a bit of foreboding is no harm whatsoever.............
if we had it in 1982 we would have won 5 in a row.
Con Houlihan admitted many years later that in his column in the Evening Press he used to use a bit of the "doom and gloom" stuff if he felt that Kerry were a bit complacent. I am not comparing myself to the great Con ......... but............ it does no harm at all in the run up to a final.

Ah, doom and gloom and forboding!!!! and sure we are only going up to get the XMAS shopping done anyway.
tis all part of the tradition of All Ireland final weekend.
One thing though, 2002 and 2005, we played some of the finest football ever seen on the way to the all Ireland final. Feet have to be definitly on the ground this time round as we have stumbled and struggled our way forward. Hopefully it will stand to us

if the players go up feeling like this, all doom and gloom, we may all aswell all stay at home. I dont think its doom and gloom!! I would call it cautious optimism! If you let us all have internet access at 4 am saturday night we d all be saying how we are going to hammer the sh ite out of Cork

Lads.....two things to note:
1) If I say Kerry will win, they'll lose. 2) If I say the opposition will win, Kerry do!!
I believe in piseogs.
But I also believe Cork's midfield has been better than Kerry's and here is where we could lose the All Ireland.
As to being out at 4am on Sunday morning, I usually try to be in bed early enough before an All Ireland Kerry are playing in, a quick scan of what Colm O'Rourke says and then some fitful sleeping.
Now as to when Kerry aren't playing.....carnage.

Stacks can you stop the talk about loosing the All -Ireland. It's bad enough to be away from home, homesick, anxious, nervous, sleep deprived.............it's enough to make a person crazy!! As the lads wrote before a few posts back Stacks Mid-field is not the b - all and end all of the field. Feck them anyhow, I say we'll take them well. Our six forwards are much better Stacks....you know that . This is no time to be second guessing our team. Have another drink for all us lost emigrants in Rock Street won't you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the doom and gloom is a good thing, never hurt anyone, never hurt Kerry before as far as I can see!
I've seen a lot of ifs in this thread, if the midfield lose, if Dara doesn't show, if, if, if! The only if I can say without any doubt, is absolutely true, is that IF Kerry play to anywhere near their full potential, if they play with the heart and grit and determination we know is within every Kerry man, if these things fall into place the minute that first ball is thrown in on Sunday afternoon, then there will be no ifs or buts about the destination of Sam for 2007, we'll all know for definite he's coming to his rightful home!

Well said Die Hard Kerry Fan!!!!!!
I think if Kerry play to their potential - which is far better than we saw against Monaghan and even Dublin then they will take Cork. It will not be as easy as the last few years against Cork in Croke Park - but the Kingdom certainly have the better team - provided they are focused and hungry!

