declan hasnt played well this summer, You weren't watching the last three games - Declan improved steadily in each one and was as good as most of our forwards by the Cork game. Won scores, ball and frees. Putting him on may/may not be the right call, but at least show a bit of accuracy. i was at each of the last five kerry championship games. and if declan was playing as well as you suggest then why would this debate be ongoing between kerry fans in the first place? he was dropped because he wasnt playing well.

Looks lads, let him have his chance. He's been flying in training. Its not jacks fault they happen to be from the same club. I can see the merits for him starting. I for one think it will actually benifit the gooch on sunday. Hes coming back to form and now a burden has been taken from him so I believe he will have a great game on sunday.Declan was there last year so he wont be fazed by it. Anyway I think declan is going to play his normal deep game and drag nallen all over the place but also proved a bit of cover to the halfbacks when seamus moves back to his sweeping role

Seamus this is some sh1te talk two and a half before an an all-ireland final. And yet with five days to go it could seriously unsettle the camp. Good spot Seamus, there was a few complaints about the relavence of the thread but none now. It could have been sorted out long before now and just pick one captain for the team for the year. Its very unfair on the crokes lads aswell and wont do much for morale. I doubt the switch had anything to do with getting his own club man on captain, (I could be wrong). Its a joke of a system anyway. I know its tradition but it causes a lot of trouble at times. I think the best player should be captain and lead the team on and off it and let the manager decide. If he picks a guy who only comes on as a sub and his clubman then let him. A joint presentation with Gooch could still fix this problem if it has caused hassle.

Good point there, the Gooch is due a big game and without the added pressure this may well be the game of his life. Please God it will be

i'd say the fairest option would be to have a joint presentation should we win on sunday, {sure why not throw bryan sheehan into the mix too?! seeing as there could be a few faces up on the podium,he is vice captain after all fair enough he didn't actually captain the side}

He played well when he came on against Armagh, Cork and is in top form in training is my understanding of the situation. If you think he played badly against Armagh and Cork then so be it.

whatever about the merits of his selection it really worries me when people start talking about declan dropping back to play his usual deep game. remember what happened when he did that 12 months ago??? the Tyrone centre back left him off fooling around the field & he stood in front of the kerry full forward line cutting off space for Gooch & making it difficult to to pick out the inside forwards. i would prefer too Declan Sull playing an orthodox centre forward role

He seemed to spend more time in the forwards when he came on in the last 3 games. the message must be getting through.

He did in fairness. Harsh on Brosnan and Crokes in a way though. But the county comes first and I hope for Jack's sake he made the right call. I really hope Declan proves the doubters wrong and if they do win both he and Gooch lift the trophy together.

What ever it is, it is at this stage. I am sure that if the players had a problem with it they would have voiced their opinion and Jack and the selectors would have to listen.

Seems like the right move - gives the man the chance to prove all the doubters wrong. Sure it's going to be a draw anyway, so yis can choose another captain for the replay

Whilst I would have preferred Brosnan to start for his goal threat, the argument regarding the captaincy is a red herring.
Declan is captain and has been for the last two years.
It was always likely that the Gooch's captaincy would be short lived, I am sure he was aware of this.
The issue is whether Declan's style suits the team not the captaincy.

Well it all ended well didnt it. Declan had a stormer, Brosnan made an immediate impact when introduced, Cooper had a fine match and got to lift the cup with Declan.
Alls well that ends well!!!

Moved post:AIB County Senior Football Championship 2006! Post by dec on Today at 9:44Any chance the senior county captaincy will be be picked by the management next year instead of the County Champions....? Do people think this should change or is it a case of...Why change it? With all respect to the captains who have been nominated before I think its time to change the system so that the captain will be chosen by the management of the Kerry Senior football team... moved post
