Young in what effectively could decide who captains Kerry next year will be worth the entry fee alone. Killian as a young player in the last decade has been superb on the Gooch at corner back on county final day. Looking forward to that particular battle. We have a great system in Kerry when a player from a small division 5 club and from a large senior town club in Kerry can play against each other for the right to captain the Kerry senior football team. Sunday is what it is all about, long may that continue. Yes totally agree with this Division 5 players deserve every chance to play at the big stage the beauty of our Championship that should never be changed both players deserve to be Captain of our County! South Kerry team is back boned by lower League teams such as Valentia, Renard, Sneem/Derrynane and Dromid from looking at the programme last week. Heard that South Kerry have put in big effort this year in training in Barraduff out by Glenflesk. It will be a great game to watch as me for a neutral would not like to be supporting either team. May the best team win.

Two separate championships might be a solutions? Championship 1: The senior clubs play a championship to produce one winner which represents Kerry in Munster - removes the need for the senior clubs to play in two championships and frees up weekends for county league and district competitions. Championship 2: The district teams play a separate championship to produce one winner. This might even improve the quality of the district teams if proper time was free upped for the intermediate and junior championships. Championship 1 winner versus Championship 2 winner in the Grand County Final to win the county championship outright. That is a very good proposal. The team that wins the Club side would be Senior Club Champions and be assured of progress to Munster. There are I believe 9 districts. They could play in Championship 2 on a straight knock-out basis. That would, as you say, allow for the intermediate and junior championships to progress. In Championship 1, you could perhaps have some round-robin groups or a back-door of some description.

I know it gives edge to the County Final to have the captaincy at stake, but the system has caused loads of problems.

That's the central theme, losers round in the senior club championship to run concurrently with the junior and intermediate progression rounds with the senior club, intermediate and junior champions all progressing to the Munster championships. No back door for the district teams but back to the clubs as it were. Everyone gets a chance to compete to play in the grand county final for the outright county championship. It would save a shed load of time and free up numerous weekends for the local district championships.

I hear and appreciated what your saying but it has also worked well 37 times also. I'd be very disappointed to see it changed. What happens on Sunday when the first ball comes into the Kitchen between JOD and KY may have a bearing on who potentially lifts Sam in 2016. That is footballing theatre. That sentence alone contains 16-KY-Sam.

Great to see a resurgence in Valentia all the same with div 4 in their sights. It is not that long ago they were struggling to field a team.

It should be an exciting game and yes the battle between Killian & James will be interesting, could go anyway but I think the club side will shade it. It will be a major workload on Peter Keane trying to juggle the Kerry minors and Legion should Legion progress into munster and possibly further.

The current system of nominating the Kerry captain militates against players like Aiden and Paul Murphy and Brendan Kealy and Peter Crowley and a few others from hard working progressive clubs from smaller towns and villages. Unless their clubs drop to intermediate they are unlikely to captain their county. They are mot strong enough to win the county title on their own.
The system is skewed in favour of clubs like Crokes and Divisional sides like SK who draw from 100 players. Why should Bryan Sheehan have a much better chance of captaining Kerry twice that Aiden captaining Kerry once? There is a pretty good argument for saying that Caherciveen should be a senior club on their own anyway like Rathmore are.
So the current system is flawed and unfair in my opinion.
In my view, it should not matter whether you are from a tiny boreen or a big town, if you have served the time with Kerry, you should get a shot at the captaincy. For this reason, I would like to see the captaincy rotated yearly with the recipient each year being someone (1) who has not previously captained Kerry and (2) is the longest serving player. That could simply be most championship appearances at the end of the previous year.
And to those who think that the county final would lose its appeal somewhat...go to a Kerry hurling final and see how much its fought for even though the chances of the Kerry hurling captain collecting Liam McCarthy is shall we say, remote!

A captain is a leader someone to look to for guidance someone to kick you up the ass if need be, the current process for electing the Kerry captain does not guarantee that. Yes it seems to have worked 37 times but I bet if you could ask Micko, Ogie, Paudie, Mickey ned, Jack, Pat Shea & Eamon if the captains they had would have been the ones they really wanted I'm sure the answer for most would be no.

That post could have been written for JOD up until a few weeks ago. Nice to see him leading his club from the front and making it happen.

Yes he ticks all the boxes and I'm sure James, Killan or Brian would be good leaders, I suppose the question is would they be the best in the squad to led the team??

Shur who stands out head and shoulders above every other player on the current team in terms of being a leader? Name a few of them that would be stand out better candidates ahead of KY, BS or JOD.

Aidan O'Mahony, Donnchadh Walsh, Marc O'Shea & Gooch would be up there, not totally disagreeing with KY, BS or JOD, my point is that the player nominated as capt may not be the best suited for the job.

Quantify it, leadership among individual players cut from the same cloth. It is splitting hairs, not the atom.

Ok if Kenmare won the county championship Stephen O'Brien would be capt, not a leader yet and he would be well down the pecking order for most people. Again not really putting up an argument because after all it's worked 37 times already.

It inspired Darran O'Sullivan six years ago. The old adage, be careful what we wish for. It has worked well 37 times.
Brian Cody doesn't have a problem with it.

I see the weather forecast is horrendous for Sunday’s county final's, who will this favour in both Junior and senior games?

If you are the longest serving Kerry player that hasn't already captained Kerry, I would be happy enough that you would tick the "leadership" box. Marc, Aiden, Killian would all get their shot at it under my proposal. So would have Tomas OSe and Tom Sullivan. Leaders all in my view.
Why should players from ambitious clubs like Rathmore who are doing their best to stay senior lose out?

If Rathmore had closed out the game v Legion in the semi,Aiden O Mahoney would have one hand on the captain's armband. I think it's a good system and an extra reward for the winner of the bishop moynihan,Every player on the Kerry panel has a realistic chance of being captain,That's why i think the county players drive on the divisional sides Agree 100%. Its not a lucky bag award.

There was an overreaction to Crokes dominance and now we have the farcical situation where already jaded players have to fight tooth and nail to keep their club's in the Senior Championship. Most clubs prepare for championship in a far better manner than their divisional counterparts. It stands to reason that a player will be more committed to his club than a divisional side. Since the All Ireland's were introduced at Junior and Intermediate level players have become more committed to preparing with their clubs for these championships. The club's are being treated unfairly because in most cases their level of preparation is far higher than that of a divisional team. A few years ago Dingle and Legion would have been well down the pecking order in the Senior Championship rankings but due to hard work and an infusion of young talent are now dining at the top table. Dingle are Senior Club Champions and double Minor Championship winners and Legion are only 60 minutes away from winning a Senior County Championship. Austin Stacks who represented the county in an All Ireland semi-final earlier this year are now in the ludicrous position of fighting to retain their Senior status in the month of November. Crossmaglen have won 19 out of 20 Armagh championships and Portlaoise have just won in 9 in a row in Laois which begs the question was our Senior Championship really that bad? There'll be serious unrest if Stacks or Rahillys were relegated and if one from Ardfert or B/Foilmore win at the weekend. Miltown/Castlemaine, Laune Rangers, Ardfert and B/Foilmore not winning at the weekend are not closed deals. There is bound to be a wild card fluttering around in there some where in dog eat dog scenarios! First semi-shock of the day. M/C 2.09 Stacks 2.06. Miltown/Castlemaine safe.

Hows is this canine feast completed now, how do they decide three from four? 4 losers today get drawn in to a 2nd round where the 2 losers are then relegated. 2 winners in that round playoff and loser of that game also relegated. If Laune Rangers go down then would play with Mid Kerry next year.