I dont post here much but the nerves are building nicely and will be full on come Sunday afternoon, am confident and nervous in equal measures but its a great place to be, involved in another All Ireland and for those that have been lucky enough over the years to experience it, they will know what I mean.
Kerry v Cork has always been a special day in the GAA calander and being an All Ireland final will make it even more so, Cork are trying to give out the attitude that its only another game, but Mayo tried that approach last year, I feel teams have to be up for the game to soak up the atmosphere of the day without letting it overshadow the end result. Kerry have the upper hand here in experience of the big day, and it will be a testamount to Morgan and his team if they can remain focussed.
The Palace bar on Saturday and O'Shea's The Merchant or O'Sheas Hotel will get the blood going nicely on Saturday night for those of us on the other side of the fence while a few snappy pre match pints in the Findlater will hopefully set us up for a full on assault for Sam come Sunday. Old rituals and pisogs, must dig out those old green and gold socks.
For Kerry Cork games it brings back memories of great names who have played for both teams, Going back in the mists of time, the likes of Kerry's John Joe Sheehy, Con Brosnan, Miko Doyle, Paddy Kennedy, Joe Keohane, Paddy Bawn Brosnan and many more legends loved to play against Cork. In the 70's and 80's the likes of the late great Tim Kennelly, Jimmy Deenihan, Jack O'Shea, John Egan, The Bomber Liston, Pat Spillane and Paidi O'Se revelled against the rebels who had some greats themselves in the likes of Declan Barron, Jimmy Barry Murphy, Jimmy Kerrrigan, Dinny Allen and Billy Morgan, tough men all and great games and memories, Micko Dwyer was right when he said Cork were the 2nd best team in the country back then.
In the late 80's and early 90's the clashes were going mostly in favour of the rebels as an aging Kingdom had no match for their hunger and then the rebels recruited Larry and Shay and also had the likes of Niall Cahalane, Tony Davis, Colman Corrigan, Stephen O'Brien, Barry Coffey and Paul McGrath to push them on. Kerry were to come again in 1996 when a meitheil of young lads straight from the U21's joined the likes of hardy North Kerry men Eamon Breen and Liam Flaherty, and Seamus Moyniihan and the classy Maurice Fitzgerald to finally break Cork's hold on Munster and lead Kerry from the wilderness to the banquet. The Likes of Dara O'Cinneide, The Hassetts brothers, Darragh O'Se, Mike Frank Russell were to become household name in Kerry and beyond over the the next yew years.
Another U21 in 98 gave us the likes of Diarmuid Murphy, Tom O'Sullivan, Tom O'Se and a few more and this band of brothers have been the backbone of our recent success.
Of course in 2002 a little red haired lad from Killarney came to prominence, "too light shure he will never make it" were the immediate remarks, another O'Se was let loose from that footballing stable west in Ard án Bothar and maybe he will be the best of the whole lot. We turned a hurler from Lixnaw into the fiery footballer that is Paul Galvin, Little Dromid Pearses down in South Kerry provided Declan O'Sullivan and basketball gave us a Star and a Quirke. But still we march on and new faces appear which has been great to see, Reidy from Scartaglin will be the first to represent his village as will young Young from Renard. Currow has produced many legends of Irish sport and big men too, Mick Doyle, Moss Keane and Mick Galwey are big boots to fill for Seamus Scanlon while Bryan Sheehan follows in the footsteps of Jerome O'Shea, Jack O Shea and Maurice Fitzgerald, legends of the GAA, legends of Kerry and all from St Mary's. A proud Kerry tradition lads to uphold and I am sure no one will be found wanting for the cause on Sunday.
But Cork too deserve mention, 1999 is the last time Cork have been to the top table and they have had some miserable times since then but are back this year and with an U21 title already tucked away will be quitely confident, giants like Canty, Spillane, Murphy, Kavanagh, O'Neill and Cussen will win plenty of ball and put the fight to the Kingdom, Will they score enough, will we?
Its there to be won, and what will win it is some parts of hunger, pride, skill, scores, defending, the referee, the crowd, experience , the hop of the ball, the break of the ball, a controversial decision, but one thing we can be sure of and expect from both sides is that they will fight for their jersey. We need to get into the game early on Sunday and lay down a marker, the rebels are staying very quite all week, which worries me.
A final thought for us all for the weekend on what makes us proud of our Kerry footballers comes from the pen of the late Bryan McMahon.
Dúchas
You say tradition counts for naught when two teams take the field, I fear you are mistaken, lad, but the years will make you yield, And when your hair's as grey as mine, and time has made you old, Then you'll invoke the truth I spoke of the Kingdom's green and gold.
You cannot box or bottle it, nor grasp it in your hand, But pride of race and love of place inspire a love of land Time honoured is our birthright, we'll never break the mould, It's deep within the soul of us, who wear the green and gold.
Grey lakes and mountains soaring high, Mount Brandon's holy hill, The little church at Gallerus, our language living still, The Skellig Rock, stout football stock, they can't be bought or sold, For our county's fame, we play the game in the Kingdom's green and gold.
And when the battle's fiercest and the fortunes ebb and flow, We're still alive, we can survive, we never will let go, For the spirit of our fathers and of stories yet untold, Will lead us on to victory, in the Kingdom's green and gold.
We savour Kerry victories, we salute a gallant foe And when we lose, there's no excuse, we pick up our bags and go, So raise your glass each lad and lass to our warriors brave and bold, Who again aspire to the Sam Maguire in the Kingdom's green and gold.
lets the games commence.

discipline could be a key factor in this game.players will be feeling the pressure more so and i feel if we can keep the scoreboard ticking over without to many wides, we should have the experience to come through what promises to be a great occasion. bringing sam home before the burning bonfires on monday, what a thought!

Mighty sthuff there Mike. Great post. I cant see Cork coming within 10 points of us Sunday. Ill go further and suggest that this is the start of something big. This team is well capable of doing the five in a row that we narrowly missed out on in 1982. Wouldn't it be ironic if this team showed them Offaly Biffos of '82 how it should be done. Feck it anyway lads, I'll have to go to the jax or somewhere out of the way Sunday when them lads of '82 come out on Croker. I might even throw a rotten orange at Darby if I'm near enough. I'll never get over 1982 and I hate being reminded of it.

I am troubled quiet honestly. A 40% return from our middle third against this Cork team will place tremendous pressure on our defence.I think if we go down to 40% we will loose. We need a massive improvement from the Semi in this quarter. I just hope the improvement is there but I just cannot see it at the moment. Dont get me wrong I know Darra will not be found wanting I just hope that he is fully fit and ready to go. Eoin too will need to be at his best though I am more confident in this department. I will be relieved with a point again. I expect big performances from the two Toms Aidan Mark Declan and Colm. Will that suffice ? Can we vary the Kickouts when necessiary ? Will Paul cope with the grief? Will Coldrick go rounding up the usual suspects if the going gets tough. How will Star do Will Canty follow him ? Will he roam ? I dunno I felt like this in 2002 and in 2005. The stakes have never been higher. I AM JUST HOPING NO MORE Ciarrai Abu. Time will tell there some where

Because we have just about broken even with lesser midfields this year. Cork have beaten us before in midfield (one of the few teams to do so, even Tyrone didn't break even with us in 2005) and have incredible potential to do so again on Sunday. And when did they last beat us in midfield stacks? It's a long time ago, Darragh was the outstanding midfielder in July

Great post there KerryMike.Post of the year for me so far here on the forum, well done.
We will need everyone playing from the heart an soul on sunday that makes up the kerry footballing family, players, panel members, management, former players, supporters at home, supporters in the stands, supporters around dublin on sunday ticket less to create the atmosphere, kerry people at home tending to the sick and unwell.Everyone has a part to play. The atmosphere around dublin for the dublin game was one of best i've experienced in a long time on the streets, the place was thronged with the green and gold jerseys i'm sure sunday will be no different v the rebels.Kerry fans in the ground will play a big part by getting behind the team on sunday by lifting the rafters when the furnace doors open and the great white hot heat that is the raging croker inferno, as the game is in the melting pot, stares down the players throats, thats the time for all to play and roar from the heart and soul of kerry football.
kerry dublin and kerry cork games are just as big in my mind, both are always hard to win, cork has always being a hard nut for kerry to crack and sunday will be no different.
kerry and Cork in croker on all-ireland final day is a big as it gets, take notting for granted, sunday is a massive occassion, but one kerry teams have thrived on for a long time going back over the years.
if the attitudes are right everywhere and from everyone concerned the fans in croker on sunday can drive on this kerry team, theres nothing like the roar of the crowd when its most needed to lift a team and drive them through a rocky patch in a game.Sunday is the day to create a special athmosphere down town dublin and in the stands for a very special occassion.
I'm really starting to look forward to sunday now, sunday is a game to be enjoyed and exel in,not a war to be won.A fired up cork team is always a dangerous beast that needs tameing.

Great post KeryMike, 5 posts in over 4 years, u must save them up....
Thurs morning and time to start getting excited, i'm getting nervous here in work already and can't wait for the game, what must it be like for the players if we are like this.
I think too much is being made of the midfield battle, most possesion from kickouts these days is from breaking ball, so it's the half backs and half forwards that will key to gaining possesion. Of course the most important factor is how we use the ball when we have it, i was very surprised and delighted with the tactics used against Dublin, almost abandoned high ball completely. I think they will and should bring Star out now and again and leave space for the Gooch, he's our key man, if he gets enough of the ball we will win. He was starved of the ball against Monaghan and we struggled big time. I'm sure Morgan will try to have some tactics to stop this as he knows this also, i guess the easiest thing is to stop the supply, easier said than done, so what does he do, watch this space.
I think the lads heads are right for this game and the hunger is there, which is the biggest thing. You have to be right mentally, we have 4 starting debutants, Dara going for medal 5, all going for 2 in a row and i think they all know they have to win this one to be regarded as a great team, if they lose they will know they will be called underachievers.... and finally it's Cork.
I'm confident the lads have the right focus, mentality and hunger and after that their superior footballing skills will bring Sam back home for the 35th time.

Nice post Mike. Think you forgot the last two verses though...
Down in Ballydesmond where the river gently flows There's Cork lads who have kept the faith when faced with Kerry foes They could have had some soft ones but they held firm, wouldn't sway Now O'Connor's going to march in red on All Ireland Final day
We remember Kerry victories, the jeering as we go The s*ing and the laughing at the things the ref let go But watch your backs each lad and lass for our warriors brave and bold Will raise green flags while ye raise glass, 'tis time to bring Sam home

Donaghy likely to be fit for decider despite injury scare
By Tony Leen KERRY’S All-Ireland final preparations received a massive jolt after footballer of the year Kieran Donaghy picked up a foot injury in training.
However, after x-rays found no serious damage, sources within the Kingdom camp insist the Austin Stacks man will be fully fit to line out against Cork in Sunday’s final at Croke Park.
Hundreds of Kerry fans gasped when Donaghy stumbled and fell during a training session on Tuesday night. He had the injury investigated at Kerry General Hospital after training, and there was widespread concern when he left the hospital on crutches.
However Donaghy had the foot X-rayed in Tralee yesterday which confirmed nothing more than bruising. He may miss tonight’s final training session as a precaution.
Meanwhile Skibbereen’s Conor McCarthy could be included at right half forward when Cork name their starting 15 for the final tonight after training.
McCarthy has impressed on each occasion he was introduced as substitute this season, scoring in both the All-Ireland quarter-final against Sligo and the semi-final against Meath. He has also been going extremely well in training, and with James Masters likely to win a recall at corner forward, U-21 star Daniel Goulding could be the one to lose out for the game with champions, Kerry.
John Miskella of Ballincollig will be asked to fill the vacancy at left half back, with Anthony Lynch given little chance of any meaningful involvement after breaking a bone in his hand during a trial game
